Why can't P&G please deforestation activists?
Procter & Gamble Co. promised decisive action in 2014, after Greenpeace protestors hung 60-foot banners from the company’s headquarters building. “Head & Shoulders: Wipes out dandruff and rain forests,” one banner proclaimed. It was a reference to P&G’s use of palm oil as a key ingredient in shampoo and liquid detergent. The widely used oil comes from plantations that replaced tropical forests in Malaysia and Indonesia.

Beckjord wants to inject chemicals into groundwater -- will it impact drinking water?
Clermont County officials are worried about public drinking water after the Ohio EPA approved an experimental project at the former Walter C. Beckjord coal plant site to allow the injection of new chemicals into the groundwater. The Ohio EPA approved the pilot plan on May 26 — one day after Beckjord owner Commercial Liability Partners and its subsidiary New Richmond Development Corp. submitted it. “The people here in Clermont County need to understand when someone is going to come in and inject chemicals into groundwater upfield from where their drinking water is actually extracted from the ground,” said Clermont County Commissioner David Painter. The Ohio EPA did not notify county officials before approving the plan, and Painter said they only learned of it when WCPO contacted them.

High school students complete PSA on gun violence days before multiple shootings
As Cincinnati saw a series of shootings, a group of Taft High School students released a video telling people to not just put down guns, but take an active role in stopping violence. In this video, a teenager finds a gun, picks it up and shows it off to his friends. Then some of his friends decide to say something to his mother. When he comes home, his mother sits him down and explains why he shouldn't have the gun. It ends with him giving up the gun and nobody gets hurt. "We lost three students at our school to gun violence and I've had neighbors and family members I lost to gun violence," said Thaysha Nelson. Nelson was one of the students who worked on the PSA. For her and other Taft High School students, the message they were trying to send was personal. "People are getting killed and it's sad it just got to stop," said Ta'Kera Orr. "Within the past year, almost two years now, he was shot just walking home."

Free summer program teaches kids inner workings of fashion, entrepreneurship
A free summer program dreamed up by a Cincinnati nonprofit is aimed at teaching kids the inner workings of entrepreneurship, fashion and everything in between. Ashley Zepahua is exactly the kind of kid the founders of Bigger Than Sneakers had in mind when starting the Bigger Than Sneakers Academy. "I’ve always created and tailored my own clothes,” Zepahua said. “I’m not very tall so I don’t fit into a lot of stuff.” The Grant County High School junior already crochets and sews. Now, she gets the chance to learn even more skills. This program immerses kids like her in the fashion industry and teaches them entrepreneurial skills.
