You might not think of New York City as a Garden, yet, at one time, one of the most fabulous gardens on the continent bloomed where today some of the city’s most famous buildings stand. You might never have heard of David Hosack, but he deserves to be remembered, as well as the now forgotten place where they paved paradise, and put up a parking lot.

Umami: A History of Monosodium Glutamate
In 1907 a professor of chemistry at Tokyo Imperial University named Kikunea Ikeda was eating dinner when he noticed that his broth was particularly delicious. A year later, on July 25, 1908 he determined why. Professor Ikeda had identified a chemical compound that today represents a nearly seven billion dollar industry, and one of the world’s most common, and controversial food additives. The complex history of the sodium salt of gluconic acid called "monosodium glutamate" deserves to be remembered.

On today’s episode, the History Guy tells two stories of Spanish North America. Before the Dutch, English, or French had sent colonists across the Atlantic, Spain was conquering kingdoms and empires in Mexico and Peru. But they laid claim to lands far afield, and left their mark - both literally, at the El Morro site in New Mexico, and in history, when imperial posturing on a small island near Vancouver nearly sent Europe to war.
