Easy Off Road Trails Near Big Bear California: Smarts Ranch Road 4x4 Trail
Smarts Ranch Road Trail is a very easy trail/road that runs from Highway 18 near Baldwin Lake, east of Big Bear Lake, approximately 7 miles to where it ends at Burns Canyon Road (2N02). Smarts Ranch Rd is mostly flat and easy but in the last 2 miles of the trail there are a few mildly rocky, rutted, steep spots. Any 4x4 vehicle including full sized trucks and AWD vehicles can navigate this trail. Because the road is mostly easy with only a few mildly rough sections Smarts Ranch Road is a great place for new and beginner off-roaders.

How To Program The Baofeng UV-5R To Monitor While Off-roading, Hiking, Paintball, Using The Keypad
-- This is a step-by-step guide on how to setup and configure your Baofeng UV-5R, Baofeng BF-F8HP, and any similar model Baofeng radios to monitor/listen to GMRS radios using simplex mode. A ham license is not required to listen to or transmit on GMRS frequencies, but be aware that the Baofeng UV-5R is not FCC Part 95E compliant for transmitting on GMRS or FRS frequencies so if you don't already have a radio, make sure you get one that is fully FCC "accepted" for use on GMRS channels.

Chevy Volt Off Road Recovery! Black Eagle Mine Road, Joshua Tree National Park
On Black Eagle Mine Road, approximately 7 miles from Pinto Basin Road just outside of Joshua Tree National Park we came upon this Chevy Volt that was hopelessly stuck and in need of a true offroad recovery. The Volt was blocking the road at the bottom of a small ravine so we could not get a Jeep around it, or in front of it to yank it from it's (only) proper tow-point in the front. Because the Chevy Volt has no rear axle per-se, and no tow-point in the rear, our only option for recovery was to put a recovery-strap through the rear wheels and pull it a few feet backwards. From there we were able to stack some rocks, choose a better line, and with some momentum and spotting, get it moving again.
The driver had already been there for a few hours in the 105°F temperature and was contemplating the 7 mile walk back to the nearest road. The car had damage to the front bumper, a non-plugable punctured tire sidewall, and no spare tire! After escorting the driver back to Pinto Basin Road we took them to Indio where they called a tow-truck.
