🐇 Cottontail Loves Her Cereal 😊
Hasenpfeffer loves oat rings cereal. This is something I usually use as just a weaning food when babies are getting off formula, because it's easy for them to eat, but Hasenpfeffer still wants her cereal from time to time, even though she's nearly 5 years old. She will often protest and throw her bowl around until she gets it.

Littlefoot - Leopard Gecko
Littlefoot is a sweet Leopard Gecko who was surrendered to the rescue a few years ago, along with Jakey, one of our Bearded Dragons. Here he is getting a nice warm hydration bath, containing diluted liquid amino acid and electrolyte. He has been up for adoption before, but no one wanted him. Sadly, most people in search of pets are very fickle, and only are interested in having a baby animal. When it comes to reptiles, it's more difficult for the beginner to keep a baby alive, than a well established adult. Beginners should acquire experience with healthy established adults before attempting to keep younger reptiles. Generally, almost no lizard or gecko is considered a good reptile for a beginner. This rescue recommends a snake for the beginner in most cases, because snakes tend to be the most hardy and most forgiving of lax or inexperienced care givers. However, one acceptable exception is the Leopard Gecko. With proper care, Leopard Geckos are very long-lived animals for their size. It's not uncommon to hear of them living to nearly 20 years or more. In one case the father of a heartbroken young man, who had lost his long time pet, inquired whether something had been done wrong and what I thought had happened to his son's Leo Gecko when she died. I was stunned when I heard that the gecko was 27 or 28 years old, as I recall. I reassured them that the son had definitely cared for her properly, because that is the longest lived Leopard Gecko I've ever heard of. I have heard of several who lived approx. 22-23 years. 15-18 is quite typical. As I recall, I think the former owner who surrendered Littlefoot had said that she had him for 3 or so years, and that was about 3 years ago now.
He is up for adoption locally, no long distance/shipping, and adoption agreement is required.

🐕 Bitten by 🐍 Rattlesnake - Dog Reacts
Great Dane, Sampson, bitten yesterday after accosting a displaced baby Western Diamondback Rattlesnake, which possibly hitched a ride into the town proper inside a wooden prefab storage building that had been delivered 2 days before. I was running errands when called by an acquaintance who used to do rehab work, who asked me to come remove the snake. It is very unusual and almost unheard of to have a rattlesnake this far inside of town, in the neighborhoods/avenues, and not just on the periphery of the city limits. At first, I suspected there must be siblings in the area, given his age, going under the belief that he was born in the area. It was only after reviewing the video for editing that I first heard the part that she had asked if he could have hitched a ride in the new storage building that had been delivered a couple of days before. That does explain where he may have come from very well. Once I actually heard that part, I am no longer very concerned that there are more of them. It's most likely a "one off", because baby snakes in their first Winter don't yet have a hibernation den selected, and they just poke around independently and try to get lucky and make it through that first Winter when they are inexperienced. Therefore, it's most likely that he is a single if he came inside the prefab building. In 17 years that I have been here, I have never responded to a snake call that actually turned out to be a venomous native snake, this far inside of the city limits and residential neighborhoods, which are miles from the nearest typically suitable habitat for rattlesnakes. In the neighborhoods which border undeveloped land or on newly developed land, yes. But not in these neighborhoods well inside town that have been neighborhoods since the 1940s or 50s.
The decision to not give Sampson a rattlesnake antivenin under the circumstances was proper. Those antibody based therapies are expensive, and there can be more harsh adverse reactions to the antivenin than to a slight envenomation reaction from the actual snake bite. Proper protocol is to wait and see how bad the inflammation and other responses to the bite are, before administering antivenin. Sampson didn't need it. However, I do think a $400 bill during normal business hours for simple NSAID and antibiotics is completely outrageous, but they are the "proudest" (read highest) veterinary clinic in the area, from all I have ever seen. That's not the dog's owner saying this, it's 100% my own opinion. I did advise that a dose of serrapeptase proteolytic enzyme supplement to Sampson may be beneficial, as serrapeptase selectively breaks down unnatural proteins in circulation, and rattlesnake venom is largely composed of peptides (building blocks of proteins). I also give special credit to Sarah for calling me instead of killing the snake for causing her a $400 vet bill, or calling animal control on it, which would have been the same thing, because they would have killed him. Baby rattlesnake will be fed, hydrated, treated humanely, and offered an alternative hibernaculum for the Winter, far away from the city and developed neighborhoods. Being that he is first year baby, he doesn't really yet have an imprinted home range, so he should do well if placed elsewhere.

Helped another cross the road safely. F you if you don't like it. Original symbol of our nation. I literally have a "No Step on Snek" patch on my ball cap. I'm not going to regard him as a revered symbol of American liberty, and then kill him! And you're a contemptible sissy if you do.
First symbol of our nation, and should have remained so.
Published in the Pennsylvania Journal on December 27, 1775, Benjamin Franklin made some observations about the rattlesnake.
"I observed on one of the drums belonging to the marines now raising, there was painted a Rattle-Snake, with this modest motto under it, "Don't tread on me." As I know it is the custom to have some device on the arms of every country, I supposed this may have been intended for the arms of America...I sat down to guess what could have been intended by this uncommon device....having frequently seen the Rattle-Snake, I ran over in my mind every property by which she was distinguished, not only from other animals, but from those of the same genus or class of animals, endeavoring to fix some meaning to each, not wholly inconsistent with common sense. I recollected that her eye excelled in brightness, that of any other animal, and that she has no eye-lids. She may therefore be esteemed an emblem of vigilance. She never begins an attack, nor, when once engaged, ever surrenders: She is therefore an emblem of magnanimity and true courage. As if anxious to prevent all pretensions of quarreling with her, the weapons with which nature has furnished her, she conceals in the roof of her mouth, so that, to those who are unacquainted with her, she appears to be a most defenseless animal; and even when those weapons are shown and extended for her defense, they appear weak and contemptible; but their wounds however small, are decisive and fatal...she never wounds 'till she has generously given notice, even to her enemy, and cautioned him against the danger of treading on her."

Turtle Mauled by Dog Swims Again 😊 - Alternative to Calm App
Originally Uploaded March 11, 2019
Turtle moment of Zen. One of my damaged turtles returns to the water to get his sea legs again and finish his recovery outside.
I find it very calming just watching them swim around and feeding them. Kinda like that "Calm" app they advertise on TV, with the sound of rain drops. I might just do more videos like this for the same purpose. 😃

Turtle Severely Mauled by Dog - Shell Repair Rehabilitation Process
Originally Uploaded May 31, 2018
A bit long, but if you want to learn the how and why, I go into details.
Why do I disagree with the opinion of two other rehabbers and two veterinarians who said euthanize this turtle? I am always challenging the limits of what is "medically possible" and what I can do. It's the only way for any kind of science or medicine to advance. I may fail, but I put forth a fully committed attempt toward cases that others refuse to even attempt. This is why many others do not advance in their abilities, because they never push the limits once they reach an obstacle to their knowledge, which they see as the point they should euthanize and go no farther. Not because the animal is suffering any more than other cases, but because they simply have given up because they've reached the boundaries of their knowledge, and a line they've drawn on how much individual effort they're going to put into one animal.
Critical to stabilizing aquatic patients in these cases, besides controlling blood loss, is immediate prevention of dehydration and tissue desiccation through placement of ointments, hydrogels, and other barrier dressings, and promotion of granulation as fast as possible. Aquatic turtles dehydrate VERY rapidly through such wounds and though their shell wounds and other trauma may be survivable, they will often end up dying within days from simple hydration losses from soft tissues exposure to outside air. Aquatic turtles cannot survive extended periods away from water sources in normal circumstances, and this is even more so the case when their shell has been opened to the environment. Barriers are critical to saving them in the short term. Over 16 years of rehabilitation work, I've developed and found high levels of successful outcomes when using a mixture I have developed containing a combination of a primary base of SSD, hydrolysate collagen (EMT gel brand), L-Proline powder, and a small amount of Vit. E oil. Sometimes, Manuka honey is also used, if silver sulfadiazine is not available to the at home rehabber. Immediately over this well mixed preparation, petrolatum infused gauze dressings are placed, which provide additional barrier protection from hydration losses. This is then covered with additional gauze, and then often finished with a transparent barrier dressing, such as SorbaView or Tegaderm, or, alternatively, simply with gauze tape and flexible self adhesive "Coban" or "Vet wrap", with several wraps around the shell. The wound is checked and repacked/cleaned about every 3 days, or as needed, depending on the severity of the underlying soft tissue damage, and the dressings replaced.
The key to this successful rehab technique is to NOT disturb this wound bed any more than necessary during the healing process, therefore, daily dressing changes are often NOT ADVISED, nor are additional chemical antimicrobial irrigation solutions on subsequent cleanings and repacking of the wound (chlorhexidine or povidone iodine), if there is no evidence of active infection in the wound bed. Simple sterile water for irrigation or normal saline will suffice for wound cleaning later. When sufficient healing has taken place that routine cleaning and repacking is no longer necessary, but the wound should still not be allowed to contact water for reasons of water intrusion into the body, or from bacterial contamination being a concern, then a more secure and longer term hydrocolloid waterproof dressing can be applied, such as J&J Tough Pads, which can allow even a turtle with a significant shell injury to return to the water for limited periods of time, for eating and hydration purposes, as most aquatic turtles will not eat unless they are in the water at the time. Because they also eliminate wastes when they are in the water, the wound should continue to be protected from contamination until a sufficiently thick layer of soft tissue granulation is in place. However, with appropriate dressings, the turtle can return to the water for ever increaing periods of time, even well before complete healing has taken place, and the stress upon the turtle, dehydration, and weight losses from reduced food intake can be mitigated to give better chances of a successful outcome to what would normally be a mortal injury.

Aborted Turtle Release Due to Thousands of Dead Fish/Possible Toxin
Authorities are claiming it may be low oxygen levels and no algae toxin found in samples and claim that it poses no human or pet hazards. I disagree and urge caution and warn residents to keep their pets away despite what authorities are saying, because I believe a toxin was the cause here and they just haven't yet found the source or identified the right toxin. Look, low oxygen levels don't also kill SNAKES! But toxins do.

My rescue geese, Lily (Chinese goose) and Maui (Canada goose). Lily was dumped at a lake when just a juvenile and first thought to be female, but turned out to be male after growing up. I rescued him because he was all alone on Gordon Lake in Iowa Park, Tx, where scumbags of the city and state kill all the geese there from time to time. Maui's nest was abandoned by her mother, who flew away after being terrified away by fireworks that are allowed in the city of Wichita Falls, on the campus of Midwestern State University. She never came back, so I rescued her egg, incubated her, hatched her, raised her for 5 months, and then let her go. She made best friends with Lily, and Maui now lives as a wild goose.
