'The Killer' Movie Review: David Fincher's First Action Film?
With The Killer, director David Fincher's dips his toe into action filmmaking, with this a hitman thriller punctuated by a terrific fight sequence that ranks up there with Fincher's most memorable moments. While probably more of a genre exercise than his best work, Fincher is clearly operating at a high level, with this also offering star Michael Fassbender a strong comeback role.

Exorcist 2 is much worse (but more fun) than Believer
Now that David Gordon Green has sent another horror franchise to hell with THE EXORCIST: BELIEVER, the time is right this Halloween for Awfully Good Movies to tackle one of the most awfully good sequels ever made… EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC!
While the late William Friedkin and William Peter Blatty were hellbent against any follow-ups to their seminal horror classic, the suits at Warner Bros. felt otherwise and rolled camera on a follow-up four years later from another prestige filmmaker, John Boorman, despite Boorman passing on the first film and calling it a “repulsive” tale about “child abuse”. So instead, Linda Blair returns as Regan MacNeil one last time (until REPOSSESSED and EXORCIST: BELIEVER, that is) to fight the satanic demon nipping at her heels once more, thanks to a mind synchronization device that is just the tip of this sequel’s deeply insane iceberg.
Whether it’s a visibly drunk Richard Burton as the new priest sent to save Regan’s soul and clear Father Merrin’s name, Louise Fletcher slumming it after her Oscar for Nurse Ratched playing Regan’s harried psychologist in place of the absent Ellen Burstyn, or James Earl Jones wearing a locust costume atop his head, they’re all complicit in John Boorman’s craziest concoction since ZARDOZ, with the now-debunked pseudoscience of ESP (“the sixth sense”) proving central to the plot in overlong hallucination sequences and flashbacks with a begrudgingly returning Max von Sydow as the young Father Merrin. And did I forget to mention the demon’s name is Pazuzu? (Yes, I know it’s his name in the book, but still!)
It all combines to create one of the most spectacular failures in the history of sequels, with all the scares now replaced by unintentional laughs or long stretches of boredom… you know, much like EXORCIST: BELIEVER! But at least THE HERETIC has some pretty photography, a great Morricone score, and an unlikely fan in none other than Martin Scorsese. Yes, folks, Scorsese thinks that EXORCIST II is cinema, which is more than anybody can say for EXORCIST: BELIEVER.

Capricorn One: The Best Sci-Fi Thriller You Never Saw
As far as conspiracy theories go, very few have had as much of a life as the notion that NASA faked the Apollo moon landing. In some ways, one can understand why people felt this way, as it was one of the most critical events in human history, and the only witness was a TV camera. Back then, people distrusted anything they couldn't see with their own eyes. In the seventies, conspiracy theories started to get famous, especially as far as the government went, with this the era of Watergate. People no longer trusted authority, and into this fraught environment came Capricorn One, a sci-fi-tinged conspiracy thriller that was one of the most popular films of 1977 but has since been largely forgotten - save for a small cult of devoted fans.

WTF Happened to Sinbad?
If you’re a child of the nineties, chances are you grew up loving Sinbad. Also known as David Atkins, Sinbad began his comedy career as a contestant on Star Search before nabbing his breakout role on the Cosby Show spin-off, A Different World, where he played Coach Walter Oakes; he served as a mentor to the main cast, who all played students at the fictional Hillman College. His distinctive look made him instantly identifiable, and it wasn’t long before he started showing up in movies, with roles in Necessary Roughness and Coneheads.
His career was unusual because most people went to TV after their movie careers cooled down. For Sinbad, it was the opposite. His solo TV show, The Sinbad Show, was a flop, but shortly afterwards, his movie career went into high gear, with him appearing in a string of hit movies. His biggest hit was Houseguest opposite the late Phil Hartman, but he also co-starred with Arnold Schwarzenegger in Jingle All The Way and made a well-received Disney film called First Kid. And no, we did not star in Kazaam (blame the Mandela Effect for that one).
Oddly, after three successful films, Sinbad’s career cooled around 2000, and no one knows why. In this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, we dig into the inexplicable cooling of this terrific comic actor’s career, as well as shining a light on some of the health challenges he’s faced as the beloved star recovers from a debilitating stroke.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer - Not As Awful As You Remember?
The Silver Surfer hasn’t been treated well on the big screen. When 20th Century Fox announced the character would be appearing in their 2007 sequel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer well, we’d be lying if we said fans were enthusiastic given the lacklustre reaction to the first film. But, people were happy that Doug Jones would be playing the role in motion capture, even if Lawrence Fishburne doing the voice seemed like an odd mis-match. When it came out in the summer of 2007 reviews were slightly more positive than they were for this first film, but it was a box office dissapointment. Yet, we think it’s not quite as bad as people remember as we dig into in this episode of Marvel Revisited.

Top 10 Martin Scorsese Movies
Martin Scorsese is considered by many to be the greatest living director, and here at JoBlo, we’re inclined to agree. For over fifty years, Scorsese has regularly churned out masterpieces at a genuinely dizzying rate. Has he ever made a legitimately bad film? Even his failures, like 1976’s New York New York, are worth watching and occasionally brilliant. So-called lesser efforts like After Hours are actually quite brilliant upon re-examination, but the question remains - what are Martin Scorsese’s best films?
Truth be told, this is an impossible question to answer. When you’re working on the level of Scorsese, it’s hard to quantify what his best work is, as so many of his films are brilliant that a case could be made for everything from Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, The Last Temptation of Christ, Silence and beyond. Thus, we here at JoBlo are doing something a little different by presenting our ten favorite Scorsese movies. To note, Killers of the Flower Moon is not included - not because it doesn’t qualify (you can read our rave review here), but rather because Scorsese’s movies, in our opinion, need to be viewed multiple times to see how they fit in the canon.
You can watch our favourite Martin Scorsese movies via the video embedded above, but make sure to let us know in the comments if you agree or disagree with our occasionally controversial picks.

WTF Happened to Dustin Hoffman?
Of all the actors to get caught up in the #MeToo movement, perhaps one of the most surprising was Dustin Hoffman. Back in 2017, when the actor was fresh off of delivering one of his finest latter-day performances in The Meyerowitz Stories, the actor was confronted (some say ambushed) at a 20th-anniversary screening of Wag the Dog by comedian John Oliver, who questioned him about accusations of inappropriate behaviour from thirty years prior on the set of Death of a Salesman. The story went viral, and soon a story about Hoffman’s treatment of Meryl Streep on the set of Kramer vs Kramer also got renewed play, much to Streep’s dismay, who said Hoffman had apologized years earlier, and she accepted that.
In the years since, Hoffman’s career has been low-key, with him only showing up in a few indie and international films, which is a significant comedown for a man who was always considered one of the greatest actors of his generation. Indeed, his filmography is tough to match, with him acting in decades of classics, including The Graduate, Little Big Man, Straw Dogs, Marathon Man, Tootsie, Rain Man, and so many more. Should a few instances of inappropriate behaviour be enough to tarnish his legacy? We dig into his life and career in this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, written by Mathew Plale and edited, narrated and produced by Taylor James Johnson.

WTF Happened to Police Academy?
Police Academy was one of the most successful film franchises of the eighties. From 1984-1989, Warner Bros churned out an entry every year, and the movies were all decent-sized hits and giant in video rental stores the entire decade. But how did the franchise start? How did an R-rated comedy about a bunch of misfit, wannabe cops launch a family-friendly franchise? In this episode of What Happened to this Movie, we dig into how Steve Guttenberg’s Mahoney, Michael Winslow’s sound-effects spewing Jones and the rest of the misfit gang became screen icons.
Does the first Police Academy movie hold up well? Let us know in the comments.

'Killers of the Flower Moon' Movie Review
Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, despite not having even opened in theaters yet, has probably already been written about more than any other movie this year outside of the Barbenheimer phenomenon. One can understand why, as it’s the work of perhaps the greatest living director in Martin Scorsese, and is the first movie the director’s made that bring together his two favorite leading men, Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro (although the two worked together before on This Boy’s Life). Does the film live up to its iconic pairing and do justice to the true story of the Osage Native American Tribe?

WTF Happened to Bryan Singer?
Before his career came crashing down, Bryan Singer was one of the most successful directors in Hollywood. Having risen through the ranks thanks to his early indie work, Singer was one of the first big directors to emerge from the Sundance Film Festival. His first movie, Public Access, won the Grand Jury Prize, and his follow-up, The Usual Suspects, became a smash hit that made Kevin Spacey a household name. After making an underrated Stephen King adaptation, Apt Pupil, Singer directed 2000’s X-Men. This was arguably the first true Marvel superhero movie and a noted detour from how comic book movies were usually filmed because Singer took the material seriously. The follow-up, X2: X-Men United, was an even bigger smash and helped make Hugh Jackman, who was plucked from obscurity to play Wolverine, one of the biggest stars of his era.
But, behind the scenes, there was a lot of drama surrounding Singer. It began with a 1997 lawsuit where Singer while making Apt Pupil, was accused of forcing minors to shower nude for his film. The lawsuit was never major news in that era, long before #MeToo and Singer’s career continued. Still, whispers always seemed to follow him, even as he churned out Superman Returns and his massive return to the X-Men franchise, X-Men: Days of Future Past. But, in the middle of shooting his Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody (ironically his biggest hit), allegations about Singer’s conduct finally caught up with him, and he was unexpectedly fired from the film with only two weeks left to shoot (he would keep his directorial credit).
Since then, Singer has laid low, with his proposed return to directing on Millenium’s Red Sonja reboot cancelled after an outcry. In this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, we dig into the allegations against Singer and where the former A-list director is now.
Should we separate the artist and the art? Let us know in the comments!

WTF Happened to The Black Hole?
In 1977, a little movie called Star Wars came out and changed everyone’s idea of what a blockbuster could be. Overnight, science-fiction went from being a genre consigned to B-movies to A-level epics, and within a year, every studio in Hollywood was planning their own sci-fi epic. That included Walt Disney Pictures, who had infamously passed on developing Star Wars. Now, they were going to catch up with their own sci-fi epic, 1979’s The Black Hole. Sporting a hefty $20 million budget (it cost twice what Star Wars did), The Black Hole was supposed to usher Disney into a new era of movie-making, where adult audiences would be targeted just as much as kids. The movie was not the flop history remembers, but it underperformed. Yet, it was an essential part of sci-fi movie history as it used computerized camera technology to create visual effects, many of which were mind-blowing for 1979.
In this episode of WTF Happened to this Movie, we dig into how Disney made a big-budget Star Wars-style movie on their own, without using any of the effects artists from George Lucas’s ILM. We dig into the interesting cast, which included the late Robert Forster, Maximillian Shell and the voice of Planet of the Apes star Roddy McDowell as an R2-D2-style robot named V.I.N.CENT, and more. We also explain how this dark, PG-rated movie paved the way for Disney’s Touchtone Pictures, with them, at the time, wholly devoted to G-rated family fare, something that would change dramatically in the eighties. Plus, we examine the score by John Barry and the rumors that the film even get a modern remake.

Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey: Better Than Excellent Adventure?
In 1989 Orion Pictures, along with Nelson Entertainment released Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. The film was widely loved, and still is, to this day by both critics and fans alike. Because the film was so popular, spawned tons of merchandise and even had two spinoff shows…a sequel was inevitable.
This isn’t just any sequel, it’s Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey. At the time regarded as a love it or hate it film and was considered a box office failure. So let’s go to hell, visit heaven, build some evil and good robots and face off in the Battle of Bands as we check out Bill & Ted’s bonkers follow up on this episode of Revisited.

WTF Happened to That '70s Show Cast?
Hanging out down the street, you could find the cast of THAT '70S SHOW, Fox's go-to sitcom from 1998-2006. Lasting eight seasons and an even 200 episodes, THAT '70S SHOW had an ensemble that found a charismatic group of characters in the Wisconsin burbs and making the most out of that basement.
Yet, as lighthearted as the show was, some very dark business was going on behind the scenes, as co-star Danny Masterson's rape trial and conviction proved. In this episode, we dig into what's happened to the close-knit cast, many of whom came under fire for their support of Masterson throughout his trial and after his conviction, with this a tale of Scientology, wealth, power, and abuse. That said, it's not all dark, with co-stars like Topher Grace and Laura Prepon going on to long-running careers, and, despite everything, Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher have had one of the better Hollywood marriages. Yet, one can't deny the Masterson case and the icky support from many of the cast members have cast a shadow over the show's legacy, as well as Netflix's ill-timed sequel series, That '90s Show.
What do you think of the show's legacy now? Let us know in the comments!

Staying Alive: Stallone's Awfully Good Sequel to Saturday Night Fever
While Sylvester Stallone’s latest sequel Expend4bles may have been a letdown for the Italian Stallion, Awfully Good Movies is putting on a headband and spandex for John Travolta in the 1983 Stallone-directed sequel to 1977’s Saturday Night Fever: Staying Alive!
But though the Bee Gees are back to provide a few new catchy tunes, most of the soundtrack is filled with 80s synth cheese mostly performed by Sly’s musician brother/Norm MacDonald punchline Frank Stallone, with Stallone’s fake musical he wrote for the third act being the most hilariously inept stage show to hit Broadway until SPIDER-MAN: TURN OFF THE DARK would come along. Yet even without the downbeat 70s mood of Tony’s last adventure, it’s a fascinating time capsule with some fantastic dancing that stands as a monument to how big the egos of its director and star were before the darker days of Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot and Battlefield Earth. Who knew that the man we’d later know as the “Tulsa King” secretly wanted to be a Broadway queen all along?

Inception: What It's Really About
Movies are much like dreams. This, of course, is according to the visionary Oscar-nominated filmmaker, Christopher Nolan. Nolan is responsible for such cinematic treasures as The Dark Knight Trilogy, The Prestige, Interstellar, and among his most beloved, Inception. Inception is the story of a man’s desperate attempt to implant an idea into the subconscious mind of his mark. Over the years, the film has received endless amounts of analysis and theories to speculate on what the movie’s true meaning is and what it all means by the time the credits roll. Now, as is the case with all art, the movie is subjective and the Director himself has gone on record stating that he’s not interested in validating any of the existing theories floating around the internet since the film's release.
While the parallels have since been highlighted between Nolan’s filmmaking philosophy and the philosophy of dreams, to say that Inception is nothing but a metaphor for making art- I think there’s some details hidden within the film and its production that suggest something much simpler and perhaps even more meaningful.
See, Nolan has gone down as saying “I actually don’t want people to have me in mind when they’re watching the films.” and is notably private about his personal life with his wife, Emma Thomas, and their children. Nolan is a family man. But he’s also a filmmaker with a story to tell. Cobb in Inception is a man out of reality who specializes in building dream worlds in order to extract secrets from his mark’s brains. Basically, he’s a heist artist- but his jobs take place within others’ minds.
In the film, Cobb is desperate to complete one last job in order to allow himself to retire and return home to his two young children. Cobb is haunted by the dedication he’s had to his work and how it not only pulled him away from his family- but even caused the untimely death of his own wife, Mal. His obsession with following his dreams and making his passion into a demanding job definitely seems to be similar to Nolan’s life and career as a director of film.
Now, in today’s episode we are going to break down the story and its themes to formulate our own theory on what Inception is REALLY about- but in order for us to truly know- we watched Inception back-to-back with another Nolan favorite, The Prestige. The Prestige is a film about two rival magicians who drive themselves to any length in order to discover each other's secrets. The film helped us see Inception with fresh eyes and come up with our theory on what Inception is REALLY about. Find out what we have in store in today’s episode!

WTF Happened to Vanilla Ice?
Ice Ice Baby. Go Ninja Go Ninja Go. If there was a guy everywhere in 1990 and 1991, it was Vanilla Ice. A white rapper from Dallas, Texas - whose real name is Rob Van Winkle, the much-mocked but extremely popular rapper scored a multi-platinum debut with his album To The Extreme, which sold seven million copies and, at the time, was the fastest-selling hip-hop album of all time. His signature track, Ice Ice Baby, which sampled Queen’s Under Pressure, was the highest charting rap single ever, as was his cover of Play That Funky Music. Vanilla Ice was so popular among teens that he showed up as himself in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: The Secret of the Ooze, where he sang “Ninja Rap” (Go Ninja Go). But, just as quickly as he rose, Vanilla Ice fell, with his acting debut, Cool As Ice, widely mocked as one of the worst films of all time when it came out in 1991, just after his career had peaked. By the year’s end, he was a has-been. So, how does someone rise and fall so quickly? In this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, we dig into Vanilla Ice’s epic rise and fall, paying tribute to the fact that despite his short-lived fame, he stuck around much longer in the public consciousness than a lot of his contemporaries, thanks to his constant willingness to poke fun at himself, and his reputation for being a nice guy. So “stop, collaborate and listen” to this special episode, written by Brad Hamerly, and edited, produced and narrated by Taylor James Johnson.

WTF Happened to Fast Times at Ridgemont High?
Fast Times at Ridgemont High is one of the most influential movies of the eighties. It was the first classic teen comedy of the decade, but unlike many other teen-focused flicks, it aspired to be a realistic depiction of what teens go through. In fact, the movie was based on a book by a young Cameron Crowe (who adapted the screenplay) who went undercover as a teen and wrote about his experiences. The movie tackled teen sex, pregnancy, abortion and drugs without any of the doom and gloom the topic would have been presented with had it been made by just about anyone else at the time.
Directed by Amy Heckerling, the movie featured an incredible cast of future stars, including Sean Penn as the stoner icon Spicoli, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Judge Reinhold, Phoebe Cates (whose nude scene became one of the most rewound moments of the VHS era), Forest Whitaker, Eric Stoltz, Nicolas Cage, Anthony Edwards and more. But, perhaps even more influential was the soundtrack, which highlighted new wave bands like The Go-Go’s, The Cars, Billy Squier and Oingo Boingo, plus California rock bangers by Jackson Browne and all of the former members of The Eagles (whose manager produced the film). The movie was a decent-sized hit but not the blockbuster some remember it as. It was on TV and home video that the movie became iconic, and in this episode of WTF Happened to this Movie, we dig into how Fast Times at Ridgemont High got made and how it nearly got shelved after initially being slapped with an X-rating. Can you imagine how different teen movies of the eighties might have been had Fast Times but cut to the bone and released as a TV movie? Do you think Fast Times holds up over 40 years later? What Happened to Chris O'Donnell?
In the 90s, Chris O’Donnell was one of Hollywood’s most prominent young heartthrobs. Whether it was acting opposite Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman or playing a young D’Artagnan in the Disney version of The Three Musketeers, it can’t be denied that the movie that put his career into overdrive was Batman Forever. In it, O’Donnell reinvented the role of Batman’s ward and sidekick, Robin, for the nineties, with him an acrobatic badass that proved so popular that the next movie was Batman and Robin. And there is where things started to change, with Joel Schumacher’s sequel ridiculed. Even still, O’Donnell made a few good movies after, including the underrated rom-com The Bachelor and the terrific Martin Campbell action movie Vertical Limit. However, his career never regained the momentum it had in the nineties. Yet, despite everything, he later went onto a long run on NCIS: Los Angeles, so while his feature film career cratered, his career on the small screen flourished. In this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, we look at his career ups and downs and appreciate one of the more underrated actors of his era.
What’s your favorite Chris O’Donnell movie? Let us know in the comments.

WTF Happened to Highlander?
When someone says "There can be only one" what immediately pops into your head? For just about everyone it will be the movie Highlander, starring Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery, Clancy Brown and directed by Russell Mulcahy . Yep, the first film died at the box office and seemed destined to fall into obscurity. But just like the immortals in the film, it would rise from the dead and live on. The path to the first film wasn't without its own pitfalls and near-death experiences. Let's find out what happened to the 1986 film Highlander here on WTF Happened To This Movie. This episode is written by Bryan Wolford, edited by Juan Jiminez and voiced by Dave Davis.

Christopher Lambert's Fortress is the Best Sci-Fi Movie You Never Saw
Stuart Gordon's 1992 film Fortress is a movie that almost went direct to video in North America, but was a serious blockbuster overseas. Such was the status of star Christopher Lambert's career at the time. Back in the late-eighties/the early nineties, Christopher Lambert occupied an interesting place in the pantheon of action heroes. Theatrically, his movies never did particularly well in North America, with even the original HIGHLANDER only grossing $5.9 million domestically. Yet, he had a real following in the home video market thanks to those early films, in addition to legitimate stardom in Europe. Thus, you got movies like GUNMEN, and KNIGHT MOVES, which only got limited theatrical releases, but did well overseas and very well in video stores. Fortress is one of his very best movies and are latest entry into the Best Movie You Never Saw canon.
