Best Illumination in Tokyo, Japan - Roppongi Keyakizaka (けやき坂イルミネーション)
Keyakizaka is one of the best places to enjoy illumination in Tokyo at Christmastime. It's the perfect date spot because there are several restaurants in the area to suit all budgets.
Looking down Keyakizaka, you can see Tokyo Tower. The bridge between the main development and the Roppongi Hills high end residences is the best spot for photos, and there are markers along the street that let visitors know the best photo spots.

Best Illumination in Tokyo, Japan - Marunouchi Nakadori (丸の内仲通りイルミネーション)
Marunouchi Nakadori is near Tokyo station and the Imperial Palace is the perfect place for a romantic stroll and lots of selfies. During the day, Nakadori is bustling with shoppers visiting the over 900 shops that grace the street. There are restaurants, coffee shops, and high end boutiques. Above the street-level shops are financial institutions and law firms.
In December, Nakadori turns into a winter wonderland, with hundreds of trees all lit up with beautiful lights.

A lifelong dream comes true - entering Sangedatsumon at Zojoji (三解脱門at増上寺)

San'en-zan Kodo in Zojoji
Zojoji was founded in 1393 and was relocated to the present site in 1598.
The main gate was built in 1622, with financial aid from the Tokugawa shogunate.
Passing through this gate is said to cleanse visitors of the 3 worldly afflictions:
Greed,
Anger, and
Ignorance
What makes the Sangedatsumon so special?
It is one of the oldest wooden structures in Tokyo and is an Important Cultural Property. It is also one of the only structures to survive the bombing in WWII.
What made this time so special?
2022 is the 400th anniversary of the building of the gate.
The inside of the main gate is rarely open to the public. The last time was 11 years ago. And it’s set to undergo a 10-year restoration beginning in April 2025, which means the next time it will be open to the public will probably be 2035 or later.
Borrowing from 6th century Chinese architecture, the gate has a ridged, hip-and-gable roof. The bright lacquered exterior was one of the most famous landmarks in Edo (modern-day Tokyo). You might notice that the gate does not have the usual fierce looking guardian statues. This is because Jodo (Pure Land) Buddhism practiced at Zojoji was founded to spread Buddhism to the masses.

Shiba Park, Tokyo, Japan Autumn Leaves 芝公園紅葉 November, 2022
Established in 1873, Shi ba Park is the oldest public park in Japan. It is the perfect place to relax. Alternatively, there are plenty of stairs to climb if you want to get a workout. Enjoy nature in the middle of the city.
You don't have to leave the city to surround yourself in nature. It doesn't feel like downtown Tokyo at all.
Visit the Tokyo Convention & Visitors Bureau website for more information:
https://www.gotokyo.org/en/spot/423/index.html
Access
You can easily access Shiba Park from:
Shiba Koen Station on the Mita Line
Akabanebashi on the Oedo Subway Line
Daimon Station on Oedo Subway Line and Asakusa Subway Line
JR Hamamatsucho on the Yamanote Line.

Things you should never do in Japan
After living in Japan for almost 20 years, I've made every mistake that can be made. Japanese culture is fascinating and very deep. There is always something new to learn. I hope to share some of the things I've learned so you don't make the same mistakes when you travel to Japan.
Try to learn as much etiquette before you visit Japan, but don't worry about getting everything right. People are very forgiving as long as you are respectful and show that you are trying. If all else fails, just watch what other people are doing and copy them.

Am I a weeb?
Recently, someone asked me if I'm a weeb. I didn't really know, so I went to Dictionary dot com and took the weeb test: https://www.dictionary.com/e/slang/weeb/
Does watching anime or reading manga make you a weeb? How about studying Japanese or traveling to Japan? Does enjoying Japanese food or wanting a Japanese boyfriend or girlfriend make you a weeb? These are all very important questions. In my next video, we’ll explore the world of “otaku”.
Thank you, freepngimg.com, for the American flag.

Only in Japan - Missing USB Drive
One of the beautiful things about Japan is amount of respect people have for the property of others. Theft of property and random street crime are very rare. When you travel to Japan, you’ll find people leaving computers, bags, and even mobile phones on their table when they go to the bathroom.

Walking through Meiji Jingu Gyoen
In this video, I walk from Yoyogi to Harajuku. It was taken during my walk around the Yamanote Line. The footage was so beautiful that I thought it warranted its own video, rather than just being a part of the Yamanote Line walk.
I do not visit the Shrine, since that was not the purpose of the walk.
This video is quite different from my other videos. It contains no music, no sound effects, and no challenge to complete. Just a relaxing walk through the park while I give some observations from the last 3 decades of studying the Japanese language and Japanese culture.
Enjoy!

I did it! I finally finished walking around the Yamanote Line! It took 3 attempts, totaling 15 hours and over 75,000 steps, but I did it!
In this video, you'll see the newest station on the Yamanote Line, Takanawa Gateway.
Fun Fact: The Chuo Shinkansen, which is scheduled to open in 2027, will connect Tokyo and Nagoya with a maglev train. The Nagoya to Shin-Osaka section is scheduled to open in 2037.

Walking around the Yamanote Line Part 1
Spoiler alert - it took 3 days.
The Nippon Railway Company opened the train line that became present-day Yamanote Line on March 1, 1885. It ran between Shinagawa Station in the south and Akabane Station in the north. The top part of the loop between Ikebukuro and Tabata (a distance of 3.3 km) opened on 1 April 1903, and both lines were merged to become the Yamanote Line on 12 October 1909.
Station numbering was introduced on JR East stations in the Tokyo area from 20 August 2016. I don’t really like that system because I’d rather learn the train stations. It feels like they’re giving people training wheels.
The Yamanote Line stations use the prefix "JY". Tokyo station is JY01, so let’s start there and walk our way up.

I rode the fastest elevator in Japan!
This elevator, installed by Mitsubishi Elevator, reaches a top speed of 750 meters per minute. The observation deck, Sky Garden, is on the 69th floor. Construction of Landmark Tower started on March 20, 1990. It officially opened on July 16, 1993 and cost ¥270 Billion. That’s about $2.1~2.2 Billion dollars (give or take $100Mil).
Landmark Tower is located on Minato Mirai 21 waterfront in Yokohama, Japan. This is the perfect spot for tourists or locals to see a view of the city. I recommend going at night. It's more romantic. This should be on your top 10 list of things to do in Yokohama. It's also great for traveling with kids in Japan if you're looking for fun things to do in Japan.
UPDATE: The winner has been selected. Congratulations!

I rode the shortest escalator in the world!
This escalator holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s shortest escalator, coming in at 83.4 cm, or 2.7 feet. It's a grand total of 5 steps. It was installed by Hitachi. It only takes a few seconds to ride, and it's 100% free.
This escalator is in the basement of More's department store near Kawasaki JR and Keikyu stations. Kawasaki is just a few stops from Tokyo, Japan. You don't even have to take the bullet train.
