Gorilla Shufai’s Cheeky Antics — Challenges with Oumbi and Rolling Escapades
Gorilla youngster Shufai from Twycross Zoo is playing with the door flap, beating his chest at it. He's actually egging on his dad, who is behind the flap. Boxing the flap and biting it, it seems to be tiring work, as he starts to yawn repeatedly. Then, all of a sudden, he hits the flap again as he sees a shadow—his dad is coming out. As always, the magnificent Oumbi’s presence and size earn him some admiration from the visitors. The silverback stops as his son pretends he’s done nothing, acting sweet and innocent. Shufai rolls away when his dad comes over, and the silverback sits down, taking a little rest by the hut. Biddy is dragging her stick behind her, with Ozala just behind. A close-up of Oumbi’s handsome face shows as the silverback goes inside. Shufai beats his chest again at the door, and Oumbi has a quick look. Soon after Oumbi is out again, but about to go inside with some grass or weeds he picked in his hand when he suddenly turns around and snaps at his son, who was following him a bit too closely. Shufai still follows and has a look through the door, but then he beats his chest, hits the flaps, runs off, and rolls down the slope. At the bottom, he grabs a big stick, peeling off the bark with his teeth. He then gets back up again and starts running with the big tree branch dragged behind him. He has another roll, only letting go of the branch mid-roll.

First Boredom, Then Gorilla Play Shufai’s Day Takes a Turn
Gorilla Shufai leans back, resting against the bridge straps that were reinstalled. He seems a bit bored, but then things take a turn.
He throws himself onto the ground, holding onto the bridge, but almost immediately gets up again. Not only that, but he sniffs the bridge and then uses it as a hammock. After a minute, he gets back down onto the ground.
His mother, Ozala, comes close. He quickly gets up to stay out of her way. Ozala grabs the stick and pulls it away, but surprisingly, not to eat it! If you know Ozala, you'll understand why this is even more surprising—she loves her food. She squeezes under the bridge, rolls onto her back, and moves closer to her son. She puts her hand on his back, and Shufai starts to wrestle with his mum, who is quite happy to let him play. He rolls over onto her belly. They wrestle, and then Shufai is seen sitting on his mother. His behaviour may suggest an attempt at mating, but it's important to note that Shufai is castrated. I did some research on this, and there is more information below.
He gets off his mum, and they both wrestle again.
Given that Shufai was castrated at a young age and is now nearly 8 years old, it's likely that his behaviour is influenced by his upbringing within the troop and the social dynamics he's observed over time. Castration at a young age would have significantly reduced his testosterone levels, which usually limits the development of sexual behaviours and reduces the likelihood of him being seen as a threat by the silverback.
However, even with low testosterone, some social and instinctual behaviours might still manifest, especially as he grows older and becomes more aware of the interactions within the troop. These behaviours might not be as intense or as hormonally driven as they would be in an intact male, but they could still occur due to learned behaviour or residual instincts.
The silverback's lack of intervention suggests that Shufai is not perceived as a significant threat or rival. Since Shufai has been part of the troop from a young age and likely doesn't exhibit the full range of typical male behaviours due to his castration, the silverback might tolerate his presence and actions. The social bonds and hierarchy within gorilla troops are complex, and the silverback might recognise that Shufai does not pose a challenge to his dominance.

From Barrel Punches to Popcorn Shufai’s Busy Day at Tycross Zoo
*From barrel punches to popcorn, Shufai at Tycross Zoo. His mother Ozala chases him for misbehaving. Silverback Oumbi eats below while Biddy watches.*
Gorilla Shufai from Tycross Zoo is dismounting the platform, runs to the new barrel and punches it. His mother Ozala was on the other side and not pleased with him doing that, so she chased after him. Ozala stares at him, giving him the evil eye until he moves away. Moments later, you can see in her stance that Ozala is still not happy with him. If it was Lope he wouldn't have stopped, but Shufai took the hint and moved away. Ozala relaxed and sat down so did Shufai.
A little later, Shufai comes out with a lot of wood wool, holding it in his arms and rolls through the grass with it.
He enjoys sitting in the tree and eating his leaves. Silverback Oumbi down below. Eating a leave and getting his branch take away to eat inside. Shufai is sitting on the stone like it's a chair and having some more browse.
At lunch time they had some popcorn. Not a lot, but at least something other than just cabbage. Shufai and Ozala had most of it.
Biddy kept her eye on the silverback. Ozala eats her cabbage on the slope.
Asante has some leaves by the tree.
Next Friday back to the the Gorilla Greenhouse at Beauval's Zoo, France.

Playful Gorilla Brothers Kovanga, M'baku, and Yamba
*Gorilla youngsters Kovanga and M'baku continue their playful antics. Yamba skips by the pool, while the brothers chase each other. Kovanga takes a tumble, but quickly recovers.*
Gorilla youngsters Kovanga and M'baku are continuing their fun in this compilation. Yamba skippes past the pool.
The brothers chase each other with Kovanga running through the pool and on the way back stops in the pool to have a drink.
In the next clip M'baku pushes Kovanga off the rock after a wrestle, in slow you can see that Kovanga still tries to grab the rope but misses it and he falls to the ground. That's quite a drop, but luckily he seems fine and runs off.
Yamba gets up, tries to pull the branch off the platform and then runs off.
In the other direction, Silverback Asato across the room in pursued by his son. Some high-speed action between the youngest brothers. Kovanga has another drink. Mum Kabinda is watching the action.
Mapenzi is beating his chest. In the next footage, it's either Mayélé or Kiwano as they both hold their ears. The arms are crossed over the back and then even starts walking like that with the ears covered. Not sure why they do this. You would think it's really noisy in there. I'm sure it can be at times like all zoos, but at the time of my visit it was very quiet and hardly any people in there.
Yamba is playing with Kiwano. M'baku swinging on the ropes. Mayélé sitting at the top.

Twycross Zoo Gorillas - Shufai's Leaf Dilemma: What’s Hiding in the Branch?
*Twycross Zoo Gorillas: Grandma enjoys lunch while Shufai faces a leaf dilemma. Something in the branch makes him reluctant to touch it. Oumbi and Ozala investigate. At lunch, Shufai tightrope walks for cabbage*
As promised, I'll keep you up to date with the Gorilla family from Twycross Zoo.
Next week, more from the ZooParc de Beauval in France.
Gorilla Grandma has got her table to eat her lunch. Shufai has an issue with the branch of leaves. There must be an insect or something in there as he's reluctant to touch it. He takes a different branch instead. Oumbi and Ozala go and check it out as well, with Silverback Oumbi having a real close look. Ozala has another look. Shufai now sits in the bunk above, looking down at it. I zoomed in closer but couldn't see anything obvious. When Shufai sits on the log, he looks at it again and wipes it across the floor.
Outside, Asante sits on the top of the climbing frame while the others are busy inside. At lunch, everyone is outside. Today for lunch, it seems like they are getting a Napa cabbage. Shufai comes out, tightrope walking to the hut's roof to get his lunch, with Grandma Biddy down below. Shufai got the cabbage out of the barrel, and Ozala collects it down at the bottom. She takes it up high to enjoy her food on top of the platform. Down below, Oumbi and Biddy are enjoying theirs in harmony for a change. Biddy is on alert, though, when he walks by her. The last clip shows Biddy having a scratch.

Gorilla Lope Loves His Snow Snack
Gorilla Lope from the Twycross zoo climbs up to the platform. There is quite a bit of snow on the ground, but understandably they do prefer the fresh snow on the platforms. He gathers all the snow together carefully. Compacting it nicely with his hands. It isn't very good snowman snow as it doesn't stick together so it's more difficult for him to get a whole chunk as it all falls apart again, but he manages it and why not have an extra snack on the go before going back into the warmth in the typical Lope swagger. It's doesn't take long before he's back out again to get some more. This time he takes his time and even has a sit down with a big chunk of snow in his hand before he goes back inside.

Proud gorilla mom shows off her baby born in lockdown
Finally, after the lockdown, I got the chance to see Touni's baby boy at the Bristol Zoo. He was born during the lockdown on the 22nd of December 2020, when no one could travel. This month (April 2021), they named him Juni, a combination of his parents Jock and Touni. It took a bit of waiting on the day for Touni to come out, with her little boy on her back and what a handsome fellow he is.
There are two young girls in the family, Afia, and Ayanna, and now we have two baby boys Hasani and Juni. You might be wondering how Hasani is. This is Kala's baby boy, but unfortunately, she couldn't feed him properly, so he had to be hand-raised. Hasani is still at Bristol Zoo, but I could not see him, and while I was there, the gorillas were locked in for a few hours. This was so that Hasani could be slowly integrated back to the family. This obviously takes time and isn't done in a day. I'll keep you updated, and if I know something new and if he's back with the family, I will travel down to see him. Juni is holding on tight to his mum. It always amazes me how they can hold on when they're that little, even in their sleep.
Touni is certainly giving my camera movements a workout, following her through the bushes and behind the trees, and in the end, she made a dash for the inside, running up those wooden log stairs with Juni still holding on tight, and he seems to enjoy the ride. I can't wait to see all the siblings play together. Oh, my two gorilla rascal girls and two boys, what could go wrong lol. Touni was born on the 12th of December 2007 at the La Vallée des Singes and moved to the Bristol Zoo on the 28.September 2015. Her firstborn is her daughter Ayana who was born on the 22nd of April 2017.

Twycross Zoo Gorilla Family After The Lockdown
And we're back...... finally, covid lockdown is over and the zoos are open again, beautiful weather and I'm able to show you new footage again. Yesterday there was Willliam the Chimpanzee and today we're back with our favourite family, the Twycross Zoo gorillas.
It's nice to see Biddy was the first one out. Even before lockdown, we haven't seen Biddy since before Lope's Birthday in January. She didn't show up for Lope's birthday and the keepers said she was fine, just staying in the back, out of the cold, but you still worry and it's not like her not to make an appearance all day even though she is an older lady. That's why it's especially nice seeing her tucking into the salad and broccoli first thing this morning. Gorilla Lope came strolling out afterwards and sat by the hut. Not for long and he gets back up again, strolling along back to the door, the Lope way. He has a chest beat of whoever sat by the door, which was most likely Shufai his little brother. Lope gets a stick and sits against the warm wall. He seems to have a few more bold patches. Hopefully just because he's playing rough with his brother.
Shufai had a mohawk hairstyle before the lockdown, but that seems to have grown back now. He comes from the other side. His upper arms and legs are definitely getting bigger and more musculus. Lope beats his chest at him as he's coming closer. Lope looks in my direction and then back to Shufai. He then throws the stick at Shufai and Shufai looks at him as to say "what did you do that for". He then positions himself in front of Lope, stays there for a minute, Lope just looking at his younger brother. Shufai has a half-hearted chest beat, has a quick look in the window and walks away. Lope is sucking his thumb. A little later Asante, Lope's and Shufai's aunt is coming out into the sun. She sits down with her stick. Don't jump, as Shufai and Lope suddenly come out bombing past her. At feeding time, Silverback Oumbi is making an appearance as well. He seems to prefer the beans, just like the Silverback Jock at the Bristol zoo and leaves the other food. For now anyway. I'm sure he will get to the salad leaves later. The brothers make a quick getaway when their dad comes close. Lope walking upright ones more and again keeping his distance from dad. It is feeding time after all, you wouldn't want to be too close. Last but not least, Mum Ozala on top of the hut, enjoying her food. A shot from later in the evening when you can see the whole family outside, dotted all over the place. Can you spot who is who?
The gorilla current family at Twycross consists of 6 members, which are Oumbi, Ozala, Biddy, Asante, Lope and Shufai
Oumbi ( 30 June 1992) Sons : Okanda 17 Apr 2011 born at Twycross Zoo, Hand raised now at München Hellabrunn Germany)
Lope ( 3rd Jan 2013) and Shufai (24th Sep 2016) both born at Twycross Zoo in England and they are still at the Zoo.
Ozala (19 Mar 1994) , she had three sons and one daughter. Ozala's first mate was Ti . Ozala and Ti had Matadi on the 25th of May 2003 at Twycross Zoo. Then they had their daughter Ndoki on the 3rd of May 2007, but she sadly died on the 29th Aug 2007, unknown cause.
Matadi is at the Antwerp Zoo in Belgium with his mate Mayani and they had a baby girl called Thandie! ( Don't miss the footage from Antwerp on this channel: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXC1aShJSBiWoP6Dq9WJ9iSyKrLU2C89_)
Matadi had another baby girl in June 2020 this time with Mambele and she's called Vizaza.
Ti died in 26 Feb 2007, the cause of it was a stroke. Oumbi got moved to Twycross Zoo in 2009 to mate with the females. Ozala was Oumbi chosen mate.
Asante (6th Jun 1985) is Ozalas half-sister. She hasn’t got any offspring.
Biddy is Ozalas Mum as she was born in the wild in 1973, there is no record of siblings or parents. Her offspring are Mambie and Ozala.

Tense clash of female gorillas at Bristol Zoo
The female gorillas from the Bristol Zoo are having an intense quarrel. They're wrestling and throwing straw at each other. Kala is the newcomer and the females are a bit jealous of her, as she gets on quite well with the silverback Jock. When Kala choose the spot on the hut, Kukena wasn't happy. She climbed on top of the hut and gets close to Kala. Kala starts throwing the straw in the air and they both end up wrestling. Kala then runs away with Kala following her. Kukena climbs back on the hut and so does Kala, but Kukea jumps straight back down again when she sees Kala. Nature can be intense!

Gorilla youngster shows off his new favorite "toy"
Gorilla youngster Koundi got hold of some netting. Probably where the straw has been held in for their semi-outdoor enclosure. Now at the outdoor garden, he's running around with netting having some fun. He loves dragging it behind him, but unfortunately, it gets stuck on the plant.
Howletts Park And the sister park Port Lympne wildlife park are both run by the Aspinall Foundation. They are world leaders in breading gorillas, but what makes this special is that some gorillas get released back into the wild! The foundation has one million acres in the Congo and Gabon Africa where they have successfully reintroduced 50 gorillas and celebrated more than 20 births. The foundation has also returned 9 gorillas born in the two wildlife Parks Howlett and Port Lympne. In 2013 they introduced a whole family of gorillas back to Africa. Not only gorillas get reintroduced back to the wild in Africa. Rhinos are relocated to Tanzania, primates to Indonesia, European bison to Romania and Spain and clouded leopards to Cambodia. Just recently two cheetahs Saba & Nairo's moved by The Aspinall Foundation from the UK to a new life in the wilderness of their ancestral homeland of South Africa, the Ashia Cheetah Sanctuary to settle in and prepare for the wild!

Gorilla youngster chases rabbit around his enclosure
Gorilla youngster Koundi, the western lowland gorilla youngster is from the Port Lympne Wildlife Park. He was born on the 12th of May 2016. He has some fun in this video, chasing after the rabbit, but the rabbit is just too fast for him and just hides in the rocks. Koundi has a look where the rabbit went and seemed surprised it's gone. So he huffs and walks off. When the rabbit comes back out, Koundi watches closely from his ropes. You get the impression the rabbit enjoys the chase as much as Koundi, as he just runs towards the gorilla youngster and past him like he wants to tease him. It worked and Koundi started the chase again. Watch the rabbit as it slows down around the wooden barrier like he is waiting for Koundi to catch up. In the end, he does give up and the rabbit happily munches on the grass. Kouni sits on the climbing frame and claps his hands.

Gorillas totally spooked by something in the grass
Ozala the gorilla mother gets startled by something in the grass. She tries to wipe over it with her arm, which makes Grandma Biddy jump. Ozala is still staring at the grass with her food in her hands and feet. Her eldest son Lope has a quick look as well but then decides to go in. The next clip is of Lope going towards the hut and suddenly moving back, spotting something in the grass. In the third clip, Ozala spots something in the grass and Shufai her youngest quickly decides to climb on mum's back. They both look down into the grass. 4th and last clip, Lope sits at the hut, when he moves, something in the grass stops him in his tracks. The only thing I can think of would be insects in the grass. What do you think?

Exercise For The Twycross Gorilla Brothers
After the scary episode, earlier this week gorilla Lope and Shufai are enjoying a run around, chasing each other, they're full of energy. When they sit down, taking a rest, it's Shufai who slings the metal ring into Lope, trying to provoke him to play again. Lope dodges the ring and decides to grab a stick instead. Shufai moves away from Lope, but keeping his eyes firmly on Lope, trying to get his brother to run after him, but Lope is staying put. A little later Lope moved and Shufai is by the metal ring beating his chest at Lope. That does it, as Lope comes running/climbing after his brother. Asante sits on the log and Ozala is sitting in the back. Then Shufai has a little wrestle with Lope before the running starts again.

Gorilla at the zoo gets to celebrate his 7th birthday party
The staff prepares the room for Lope's 7th birthday. All the ribbons and signs are up with honey placed on top of the gifts. Inside the boxes there are food pellets, salads and vegetables. On the many logs, the staff spread some food that looked like an oat and a peanut butter mixture. Lope is out first of course and goes straight for that oat mixture on the log. Then he takes one of the kong toys and after running around with it, he takes it to a quiet spot up to the top bunk and enjoys the food inside.
