The carnage wrought amongst the stars of theMaelstrom Zoneduring this conflict was such that it rocked the faith and order of untold Imperial worlds never touched directly by its violence, and caused loyal subjects to look upon theirAdeptus Astartesprotectors with fear. Such were the dire sins and hidden truths that lay behind the war, that a pall of secrecy and lies descended about the conflict even as it was fought. The rebellion was eventually put down by the forces of theInquisitionand those Astartes Chapters who remained steadfast in their duty to theEmperor of Mankind, but its instigators, the Astral Claws, wholly given over toChaosin the course of the conflict, turned Renegade and its survivors become the infamous piratical band ofChaos Space Marinesknown as theRed Corsairs. The Red Corsairs are led by the treacherousChaos LordnamedHuron Blackheart, a viciousChampionofChaos Undividedwho is now nearly unrecognisable as the once-noble Lufgt Huron. Blackheart and the Red Corsairs currently dominate a large Chaos empire within theWarp riftknown as theMaelstromin theEastern Fringesof the galaxy. There Blackheart plots his vengeance upon the Imperium and prepares to build a new empire dedicated to theRuinous Powersthat will bring the demesne of theTraitor Legionswithin theEye of Terrorto shame.

Galaxy In Flames is a novel by Ben Counter and a third book in the Horus Heresy Series. The third installment of the trilogy showing Horus's fall to Chaos, focuses on the tragic events on Isstvan III, where the loyalist factions of the Traitor Legions were slaughtered with the use of Virus bombs deployed by Horus's fleet. It is the announcement to the galaxy of the fall of Horus and the beginning of the Horus Heresy. The novel was first published in October 2006. Each print run has a different colour for the titles: First was gold, second in silver and third in bronze. It was later included in "The Novels: Volume 1" eBook collection, and it was included as part of the Crusade's End omnibus, released in paperback on March 8, 2016.
