DIY Ferro Rod/Fire Steel Handles | Easy Custom Bushcraft Firestarter
Lots of folks like carrying and using a ferrocerium rod (ferro rod, fire steel, flint sparker, or whatever name you want to call them) for starting fires while camping or for emergencies. And there is definitely something cool about throwing a shower of white-hot sparks into a pile of carefully prepared tinder. Sure, a light is easier and more practical, but practical and easy aren't always the point.
Ferro rods come in all sorts of sizes, and can be found with or without handles. I have that it is often cheapest to buy ferro rods without handles and then make a custom handle. This is a fun DIY project that requires very little time or tools. These would also make great gifts, and ferro rods can be found in bulk on Amazon or Ebay.
Whatever you do, have fun, be safe, and start some fires. Safely. Please. Don't burn anything down. Thanks.

CRKT Woods Chogan T-Hawk | It's a tomahawk, and then some
The CRKT Woods Chogan Tomahawk is a beast. It is a tomahawk, but far more functional than a lot of the throwing style or tactical tomahawks that so often are marketed to unsuspecting people as camping or survival tools. This is a tool that is truly usable, and useful. Columbia River Knife and Tool really knocked it out of the park with this thing.
I have had this t-hawk for about five years, and I have used it a lot. Generally, it rides in the car on camping trips and outings and is used as a small camp axe for preparing firewood and doing camp tasks. But it gets a lot of use around the home too because it is much better looking and a lot more fun than most hatchets or small axes, so I often bring it out to the fire pit to cut kindling when we are out enjoying s'mores or dinner over the flames.

Some People Should Not DIY - How our kitchen recovered from bad DIY.
Nearly a year ago, I walked into the kitchen and found water oozing up between the tiles on the floor. That was from a poorly installed floor, a broken supply line to a dishwasher, a dishwasher that was installed in a really bad location to begin with, and a lot of spray foam. Basically, a former homeowner's DIY projects had added up to disaster. It took six months of cooking all of our meals in a microwave before we got any of our kitchen back together, and now a year later, we finally have a beautiful new kitchen with some updates. Well, mostly, we are still waiting on some cabinet doors. But other than that, it is beautiful.
The moral of the story is: DIY can be fun, and can sometimes be cheaper, but when it comes to important things like plumbing, electrical, or structural projects, make sure you know how to do your DIY correctly, or you might suffer later. Or another person will suffer from your DIY mistakes.

Vertx SOCP Sling | Tactical EDC Belt Pack or Tacticool Dad Bag?
The Vertx SOCP Sling is a purpose-made sling pack/belt pack that is designed for covert operations. It is not, however, a dad bag or EDC bag. At least not for me or my purposes.
I had hoped to use this sling when traveling to carry my EDC gear, to get those things out of my pockets for long trips and car rides. Unfortunately, this sling was just too small to work out for my needs.

Building a Box | DIY
I have built a lot of things. Some of them even look nice and are functional. But I have never built a box, which seems like such a basic woodworking project. I'm not up to do any decent joinery, but I can handle some glue and 45 degree angles.
This box took more work than it should have, because the scrap wood was all sorts or bowed and warped, and a couple of my cuts could have been cleaner. I ended up using some dowels to hold the corners together, but then got carried away with that, and ended up with 6 feet of dowel stuck through the box.
In the end, it turned out ok, it definitely is a bit rough and could be a lot better, but I think it will be great for the project I have in mind. I am working on an idea for this box, so it will be back for a future DIY project.

The Pocket Ulfberht | Jörg Sprave's Folding Pocket Knife Sword
This is an overview of the Pocket Ulfberht designed by Joerg Sprave, creator of "The Slingshot Channel." These were sold in a limited run, and I happened to come along at the right time and get one. This is a pretty cool knife, absolutely over the top, but really fun to play with. It was designed to be very tough, but I don't think I will be using it much, it is too big and heavy to really be comfortable in a pocket, and the blade is pretty impractical. Definitely not an EDC knife. But just holding that massive knife, with that sword-like shape, brings out that sense of joy and just silly happiness that I remember feeling when I first got a knife as a kid.

Stanley Bell System Lineman Hammer Restoration
I've had this old hammer sitting on a shelf for quite a while. I thought it was just an ordinary old 3lb straight peen hammer until I saw it said "Bell System" on the side, so I started searching to find out where it had come from. It seems that this is an old lineman's hammer from the days of the Bell System Company. Bell system held a monopoly on telephone and communication in the USA for over a century and it seems that many companies made tools for the various Bell System companies. The hammer was made by Stanley. It is always fun to have a little piece of history cleaned up and put back in working order.

Trucker's Hitch | How to Tie the Knot Every Dad Needs to Know
The Truckers Hitch is a mystical knot, often discussed in hushed tones around the campfire, the subject of a thousand lively discussions and debates, and even a few brawls, yet it remains elusive. Seriously. It is a knot that everyone "knows" but doesn't use, because ratchet straps are easier, or they forgot exactly how to tie it. But everyone should know how to tie a trucker's hitch. And every dad should know this knot, because we all know that it you don't tighten down the load and then slap the ropes and declare "that's not going anywhere" then your load is sure to just fly off a mile down the road.
The method I use is only one way to tie this. The same sort of hitch can be done using any of dozens of other knots and methods, but the principals are the same. This way I tie this using a bell ringer's knot is sometimes considered "less secure" (The Ashley Book of Knots notes this) but I have never had one come loose in any type of rope or cord, and it can easily be modified with an extra half hitch to eliminate any possibility of slipping loose.

My KA-BAR TDI Collection | EDC
I accidentally collected Ka-Bar TDI knives. I don't have every model, and I don't plan to get any more knives in the TDI line, but I have a line-up that represents some of the changes these knives have gone through.
In this video, I have the original Ka-Bar TDI Law Enforcement knife, the Ka-Bar TDI Last Ditch Knife, the Large Ka-Bar TDI knife. the Ka-Bar TDI/Hinderer Hellfire knife, and the Ka-Bar TDI Pocket Strike.
The original TDI is the GOAT.

KA-BAR TDI Pocket Strike Review | EDC
I really wanted to like this knife. I really did. But it was just disappointing. And for $60, it should have been a lot better.
I have always liked the KA-BAR TDI knives, and I think I have almost every size of TDI, and I have carried them all as an everyday carry fixed blade knife at some point. Maybe I just don't get the Pocket Strike, maybe it just wasn't for me, but carrying a large fixed blade knife in a pocket, accessible by only one hand and utilizing the entire pocket, just seems like a poor plan. I like using my pockets for other things, and if I am going to carry a fixed blade, I prefer to have it accessible with either hand.
Let me know what you folks think.

Eberlestock H31 Bandit Pack Review | Pros and Cons
The Eberlestock H31 Bandit is a fantastic little pack. It is a great size for hiking or day trips, with room for the necessities, but in a small lightweight slim pack. This pack is a little bit smaller than the advertised dimensions, and will not carry things like laptops for notebooks, but still makes a good EDC backpack, and it's small size makes it very easy to carry in close quarters, whether through a crowd or in dense trees and brush. My wife also really liked this pack and found it to be very comfortable to carry. She stated that backpack straps are generally uncomfortable for women with larger...chests, but that the Bandit was surprisingly easy to carry.

DIY Height Ruler/Growth Chart and Pencil Level
I remember standing against the doorjamb as a kid while my mom measured my height, and I remember looking at all the marks on that doorway from the time I could stand and being amazed at how small I had been. I have been wanting to make a height ruler or growth chart for my kids, but instead of a doorway, I wanted something that I could move when needed.
This is a very simple project that anyone can do in an evening. I spent way too much time making a pencil level before I thought to look online and realized I could have bought on Amazon for about the same amount I paid in broken pencils. But it was fun, and now our growth chart has a one-of-a-kind pencil.

Throw Out Your Bushcraft Knife
You don't actually have to throw them out, but this is a challenge to take a look at your go-to knives, and maybe reconsider some old classics.
Felix Immler's channel here: https://www.youtube.com/user/Taschenmesserbuch
I have been watching Felix Immler's videos for a while, and they are always fantastic. I find myself very often thinking along the "big tool for a big job" sort of lines when it comes to knives, saws, and axes. Felix's videos have really made me reconsider what is possible with just a really basic folding knife and a small blade.

EDC Bag 2021: What's Inside My Every Day Carry Backpack
What is in my EDC bag? Well, it has changed a bit over the last year, mostly due to changing jobs, and the general everyday needs for myself and my family. I try to keep my everyday carry bag pretty minimal, so there is room for whatever I need for the activities of the day. I started putting a lot of EDC items into a smaller pouch so I could move that between different packs and bags, which has been especially useful when changing from dad-mode to work-mode, and from a backpack to a laptop bag to a diaper bag/activity bag.

Vertx Gamut Overland Backpack Full Review | Pros and Cons
The Vertx Gamut Overland is the big brother to the very popular Gamut backpack. It is essentially a larger EDC pack, made to hold those larger items and all the gear that you want to carry but can't fit into a smaller everyday pack.
Overview of the pack: 1:47
Pros: 11:07
Cons: 13:02
Final Thoughts: 15:35
I really like this pack, but it really didn't fit into a need for me, It was too big for my regular EDC pack, too big to use as a carry-on bag, and not really built for backpacking. I think this would make a great bug-out bag, or 72-hour bag, or that sort of thing. It worked great as a traveling pack for car trips and gave me lots of ability to carry...things.
When the pack is fully loaded, it can get heavy and it isn't built for heavy loads. The weight will carry mostly on the shoulders. There is a hip belt that helps with some weight distribution, but not a lot. Also when the pack is fully loaded, any items in the CCW pocket tend to push into your back a bit. If you are planning to hike with this pack with a full load, or if you are loading it up as a prepping bag, put flat items in the CCW pocket.

Why Carry a CPR Mask? | EDC
Cardiac arrest kills a person about every 45 seconds in the USA. Everyone should know CPR.
Yes, you can do compressions only. No, you don't NEED a mask. But a barrier device with a one-way valve will help you deliver the highest quality CPR, and increase the chances of a person surviving. These little keychain masks are not the greatest. But they work, and I would rather have a cheap barrier with a simple valve than have nothing at all.

How To Tie a Bowline...Correctly
The bowline is a pretty easy knot to learn and can be pretty useful. In fact, you would be hard-pressed to find a list of essential knots, or basic knots, or any other list that doesn't have the bowline on it.
There are dozens of variations of the bowline, but the most important first step is to just learn to tie a bowline and tie it correctly and recognize when it is tied wrong. Then add in some tricks like a snap bowline or slipknot bowline, and a one-handed bowline.

Morakniv Eldris Review | EDC
Yes, I know that I don't know how to pronounce "Morakniv."
The Morakniv Eldris is a really small knife, but it is surprisingly useful and capable. I could easily see this being a knife of choice for EDC or just general use for someone looking for a fixed blade instead of a folder. It is affordable, stainless steel blade, solid sheath, and overall Morakniv quality and value. This is a great option for a backup knife, and bug-out or survival bag, a car kit, or a general-purpose small camp knife. it is also great for folks with smaller hands, and I think this would be ideal as a starter camp knife for kids.

What's in my pockets | 2021 EDC and Channel Update
It has been about a year since I did an EDC video, so here is an EDC update. Not much has changed. Also, this is a bit of a channel update, I have been making videos and uploading them to YouTube for a bit over a year, so just a few thoughts on that.

SOG PopGrip Multi-Tool Phone Grip and Stand | PopSocket Review
Yes, I know my hands are gross. And I am filming with my phone, so the case was off. None of that changes the fact that this little tool is kind of useless and more of an annoyance than a help on your phone.
