For years Tom Padgett has claimed that Scientology was somehow involved in his acrimonious court case. In fact, his divorce and child support cases were begun and vastly protracted solely by his own behavior. For years (until the week of Aug 11, 2003) he solicited money from Scientology critics on his website -- money which could better go to true victims of Scientology harassment. Beginning in 1992 and continuing to this day, Tom Padgett has been involved in a protracted and bitter divorce, child custody, child support and related case. His explanation for this bizarre series of events is that Scientology was involved, because Scientology is known for abrasive litigation against many people. It's true that Scientology litigates in a very nasty manner, but it's false that they had anything to do with Tom Padgett's divorce and child support cases. The fact is that Tom Padgett's behavior was responsible for initiating the case, protracting it -- and eventually landing him in jail. Padgett hadn't been living with his wife and kids for a year before the divorce was filed -- he was in Michigan while his family was in Kentucky. While visiting from Kentucky, Padgett's wife Laura found notes between Tom Padgett and his lover in Michigan, proving he was having an affair. Weeks after his wife filed for divorce in July 1992 in Madisonville, Kentucky, Tom Padgett filed for divorce in Lexington. This is merely the first of many actions by him that needlessly complicated and extended the case. Using court documents from Madisonville, Kentucky and using Padgett's own words, this site will establish how he has misrepresented his case, disparaged his wife, engaged in abrasive litigation, withheld money from his children, and outright lied about his history in order to gain support and money from critics of Scientology. The cases are indeed bizarre: And it's all Tom Padgett's doing. Even worse, his children suffered when he was so dilatory with his support payments that he eventually pled guilty to flagrant non-support -- a felony in Kentucky and the very definition of a deadbeat dad. The death of a Navy chief petty officer whose body was discovered in her Florida home in September has been ruled a homicide, leading authorities Friday to arrest the man to whom she was engaged, reports said. Nearly three months after Andrea Washington, 37, was discovered dead in her home on Jacksonville’s Northside, police charged 36-year-old Danny Ray Beard with her murder, First Coast News reported. Daniel Eric Markel was murdered in Tallahassee, Florida, in 2014. Investigators believe that he was killed as part of a murder for hire motivated by Markel's divorce from Wendi Adelson, a clinical law professor and child advocate also employed at Florida State University. Adelson was not charged,while her brother and mother were named as "unindicted conspirators." Three individuals have been prosecuted for the killing: Luis Rivera pled guilty to murder, Sigfredo Garcia was found guilty of first-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison, and Katherine Magbanua awaits retrial on murder charges following a mistrial in her original case. Markel was shot at his home in Tallahassee, Florida, shortly before 11 a.m. on July 18, 2014, and died early the next day. He was talking on the phone as he pulled into his garage, and said that he saw someone in his driveway. The Tallahassee Police Department announced that Markel was the "intended victim" and termed his death a murder. On August 1, 2014, the Associated Press reported that emergency medical response was delayed because a dispatcher erroneously classified the call as less serious than it was. A highly regarded and popular professor, Markel was the subject of many tributes from the academic community. The day after his death, a memorial service was held at the synagogue he had attended, Congregation Shomrei Torah, in Tallahassee. Markel is buried in Pardes Shalom Cemetery in Maple, Ontario. A $25,000 CrimeStoppers reward was initially offered. A separate, independently funded $100,000 award was offered in July 2015. At that time, the one-year anniversary of the murder, the Tallahassee Police Department called a press conference and showed photographs of a silver pine mica Toyota Prius, asking the public for help in locating the vehicle. The police also released un-redacted police reports from the crime scene in February 2016, but these contained no new information regarding the crime, only the names of police officers who visited the crime scene. A Columbus woman has accused a longtime local minister of years of sexual abuse that started in 2002 when she was 15, according to a lawsuit filed in Muscogee County Superior Court last month. The civil suit was filed against Pastor Lewis Clemons, Church of God in Christ Inc., Wynnton Road Ministries Church of God in Christ, Inc., and five other parties that were not named. Clemons is currently senior pastor at Kingdom Awareness Ministries, where his title is apostle. Lequita Jackson, who started attending Clemons’ church when she was 14 and did not leave it until last month, alleges that Clemons led her into “inappropriate sexual contact.” She said Clemons used his position of leadership in the church to make her “do what he wanted and to justify his actions.” Jackson, her husband of five years Jonathan Jackson, her attorney Jeb Butler of the Atlanta firm Butler/Tobin and Maria Herlth of the Columbus Sexual Assault Support Center sat down for an interview with the Ledger-Enquirer Wednesday morning to discuss the lawsuit and allegations. Jackson, now in her 30s, and her husband attended Kingdom Awareness Ministries until last month when they left the church. In addition to being members and having met at the church, they both held volunteer ministry positions in the church, they said. Jackson said one of the reasons she is coming forward now is that she recently learned “about seven other women” were in relationships with Clemons. “When I found out there were other victims — all that time I thought I was the only victim and it was an isolated occurrence — I wanted to do what I could to stop him,” Jackson said. “Part of that included speaking out about what had happened to me and making sure that other people knew what he had done and to make it public knowledge.” Her attorney said he applauded Jackson for stepping forward. “Clemons has taken something that can never be given back,” Butler said. “But when Lequita found out this had happened to others in her church, she was courageous enough to ask, and I am honored enough to help her in her goal to make sure this never happens ever again.” There is a reason the suit was filed in Superior Court and not State Court, Butler said. “We seek an order from the court barring Clemons from ever being a pastor or church official again,” Butler said. The suit claims, “Clemon’s long-term pattern of abuse, spanning many years and many victims, shows as long as he is able to remain a pastor or church leader, he will sexually abuse those who accept him as a religious leader.” The inappropriate sexual contact started at Faith Unlimited Ministries, a church Clemons led on Floyd Road in Columbus, according to the suit. At 14, the suit claims, Jackson began having “sexual contact” with the music director at Faith Unlimited Ministries. That music director is not named in the lawsuit. Jackson sought help from Clemons to end the sexual contact, according to the suit. In Wednesday’s interview, Jackson said criminal charges were filed in 2002 against the music director, but the case was not prosecuted when she “recanted” her story. Clemons then began to have “inappropriate sexual contact” with her, Jackson’s suit claims. “Defendant Clemons subjected Plaintiff to a practice that he called ‘body anointing’ in which he took off Plaintiff’s clothes and rubbed her body with oil,” according to the suit. “… Defendant Clemons told the Plaintiff his actions were authorized by the Bible.” The suit alleges that the victim and Clemons had sexual intercourse. The sexual relationship with Clemons continued from 2002 to about 2009, Jackson said. Jackson said she did not tell anyone at the church of the relationship with Clemons. The plaintiff, Lequita Jackson, accuses the pastor of child molestation, sexual battery, and even rape. It’s a position neither Jackson, 30, nor another alleged victim, Lakisha Smith, expected to be in. “He was a child molester,” Jackson said. “He was a sexual predator who needed to be stopped. I just kind of accepted it at that age. That was what would help me come to terms with what was happening.” Jackson claims what started as simple talks in the car when she was 15 escalated in to kisses, caresses and even sexual intercourse. Jackson adds the pastor would perform what he called “body anointings,” rubbing oil all over her body. Jackson says Clemons impregnated her twice, posed as her guardian, and paid for two abortions. According to her revelation, Apostle Clemons would cite and use scriptures in the Bible to justify these alleged acts. “He misinterpreted what God originally put into the scriptures to use it to his benefit.,” Jackson said. Indian American Wesley Mathews, who is facing the death penalty for killing his adopted three-year-old daughter Sherin Mathews, used a deadly weapon to commit the crime, according to his Jan. 12 indictment. Mathews’ indictment was found by India-West on the Dallas County, Texas court Web site. The brief indictment notes the findings of a Grand Jury, which state: “During the commission of the offense, defendant did use a deadly weapon, the exact nature and description of which is not known to the Grand Jury.” The indictment also states that Mathews “did intentionally and knowingly cause the death of Sherin Mathews” on or around Oct. 7, 2017, in a manner and means unknown to the Grand Jury. On Jan. 12, Mathews was charged with capital murder, a first degree felony, by the Dallas County District Attorney’s office. The punishment for first degree murder in Texas ranges from a life sentence to the death penalty. Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson said in a press release announcing the charges that her office has not yet made a determination as to whether it will seek the death penalty. Texas leads the nation for the number of deaths by execution: 474 since 1976, according to data from the Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty. Dallas County alone has had 57 executions. Mathews is the second Indian American to face the death penalty. Pennsylvania’s Raghunandan Yandamuri – convicted of killing a grandmother and her 10-month old grand-daughter – is scheduled to be executed Feb. 23. The Grand Jury also indicted Mathews on one count of injury to a child, also a first-degree felony, with a sentence ranging from five years to 99 years in state prison, along with a $10,000 fine. Mathews was also charged with two second degree felonies, including abandoning a child and tampering with evidence. Each charge carries a sentence of two to 20 years in prison. Sini Mathews, Sherin’s mother, was charged with one count of abandoning a child, a second-degree felony carrying a sentence of two to 20 years. Her attorney Mich Nolte told reporters – after Johnson read the charges at a press briefing – that there was nothing in the indictment to state that Sini Mathews was involved in her daughter’s murder. Sini Mathews received the abandonment charge because – according to police reports – she and Wesley and their biological daughter went out to dinner the night before Sherin went missing, leaving the little girl at home alone in the kitchen for at least 90 minutes. Police have questioned Wesley Mathews as to whether the young girl, adopted in 2016 from an orphanage in Nalanda, Bihar, was alive when the family returned from dinner. Wesley has said she was. When Sherin went missing early morning Oct. 7, Wesley Mathews told police he had put the little girl outside their Richardson, Texas home at 3 a.m. in the morning, as a punishment for not drinking her milk. Following an intensive search by Richardson police and the community, Sherin Mathews body was found in a culvert Oct. 26, a short distance from the home. Turning himself in to law enforcement a day later, Wesley Mathews said he had tried to “physically assist” his daughter in drinking her milk, and then watched her choke. He said he placed her dead body outside the home. An autopsy report released by the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s office Jan. 3 concluded that Sherin Mathews had died of “homicidal violence.” The autopsy report states that the little girl’s body was too badly decomposed to determine more about her death (see earlier India-West story here). "We do want to make certain justice is done on behalf of this little three-year-old,” Johnson told reporters at a press briefing, adding, “We will be seeking justice on her behalf.” She added, "We are going to be the voice for her in this offense, and do all we can to make sure the fair and just thing is done,” noting that the case was still being investigated. “Sadly, Sherin appears to be one of the many abused and neglected children in Texas,” said Johnson. Joseph Michael Arpaio is an American former law enforcement officer and politician. He served as the 36th Sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona for 24 years, from 1993 to 2017, losing reelection to Democrat Paul Penzone in 2016. Starting in 2005, Arpaio took an outspoken stance against illegal immigration, styling himself as "America's Toughest Sheriff". In 2010, he became a flashpoint for opposition to Arizona's SB1070 anti-illegal immigrant law, which was largely struck down by the Supreme Court of the United States. Arpaio is also known for investigating former U.S. President Barack Obama's birth certificate, and, as of 2018, he continued to claim without evidence that it was forged. Arpaio has been accused of numerous types of police misconduct, including abuse of power, misuse of funds, failure to investigate sex crimes, criminal negligence, abuse of suspects in custody, improper clearance of cases, unlawful enforcement of immigration laws, and election law violations. A Federal court monitor was appointed to oversee his office's operations because of complaints of racial profiling. The U.S. Department of Justice concluded that Arpaio oversaw the worst pattern of racial profiling in U.S. history, and subsequently filed suit against him for unlawful discriminatory police conduct. Arpaio and the MCSO were named as defendants in dozens of civil lawsuits brought by citizens arrested by Arpaio and his deputies alleging wrongful arrest, wrongful death, entrapment and other claims, costing taxpayers in Maricopa County over $140 million in litigation against Arpaio during his tenure as sheriff. CARROLL, IOWA - For nearly two hours Wednesday, Michael Swanson's mother sobbed as she told a jury about 18 years of near-misses with a son who from the very beginning was never like other kids. They knew something was wrong early on, Kathleen Swanson testified. From birth, the boy never slept and never stopped moving. She had to quit her St. Louis Park day-care business after she found Michael, still a toddler, preparing to jump on top of an infant lying on the floor. He was only 11 when a psychiatrist told her that he was a lost cause and needed to be locked up. His grandmother, his aunt, even his own mother feared he was going to hurt them -- and he usually admitted thinking about it, she said. But always, it seemed, Swanson was caught before someone got hurt. Until Nov. 15, 2010. "It all changed when I woke up that Monday," she testified, her shoulders heaving as she described the morning she awoke to discover her Jeep, her debit cards and her very troubled 17-year-old son all missing. Cooper Harris was a 22-month-old toddler who died of hyperthermia on June 18, 2014, in Vinings, Georgia, after being left strapped in the rear-facing car seat of his father's SUV. Though he has maintained that the death was a tragic accident, Harris's father Justin Ross Harris was arrested and charged with his son's murder. The man, who worked as a therapist for a counselling agency for vulnerable youngsters, including victims of sexual abuse, in Hackney, East London, later claimed the chats were part of research for his job. Last Wednesday, at Southwark Crown Court, he was handed a 36-month supervision order after a jury convicted him last month of attempting to cause or incite a child to engage in sexual activity. Judge Nicholas Loraine-Smith told him to attend a community sex offenders' treatment programme, placed him on the sex offenders' register for five years and imposed a sexual offences prevention order limiting his contact with children. Christian Fernandez, the 13-year-old Florida boy who is charged as an adult with first-degree murder in the 2011 beating death of his 2-year-old half-brother and the sexual abuse of his 5-year-old half-brother, has had a life marked by violence and neglect. When he was just two-years-old, Fernandez was found naked and dirty, wandering a South Florida street. The grandmother taking care of him was holed up with cocaine in a motel room, while his 14-year-old mother was nowhere to be found. His very conception resulted in a sexual assault conviction against his father, and Fernandez' life got worse from there. He was sexually assaulted by a cousin and beaten by his stepfather, who committed suicide before police investigating the beating arrived. The boy learned to squelch his feelings, once telling a counselor: "You got to suck up feelings and get over it." Now 13, Fernandez is accused of murder and sexual abuse. He's been charged as an adult and is the youngest inmate awaiting trial in Duval County. If convicted of first-degree murder, Fernandez could face a life sentence, but there are complications. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled this summer that it is unconstitutional for juvenile offenders to get mandatory life sentences without parole. Because of that, Fernandez' defense attorneys said they can't advise their client what kind of sentence he could face. Robert Alan Durst was an American real estate heir. The eldest son of New York City real estate magnate Seymour Durst, he gained attention as a suspect in the unsolved 1982 disappearance of his first wife Kathleen McCormack, the 2000 murder of his long-time friend Susan Berman, and the 2001 killing of his neighbor Morris Black. Acquitted of murdering Black in 2003, Durst did not face significant further legal action until his participation in the 2015 documentary miniseries The Jinx led to him being charged with Berman's murder. Durst was convicted of the murder in 2021 and sentenced to life in prison without parole. An East Hills woman has been sentenced after her 18-month-old child died from drinking a fentanyl-filled sippy cup. Jhenea Pratt was found guilty in June of involuntary manslaughter in the death of her daughter. Prosecutors say her daughter, Charlotte Napper-Talley, died after drinking from a sippy cup that had fentanyl in it. Pratt will spend up to 10 years in prison. Authorities say that Pratt called 911 on April 5 of last year after finding her daughter unresponsive. Officers performed CPR and the little girl was rushed to Children's Hospital, where she died. Police say that the amount of fentanyl in the daughter's system was enough to kill a large animal. Pratt told authorities that she did not know how the drug got into the sippy cup. James City County, Va. - Two of the three people accused of killing a Williamsburg women in July of 2013 pleaded guilty to first degree murder as part of a plea deal in Williamsburg-James City County Circuit Court on Monday. Dana Patterson Mackay, age 42, was found dead by a neighbor inside her Teal Way home on July 27, 2013. She had suffered multiple stab wounds to the face and a finger had been cut off.
