Syringe feeding of orphaned White Bellied Roof Rat pups, using a mixture of Fox Valley formula + Meyenberg powdered goat's milk + heavy cream and added additional vitamins and minerals. Makeup sponge applicators or precision glue applicator tips are used, because a bare syringe or dropper will cause a tiny baby to aspirate and choke, as the drops are too big. Rat and mice pups don't often fare well on normal milk replacement formulas alone, as they are not nutrient dense enough for the volume for tiny babies like these, though rats are easier to raise than mice. They do fare better on goat's milk Esbilac + heavy cream, or some report success with rat pups using soy based human infant formula, but I have never tried it. Our flightless resident pigeon, Proud Boy, often enjoys just climbing right into the water bowl and floating like a duck. 😄 He lost half of his right wing several years ago when it's suspected that he was hit by a car. A wasp visits my screen door, so I offered it some apple butter. ^_^ I think that's their favorite, because I have a pet wasp who can't fly anymore and her favorite is apple butter. I stopped trying to kill wasps years ago when I learned they're pollinators too. I have not been stung since. White Bellied Roof Rats. It doesn't take but a minute for them to notice that the lid is off the food can, and then jump in. They're just critters trying to make it in the world too. Sometimes I trap and relocate them, but I was in a hurry getting ready for the arctic front and just wanted to let them go back to whatever warm spot they knew. There will be another time to catch them. I've raised these kinds of rats from orphans, and they're very smart, loving, and tamable. Our poor little baby coachwhip snake, who was attacked by a cat several weeks ago, is still hanging in there. He suffered serious spinal trauma in the attack and though he's survived the puncture wounds, against the odds, and didn't sustain a mortal wound to a vital organ, he was left disabled with paresis. He can only move the upper 1/3rd of his body normally, and his muscle/nerve impulses are weak on the lower 2/3rd. This means he cannot move normally and without great effort. He has to inch his way forward in small increments by throwing his upper body forward, and pulling the rest. He may improve with more time to heal, but it's more likely to be permanent damage. Keep your cats INSIDE! I don't care how much they don't like it. The domesticated "house cat" is the most destructive non-native and invasive animal on the continent. Zebra mussels are not as destructive. Burmese Pythons are not as destructive. "Murder hornets" are not as destructive. European Starlings, House Sparrows, and Eurasian Collared Doves are not as destructive. In fact, all of these put together and multiplied by several factors are not as destructive to the biodiversity of wildlife on this continent, as the domesticated cat is. Found another wasp who needs rehab. Sanctuary, actually. She'll never fly again because one of her wings is damaged, likely by freezing nighttime temperatures. It's funny how they find me. I was outside caring for the other animals, and she crawled onto the feed bucket or pan. As I was picking her up to just set her aside out of danger, I noticed her damaged wing. I've rehabbed some of them, and honeybees and other insects before, and released them. Sometimes they can't be fixed, and I just care for them. I've had wasps before who lived for many months, and one who lived almost a year. Most people don't know that wasps are pollinators too, and you shouldn't kill them just because they're there. It's misunderstood that they prey on and eat only insects. The adults mostly prey on other insects to take back to the nest and feed their larvae, but the adult wasp actually prefers fruits or drinks nectar, like other pollinators. For years I have been able to handle wasps barehanded without being stung. It's surprising how little you will be stung if you aren't threatening toward them. I even recently relocated 2 wasp nests filled with wasps, that had made their nests on movable objects. I just did so slowly and quietly and didn't swat at them. No problems with them whatsoever. That's not to say they won't sting you if you inadvertently get too close and are making big movements or a lot of noise. But if you're aware they are there, and not trying to menace them you can walk right by them and not have any problems. Especially this time of year. They're just hoping to shelter some place to survive freezing weather and make it until Spring.
