Rick Santelli on Taxing Unrealized Profits: ‘Bank Robbers Rob Banks Because That’s Where the Money Is’
SANTELLI: “In terms all of these things we’re learning about taxing and taxing unrealized profits, I will tell you this. Bank robbers rob banks because that’s where the money is. It’s a fait accompli. We’re now so far in the hole, almost $2 trillion this year, if you look at all the numbers, they have to find money somewhere. Discretionary spending, that slice of the pie is so small, you need a microscope to see it. You can’t cut your way to prosperity there. So they have to get the money from somewhere. I look at all the piles of money that they’re probably considering. Just think about if you’re a baby boomer. You know, they have an audit trail of your retirement money that’s a mile long. There’s some money they’ll try to get their hands on as well. Spending by the government over what they take in is a tax. It’s already a tax! So I don’t know how we’re going to pay for any of this stuff. But to think that we could push off the government trying to get more money from us, that’s a lost cause already. They’ve already spent into that dimension. Back to you, Joe.”

Trump: ‘I Would Be Very Honored’ If RFK Jr. Endorsed Me
EARHARDT: “Mr. President, yesterday there was a big announcement or big rumors spreading that RFK Jr. Might be dropping out, might be endorsing you. His spokesperson said they will give a live address tomorrow about his path forward, and now there are rumors that he might join you at this rally in Arizona tomorrow to announce that he is supporting you. What’s the truth? Have you talked to him?”
Trump: “So, I’ve known him for a long time. He’s a — as you know, he is a little different kind of a guy. Very smart guy. He is a very good person. If he endorsed me, I would be honored by it. I would be very honored by it. He really has his heart in the right place. He is a respected person. Women love some of his policies, and I guess some people don’t like some of his policies. But overall, I thought the Democrats — he was a Democrat, I don’t know what he is right now, but he was a Democrat — they treated him very badly. I think he would have — you know, he goes around saying he would have beaten Biden in the primary. I think there was a good chance. What they did to him was what they did to Biden. They really were harsh and threw him out. They wouldn’t let him go to the vote — I mean, they made it impossible for him to compete in primaries because he was doing so well. And they basically made it impossible for him to do what I think he would have been success — I think he would have overthrown Biden, because Biden is so bad as a president. When I hear this talk about Mount Rushmore, I turn off the television. If I have to read an article, I just throw it down. Mount Rushmore for this man, who is the worst president in our history? He has allowed, and she has because she was the border czar, now she — you know, she disowns that. She’s allowed millions of people to come into our, many of these people totally unchecked, totally unvetted. Many of these people came into our country, think of this, from prisons and jails, from mental institutions and insane asylums. And, Brian, there is many terrorists coming in. Many, many terrorists.”

MSNBC Panel: ‘Fascinating’ to Watch Men of the Dem Party Model the 21st Century Masculinity
WAGNER: “ — trying to own masculinity in the most regressive, sort of misogynist way possible, JD Vance lecturing everybody on, you know, what a family means, what it means to be man, Donald Trump obviously has his own version of manhood, to see Tim Walz out there as a man who is just joyfully embracing his role as a potential vice president to the nation’s first female president is an extraordinary thing. But also to see his son weeping for his father in a deeply tender and emotional way. And the last thing I will say, to see Democrats champion men as voices on reproductive choice, as you saw yesterday, I believe, from Amanda Zurawski’s husband, to tonight from Tim Walz talking about struggles with infertility, it takes two partners to get pregnant. And for way too long, this conversation has been relegated to women or the carriers of pregnancies. And it is, I think, way overdue to have men express, not only their stake in all this, but also their anguish. And to have a football coach talk about the anguish of infertility, I think opens up a whole new conversation about the stakes at hand for 2024.”
Reid: “And by the way, I love that you’re saying that because this is about modern masculinity. In the Democratic Party, the coach that is saying it’s important for him as a football coach to be the faculty partner for the LGBTQ club — “
WAGNER: “The gay-straight alliance.”
Reid: “ — the gay-straight alliance, he’s like, ‘That’s something important for me to do because if a coach is doing it, it will have just a little more salience and it will help kids not get bullied.’ I mean, what’s really been fascinating is to watch the men of the Democratic Party model a kind of masculinity that is certainly 21st century masculinity.”
WAGNER: “Speaking of 21st century masculinity — “
(Laughter)
Reid: “How about that as a setup?”
WAGNER: “How about that? We’ve got Senator Cory Booker, the 21st century man himself. Senator Booker, tonight was your night as chairing the event. We’re talking about this kind of redefinition of masculinity in the wake of the Republican National Convention that offered a very reductive vision to the country. What did you make of Coach Walz tonight?”
BOOKER: “You know, there’s a deep decency and kindness about him. And I said this to somebody, it actually is the perfect handoff because the Joe Biden I got to know during the 2020 presidential campaigns, I always say, ‘When somebody’s nice to you, but they’re nice to the waiter, they’re not a nice person.’”

Jennings: Dems Have Mostly Controlled America for 12 of the Last 16 Years But Somehow It’s Still All Trump’s Fault
COOPER: “Scott?”
JENNINGS: “Well, first of all, I think the Democrats should be congratulated for this night. It was well-produced, the music, the Obamas, the whole thing worked for them tonight. I think the contrast that I see, and I don‘t know which is going to win, but we‘re seeing the contrast of the politics of combat versus the politics of compassion. That‘s what the Obamas were trying to set up tonight, in my judgment. I should warn my fellow Republicans that we heard two of the greatest political communicators in the country tonight. Now, we had Hulkamania. The Democrats have Obamamania. They ripped the roof off of this place tonight. These Democrats are fired up. They‘re not playing, okay? Yes, they say things that are exaggerations. They do say things about Trump and the Republicans that are outright lies. But the convention is working for Harris, at least as of today. The gap that I still see in all these speeches, as good as they were, is that she‘s in the White House right now. Democrats have controlled the White House for 12 of the last 16 years, and for all of the talk about division and the problems in the country and people are hurting, Democrats have mostly controlled this country. Trump had it for four, the Obamas and Biden had it for the rest of the time, and somehow it‘s still all Trump‘s fault and somehow she hasn‘t been at the center of it. So, to me, that‘s still the glaring hole in this campaign that hasn‘t yet been solved at the convention. How do you explain all of the problems that will be solved by the person who is currently in there for the last three-and-a-half years, who is supposed to already be working on solving it? But bottom line tonight, this convention is working for them. Michelle Obama is — I mean, she‘s an incredible speaker and you cannot deny the power of what happened in the hall tonight.”

CNN: U.S. Added 818,000 Fewer Jobs than Previously Reported from March 2023 to March 2024
ACOSTA: “Some breaking news into CNN right now. The job growth has been far weaker in the U.S. than originally reported — that is according to the new data just coming in this morning. Let‘s get right to CNN‘s Matt Egan. What‘s the headline, Matt?”
EGAN: “Jim, 818,000 fewer jobs were added during the period between April 2023 and March of this year. We were bracing for these revisions to come out and show that job growth was weaker, and that is what we got. This is probably on the high end of the expectations. Some of the forecasters had been saying probably around few hundred thousand jobs. Goldman Sachs had said maybe up to a million. So, this is on the higher end. We‘re seeing some of the biggest revisions downward in sectors that include manufacturing, leisure and hospitality, professional and business services. Of course, some sectors actually added more jobs than were previously known: private education, health services, transportation and warehousing. We look at the market, not a massive reaction from the market. I think that‘s in part because this is somewhat backwards-looking data. What investors really care about is what happens next. And these numbers out today, they do support the idea that the jobs market has been weaker than we previously thought and that it has been slowing down. That makes sense because we know the Fed has been working hard to slow the economy down as it tries to fight inflation. So, I do think that the fact that the economy had more than 800,000 fewer jobs than previously known supports the idea that the Fed is going to start cutting interest rates next month. The question still remains whether or not it‘s a quarter of a point or a larger interest rate cut, but either way, it‘s going to lower mortgage rates, credit card rates, and car loan rates. Jim?”
ACOSTA: “Yeah, all these data points are very important and you have to think it’s all being taken into consideration for that critical decision that’s coming from the Fed. Matt Egan, thank you very much. Really appreciate it.”

Rep. Jim Clyburn Compares Joe Biden to Martin Luther King Jr.
LEMIRE: “On that, Donald Trump is going low day after day, and we’re seeing race play a big part of his attack line now against the vice president, questioning whether she is even black, suggesting that she just changed identities recently for political opportunism. Talk to us, if you will, how you see race playing a role in this campaign. We know Donald Trump previously had been trying to win over black voters. President Biden has been struggling a little bit with that group. Polls suggest the vice president is doing better. Where do you see things landing?”
Clyburn: “Well, you know, I think we make a mistake when we deny that race is an issue in this country. The country has been around now — in two years we’re gonna celebrate 250 years of our existence. Of course, we do know that in 1876, in the 100th year of the country’s finding, we had the most racialized election we ever had that led to Jim Crow, which stayed with us for another almost 100 years. So that’s an issue that we have to confront. We shouldn’t avoid it. I often reflect on Alexis de Tocqueville’s notion that we repair our faults and that’s what makes us great, not that we are more enlightened than any other nation, but because we’re always able to repair our faults. That’s what the Supreme Court was doing in 1954. That’s what the Congress was doing in 1964 with the Civil Rights Act, and that’s what we’re attempting to do now. Covid-19 opened up some fault lines in this country, and we are about repairing them. That’s what Joe Biden did. And I think that people are going to look at Joe Biden much the way we look at Martin Luther King, jr. When he said in his speech, ‘It does not matter how long you live, but how well you live.’ And I say the same thing about Joe Biden. He may not have had as long a presidency as he wanted to have, but I don’t think you’ll have any better of a presidency than he has had. That’s what we’ve got to get out to the American people. And I think Kamala Harris is going to build upon that. She was a part of that foundation. I mentioned earlier, when she got down to Memphis in her response to Dobbs, people don’t remember that when we got into a little bit of difficulty with France over that submarine deal, Joe Biden sent Kamala Harris to Paris and she came back with a great victory. That should tell the American people a whole lot about who she is, not just on the domestic front, but on the international front as well.”

‘A Rare One-on-One’: Trump Speaks with CNN After Michigan Campaign Event
TAPPER: “And we’re back here live in Chicago as Democrats get set for night two of their convention. The Trump-Vance campaign continues its GOP counter-programming push. Moments ago, former President Donald Trump wrapping up a campaign event in battleground Michigan. And after it, he spoke with CNN’s Kristen Holmes. Kristen, this is a rare one-on-one. I don’t know the last time he did a one-on-one with CNN. What did he have to say?”
HOLMES: “Well, one of the things that he talked about was your exclusive reporting, Jake, talking about John Kelly pushing back on Donald Trump’s remarks, which obviously rubbed a lot of veterans the wrong way, when he essentially said that a civilian honor was the same as receiving the Medal of Freedom, something — the Medal of Honor. That was something that John Kelly had pushed back on saying not even close. When I asked Donald Trump about it, here’s what he said.”
[Clip starts]
Trump: “John Kelly has an axe to grind, and he made up a story. Nobody would say what he said. I would be the last person to say — he’s a liar. He’s been a proven liar. He’s lied on other occasions. I didn’t respect him. Once I lost my respect for him because I saw that he couldn’t do the job, I fired him. And when you fire people, they tend to say negative things.”
[Clip ends]
HOLMES: “Now, of course, just to remind everyone, John Kelly was his longest serving chief of staff. He is a retired Marine, and he was Donald Trump’s chief of staff while he was in the White House. The two had a very close working relationship. But obviously, these comments from Kelly, repeated comments from Kelly have gotten underneath Donald Trump’s skin. Now, in addition to that, I asked Donald Trump about the new reporting that RFK might be considering endorsing him, and would that mean that RFK might get a role in the administration, and Trump said that he would look into it, that it was something that he would consider, putting RFK in that role. When I asked about any kind of pushback, since he’s had so many progressive ideas, RFK, he said, well, Republicans like me, and I want smart people in the White House. Now, reminder, Jake, yesterday he said he would also consider putting Elon Musk into the administration. So, something that would likely not go over well with Republicans. But it was interesting to see him in this room today, not just for our one-on-one, but really trying to talk to the crowd here. He was clearly trying to stay on message, as we have seen over and over again, him kind of devolve as Harris became the top of the ticket.”
TAPPER: “All right, Kristen Holmes, thank you so much. And obviously, when it comes to retired Marine General John Kelly versus Donald Trump on just a record of truth telling, I don’t think there’s much competition there.”

Trump Tells CNN He’d Consider Appointing RFK Jr. To Administration Role
BLITZER: “As Democrats continue to rally around Vice President Kamala Harris, former President Trump is in Michigan. That’s where CNN’s Kristen Holmes just caught up with him. Kristen, what did he tell you?”
HOLMES: “Well, Wolf, one of the big pieces of news that he made is we asked him about RFK. Now, reminder that earlier in the day, RFK Jr.’s running mate, Nicole Shanahan, had said that the team had been considering dropping out of the race and endorsing Donald Trump. And I asked Trump specifically if he would consider putting RFK in a role in the administration. He said that he was — would welcome the endorsement. When I pushed him specifically on the administration, here’s what he said.”
[Clip starts]
HOLMES: “Can I ask you about RFK? Because just moments ago his running mate said that they were considering endorsing you. Have you considered him for a role in the administration and what role would that be?”
Trump: “Well, we haven’t, but I would love that endorsement because I’ve always liked him.”
HOLMES: “Would you — would you also consider putting him in the administration?”
Trump: “You’re asking me a very unusual question. I haven’t been asked that question yet. I like him a lot, I respect him a lot. I probably would if something like that would happen.”
[Clip ends]
HOLMES: “Now, obviously, this would be a little strange for traditional Republicans since RFK has a lot of incredibly progressive stances. It also comes a day after he said he would consider putting Elon Musk in the administration. I asked what an administration with two people who a lot of Republicans would not necessarily back would look like. What would he tell Republicans who wouldn’t want to vote for that administration? He blew it off. He said that he believes he is smart, that they are smart, that Republicans like him and it is his decision. But the other thing is that, you know, he really, and I want to point this out, Wolf, we’ve been talking a lot about this. I asked specifically in addition to this, what he was doing differently as we see the polls narrowing, as we see this campaign changing. And he said over and over again that he didn’t need to change anything, that nothing needed to change, even though he himself acknowledged that the polls are closing. So overall, an interesting conversation.”
BLITZER: “Very interesting. Thank you very much. Kristen Holmes reporting for us. Good work.”

‘He Was Forced Out’: Chris Wallace Punctures DNC Unity by Noting Biden Was Just ‘Thrown Out of a Window’
HUNT: “ — about Kamala Harris because it is hard to miss the degree to which this convention has roared to life with Kamala Harris at the top of the ticket in a way that it just simply was not going to do were Joe Biden to be at the top of the ticket. But I think there is also an acknowledgement that doing everything to help her is very important for how people will think about Joe Biden in the future, considering he could have decided not to run for reelection months ago, put them in this position over the summer. Now we find ourselves here.”
Wallace: “You know, Wolf, the word that everybody is using to describe tonight is bittersweet. It’s just bitter. The fact of the matter is — I’m not saying Joe Biden is bitter — but, you know, it’s like you’ve been thrown out a window and as you’re falling, you go, ‘Gee it’s nice out here.’ No, he got thrown out of a window and, basically, he was forced. You know, there’s going to be a lot of talk tonight about how generous it was of him and selfless of him. He was basically forced out by Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama and Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries; and I suspect even the fact that there has been this surge of enthusiasm since he left and Kamala Harris took his place, that’s got to be pretty tough, too. You got thrown out of a window and everybody’s applauding the person who’s now in the room.”
BLITZER: “What do you think he needs to do to make the case for Kamala Harris tonight?”
Wallace: “Well, I think — the first thing he’s got to do is say why he picked her and all of the things in her past. Remember, as popular as she is, she’s still largely unknown to the American people, Wolf. And so, I think he’s got to make the case as to why he picked her, how she was a governing partner. And to try to set up the contrast, which he would have between him and Trump, to set up the contrast between Kamala and Trump.”
HUNT: “And I think one of the things too, Wolf, is one of the behind the scenes dynamics that was driving Biden’s decision making was that he was concerned that Kamala Harris couldn’t beat Donald Trump. And part of what, I think, he’s going to have to do tonight is help assuage those concerns or those doubts and try to answer for that. Because the way in which he picked her also was not entirely free of feeling pressure to make sure he was meeting certain criteria because she had attacked him in a very personal way in the primary campaign.”

They won’t be thinking about her laugh or anything like that, they will want to know what she has to say. How does she approach all of the people who call themselves Democrats, all of the people who are thinking about voting Democrat this time? How do she appeal to them?”
HARRISON: “Chris and Joe, it’s so good to see all of you this morning. Listen, you know, conventions are — yes, there’s the formal process of the nomination and all that, but it is really about storytelling. It is about sharing your story, who you are, what you believe, what your passions are, who you will fight for with the American people, and it is the grandest stage in order to do that. So what we will see, Chris, is throughout these four days we’re going to be telling the story of who Kamala Harris is and who she is going to fight for when she is president of the United States. Marriage equality. Joe Biden has transformed this nation. This man — think about this, folks. Jd Vance is a weird, also it’s totally normal for there to be a mobile abortion and vasectomy van that shows up outside of the dnc for totally normal people to get abortions and vasectomies. Like they are going to a taco truck, to make kuester a.
>> What I probably have more pro choice of friends and others on the panel here. People know my back on the national organization for women. Classical liberals of the majority of Democrats embraced a safe, legal and rare this is ghoulish. It is not what anyone wanted. I think part of the argument, they talk about joy for the future and optimism — mick decided you’re not going to have children or you’re going to have a vasectomy, you are going to have abortions and you want one right now. That is a statement you have no hope in the future. 70% of abortions happen because of economic reasons. I want women this is a perfectly conservative argument. Medically or with a pregnancy thenthat instead of saying I can do this because the Harris economy makes me work two jobs and I’m barely paying the rent you can say yes I can do this. This contradiction does ghoulish obscenity saying or looking optimistically for the future this puts a light that immediate on its face.
>> That is so well said your absolute correct about the economic reasons. Polling does show up most women want to keep their child if they have the financial means to do so. Which is why Rubio has a plan I wish the party would double down on fort women giving them economic opportunity, unborn child support act and so on and so forth. You make a really important point safe, legal, rare it was the democratic mantra in 2008. Let’s play it.
>> Therefore what I have worked for for many years is to make abortion safe, legal and rare.

Abby Phillip: Harris Hasn’t ‘Engaged in Pressing Interactions on Anything’
Johnson: “Do they believe that when it comes to Covid? Do they believe that when — “
JENNINGS: “Yeah, they do. He has a higher approval rating than Joe Biden, so definitely they do.”
SELLERS: “But also, I think — I mean, to give Scott a little bit of grace here — “
PHILLIP: “You’re being — “
SINGLETON: “A lot of grace today. I love it.”
PHILLIP: “Quite a lot.”
JENNINGS: “You all act like people don‘t believe Trump did a better job than what‘s happening now. It is obvious in every poll, they do believe it.”
SELLERS: “I don’t — I mean, if that was the case, he‘d be leading in the polls. But can I give you grace and — “
Johnson: “Or he would have won reelection.”
SELLERS: “If you could just slow up for one second, I mean, like, just accept it. So what I was going to say is that Kamala Harris has stuff to prove in the debate, too.”
PHILLIP: “Sure. Yeah, absolutely.”
SELLERS: “I mean, I think that there is a — “
PHILLIP: “And before the debate, frankly. I mean, she has not — she has not engaged yet.”
SELLERS: “She has engaged.”
PHILLIP: “No, she’s not. She has not — “
Johnson: “She only been on the trail for three weeks.”
PHILLIP: “She’s not engaged — “
Johnson: “She just became our nominee.”
SINGLETON: “How long is she gonna take, two months?”
Johnson: “No.”
SINGLETON: “A week before the election?”
PHILLIP: “She has not engaged in pressing interactions on anything really.”
SELLERS: “Well, no, that‘s not true. Actually, I mean — “
PHILLIP: “That‘s gonna be an issue.”
SELLERS: “That‘s — first of all, that‘s not an issue. I believe that the fact that the mainstream media and many people in D.C. are consumed with the fact that she won‘t sit down with them or do media interviews has posed a problem for them, because what we‘ve seen, poll after poll, individual after individual, voter after voter, is that when she‘s out in Wisconsin, when she‘s out in Arizona, when she‘s out in Pennsylvania, and actually talking to voters, that matters a lot more. And I think that we‘re seeing the inherent value of that. But what I was attempting to say is that I was actually going to give Scott a little bit of grace — I‘m coming back to that grace while I still have it in my heart — Bishop Jakes would be very proud of me at this moment.”
JENNINGS: “Preach.”
SELLERS: “Thank you. Is that Kamala Harris actually has questions to answer as well. You know, she has to be able to answer why, you know, why was she with fracking or Medicare-for-all or health care, all of these things. That‘s why September 10th is so important to her as well.”
SINGLETON: “But why not sit down with a journalist?”

Iowa Voter: I Just Don’t Believe It’s Possible for Harris to Win
RUSH TRANSCRIPT:
>> There were debates over food here and games but the presidential campaigns are nowhere to be found their time and money is for the swing states. That‘s because Trump is strong here and not just in rural farm country this is cedar falls in eastern Iowa midwest solar is busy in part because of Biden Administration, clean energy tax credits. But owner Christmas but is as loyal a Trump voter as they come.
>> I think if all I was selling was government incentives I don‘t think business would be very good, but that‘s not what we‘re selling were selling the power to help people save money.
>> Let‘s seize Trump is off his game a bit since the switch to Harris atop the democratic ticket, I think he‘s spends too much time bashing and complaining. You know, I don‘t know. I think you‘ll catch his stride and I think that he will get back on his horse. And I think he will say what needs to be said and mud thinks the media is too easy on Harris. And like Trump, he sees no way Harris wins and honest election.
>> I just don‘t believe it‘s possible, John, I really I really don‘t yes. I would think that I would think many like me would think that same thing if Kamala Harris gets 81 million votes something something really went.

Axelrod: If Election Were Held Today, It May Well Be for Trump
RUSH TRANSCRIPT:
David Urban, Ashley Allison, and David Axelrod and Alyssa Farah Griffin, David Axelrod how encourage should Democrats be? Is there a danger of them actually being kind of too euphoric?
>> Yeah, I‘ve been talking about this for some time. Look she has made extraordinary progress. We were all in Milwaukee a month ago and there was euphoria there and a sense that this race was over, that they were going to win by a landslide, perhaps sweeping big majorities in the house and Senate and things have changed dramatically. But this is still a very competitive race if the election were today, I‘m not sure who would win and I think it may well be President Trump because it‘s an Electoral College fight. And in those battleground states, we were looking at national numbers, right at the top of this program. That‘s I mean, it‘s misleading.
>> I‘ve said and I‘ve said several times. Hear that for Democrat to win those battleground states, they have to have a significant lead in the Electoral College. Remember, Joe Biden won by 7 million votes nationally, nationally last time, and a margin of 45,000 votes or 44,000 votes in the three closest battleground states combined. So she‘s right be telling people, it‘s good to be enthusiastic, that enthusiasm is really, really important for the Democratic Party. But you have to turn that into energetic action in order to win the election. I think that‘s going to be part of what you hear here.
