NOTHING BUT THE BLOOD OF JESUS LYRICS
What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
O precious is the flow
that makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know;
nothing but the blood of Jesus.
For my pardon this I see:
nothing but the blood of Jesus.
For my cleansing this my plea:
nothing but the blood of Jesus.
O precious is the flow
that makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know;
nothing but the blood of Jesus.
This is all my hope and peace:
nothing but the blood of Jesus.
This is all my righteousness:
nothing but the blood of Jesus.
O precious is the flow
that makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know;
nothing but the blood of Jesus.
O precious is the flow
that makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know;
nothing but the blood of Jesus.

O LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEM LYRICS
O little town of Bethlehem
How still we see thee lie
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
The everlasting light
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in thee tonight
For Christ is born of Mary
And gathered all above
While mortals sleep, the angels keep
Their watch of wond'ring love
O morning stars, together
Proclaim the holy Birth
And praises sing to God the King
And peace to men on earth
O holy child of Bethlehem
Descend to us we pray
Cast out our sin and enter in
Be born in us today
We hear the Christmas angels
Their great glad tidings tell
O come to us, abide with us
Our Lord Emmanuel

O PRAISE THE NAME (ANASTASIS) - HILLSONG//COVERS BY DEREK
Derek Charles Johnson’s performance of “O Praise The Name (Anastasis)”
Song by Hillsong
This song has become one of my favorite songs in recent years that would be considered a modern hymn. It has a quality that compares to others like Death Was Arrested or even This I Believe (The Creed) — another Hillsong gem. Just like last week, I find this song to be an excellent addition around Easter. But really what we are expressing is a year round truth. The song takes us back to the point of Calvary, to the empty tomb, and points us to Christ’s return. As I have been contemplating the blessed hope lately (my current blog series), a song like this ties in marvelously. I hope you enjoy it and I hope it is an encouragement to you in your time of worship this week.

I cast my mind to Calvary
Where Jesus bled and died for me
I see His wounds, His hands, His feet
My Savior on that cursed tree
His body bound and drenched in tears
They laid Him down in Joseph's tomb
The entrance sealed by heavy stone
Messiah still and all alone
O praise the Name of the Lord our God
O praise His Name forevermore
For endless days we will sing Your praise
Oh Lord, oh Lord our God
Then on the third at break of dawn
The Son of heaven rose again
O trampled death where is your sting?
The angels roar for Christ the King
O praise the Name of the Lord our God
O praise His Name forevermore
For endless days we will sing Your praise
Oh Lord, oh Lord our God
O praise the Name of the Lord our God
O praise His Name forevermore
For endless days we will sing Your praise
Oh Lord, oh Lord our God
He shall return in robes of white
The blazing sun shall pierce the night
And I will rise among the saints
My gaze transfixed on Jesus' face
O praise the Name of the Lord our God
O praise His Name forevermore
For endless days we will sing Your praise
Oh Lord, oh Lord our God
Oh Lord, oh Lord our God
Oh Lord, oh Lord our God

WALK BY FAITH LYRICS
Will I believe You when You say
Your hand will guide my every way
Will I receive the words You say
Every moment of every day
Well I will walk by faith
Even when I cannot see
Well because this broken road
Prepares Your will for me
Well help me to rid endless fears
You’ve been so faithful for all my years
With one breath You make me new
Your grace covers all I do
Well I will walk by faith
Even when I cannot see
Well because this broken road
Prepares Your will for me
Well I’m broken but I still see Your face
Well You’ve spoken pouring Your words of grace
Well I will walk by faith
Even when I cannot see
Well because this broken road
Prepares Your will for me
Well I will walk by faith
Even when I cannot see
Well because this broken road
Prepares Your will for me
Well Hallelujah, Halle-lu
Well Hallelujah, Halle-lu
I will walk by faith
I will walk by faith
I will walk by faith
I will walk by faith
I will walk by faith
I will walk by faith

HOW GREAT THOU ART//COVERS BY DEREK
Derek Charles Johnson’s performance of "How Great Thou Art"
Another hymn that for me stands the test of time is How Great Thou Art. There’s a simplicity about it, especially in the refrain (Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee, how great Thou art, how great Thou art). Some of the best worship songs today still come back to that simplicity and acknowledge who God is and the subsequent response on our behalf. I also love that this hymn moves through a progression of thought: from the awe/wonder/majesty of God, to the work of the cross, and finally, to the return of Jesus. This song moves through a lot yet with each chorus the response is the same: He is great and worthy to be praised!
Would love to hear your thoughts on this song…what has it meant for you as you’ve sung it throughout your life? Maybe you’ve never really heard it before. If so, what is your impression of it from the lyrics and melody? I might be biased with the songs I cover but to me, this is an amazingly beautiful piece of artwork and creativity. Major props and thanks to Carl Boberg who penned these lines.

O Lord my God! When I in awesome wonder
Consider all the works Thy hand hath made
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed
Refrain:
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
And when I think that God, His Son not sparing,
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin
When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart
Then I shall bow in humble adoration,
And there proclaim, my God, how great You are!

No Overnight Success Story | AS BOLD AS LIONS DEVOTIONAL | September 9, 2022
Today’s Devotional - Friday September 9th
“No Overnight Success Story”
I am sure of this, that He who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. Philippians 1:6
Question for today: In what area of my life am I trying to fast-track the results, rather than waiting on God?
Pray: Lord develop within me a heart that is patient, knowing that the journey with you is just as important as the destination.

GOODNESS OF GOD LYRICS
I love You, Lord
Oh Your mercy never fails me
All my days, I've been held in Your hands
From the moment that I wake up
Until I lay my head
I will sing of the goodness of God
All my life You have been faithful
All my life You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God
I love Your voice
You have led me through the fire
In darkest night
You are close like no other
I've known You as a Father
I've known You as a Friend
And I have lived in the goodness of God
All my life You have been faithful
All my life You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
I will sing of the goodness of God
Your goodness is running after
It's running after me
Your goodness is running after
It's running after me
With my life laid down
I'm surrendered now
I give You everything
Your goodness is running after
It's running after me
Your goodness is running after
It's running after me
Your goodness is running after
It's running after me
With my life laid down
I'm surrendered now
I give You everything
Your goodness is running after
It's running after me
All my life You have been faithful
All my life You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
I will sing of the goodness of God
All my life You have been faithful
All my life You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
I will sing of the goodness of God
I will sing of the goodness of God

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY//COVERS BY DEREK
Derek Charles Johnson’s performance of “Holy, Holy, Holy”
Posted this one a couple years ago but wanted to dust it off and repost for the COVERS BY DEREK series. Still a favorite hymn and a hymn that takes us right to the throne room of God. We need to sing songs and write songs, I believe, that take that posture in worship. I am eager for the day when we can see Jesus face to face and sing holy, holy, holy in His presence!

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!
Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore Thee,
Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee,
Who wert and art and ever more shall be.
Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide Thee,
Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see;
Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee,
Perfect in power, in love, and purity.
Love and purity

Following God’s Battle Plan | AS BOLD AS LIONS DEVOTIONAL | April 28, 2023
Following God’s Battle Plan | AS BOLD AS LIONS DEVOTIONAL | April 28, 2023
Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/nx_b9-J8_Iw
And the LORD said to Gideon, “With the 300 men who lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hand, and let all the others go every man to his home.” Judges 7:7
Judges chapters 6-8 are a case study in following a battle plan that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense; at least from man’s perspective. Gideon is chosen by God to lead Israel into battle against their enemy, the Midianites. When called, Gideon is actually hiding in a winepress threshing grain. Still God calls him a “mighty man of valor” (Judges 6:12). As God prepares Gideon for battle, he cuts his army numbers down…way down. From a size of 32,000 Gideon somehow ends up with 300. From there, the battle itself depended upon two unlikely weapons: trumpets and jars with torches. Yet in all of this, Midian is routed. Surprised by an attack at night, Israel ambushes the camp. When the trumpets are blown, the enemy turns upon itself in utter confusion.
Sometimes when God calls us to do something, the plans don’t make any sense. Financially the numbers don’t work out. Physically the toll seems too hard. Mentally and emotionally, we just don’t have the stamina to put forth the effort. But these are all reasons to quit based upon our abilities. God wasn’t looking for Gideon’s ability, only his availability. It was obvious God had another plan as He slimmed the army down to 300. It was obvious God would bring victory in such a way that only He could get the credit. If there’s a plan that seems too big today, good. It’s God’s way of letting you know the battle is His. You just need to obey and be ready for the call.
Question for today: What is impossible with God? In light of that, how do I approach the mountains in front of me?
Pray: God You are still the God who brought Gideon the victory with just 300 men. Help me trust You for victories today and stop relying upon my own strength.

HOW DEEP THE FATHER'S LOVE FOR US LYRICS
How deep the Father’s love for us,
How vast beyond all measure,
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure.
How great the pain of searing loss
The Father turns His face away,
As wounds which mar the Chosen One
Bring many sons to glory.
Behold the man upon a cross,
My sin upon His shoulders;
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice
Call out among the scoffers.
It was my sin that held Him there
Until it was accomplished;
His dying breath has brought me life
I know that it is finished.
I will not boast in anything,
No gifts, no power, no wisdom;
But I will boast in Jesus Christ,
His death and resurrection.
Why should I gain from His reward?
I cannot give an answer;
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom.
Why should I gain from His reward?
I cannot give an answer;
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom.

LOVE CAME DOWN - BRIAN JOHNSON//COVERS BY DEREK
Derek Charles Johnson’s performance of “Love Came Down”
Written by Brian Johnson, Jenn Johnson, Jeremy Riddle, Ian McIntosh, and Jeremy Edwardson
From the self-titled album “Love Came Down” by Brian Johnson
One of my favorite worship tunes in the past 10 or so years, Love Came Down is just a simple statement of worship. I don’t know if many people have heard of it as it wasn’t a huge song. But a wonderful acoustic arrangement is available on Brian Johnson’s album of the same name: Love Came Down - Live Acoustic Worship In The Studio. It’s a gem of an album and honestly, when going back and playing this song, I realized I had forgotten just how good the whole album was. And it was at the very start of Bethel Music (which Brian and wife Jenn founded); at the origins of what they were doing. Hope you’ll enjoy the tune and pray that it will lead you into worship and adoration of our Lord and Savior. His love indeed came down and rescued us!

If my heart is overwhelmed and I cannot hear Your voice
I’ll hold onto what is true, though I cannot see
If the storms of life they come and the road ahead gets steep
I will lift these hands in faith, I will believe
I remind myself of all that You've done
And the life I have because of Your Son
Love came down and rescued me
Love came down and set me free
I am Yours, I am forever Yours
Mountain high or valley low
I sing out remind my soul
That I am Yours, I am forever Yours
When my heart is filled with hope and every promise comes my way
When I feel Your hands of grace rest upon me
Staying desperate for You, God
Staying humble at Your feet
I will lift these hands and praise, I will believe
I remind myself of all that You've done
And the life I have because of Your Son
Love came down and rescued me
Love came down and set me free
I am Yours, I am forever Yours
Mountain high or valley low
I sing out remind my soul
That I am Yours, I am forever Yours
I am Yours
I am Yours
For all my days, Jesus I am Yours
Oh I am Yours
I am Yours
For all my days, Jesus I am Yours
Love came down and rescued me
Love came down and set me free
I am Yours, I am forever Yours
Mountain high or valley low
I sing out remind my soul
That I am Yours, I am forever Yours

PRAISE TO THE LORD, THE ALMIGHTY LYRICS
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!
O my soul, praise Him, for He is thy health and salvation!
All ye who hear, now to His temple draw near,
Praise Him in glad adoration
Praise to the Lord, Who o’er all things so wonderfully reigneth
Shelters thee under His wings, yea, so gently sustaineth
Hast thou not seen how thy desires e’er have been
Granted in what He ordaineth?
Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore Him!
All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before Him.
Let the Amen sound from His people again;
Gladly for aye we adore Him
Let the Amen sound from His people again;
Gladly for aye we adore Him

THE FIRST NOEL LYRICS
The first Noel the angels did say
was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay,
in fields where they lay keeping their sheep,
on a cold winter’s night that was so deep.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel.
They looked up and saw a star
Shining in the east beyond them far,
And to the earth it gave great light,
And so it continued both day and night.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel.
Then let us all with one accord
Sing praises to our heavenly Lord
That hath made Heaven and earth of nought
And with His blood mankind has bought.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel.

ANGELS WE HAVE HEARD ON HIGH LYRICS
Angels we have heard on high
Sweetly singing o'er the plains
And the mountains in reply
Echoing their joyous strains
Gloria
In excelsis Deo
Gloria
In excelsis Deo
Shepherds, why this jubilee?
Why your joyous strains prolong?
What the gladsome tidings be
Which inspire your heavenly song?
Gloria
In excelsis Deo
Gloria
In excelsis Deo
Come to Bethlehem and see
Him whose birth the angels sing
Come, adore on bended knee
Christ the Lord, the newborn King
Gloria
In excelsis Deo
Gloria
In excelsis Deo

THIS IS MY FATHER'S WORLD//COVERS BY DEREK
Derek Charles Johnson’s performance of “This Is My Father’s World”
This is my Father’s world
The battle is not done
Jesus who died will be satisfied
And earth and heaven be one
There’s so much promise and so much hope in just these short verses! I have to take solace in the fact that this world is still in our Father’s hands. It is His creation: He made it and He sustains it. “Tho the wrong seem oft so strong….” Those words ring in my ears as I look around and see the effects of sin: death, decay, anger, bitterness, confusion and so on. But the battle is not done! Jesus died once and for all for sin. His death is not in vain. He is coming again and is looking for a people who are sold out to Him. Who trust, love and obey Him despite what the world looks like. This is my Father’s world and let me never forget that He is still on the throne. Amen!

This is my Father's worldAnd to my listening earsAll nature sings and round me ringsThe music of the spheresThis is my Father's worldI rest me in the thoughtOf rocks and trees of skies and seasHis hands the wonders wrought
This is my Father's worldThe birds their carols raiseThe morning light the lily whiteDeclare their Maker's praiseThis is my Father's worldHe shines in all that's fairIn the rustling grass I hear Him passHe speaks to me everywhere
This is my Father’s world
O and let me never forget
That tho the wrong seem oft so strong
God is the ruler yet
This is my Father’s world
The battle is not done
Jesus who died will be satisfied
And earth and heaven be one
This is my Father’s world

I STAND AMAZED (HOW MARVELOUS)//COVERS BY DEREK
Derek Charles Johnson’s performance of “I Stand Amazed (How Marvelous)”
Another hymn that speaks so clearly about the cross and Christ’s sacrifice, I Stand Amazed is a personal favorite. It’s been a song I’ve come back to over the years as a mainstay hymn in many a worship set. To stand in amazement of something to me means just pausing, reflecting, and being in awe of it. That is what the work of Jesus on the cross should do for all of us: it should lead us into wonderment every time we consider it. “My song shall ever be” is a reminder that this hope isn’t just for yesterday or today or tomorrow…it stands for ALL eternity. Amen and hallelujah! Hope you are blessed today!

I stand amazed in the presence
Of Jesus the Nazarene
And wonder how He could love me
A sinner condemned, unclean
How marvelous, how wonderful
And my song shall ever be
How marvelous, how wonderful
Is my Savior's love for me
He took my sins and my sorrows
He made them His very own
He bore the burden to Calvary
He suffered and died alone
How marvelous, how wonderful
And my song shall ever be
How marvelous, how wonderful
Is my Savior's love for me
How marvelous, how wonderful
And my song shall ever be
How marvelous, how wonderful
Is my Savior's love for me
How marvelous, how wonderful
And my song shall ever be
How marvelous, how wonderful
Is my Savior's love for me
When with the ransomed in glory
His face I at last shall see
’Twill be my joy through the ages
To sing of His love for me
How marvelous, how wonderful
And my song shall ever be
How marvelous, how wonderful
Is my Savior's love for me

COME THOU FOUNT OF EVERY BLESSING LYRICS
Come, Thou Fount of every blessing;
tune my heart to sing Thy grace;
streams of mercy, never ceasing,
call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
sung by flaming tongues above;
praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it,
mount of God’s redeeming love!
Here I raise my Ebenezer;
hither by Thy help I’m come;
and I hope, by thy good pleasure,
safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
wandering from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger,
interposed his precious blood.
O to grace how great a debtor
daily I’m constrained to be!
Let Thy goodness, like a fetter,
bind my wandering heart to Thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
prone to leave the God I love;
here’s my heart Lord take and seal it;
seal it for Thy courts above.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
prone to leave the God I love;
here’s my heart Lord take and seal it;
seal it for Thy courts above.

MAKE ROOM LYRICS
Here is where I lay it down
Every burden every crown
This is my surrender
This is my surrender
Here is where I lay it down
Every lie and every doubt
This is my surrender
And I will make room for you
To do whatever you want to
To do whatever you want to
And I will make room for you
To do whatever you want to
To do whatever you want to
Here is where I lay it down
Every burden every crown
This is my surrender
This is my surrender
Here is where I lay it down
Every lie and every doubt
This is my surrender
Shake up the ground of all my tradition
Break down the walls of all my religion
Your way is better
Your way is better
Shake up the ground of all my tradition
Break down the walls of all my religion
Your way is better
Your way is better
And I will make room for you
To do whatever you want to
To do whatever you want to
And I will make room for you
To do whatever you want to
To do whatever you want to
And I will make room for you
To do whatever you want to
To do whatever you want to
And I will make room for you
To do whatever you want to
To do whatever you want to
Here is where I lay it down
You are all I'm chasing now
This is my surrender

It’s OK If Your Team Loses | AS BOLD AS LIONS DEVOTIONAL | October 21, 2022
Today’s Devotional - Friday October 21st
“It’s OK If Your Team Loses”
The testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. James 1:3,4
Question for today: If life has been a series of setbacks lately, how am I able to stay resilient and even see my faith deepening as a result?
Pray: Lord help me to change my perspective on trials. Help me to see them leading me closer to You and to trust You more.

God We Need You! | AS BOLD AS LIONS DEVOTIONAL | February 24, 2023
God We Need You! | AS BOLD AS LIONS DEVOTIONAL | February 24, 2023
LORD, I have heard of Your fame; I stand in awe of Your deeds, LORD. Repeat them in our day, in our time make them known; in wrath remember mercy. Habakkuk 3:2
We are seeing a lot happening lately in terms of renewal and an overall hunger within the Body of Christ; especially amongst young people. I believe the hopelessness of this generation has led to a yearning for something deeper and something real. In recent weeks, the altars at several Christian colleges have been filled with students crying out to the Lord. It has been remarkable to see them openly weeping and falling on their faces in worship. It’s a move we have not seen in many years. And it seems to be happening spontaneously all over this land as the Spirit moves.
What will be the result? Time will tell. It may be that we do not see immediate change and transformation but a gradual turning of the tide, so to speak. It is amazing to think that a whole generation may be primed to hear the Gospel and they may be a people to draw us back to the Lord. I think of the words of Habakkuk 3:2 as I consider and ponder these things: do Your mighty works again, in our day O Lord! What You have done before, we believe You can do again! Let us pray with expectancy and with fervor: God we need You!
Question for today: As reports of revival surface, how am I readying my own heart for personal revival and renewal in the Lord?
Pray: God whatever comes of this move, let it bring glory and honor to You. You alone can heal this land.

Sometimes Faith Leaves Us Limping | AS BOLD AS LIONS DEVOTIONAL | September 12, 2022
Today’s Devotional - Monday September 12th
“Sometimes Faith Leaves Us Limping”
And he said to him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob.” Then he said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed.” Genesis 32:27,28
Question for today: What need am I contending for before the Lord today?
Pray: God just like Jacob wrestled with you and was blessed, I want to press in seeking your will and blessing as well.

So Much For Good Advice | AS BOLD AS LIONS DEVOTIONAL | May 12, 2023
So Much For Good Advice | AS BOLD AS LIONS DEVOTIONAL | May 12, 2023
His wife said to him, “Do you still retain your integrity? Curse God and die!” Job 2:9
One of the most interesting characters in the entire Bible is Job. In an instant, his whole life is stripped away. Virtually no aspect of Job’s life was spared: his family was systematically wiped out and his own physical health deteriorated with boils covering his entire body. The backstory to all of this was that Job was an upright man and the Devil believed he [Job] only trusted God because his life was good. Take away all of the blessings, Satan argued, and Job the man would reject and deny God. The bulk of the Book of Job is the ensuing conversation he has with his wife and friends in trying to figure out why such things have happened. Job knows his character is righteous, but most of the “advice” he gets is to simply admit he has some unconfessed sin, some error, and come clean before God.
From Job, we are reminded of a couple things. One, we know that bad things do indeed happen to good people. No one can claim to follow God and find a life of ease. Sin still reigns in this world and its effects still bring harm to the righteous. Second, there is a need to find good counsel when we are in the midst of a storm. In turn, we are to extend good counsel when others are suffering. Job’s friends and his wife proved of little worth when Job was most in need. We can take heed to the need to “stand in the gap” when others are facing difficulty and offer words that bring hope, not despair.
Question for today: Is there someone in my life who needs an encouraging word or a listening ear today?
Pray: Lord I know from Job’s example that rain falls on the good and the bad. Help me be a person who extends your grace today to someone in need.
