How to Make Your Own Rope / Cordage!
Saturday has come again and today we're looking at a basic outdoor skill that is actually really easy, yet rarely used by most people. Making your own cordage/rope (I use them interchangeably), is one of the easiest things to do in the wild if you know how. I'm going to demonstrate here the reverse wrap and show how to peel the inner bark (phloem layers) from a vine.

The Beautiful and Deadly Wisteria - An Amazing Plant!
Wisteria is one of the most beautiful and recognizable climbing vines in the eastern and southern US. However, I bet most people have no idea what is really neat about this plant. That's what I tried to show here. We did get fairly lucky by finding the mother-load of wisteria vine patches! It's really an amazing plant.

One small thing helping wildlife conservation today... (Not with coronavirus directly)
Coronavirus has brought up some issues around human-wildlife interactions. Could this pandemic be one solution to wildlife conservation of certain animals? Probably.
If I've learned anything about conserving animals though, is that there are thousands of solutions and there is nothing that's black and white. We all need to think outside of the box if we're going to make an impact.
So this story, is a success story. It's not directly related to what's happening in the pandemic, other than it made it more difficult to shoot. But it is a great example of how a group of people are helping with something that seems so simple. I think we can all learn from this. Maybe it'll allow others to think about alternatives to our current approaches in the other areas that need our attention.
Stay healthy and stay in if you can. Thanks always for watching the videos I put out. I'll probably be able to put out a few more in the coming months, as I lost all my current storytelling jobs. Literally this pandemic is shutting all of my travel down. But that's cool (I guess), because I still have a lot to share.
Because of that I want to give a big shoutout to all current and future patrons who are helping fund this science and filmmaking outreach via patreon: http://bit.ly/2Sfmkph - While the number is still small, it does allow me to keep moving forward on this platform. That's amazing.

HI, I'm Rob - Founder of StoneAgeMan
I'm Rob Nelson, and I thought I'd introduce myself today.
I sat on this video for over a month now, trying to figure out if I should even release a video that essentially falls into the category of "Bio about Me." But, I thought, should I fall ill or should my parents fall ill, I'd probably want them to see this. So, I'm not sure who this is for, but I'm putting it out anyhow. Stay safe everyone!

What Is & IS NOT a 4-Leaf Clover
It's Saint Patrick's Day and the four leaf clover is the icon of the event. But, I've found many people mistake certain plants for clovers. Today we're looking at the basics of the clover and finding a way to do something useful and fun with the kids on this day in quarantine.

Northern Fur Seals at the New England Aquarium
Sometimes I do work with zoos and aquariums and sometimes I get to make behind the scenes videos about it. I made this short film at the New England Aquarium and was pretty amazed at how much everyone cares. I see this all the time with zoos and aquariums, but marine mammal folks really are one of the nicest groups. I hope this short was able to show that.

Is Hunting Conservation?
Last week I spent some time down in southern Georgia at a bit of a think-tank meetup for conservation minded biologists and scicommers. The whole thing was setup by my wonderful friends at the Jones Center at Ichauway, who is dedicated to doing great conservation in Longleaf pine forests. I've been out here before looking at the fire they use to promote diversity in the habitat. Now, I got the opportunity to go with them on one of the traditional quail hunts that essentially started this entire movement.

Taut line Hitch: The Camping Knot Series
The taut line hitch is a friction-type hitch that can be tied on a rope that is under tension. It's also an adjustable knot. That makes is a useful camping knot, especially when rain-flies for tarps are being tied down.
The taut line hitch, however, should not be used if there is considerable strain on the rope, since there is the potential that it could slip under large forces. Taut line knots should also only be used in ropes that handle bends and turns easily. Many of the newer ropes, like climbing ropes, do not hold the taut line hitch well. Feel free to use the time-codes here to skip the the pertinent section of the video:

The Gopher Frog is Endangered and We're Helping Give it a Head Start
The gopher frog is one of the rare amphibians that lives in the sandhills and longleaf pine forests of the south-east. I got to go out with Dustin's team at the NC zoo who is working with the NC Wildlife resource commission to help these frogs. It's amazing work that is helping, but it can't be done alone. The first part is making sure people know what's happening. That's why I shot this.

The Science of the Red Wolf: Will they survive their own apocalypse?
This is the little known story of the true American Wolf - the Red Wolf. If you haven't heard the story of this wolf, you're not alone. Few have told it and more need to hear it. It's currently considered one of the rarest mammals in the world and only a dozen or two are thought to exist in the wild. Our goal, catch them on camera and understand what we can about this beautiful canid!
If you're not a patron yet, can I suggest taking a look at what I'm doing with it here: I can't tell these stories without help, and this is how I'm able to have some extra time to do that http://bit.ly/2Sfmkph

How to plant a tree in a few easy steps: TREE GUIDE 101
Planting the right trees in your own yard or near where you live is one of the best things you can do to help habitat for native wildlife. You can do it wrong, so I made this guide to make sure you're doing it right!

Eat these 5 WILD weeds (5 Plants You Can Eat)
If you're under the assumption that every wild plant is potentially dangerous and that you shouldn't attempt to eat wild plants, this video is for you. Nothing could be farther from the truth (with some caution taken of course). This is how we lived for hundreds of thousands of years, and it's healthy to get some of this knowledge back. It'll be enjoyable while you're out and about and it'll be fun to show your friends. Plus, who knows, maybe it'll save your life one day.
Here are 5 (+1) edible wild plants, I enjoy eating on the trail.
Dandelions
Currants
Onions
Alfalfa
Violets
Indian Paintbrush

CottonWoods Are Incredibly Useful: 7 Things You Need to Know About These Trees
I made this video because the cotttonwood tree is so incredibly useful and interesting. I wanted to share. It is both a medicine and a wood resource. I'm not tackling the medicines in the fullest detail it needs but I did want to bring it up. I will create another video on how to prepare it and what chemistry is behind it if people want - let me know below.
This particular tree is a black cottonwood tree found in Wyoming. They love the lowland and wet areas and are massive trees. They're also really beneficial trees if you know how to take advantage of many of their qualities. Here we are looking at all the things you can use them for.
Resin starts at 5:11
Hazen and I wanted to tackle this for our #teamtrees video. We're planting trees this week, but as not all trees are created equally, we wanted to do a quick overview about this particular tree.
