The Boardgame Mechanics Review The Acts: Letters From Rome

The Acts returns with the all new Letters from Rome expansion. Compatible with both the first edition and deluxe edition copies of the base game, Letters from Rome offers new strategies for adding believers as you can now travel all the way to Italia on your mission. Along with a sideboard depicting Italia as a seventh accessible region, there are epistles that can be delivered, tithes generated by churches, and more to take into account as you spread the word.
Letters from Rome remains a tight, worker placement game with multiple paths to victory. In addition to the actions from the base game, players can now gain coins as tithes from their churches, and collect epistles for both immediate rewards and set collection end game bonuses. Coins can be used to book passage to Rome, enlarge your churches, and to feed and care for the crowds while preaching. Beware, hording coins can lead to corruption, costing you believers over time.
Take on the added challenges as you spread from Judea throughout the Roman Empire to share the gospel message. Although true to the Bible, no Biblical knowledge is required to play and enjoy.

The Boardgame Mechanics Review Fluxx: The Board Game

Fluxx: The Board Game lives up to its card game namesake as this board game is all about change: changing rules, changing goals, and changing tiles on the board.
Players start the game with their three pieces in the center of a 3x3 grid of tiles, with each tile divided into four spaces and each space showing an icon of some type (chocolate, sun, cookies, etc.) or an octagon or a portal. Players each start with three cards in hand, and the overall goal of the game is to collect 3-6 goal cards, with the exact number possibly changing during play.
On a turn, a player draws one card, plays one card, then moves one space, with all of those values being subject to change during gameplay; depending on what's currently allowed by the rules, you can also use movement points to rotate or move tiles in the play area. If you have a piece on each icon shown on the topmost goal card in play, you claim that card and are that much closer to winning. Players can also claim goal cards they have in hand by, again, placing their pieces on the appropriate icons. Other cards in the game allow players to change the rules, the game board, the ownership of player pieces, and so on.

You play several rounds. In each round you play cards in front of you in order to secure suitable cards from the middle and place them in front of you. The number of your most collected color cards minus the least collected color cards is your score at the end of a round. You collect points over several rounds until someone has exceeded the total target number of points. This ends the game. Whoever has the most points at the end wins.

On the day when the last snowflake of winter has melted away, all of the critters emerge from their cozy homes to celebrate...and that day is today! Maple Valley's annual Spring Festival is a gathering of friends welcoming the warm months ahead, and you don't have a lot of time to prepare!
While the adults get the village into shape, the youngest (and swiftest) forest animals from each den are sent scrambling through the blossoming woods, completing the last-second tasks that will make the Festival a success. The trails aren't always clear; you'll need to climb, swim, and dig your way to the most bountiful groves, forage for fresh spring ingredients to help villagers complete their errands, and unearth curiosities that will attract skillful scouts to your growing team. The sun will set before you know it; will it be your hard work that makes this year's Festival the best one ever?
Set in the delightful world of Creature Comforts, Maple Valley is a game of traveling trails, finding friends, and celebrating new beginnings for 1-5 critters.

The Boardgame Mechanics Review Forest Shuffle

In Forest Shuffle, players compete to gather the most valuable trees, then attract species to these trees, thus creating an ecologically balanced habitat for flora and fauna.
To start, each player has six cards in hand, with cards depicting either a particular type of tree or two forest dwellers (animal, plant, mushroom, etc.), with these latter cards being divided in half, whether vertically or horizontally, with one dweller in each card half.
On a turn, either draw two cards — whether face down from the deck or face up from the clearing — and add them to your hand, or play a card from your hand by paying the cost, then putting it into play.
During set-up, three winter cards were placed into the bottom third of the deck. When the third winter card is drawn, the game ends immediately, then players tally their points based on the trees and dwellers in their forest. Whoever scores the most points wins.
Forest Shuffle is the first in a line of Lookout games sporting the Lookout Greenline label, produced on FSC certified paper and avoiding plastic completely.

Organized crime has overtaken the city. Headquarters wants you and your team to infiltrate the ranks, identify the key players, and break up the syndicate. Do you have what it takes to put a stop to their insidious operations?
In The Feds, players are leaders of FBI units seeking to send agents out to combat crime by arresting criminals. The game is heavily inspired by Gunrunners, an earlier game by the same designer and publisher.
The game is played over a series of rounds. In each round, players simultaneously choose an agent card to play from their hand and a location to play it. In turn order, players then deploy their agents as moles (face-down) to the chosen locations. If a mole is already at a location, that mole is revealed and is now a "field agent". Sometimes, when a mole is revealed, a special power will be performed by the owning player of the mole (some agent cards have powers). These special powers change from game to game for variety of play (based on the City Card being used for the game). They do such things as forcing criminals to move, redeploying agents to new locations, making small arrests, and so on.
At the end of the game, each location is scored and players arrest criminals based on their agent powers at each location.

On the warmest nights of the year, the otherwise quiet waters are filled with shimmering lights as the dormant noctiluca awaken. Renowned for their restorative properties, the noctiluca are desired by many healers. Only the most skilled divers can navigate the waters to collect these mysterious glowing creatures and deliver them to healers across the land. Can you catch the embers of the sea?
In Noctiluca, 104 colorful translucent dice fill the pool on the game board to represent the different glowing noctiluca. Players take turns diving into the water from the edges of the shore to collect the noctiluca dice from the board and keep them safely in jars until they can deliver them to healers. After two rounds, players compare points from their successful deliveries and the player with the most points wins.
Thanks to a double-sided game board, Noctiluca also includes a solo mode in which one player must rescue the noctiluca from the tempest.

In Tales of the Arabian Nights, you are the hero or heroine in a story of adventure and wonder just like those told by Scheherazade to her spellbound sultan! You will travel the land seeking your own destiny and fortune. You will learn stories and gain wisdom to share with others. Will you be the first to fulfill your destiny? The next Tale is yours to tell! There is, of course, a winner in Tales of the Arabian Nights, but the point of the game is less to see who wins and more to enjoy the unfolding and telling of a great story!
In this new edition of the groundbreaking storytelling game, you enter the lands of the Arabian Nights alongside Sindbad, Ali Baba, and the other legendary heroes of the tales. Travel the world encountering imprisoned princesses, powerful 'efreets, evil viziers, and such marvels as the Magnetic Mountain and the fabled Elephant's Graveyard.
Choose your actions carefully and the skills you possess will reward you: become beloved, wealthy, mighty - even become sultan of a great land. Choose foolishly, however, and become a beggar, or be cursed with a beast's form or become insane from terror! YOU will bring to life the stories of the inestimable Book of Tales in this vastly replayable board game with over 2002 tales that will challenge, amuse, astound and spellbind you for years to come.
