SERVICE CALL - Repairing Weird Equipment I've Never Seen Before
This is a good episode to show y'all because it's a bizarre thing that I got called into work on. Sometimes you run into equipment or situations that you've never seen before, and this is a great example of how I deal with it on the fly.

As you progress on your journey to becoming an experienced electrician, you will gain experience by running across situations, environments, and equipment that you've never seen before. A lot of time will be spent diagnosing problems that you don't have answers to. This is completely normal, and is a great thing as it forces you to have to think and find information. It's a great way to teach yourself and stretch the boundaries of what you know and what you don't.
Many people are under the false idea that you get to a point where you know everything when you do a job long enough. Fortunately for this career, that's just not true. The electrical trade changes so much that there is a constant renewal of new equipment, codes, materials, and procedures - forcing anyone on their journey to continually have to learn new information. The more you learn, the more you will open yourself to new avenues that are constantly evolving.
It's absolutely ok to not know something, and have to go out and seek answers. This is what everyone else is doing as well. Some want to pretend that they know all of the answers and are more experienced than everyone else, but those tend to be very insecure people who, deep down, really know that they're deficient - and are just trying to hide it by overcompensating the contrary.
As you journey out into the world, ask lots of questions, study, read books, listen to people speak, ask more questions, dig in, write things down, debate, and KEEP LEARNING. You will be wrong a lot. This is a great thing. Embrace it. It will be THE THING that makes you outstanding at what you do.

FEDERAL PACIFIC ELECTRICAL PANELS - why their panels are dangerous
As electricians, we always hear people say "You should get rid of that FEDERAL PACIFIC panel" and replace it with a new one. What is the story behind all of this, and why is it a big deal?

Federal Pacific panels are installed in homes all over America and Canada, and have been since the 50's and 60's. The problem with this is that the breakers oftentimes don't work. There's actually quite a long history of coverups and lies that occurred over the past several decades, which ended up in fraud charges, and ultimately the collapse of the Federal Pacific Electric Company.
The big thing to take away is that Federal Pacific was caught lying about their adherence to UL standards. They were stripped of their UL listing over the years but continued to print "UL Listed" on the packaging and continued pushing out breakers that had up to a 60% failure rate for decades.
Many replacement breakers are made today, that fit into these older systems such as Zinsco, FPE, Wadsworth, Challenger, and Pushmatic - however, some believe these products should not be used, and rather the entire panel should be replaced. The argument though, is that not everyone can afford a brand new panel replacement. When you consider the cost of adding surge protection, proper grounding, arc-fault, ground-fault, and dual-function breakers, and potentially indoor AFCI protection for circuits that cannot be protected at the panel, simply replacing breakers is a much more affordable solution.

Problems With The Electrical Trade - PART 1 (WOMEN IN THE TRADES)

For all of the women out there who are already in the trades, please leave some comments if you think I missed anything or completely misrepresented any part of this discussion. My aim is to bring people together and get people into environments where they feel they're able to express themselves freely, with respect as the tone for the message.
Before we get into the fact there are job shortages we simply need to address the maltreatment of females in the workplace. It's oftentimes not intentional, as it is lacking mindfulness about them as humans, and strictly seeing everything they do through the lense of "woman" first. This is a huge ship to turn around, but for the sake of these millions of women affected by the issue, it needs to be worked on by everyone involved.
On top of this issue, we simply can't afford to be picky. We lack a lot of electricians coming up through the ranks to replace the older generations that are leaving. What we need is more electricians, period. We can't make distinctions on gender, race, sexual preference or anything that is simply an observation of a type of person. We need bodies and minds, that are qualified to do a job. We need to train them. They need to train others. We need to get jobs done. We need to keep the infrastructure of America running. It all boils down to whether or not we'll be able to as the generations continue forward. Will we have to adjust materials and methods to allow anyone to work on electrical systems, because electricians go away? Or will we stop discriminating and alienating huge portions of the population so they won't even look at this as a potential option to join?
The electrical industry is predominantly male, like 96% male, 4% female. If we could raise that number to even 80/20 it would make a massive change for millions of people. There would be more jobs, more competition, more training, less unemployment, a larger pool of people to hire from, and more skilled workers around in general. There's no downside to fixing this issue. And it starts with being mindful of the existing workforce, as well as creating an environment that draws people in and encourages them to excel rather than makes them feel left out.

How To Work on LIVE CIRCUITS - Replacing Circuit Breakers in Old ZINSCO Panel
There are many old-school breakers out there still working today, even though their companies have shut down, and these materials have been outlawed for safety reasons. Many of these terrible breakers...are in my house currently. So today we swap them out, and talk about WORKING ON LIVE CIRCUITS SAFELY.

Connecticut Electric reached out to me about a year ago and we sat down and did an episode together talking about many of the products they offer. They manufacture brand new breakers for old legacy electrical systems like Federal Pacific, Zinsco, Wadesworth, Pushmatic, Challenger, and Murray.
When I told them I have an old Zinsco panel they asked me to snap a picture of all of the breakers and they offered to send me all new replacement breakers so I could test out their equipment. I happily agreed and thought it would be a great opportunity to test out my new GoPro 9 in the process. Many of you have asked that I strap on a GoPro and work so you can see first hand how I work. So I went and bought one so I could replace all my breakers.
I found, in the process, that one of my busses was damaged, and it was the spot on the bus where the existing 100 amp main breaker attaches. You can tell that there's been some heating issues over the years and when I tried putting the new 100 amp breaker in it's place it gave me a lot of trouble. But that's not a flaw in the breaker, it's a flaw in the bus. All of the other breakers went in just fine and now I have a practically new panel...except that I'm going to be ripping it all down and replacing it soon lol. That damaged bus makes me a little leery, even though I haven't had any issues with it in the past.
Once I got all of the new breakers in I began working on the live main breaker. I didn't have the luxury of the power being disconnected on this one, so I put on hot gloves and a face shield because of the environment I was working in. I don't recommend working on live wires if you don't have to. It's extremely dangerous, even when you're fully aware and paying attention. But every once in awhile you do need to work on live circuits, and there are companies that make PPE just for the occasion.
There are full flash suits that can be worn, however I chose not to wear them in this situation. I have many years of experience in this trade, I've worked on live circuits for years so I used the amount of PPE that I wanted to for the situation. This is also my own home, my own company, my insurance, so it was my liability to work with the level of PPE I did. Some would say I shouldn't have bothered wearing any at all, others would say I should have had the full suit on. Every electrician is the smartest electrician on the planet, so take what they say with a grain of salt. Just be careful working on live circuits. Make sure you wear proper PPE (information can be found in NFPA 70E), and don't do this kind of work unless you are a licensed and insured electrician, or are under the direct supervision of one.

Mister Sparky has been in business since 1998 and has grown to be a very large electrical contracting company that is part of a larger umbrella company called Authority Brands - which also owns Benjamin Franklin Plumbing and America's Swimming Pool Company, The Cleaning Authority, Homewatch CareGivers, Mosquito Squad and One Hour Heating and Air conditioning.
The success of Mister Sparky is largely due, as Mark talks about, to franchising. Most of the partnerships they have are existing companies that join the Mister Sparky franchise, in which Mark and his team help coach businesses for profitability. The benefits of a franchise are many, though you are giving up some of your profits to the parent company - as well as a lot of decision-making and freedom you would otherwise keep being an independent contractor. You gain the support of a successful business, marketing, coaching, and buying power, but there are costs associated with this business model. I do recommend researching the franchise model before jumping into any decisions. As with anything in business, it's wise to know the pro's and con's of what you're getting into before making such a large decision.
You can reach out to mark's team and ask them any questions you may have about their business model and see whether or not you'd be a good fit. Use the link above to get ahold of his team.

Which Bandsaw You Should Own - DEEP CUT, COMPACT, or SUB COMPACT
I have all 4 models of Milwaukee bandsaws, two are M18 and two are M12. Here's the pros and cons of each.

Milwaukee has two different battery systems, the M12 and the M18. The M12, as you may have guessed, is the 12-volt platform - while the M18 is the 18-volt. Both are great and have very specific design considerations that belong in different categories. So when thinking about buying a new bandsaw, think about the true use of the tool beforehand.
First off, are you wanting to cut really small things or really large? Or would you prefer something in the middle that gets a cross-section of both worlds?
Next, do you want something light-weight that you can use on the top of a ladder without your arm feeling like it's going to fall off from lifting it over your head, or would you prefer something really lightweight?
Lastly, how often are you using it? Is this an all-day, everyday need or will you only pull it out every once in a while?
Once you know these questions you can begin to assess whether or not you'll need the stout 18-volt system that is far heavier, and heavier-duty - or if the 12-volt light-weight, low power consumption model will work better.

TRANSFORMERS - What They Are, How They Work, How Electricians Size Them
Let’s open up a transformer and dig through it to see how they work. Transformers are extremely useful devices used in electrical systems to raise and lower voltage. They’re also used for isolation, typically in cleaning up power. They only exist in the world of Alternating Current, however, so in DC circuits you won’t find transformers used.

As an apprentice, I was always fascinated by transformers. They take incoming power and through thin-air (magnetic coupling) change that power to something different. You can feed 480-volts into the PRIMARY side of the transformer and get 240-volts out…and there are no moving parts. Maybe I’m weird but that just always seemed COOL to me!
Transformers are essentially constant-power devices. This means that you can change the voltage and amperage values but the power (wattage) through the device will remain the same. This is why transformers are rated in power (KVA or KiloVolt-Amperes). A 75kva transformer will remain 75kva no matter what we do with the voltage in or out. The relationship between the voltage and amperage is inverse through the device so if you feed 480-volts in at 100-amps, you’ll get 240-volts out at 200-amps. Both of which equal 48,000 VA (constant power)
There are many different types of transformers out there, but most commonly you’ll come across the Dry-Type Delta/Wye transformer. This means that the PRIMARY (incoming) side is wound differently than the SECONDARY (outgoing) side. The PRIMARY windings are wound in series with one-another (DELTA), whereas the SECONDARY windings are wound in parallel to one-another (WYE). There are several more types that we don’t get into in this video, but examples are Wye/Delta, Wye/Wye, Delta/Delta, and the ZigZag. These all operate the same way, but the results vary because the windings all address a specific problem or need.
Grounding and bonding of transformers is a really important thing to get right. Transformers are considered “separately derived systems” for the purposes of the National Electrical Code, so knowing how to bond the grounding and grounded conductors, as well as any grounding electrode, the metal enclosure of the transformer, and building steel is important.
This video covers how to size both single-phase and three-phase transformers, as well as gives some tips at the end for installing and working with them.

Gender issues are becoming more prevalent as a lot more women are joining the trades. As the years continue on we need to start reshaping the lenses we see the world through so everybody has equality of opportunity in the trades. The electrical industry is roughly 95% male and 5% female occupied, and as more women start finding the trades as a viable option for a career we need to ensure that we're "geared up" to have them aboard.
Most contractors and job sites around the US are set up for men to work smoothly without much consideration for women, as these trades have been male-centric since they've begun. Angel and I talk at great length about some of the things she's faced in her career, as well as things other women come across in the field that many of us are just not aware of. Change starts with a conversation, but actions speak louder than words. At the very least we need to start having more public discourse on the issues involved so that more people are aware of them, only then can meaningful change take root.

Terminating/Testing Network Cables - CAT 3, CAT5, CAT6, CAT 7, CAT 8
Punching down and testing cat5 cables is something that a lot of people struggle with understanding so today I'm going to talk about what the various category cables are, how to decide if you need A or B configuration, and how to check your terminations with a tester when you're done.

Category 5 cable is probably the most commonly know network cable. It's only one of the many kinds out there, however. There are others like Category 3, Cat 5, Cat 5e, Cat 6, Cat 6a, Cat 7, and even the new Cat 8. Category cables are simply twisted pair cable assemblies that have 4 pairs of conductors - 8 total wires inside. Each pair is color-coded to allow the installer to see which pairs they're dealing with when making terminations.
The colors for terminating are made up of 4 solid colored conductors, and 4 striped. Each solid has a matching color striped conductor that it is twisted together with inside of the jacketing.
Each pair has a specific purpose in how they send and receive signals, and when punching down keystone jacks and crimping RJ45 connectors you need to know the order they're supposed to go to ensure the cables work correctly.
568A or 568B?
Every termination we do nowadays has two options for how the wires can be ordered. The old way of wiring was using the T568A configuration. These days most people use the T568B configuration, and there's a reason for it.
A straight-through cable will have one configuration on both ends of the cable. This means that on one side you'll have A, and the other you'll have A. This allows information to be passed "straight through" the cable for devices that are DIFFERENT than one-another. If you wire for configuration B, the same is true. The reason there are 2 configurations is that there is a type of network cable called a "crossover cable" that needs to be able to be visibly recognized when looking at it. This type of cable has ONE side using an A configuration, while the other has a B configuration. This allows two SIMILAR devices to speak to each other, and listen to each other at the same time.
If you try to use a crossover cable for 2 different devices it will not work, and if you try to use a straight-through cable for 2 similar devices it will not work. Each has their purpose. However, whether or not you use A or B configuration, your cables will still work if you make sure both ends are the same. Crossover cables are very rare and are used specifically by people who know why they're using them. For the average person, wiring a cable with both ends as A, while hooking up to a network that is wired in B is ok. All of the pins will still line up allowing different devices to communicate. It's only a problem when the pins differ on both ends or are punched down/terminated incorrectly.
TERMINATING RJ45 CONNECTORS
An RJ45 connector is the "male" end of a cable that plugs into the "female" keystone jack. An RJ45 has 8 metal pins that pierce the sheathing of the 8 individual wires in the CAT cable assembly. These pins have a specific order that must be followed to ensure they transmit and receive data, otherwise, they won't work or they'll short-out your equipment.
Strip out about 3 inches of jacketing at the end of the cable. Cut off any plastic insulation, or fibers that come on the inside of the cable. Next untwist all of the pairs and straighten them out using something solid. I drag the edge of my strippers down each conductor to remove the curls in each one. Then line each conductor up in either the A or B configuration from LEFT TO RIGHT as they emerge from the jacketing. Next, take your RJ45 connector and measure out how much of the conductors you need, and cut off the excess. You should only need roughly 1/2-inch to 3/8-inch of conductors sticking out of the jacketing.
