(G) The Ordination of Bishop Petros of Astoria in 1962
On November 29, 1962, at the Parish of Saint Markella, in Astoria, NYC, Archimandrite Petros (Astyfides) was ordained to the Episcopal dignity by His Eminence Archbishop Leonty of Chile, who was assisted by His Grace Bishop Seraphim of Caracas. Serving as Hieromonk was Eleutherios Moschos, and serving as HieroDeacon was Nikodemos Kalantis. Chanting were Hieromonk Akakios Ntouskos, and Presbyter George Markou. Present were Gerontissa Syglitiki, her sisterhood, Subdeacon Igor, and the future priest Vsevolod Dutikov. Mr. Dutikov drove the Russian bishops from Synod Headquarters in Manhattan to St. Markella's in Astoria, Queens. The ordination was done in secret. No photographs were taken, and certainly no home movies were recorded on any film camera. Recently, by the will of God, an audio recording of the ordination has been discovered. This is that recording.
For an account of the circumstances that motivated the secrecy of Bishop Petros' ordination, and how the ROCOR (under the Omophorion of Metropolitan St. Philaret of New York) eventually accepted this ordination, and accepted Bishop Petros as a member of the ROCOR Synod of Bishops please see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V05vMkgfO_w&list=PLCKW16X--kPyz2BwizGTxlFDc3-viRG3Y&index=1&t=367s

Metropolitan Petros of Astoria - His Life & Struggle
Metropolitan Petros of Astoria (1915-1997) was the founder of St. Markella’s Cathedral in Astoria, New York, and is considered the founder of Traditionalist Greek Orthodox Christianity, and monasticism in America.
In his lifetime, he was a member of the Church of the Genuine Orthodox Christians of Greece as an Archimandrite, then fell in with a group of vagante pseudo-Old Calendarists, and was taken in by the Metropolia (forerunner of the Orthodox Church in America [OCA]), was consecrated a bishop by the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia, and became a member of the Synod of Bishops of the Church of the GOC of Greece.
During his forty-seven years in America (thirty-five years as bishop,) he founded and pastored St. Markella’s Cathedral, and oversaw other parishes in New York, Chicago, Detroit, Florida, and Montreal. He remained firmly at the helm of the diocese until his final days. He is therefore of great interest to those concerned with genuine Orthodox Christianity, and to those interested in the building of a Greek Orthodox parish from scratch in an immigrant community, and who have an interest in Greek Old Calendarist relations with the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia (ROCOR), among other things.

Found Motion Picture Footage of Two American Saints!
We have never known of any motion picture footage of St John Maximovitch, or of St Philaret of New York other than that a few brief seconds... until now. This recently discovered silent film footage features three sections:
1. The laying of the foundation of the Russian Orthodox Church of the Protection of the Holy Virgin (Palo Alto, California), which was conducted by St. John of San Francisco.
2. The blessing of the cupola and its installation conducted by various clergy.
3. The consecration of the church conducted by the holy hierarchs Metropolitan St Philaret, Archbishop St John and Bishop Nektary of Seattle, with numerous other clergy.
GOCTV has corrected the speed of the footage so that the motion appears more natural. No other alterations have been made.
When GOCTV wrote to the original publisher of this film and asked if we could share it here on our channel, we also asked where the footage was found. We received the this gracious reply:
"I discovered an old tape recording while helping to clean someone's garage storage. I restored it and converted it to a digital format. Don't know the origin of it. And yes, feel free to share it. Thanks."

(G) Feast of St Markella (1962)
The Feast Day of St Markella (July 22/August 4) as celebrated at the then Parish of St Markella in 1962. This Divine Liturgy was celebrated by Archimandrite Petros Astyfides, Fr Eleutherios Moschos, Hieromonk Akakios Mouskos, and Deacon Nikodemos Kalantis. Heard reading the Creed of Faith is Gerontissa Siglitiki. This is the earliest known recording of Divine Services celebrated at the Parish (later Cathedral) of St Markella. The parish was established by Arch. Petros in 1954, eight years before this recording was made, and ten years after he escaped persecution in Greece and came to America. Less than four months after this Divine Liturgy was served (Nov29/Dec12) Archimandrite Petros was ordained to the Episcopacy as Bishop of Astoria. He would later be elevated to the rank of Metropolitan of Astoria. At the time of this recording Arch. Petros was under the omophorion of Bishop Dositheos of New York, who was a Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dositheus_(Ivanchenko)
Fr. Eleutherios, one of the Chian Six, served the Church of St Spyridon in Detroit for many years, and eventually left America and lived on the Holy Mountain until he reposed on April 21, 2020, aged 97. See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-4A9z51pqI The Deacon Nikodemos Kalantis is now an Archimandrite serving the Church of St Mark of Ephesus in Montreal. Gerontissa Siglitiki resides at the Cathedral to this day, with her Sisterhood around her there.
We have left the glitches in the recording intact. What is heard is the distortion of the sound at the point when the old Wollensak reel-to-reel recorder is turned off. This was done periodically to save tape. Unlike digital recording magnetic tape reels were very limited in their available recording time.

The Voice of Orthodoxy (December 8/21, 1972)
The “Voice of Orthodoxy” was a weekly Greek language radio program that was produced and hosted by Bishop Petros (Astyfides) of Astoria. He was occasionally assisted by Gerontissa Siglitiki who hosted portions of the programs. He would record and edit the programs on a “reel to reel” tape recorder in his office at the Cathedral of St Markella in Astoria. He would then have his deacon, Fr Nikodemos Kalantis, deliver them to the broadcast studios of WEVD in Manhattan. WEVD was a radio station that had programing in the Japanese, Yiddish, Russian, Italian, Spanish, English, and Greek languages. The station had as its tag line, “WEVD - The station that speaks your language.” Bishop Petros’ program was produced between the years 1967 and 1973. Thousands of Greek speakers in the Greater New York Metropolitan area would tune in to hear the program every Thursday evening at 7:30 PM. It is believed that the Voice of Orthodoxy was the first regularly scheduled program focusing strictly on the Greek Orthodox Faith in America. Recently, GOCTV has discovered some dozens of original ¼ inch magnetic “reel to reel” tapes of the “Voice of Orthodoxy”. We are currently in the process of digitizing them, translating them, adding English subtitles, and uploading them to the internet so that a new generation of the Faithful can be edified by them. This first program we have uploaded has as its subject, St Philaret the Merciful, some "Church News", and a discussion of why membership in Freemasonry is forbidden to members of the Church. It was broadcast on Thursday - December 8/21, 1972.

The Last Days of the Last Czar
The Last Days of the Last Tsar was produced in 1993. It was Directed by Anatoly Ivanov. It is a sympathetic and bittersweet docudrama about the last days of Czar Nicholas II and his family. The time frame of the film is predominantly that from the Czar's abdication and exile to the brutal execution of the entire Romanov family. The filmmakers have made excellent use of rare documentary footage (and some familiar footage) and integrated it with staged re-enactments by actors. The words of the narration are often from the letters and writings of the Tsar and his Tsarina. (http://www.frozentears.org/Pages/Doc.html)
