Ft. Zumwalt School Bus Driver Forced To Resign For Protecting Children In Extreme Heat
Bus driver Melissa Hewitt had concerns about the dangerous heat and the mask mandate imposed on her and her students this week in the Fort Zumwalt School District. Wanting to notify parents of her safety concerns with the heat, Melissa posted a photo online that showed the interior of the non air-conditioned bus had reached a temperature of 105.9. She recognized that the children on her bus were in danger of over heating or becoming ill due to this dangerous temperature coupled with the district mask mandate on the bus. Worried about their safety, Melissa decided to tell the students they could remove their masks if they felt sick or over heated. Melissa was notified shortly after the events of the week that her district was considering her termination, or she could resign. As a bus driver going on her 3rd year, Melissa now faces unemployment.
Melissa advocated for these children. She recognized that their immediate health and safety were at risk and she acted in their best interest. Please consider donating to this hero bus driver for doing the right thing for our children.
