The 1835 Assassination Attempt on Andrew Jackson
It is January 30th, and 188 years ago today the nation was shocked by the first known assassination attempt on a sitting president of the United States. The attempt by Richard Lawrence on the life of President Andrew Jackson was, in itself, high drama, and his trial one of great attention. And yet, even an assassin turned out to be far less interesting than Washington Politics.

The Legend of Tarzan
The film Tarzan of the Apes was released 105 years ago in 1918. The film represented significant milestones in the film industry, and was emblematic of its times. What’s more, it represents the enduring popularity of a fiction icon that, some say, might actually have been based on a real person.

On today’s episode, The History Guy tells the story of two foods, from their earliest origins to their contentious issues with government regulations. First is the story of sliced bread. Humans have baked bread for millennia, but automatically sliced bread is a relatively recent technology that nonetheless significantly altered society. Second, the History Guy talks about Cranberries, specifically American cranberries, and what makes them unique, up until one of the first “great food scares” of the twentieth century.

In 1914, Millions of people in German occupied territory in Belgium and France were facing the very real threat of starvation. Pottery and Revolution
Click this link to make some cash for giving your opinion! https://www.inflcr.co/SHFo7 Thanks YouGov for sponsoring!
There were “rebellious” activities in colonial America well before the French and Indian War and the series of governmental acts that would eventually culminate in the American Revolution. The history of the ‘poor potter’ of Yorktown, and how his business reflected the growing desire for American independence, deserves to be remembered.

On today’s episode, The History Guy tells the history of two kinds of animals and their use in warfare, especially their use in WWI. First he tells the story of Pigeons, from their domestication to their use as messengers on European battlefields in WWI. Then he tells the story of mercy dogs, also called hospital dogs, who searched the barren “no man’s land” for injured soldiers throughout the Great War.

The Badger Ordnance Works
Moving the US to a war footing before and during the Second World War was probably the largest industrial shift in American history. In rural Wisconsin, the largest munition factory in the world sprung up as if out of nowhere, just one of many military facilities the size of cities built to help meet the needs of a global war.
Special thank you to Badger History Group Inc. https://www.badgerordnancehistory.org/about_us-1d.html
The Museum of Badger Army Ammunition would not exist without the stories of the Badger Ordnance Works/Badger Army Ammunition Plant (BOW/BAAP). Those of you watching this on YouTube would not be, because without the BOW/BAAP this story would not exist. We have been told that the Badger History Group, Museum of Badger Army Ammunition is the only museum dedicated to telling the story of one of these Ammo Plants. -Verlyn Mueller

The 1918 "Polar Bear" Expedition
Despite the distraction of the ongoing World War, troops from thirteen nations were involved in the Russian Civil War, fighting over a variety of goals and objectives. Among those was the United States, which had troops fighting in the bitter Russian cold even after the war in Europe came to an end.

Christmas Flowers and Foreign Wars: Joel Roberts Poinsett
The bright red flower called the poinsettia has become a traditional part of American Christmas celebrations. But the flower’s common name, which, while it sounds exotic, has nothing to do with the native name for the plant, is a reference to an American diplomat of whom a 1929 edition of the Baltimore Evening Sun wrote “His Career was as flamboyantly colorful as the poinsettia, and yet he is almost forgotten.”

Winston Churchill's Christmas at the White House
Christmas 1941 was not the first time that Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill had met in person, nor would it be the last. But the meeting over the first holiday season as allies in the largest war in human history was, perhaps, the most consequential, and, quite possibly, the most important Christmas ever at the White House.

Most people know about the US mints in Philadelphia and Denver. On today’s episode, the History Guy talks about America’s forgotten mints. First he talks about the numerous mints that dotted the American frontier, from Georgia to Louisiana to Nevada. Then he takes us across the Pacific to the only American mint built on foreign soil: the mint in Manila, capital of the Philippines.

Last Cruise of USS Saginaw
On December 19, 1870 a small boat arrived off the Hawaiian island of Kauai. Caught in the breakers, the vessel capsized, and its crew of five men were thrown into the ocean. Three drowned, one died of his injuries, and just one man, described as a starved, emaciated skeleton, crippled by a splinter in his leg, was found alive by an island local. That man, Coxswain William Halford, USN, told an incredible story of survival, and of an urgent mission.

For European peasants winter was an especially difficult time, but some winters are more difficult than others. In the fifteenth century, a series of particularly bad winters struck throughout the 1430s, causing famine, exacerbating disease, and changing culture.

The Forgotten 1202 earthquake
For most of human history, the disasters wrought by nature were utterly unpredictable, their causes wholly unknown. They were merely a random act of God that could lay waste to whole cities without warning. On the morning of May 20, 1202, thousands of people across an enormous swath of the Earth experienced such destruction.
