A Brief History of Chickens: Where Do They Come From?
Chickens aren't the most glamorous birds, but they have quite an interesting story, and that story begins in the dinosaur age. Curious? Here’s a primer on chicken evolution and domestication.
The chicken’s origins lie in a group of dinosaurs called the theropods, which evolved into two categories some 230 million years ago. Eventually, one lineage resulted in the genetic line that produced the Tyrannosaurus rex.
In 2003, paleontologist Jack Horner discovered a 68-million-year-old T. rex fossil in Montana. Inside its thigh bone, scientists found a blood vessel they were able to analyze. Their phylogenetic analysis revealed that genetically speaking, the domestic chicken is the closest living relative of T. rex.
The modern chicken is descended from several of four known species of wild jungle fowl that inhabited parts of Southeast Asia about 50 million years ago. Scientists believe the red jungle fowl, Gallus gallus, is the most likely progenitor of the modern chicken, although research suggests that the domestic chicken’s yellow skin is a trait inherited from the gray jungle fowl.
So, it’s more than likely that today’s chicken has multiple ancestors.
Chickens became domesticated between 8,000 and 10,000 years ago. There’s also genetic evidence to suggest that there were simultaneous but independent domestication events in different parts of Asia and India. It’s difficult to pinpoint domesticated chickens' exact origins because the long history of interbreeding between wild and domesticated birds has resulted in inconclusive DNA evidence.
Once egg-laying chickens were domesticated, they were used for food, fighting, and religious purposes. Various cultures spread them around the world over the course of thousands of years via migration, trade, and territorial conquests.
The Polynesians brought chickens to the Pacific coast of South America around 1200 A.D. Over a period of several hundred years, and mostly due to the popularity of cockfighting, inhabitants of the New World became well versed in chicken care and breeding. Spanish explorers brought chickens to North America, and chickens soon became widely dispersed across the continent.
The chicken is one of the most dominant symbols in our history dominating aspects of our culture and culinary habits. For goodness sake, chickens joined the Romans in battle to help predict the outcomes of war!

10 Mean Cat Breeds Who'd Rather Be Left Alone
These cats are not your average lap cat. While cute and cuddly, these cats are also, well, how should we put it: feisty. Here are the 10 meanest cat breeds.
As cat lovers know, every cat has their own unique personality. While these domestic cat breeds might seem like they like to cuddle, they are also known as the meanest cat breeds. That’s right, these felines really embrace their wild cats’ side -- these are definitely not your average lap cats!
Stay on your house cat’s good side by knowing these top 10 most aggressive cat breeds -- you might even get a snuggle in!
Although Siamese cats are one of the most popular (and cutest!) cat breeds, it’s general consensus that they are also the meanest -- that’s why they landed as No. 1 on this list. Siamese are very territorial and get jealous quite easily and tend to be a “one-person cat."
The Sphynx cat is one very demanding feline. These hairless cats like being the center of attention and can be quite needy -- and will act out aggressively to get what they want.
Bombay cats are well-known to be attention-seeking. Even though they love being around people, they will also lash out and get mean when they’re scared.
With the Asian Leopard cat in their bloodlines, Bengal cats might be more “wild” than others. These cats, despite being a great pet, also have a mean streak -- they’re quite demanding and might show aggressiveness at times.
A Taylor Swift favorite, the Scottish Fold is a pretty famous (and so adorable!) cat breed. These kitties prefer the company of just their primary caregivers (or caregiVER!) and will not really give anyone else the time of day.
Although this feline is known for its love for playtime, the Pixie-Bob can be wary of strangers. These cats will use a bunch of different sounds (other than meows of course!) to communicate with you -- which might include some mean growls too.
Egyptian Maus bond fiercely with their humans, and this kitty gets shy around strangers and has a protective nature.
Having an independent streak, American Wirehair cats just wants to be left alone sometimes -- and won’t be shy about being mean and defending themselves when bothered or provoked.
The Korat is a cat that likes quiet environments, so they might get annoyed by loud noises and rowdy kids. When scared or aggravated, these cats will act meanly in self-defense.
While the Singapura cat can be a lot of fun, they can also be wary of strangers -- and will be aggressive and mean if they feel threatened. They’re also easily startled, so be sure to socialize them properly at an early age -- if not, they might hide often!

Texas Longhorn cattle sales to cattlemen and ranchers post-Civil War brought the state of Texas out of an economic depression. The ancestral Spanish cattle were first brought to North America by Christopher Columbus in 1493 to the Caribbean island of Hispaniola.

Affectionate Cat Breeds Who Just Want Your Love
Most cats love cuddling just as much as dogs, but these cat breeds are especially affectionate.
It's a common misconception that cats don't necessarily need humans to have a happy life. While it is undeniable that cats are more independent than dogs, some cat breeds are known to be more cuddly than others and rely on humans for those said cuddles.
Cheryl Hogan of The International Cat Association (TICA) offered her two cents on cat breeds she knows to have more a connection to their human counterparts. She told Pet MD that the following nine cat breeds are more likely "to go out of their way to snuggle right into your heart."
While all cats have unique and special personalities, these affectionate cat breeds seem more interested to sit on laps than being alone.

Mini Cows Exist, And Here's The Adorable Proof
Yes, miniature cows are real, and yes, they really are this adorable.
If you don't have enough room on your land for a herd of big cows, consider getting minis for smaller acreage. They still produce milk like standard size cows but don't need as much space. These small-breed bull cows generally stand at 36 to 42 inches at the hip, which means they are about half the size of a full-size cow.
Some miniature cattle breeds include:
Mini Belted Galloway cows are hardy in the winter with their double shaggy coats they shed in the summer. Belties were originally bred in Scotland
Dexters are mini cows by nature and were bred in Ireland and are smaller by nature due to the lack of resources in mountains where they originated. They were dubbed "The Poor Man's Cow" because they don't take much to raise, so they're ideal for homesteading.
Jersey cows come form Jersey Island in Britain. Islands don't have that much room for large, grazing herds so miniature Jersey cows were bred to be smaller than normal. Mini Jerseys don't get bigger than 42 inches at the hip. They'll make wonderful additions to your small farm!
Miniature Herefords are a reasonable size and fluffy to boot! These great pets help mow your grass, provide good fertilizer, and you can enter them into cow shows at fairs.
Miniature zebus are noticeable by the hump behind their head and are thought to be the oldest cattle breed in the world, originating in India. These small cattle make good companions on smaller farms. Their milk is also very high in butterfat content. Brahman cattle are a breed branching from the Zebu.
Holsteins are best known for their milk production, producing two to three gallons a day! They make for a great little family milk cow!
Scottish Highland cows are known best for their luscious locks, making them well adapted to cold weather.
It is up to you to research quality miniature cattle breeders and farms, but the good news is that there are plenty of them here in the United States for you to choose from. Reference the International Miniature Cattle registry for more info on where to find these miniature bovines. By the time you realize, and once you win the lottery, you'll have the sweetest little mini farm!

Is Getting Pooped On By Birds Good Luck?
If a bird poops on you or anything you own, it's said to be a sign of good luck!
The Russian superstition is based on the rare odds of actually being pooped on by a bird.
A rabbit's foot or horseshoe might be the more traditional objects relating to symbols of good luck, but we can't forget about bird poop.
With as many birds as there are in the sky, it's supposedly more rare to be pooped on by one than it is to win the lottery. This actually prompts many people to play the lotto when they do get pooped on by a winged wayfarer. Can you imagine having a winning ticket for the Powerball after getting pooped on by a bird? (Now that's some good fortune!)
However, we know that parking a car under a tree is a recipe for disaster, so you're tempting fate if you play that game. Being struck by lightning is even rarer and not seen as quite so fortunate, so it might be time to dispel the myth surrounding bird poop's sign of luck.
Now, you're probably hoping next time you see a flock of seagulls that one will just feel a few bubble guts and release some bird droppings on you. Hey, it might feel like a bad day at first, but it could be your lucky day. If it happens, go and buy a lottery ticket. Although, I hope you have a good stain remover because if you had any prior bad luck, it might leave you with a gross stain.
Don't toss out your favorite t-shirt if you're lucky enough to get pooped on. We've got you with the best stain removers. Your shirt will look fresh in no time after a drop of these babies, and a good wash.
Good omen aside, sometimes birds poop on your stuff. Hopefully, this first time is the only time. Keep some stain remover (and probably Febreeze) nearby. Animal feces may be a symbol of good luck, but it's still a messy situation!

However, owning an otter as a pet is not as easy as it might seem.

5 Tips for Keeping Peacocks as Pets
Need some color in your life? Consider a pet peacock; that is, if you're up for the challenge.
Peacocks are rightfully called peafowl. (Peacock is the name for the male of the species.) Because green peafowl are endangered, it is not recommended to keep them as pets. The blue peafowl generally makes the best pet, as it is more adaptable and less aggressive than other types. There are a few things you should know about general care before bringing your peafowl home, though
1. Have enough land.
Peafowl require at least 80 square feet per bird. This space is important in order to prevent disease, as well as fighting among the birds. If you keep a male peacock, the pen should be large enough for him to display his long tail feathers without injury.
Peafowl have a loud, shrill cry that can aggravate neighbors, especially during mating season, so peafowl are obviously best kept in rural areas.
2. Keep them warm.
Wooden roosts are the best way to shield them from the cold. If you are raising peacock chicks from peafowl eggs, be sure to keep them in a heated area for four to six weeks after the baby peachicks start to hatch. You should keep the temperature over 95º F and lower it by about 5º F every week during the incubation period.
3. Keep them safe.
Predators like coyotes are the main concern for peafowl owners, especially those that are free-range. Tree houses are the best way to protect them from predators, and peafowl love to roost up high.
A large pen surrounded with chicken wire, with a wooden shelter or hen house with a nesting area, complete with a warming light, is a good example for a pet peacock habitat.
4. Feed them right.
The National Bird of India needs fresh water and be fed two handfuls of mixed grain every day. This grain can be purchased at most feed stores, and most game bird feed, like pheasant feed, is also fine for half to two-thirds of these omnivore's diet. Also include mixed greens like cabbage or kale.
5. Pay attention to their health.
Peafowl need to be dewormed every two months. Products like Piperazine or Ivermectin cattle wormer can do the trick.
Since peafowl are not common pets or farm animals, there is no established vaccine schedule for them, but avian pox, blackhead disease, and coccidiosis is always a concern. Ask your vet on how to prevent and treat these.
Other fun facts about peafowl?
What about male peafowl, peahens and courtship displays? The eye movements of female peacocks during courtship were mainly concentrated on the male's legs and lower feathers.
There are three species of peacocks: They are Pavo cristatus (Indian peacock), Pavo muticus (Java or green peacock), and Afropavo congensis (Congo peafowl).
Breeding season occurs from spring into early summer,
The peafowl dance honors many peacock species that originated in southeast Asia; it can be found at festivals across both India and Indonesia in places like Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and more!

Want a Pet Fox? Let's Settle on a Name!
Pet foxes are extremely opportunistic and will eat anything (like my chickens) they can find! Foxes can eat a large variety of different foods ranging from mushrooms, berries, fruit and, of course, small animals.
They take a lot of special care, but f you are eager to live with a pet fox, we came up with some names!

When it comes to popular fox names, what about: Fantastic Mr. Fox; Zorro; Megan Fox; Michael J. Fox; Reynard the Fox; Foxy; Scarlett; Silver fox or red fox; What about Vixen?
There are so many famous foxes, too. What about Maid Marian from Disney's Robin Hood? Remember Swiper the Fox from Dora the Explorer? Hey, you could go with a classic like Tod from Fox and the Hound!
The fennec foxes are adorable, weigh between 2 and 4 pounds, and even look like Pokemon. Great names for them could range from Willow to Cooper; have fun with these!
Arctic foxes are typically the most rare. These silver foxes are similar to dogs in many ways, but they're typically expensive to bring home. If you end up with a silver baby fox, try out Silver Surfer or Flash!

I can personally attest to the fact that my cats absolutely adore this wand toy. Just be sure to put it away when it's not in use; cats may manage to get themselves tangled up in the wire.
2. SmartyKat Skitter Critters Catnip Toy
Is there anything better than catnip mice? Most cats would tell you no. Your cat will love to use those hunting instincts during playtime!
This mice trio is perfect for any cat, and the fill is made 100% from recycled plastic so you can feel good about your purchase!
3. Fashion's Talk Cat Toys Variety Pack
Want to cover all your bases when it comes to cat toys? Then this toy assortment is perfect for you.
There are feathers, catnip, jingle balls, and more. What cat could possibly resist these toys?
4. KONG Naturals Incline Scratcher Cat Toy
Now here's a cool toy with a very practical purpose. If your cat has been scratching up the furniture, this scratch pad could help decrease that behavior.
We like the fact that this toy is inclined, and it comes with catnip to help capture your cat's attention.
5. PETFAVORITES Original Mylar Crinkle Balls
Does your cat love crinkly paper? Then he'll likely go nuts for these crinkle toys.
They're the perfect size for batting and they make an irresistible noise when you play with them.
6. Curious Cat Cube, Cat House / Cat Condo
This cat condo is a nice way to give your cat his very own space where he can sleep, lounge, and play. Best of all, it collapses when not in use to save you space.
7. Cat Dancer 101 Interactive Cat Toy
The Cat Dancer may seem simple, but trust me, it totally captivates a cat's attention.
The wire gives the toy lots of spring and the cardboard pieces at the end are simply irresistible for cats.
8. SnugglyCat the Ripple Rug
The Ripple Rug is tons of fun for cats.
It's super versatile- you can rearrange it into endless configurations so your cat always has something new to play with.
9. PetSafe FUNKitty Egg Cersizer Interactive Toy and Food Dispenser
Does your cat gulp his food, or eat all of his cat food at once?
This pet toy encourages your cat to play with his food the way he would do in the wild, making feeding time fun and exciting for your cat.
10. One Fast Cat Exercise Wheel
Does your indoor cat need more exercise than he's currently getting? This exercise wheel could do the trick. Cats need the training to learn to use the wheel, but once they understand what it's for, energetic cats have a new exercise opportunity.
Laser pointers or laser toys can be a dangerous toy for any dog or cat that is OCD or obsesses over things. I wouldn't recommend it. Stick to interactive toys, a mouse cat toy, catnip cat toy, ball toys, a scratching post, cat tree, cat scratchers, organic catnip or anything designed by Jackson Galaxy! Cat owners may try teaser toys or plush toys too.
Cat tunnels are another "agility" type toy that felines love. We'll do a post on cat beds as that is a list that deserves its own article. Some of the electronic cat toys now available are also worth looking at! There is nothing more fun than watching your cat play with mice cat toys!

The 7 Best Indestructible Dog Beds
Is your dog a power chewer? Our staff lives with a few breeds that are notorious chewers! After reviewing beds with our dogs and researching the testimonials we've narrowed down the list to seven indestructible dog beds.
It's important to always redirect chewing when you catch your dog enjoying the corners of the new dog bed you bought them! This could be pointing to separation anxiety or even a medical issue so always make sure you're getting your dog to the vet for regular visits. We'd love to hear from you about these beds as power chewers are challenging when you simply want to give them dog beds for their power naps!
These may not be 100% chew proof but they're close!
Tough Dog Beds
1. PetFusion Large Dog Bed
This bed is designed with a memory foam mattress that is water-resistant and has a tear-resistant cover. This comfy bed will seamlessly blend with your home. Pricing starts at $62.95 and these are available in small to XXL.
2. K9 Ballistics Indestructible Elevated Raised Metal Frame Dog Bed
This metal-framed pet cot is intended for power chewers and will resist about 99 percent of chewing dogs. Enough said, right? Sizes range from small to XXL. Pricing starts at $109.00. Elevated dog beds are perfect for keeping dogs cool in the summertime.
3. goDog Bed Bubble Bolster with Chew Guard Technology
You had us at Chew Guard technology. This bed is great for the inside of a kennel. The Chew Guard technology is for added durability and it fits most standard crates. Sizes range from XS to XXL. Pricing starts at $12.63.
4. Aolvo Indestructible Dog Bed
This pet bed mat is made of high-quality PP cotton and fleece, with no odor, thick and comfortable, can keep the pet mat warm for a long time. It's perfect as a crate mat. Sizes range from small to large and the price starts at $12.59.
5. K9 Ballistics Tough Small Dog Bed
This is the one bed we found for smaller dogs. These dog beds are intended for light to moderate chewers and will resist about 90% of chewing dogs. Colors vary and the price is $69.00.
6. Orvis Toughchew Comfortfill Platform Dog Bed
Orvis won us over. These beds start at $139.00 and range from small to XL.
"The ToughChew ComfortFill Platform Dog Bed is our version of tough love for the chewer: our ultimate chew-resistant fabric features a full ripstop nylon base with a bonded microvelvet top layer, designed to guarantee both superior puncture and tear resistance and an extremely soft feel."
7. Orvis Toughchew Memory Foam Bolster Dog Bed
This memory foam bolster dog bed is constructed with its ultimate chew-resistant fabric. ToughChew fabric features a full ripstop nylon base with a bonded microvelvet top layer, designed to guarantee both superior puncture and tear resistance and an extremely soft feel. It's pricey but the Rolls Royce of dog beds. It starts at $329.00 and sizes range from small to large.
Many brands say they have indestructible dog beds but make sure you read the reviews! These choices above are designed for power chewers and the beds range from chew proof dog beds, waterproof beds, beds made with memory foam material, crate pads for dog crates, and some even have removable covers. Older dogs also benefit from many of these options so it's a win-win for your senior "destructive dog" if they need a new bed that is essentially an orthopedic dog bed made for tough dogs.
Dog owners should also look at the warranty to see if they provide a year warranty or if it's less than a year. Is the bed machine washable or is there a removable cover? Our staff kept those features in mind while we researched this article. If we had to vote for the best indestructible dog bed we'd lean towards the Orvis brand. Staff tip: Another brand to consider is Big Barker for big dogs.
And even moderate chewers benefit from a durable dog bed as you may catch them chewing on the corners every once in a while!
Creative solutions? Have a variety of bed covers that you order proactively when you know your dog isn't a saint. The other tip we recommend is to always have Kongs available and chew toys!

What's the Difference Between a Llama and an Alpaca?
How well do you know your llamas from your alpacas?
Llamas and alpacas are both in the camelid family hailing from South America. At first glance, they look very similar, causing many people to think they're snapping an alpaca selfie at Machu Picchu in Peru when it is in fact a llama deserving the photo bomb credit.
These exotic herd animals have similarities. For one thing, both will spit on you. Llamas and alpacas are both bred for their wool and meat, sometimes even their milk. The camelid cousins do look similar in appearance, but noticeable differences exist. The behavior of each species is different, too.
A good place to start with the difference between alpacas and llamas is with the ears. Llamas have long banana-shaped ears while alpacas have straight ears and they are smaller. Their faces are also a bit different with llamas having a longer face, while an alpaca's face looks smushed. The llama is on the left, and the alpaca on the right!
Llamas are also bigger than alpacas, weighing up to 400 pounds. Average alpacas only get to about 175 pounds. For that reason, llamas are used more as pack-carrying animals on backcountry trips since they can carry heavier loads.
Another difference between the two, is the fur. You may have heard about alpaca wool, which is much softer than a llama's double-layered, coarse outer coat over a softer inner coat. Alpaca fleece has finer fiber and more of it; it comes in 22 colors! There are two different breeds of alpaca used for wool: the Suri and the Huacaya. Alpacas also have a single coat and their hair is better for people who may be allergic to sheep wool guard hairs.
Llamas are known to be good guard animals, while alpacas are a bit more skittish. In fact, some alpaca breeders have llamas in order to protect their alpaca herdmates. Llamas are also easier to train due to their steadfastness and independence. Llamas and alpacas can interbreed and have fertile offspring, but the babies won't be as strong as a true llama nor have as soft as fleece as a true alpaca.
Other fun facts about alpacas?
The belong to the camelidae (camel family) family of course!
Alpaca fiber is much like sheep's wool! It is lacking in lanolin, which makes it hypoallergenic and also allows it to be processed without the need for high temperatures.
The fiber is both flame-resistant and water-resistant
Alpacas come in two types: Suri and the huacaya alpaca. The suri has fiber that grows long and forms silky dreadlocks. The huacaya alpaca has a wooly, dense, crimped fleece.
During breeding, the male alpaca emits a unique throaty vocalization called "orgling." They hum!
Alpacas are domesticated versions of vicugña pacos, South American ruminants that live high in the Andes.
During National Alpaca Farm Days everyone can meet an Alpaca at a local farm!
According to the Alpaca Owners Association, they don't eat much! A 125-lb. (57 kg) animal only eats around 2 lbs. (907 grams) per day (lightweights). This is typical bodyweight.
If you plan to raise alpacas they must be raised in pairs as they can die from loneliness. So make sure your baby alpaca (cria) has a companion. Alpacas spit if they feel threatened. They were raised for natural fiber while llamas were raised to be pack animals. Contact the Alpaca Owners Association for more details.
Did you know there are two other camelids (besides the camel) that resemble alpacas and llamas? Guanacos and vicuñas are also native to South America. The vicuña's fur is known to be softer and warmer than cashmere.

What You Need To Know About Bearded Dragons
Bearded dragons need a variety of greens and vegetables, and it's important to know which ones are safe.
An adult bearded dragon's diet will consist of 80% vegetables and 20% insects. As they get older they will usually show more interest in vegetables.
Here are some diet tips on Bearded Dragon care for anyone that lives with one!
Bearded Dragons eat:
Greens such as kale, arugula, mustard greens, collard greens, and endive.
Squash of all kinds: Acorn squash, butternut squash, yellow squash, and spaghetti squash.
Bell Peppers
Carrots
Some veggies and fruits you can feed occasionally include:
Spinach
Turnip greens
Pumpkins
Okra
Cucumbers (peeled)
Apples
Zucchini
Berries like strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries.
Mangos
Melons
Papayas
Watermelon
Bok Choy
What should Bearded Dragons not eat?
Mushrooms
Citrus of all kinds
Romaine or iceberg lettuce
A few things to note about foods to feed occasionally: fruits should be fed as supplemental foods or treats, as they are very high in sugar.
Why is romaine or iceberg lettuce a problem?
Both types of lettuce have an extremely high water content; while that isn't harmful to your bearded dragon, it means that those types of lettuce have little to no nutritional value. The high water content can also result in loose stools. Spinach, while very good for your bearded dragon, has the same effect.
What about feeder insects you can give them occasionally?
Superworms
Earthworms
Silkworms
Mealworms
Locusts
Waxworms
Dubia roaches
Butterworms
Sometimes it is hard to get a younger bearded dragon or a picky eater to eat their vegetables, it works best if you feed veggies with insects, because the insects will cause the beardie food to move which sometimes will pique their interest. You can also dust their veggies and insects with calcium powder to ensure they're getting the necessary vitamin D3.
What about a basking area or terrarium for your beardie?
A bearded dragon enclosure is the best way to go, because feeding your beardie roaches anywhere else other than a terrarium just doesn't sound like a good idea. Many people look for one that has plenty of space where each door can open separately. The bottom should also be waterproof!
Beardies as a pet reptile would be our top choice for kids too. Once you research a bearded dragon diet, bearded dragon food won't seem so complicated. You can create a bearded dragon care sheet before you bring this popular pet home.
Make sure you do all your research though! Key things to research include female bearded dragons, heat emitters, UVB sources, heat sources, juvenile bearded dragons, proper degrees Fahrenheit, appropriate plant matter, suitable leafy greens, and of course a common name for your new bestie!

Toxic Blue-Green Algae Is Killing Dogs
Pet owners: Beware! Blue-green algae is literally killing dogs that ingest it after swimming in lakes. A few mouthfuls of the algae-contaminated water may result in fatal poisoning. There is no antidote for the toxins produced by blue-green algae, found in freshwater lakes, streams, ponds, saltwater, and brackish water ecosystems.
According to public health officials, these toxic algae blooms happen when nutrient-rich water sits or only moves very slowly. Boiling, filtering, and purifying methods do not render toxic algae-filled water ever safe to drink.
The blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria, turn lakes a distinctive hue when conditions are right for the growth of algal blooms. In addition to producing a thick mat of green scum and an offensive smell, sometimes blue-green algae also produce microcystins, toxins that can be deadly to dogs, livestock and other animals within hours of contact. Caution tape should be added to any area with reported cases.
What are the symptoms? Algae poisoning can cause great damage to the liver, kidney, and nervous system in humans who swallow affected water. It can cause severe vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, angry skin rashes, and other allergic reactions. Ingestion of toxic algae requires immediate medical attention.
Researchers believed the dogs were exposed to the toxins:
Inhalation - 13%
Ingestion - 9%
Skin contact plus ingestion (swimming, with swallowing water or licking fur) - 54%
Unknown - 24%
These toxic blooms are extremely dangerous and dog owners need to be aware of what they're dealing with when they see this pea soup. Most cities will cite when the water quality is an issue and these harmful water conditions are a problem for our dogs. As soon as the warm weather starts the department of health warns pet owners immediately.
Let's be clear about the danger. There is NO antidote after those blue-green algae blooms are ingested by your dog. There are so many health risks when it comes to swimming in lakes even those that look like clean water.
The negative health effects are endless. The cases reported are of dogs drinking water from the lakes and immediately showing these symptoms. Even if they lick their paws after direct contact with the scum is a big problem. Better to just stay away from lakes during those late summer months.

Himalayan Salt Lamp Putting Cat's Life in Danger
Salt lamps are made out of giant hunks of Himalayan salt. They are reported to have various health benefits such as improving sleep, increasing blood flow, and even easing the symptoms of asthma or allergies. Problem is, while your salt lamp may have health benefits for you, it could actually jeopardize your cat's life.
Too much salt is poisonous for both dogs and cats. Salt poisoning can cause serious symptoms in your pet, like vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, lethargy, and even death. Now, cats and dogs do need some salt, in moderation, to keep their bodies functioning. However, the recommended maximum daily salt intake for a cat is 16.7 mg.
As far as home decor goes, it's better to look for a lamp that won't harm your animals! There must be a lamp other than the Himalayan pink salt lamp with health benefits and health claims that also help your overall well-being.
These pink salt crystals are mined in the Himalayan mountains. Essentially the rock salt lamp detoxifies the air and creates a sense of balance which is great! We absolutely understand why an air purifier and air ionization is so great for your home but there are plants that have the same impact and similar beneficial effects. Consider looking at a few special plants instead of this Himalayan salt crystal.
Plants can improve the air quality in your living room and they have their own type of ambiance. Skip this salt rock altogether and choose a plant with orange and pinkish hues instead! If you must have a night light, I've found there are great options in the children's section that have a soft hue (a warm glow) and a dimmer that is very appealing for sleeping. Plants are also known to create positive energy levels.
Just research other options as this crystal salt lamp is causing a lot of harm to cats especially. If you suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD) check with a doctor about what options make the most sense and what types of light sources will work as well as a salt crystal lamp.
