My Self Reliance

I'm really settling in to the cabin this winter and I am finally able to get some of the important projects done, especially safety issues like building the stairs and railing in the breezeway down to the root cellar. During the cold winter, I eat a lot of protein and fat so I'm constantly cooking bear and venison on the wood stove, which is stored in the solar powered freezer in the basement along with potatoes and carrots in the back portion of the cellar. I break out the power tools to install and cut material for a floor in the breezeway. The weather is switching here, and despite a lot of snow on the ground, maple sugar season may be starting. Until the master bedroom is built, I'm sleeping alone in the loft which means a lot of ladder climbing so I make it a little safer until I come up with something more permanent. Thanks for Watching! What's been a construction site for the past two years is now a home, and the addition of another bookcase/storage unit, an upper cabinet in the kitchen and drawer fronts for the lower cabinet make it feel more comfortable and finished. I also wrap the front porch columns with aluminum, a simple aesthetic feature that will be easy to adjust as the cabin settles and the post heights lower. I'm slowly eating my way through the freezer full of venison, bear and pork, cooking it in cast iron on the wood stove, which is burning 24/7 at this time of year. Soon, spring temperatures will encourage me to transfer most of my cooking to the outdoor fire pit and the summer kitchen, which I'll start building in the next couple of weeks. In preparation of moving the icebox into the breezeway, I clean it with soap and vinegar, although most of my food is stored in the root cellar at this time of year. With spring seasons approaching, I am practicing shooting my longbow daily so that when the opportunity arrives, I can fill the freezer back up with bear and turkey. Using a combination of rough cut pine, walnut and birch and tongue and groove cedar, I build a bookcase wall to separate the living room from the bathroom and an end table to support a lamp, books, card games... With cold February temperatures testing the comfort of the off grid log cabin, the wood stove proves to be up to the task of heating the space and the mass of the logs retains it well, with morning temperatures in the cabin remaining quite warm. Living in a Canadian province with over 250,000 lakes and rivers makes fish the most important and plentiful source of calories from the wild for me. A few days spent exploring and learning new lakes and rivers yields several trout and burbot and after releasing a few small fish and eating a couple lakeside, I take 7,000 calories back to the cabin to prepare into fish stock, fish soup, fried fish and smoked trout, enough calories to fuel me for 2 days of hardworking in the winter. With a break in the winter weather, I spend a few days outside milling boards and timbers for my log cabin, cutting firewood and packaging deer meat that I've been aging hanging on the cabin for a couple of weeks. With one of the 2'x12" pine boards, I make a rough wooden bench for the dining area in the cabin and I prepare for my next deer hunt. One more dry, mild day allows me to get more of the critical outdoor chores done, like milling more lumber for the interior of the cabin. Starting the day with a hot chaga/coffee on the porch is a bonus at this time of year, but dropping temperatures and an approaching snow storm will put an end to that. I insulate the ceiling and start installing charred 1" pine rough lumber, which immediately traps more of the heat from the woodstove and makes the cabin much more efficient than my last cabin.
