BLM Can't Sue Trump Over Lafayette Square; Schumer Blasts Republicans Over Voting Reform Bill
Top leaders from both sides of the aisle are exchanging barbs. That's after Senate Republicans blocked Democrats' election reform bill Tuesday, saying it infringes on state rights to run elections. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said, "What this is really about is an effort for the federal government to take over the way we conduct elections in this country." Democrats aren't giving up. They say this is just the beginning. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said "this vote was the starting gun, not the finish line."
A federal judge ruled that Black Lives Matter protesters can't sue former president Trump, former AG Barr, or other Trump administration officials. The group, backed by the ACLU, argue the government violated protesters' rights during BLM demonstrations. A report from the Department of Interior's inspector general debunked that theory. Park police cleared the square to set up fencing after riots and protests in the area. And they only cleared the crowd after issuing three warnings.
And as for fears about inflation, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell is quashing those fears. In his congressional testimony Tuesday, he admits there's some inflation, but along with the central banks, he says the surge is tied to economic reopening after last year's lockdown. One area that remains nervous is the retirement sector. According to financial advisor at Best Small Business Loans Thomas J. Brock, "rapid price increases can have a destabilizing effect on an economy, and they can jeopardize hard-earned retirement savings." He has a number of suggestions on ways to avoid inflation.

12 GOP Senators Call on DHS Chief to Release Biden’s Immigration Overhaul Blueprint; Set Deadline
The Senate voting on a sweeping election reform bill. Democrats say it would protect voting rights. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer says "It's a vote on whether the Senate should simply debate the issue of voting rights, the crucial issue of voting rights in this country." But Republicans say it would be federal overreach. Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell counters by saying: “They've made it abundantly clear that the real driving force behind S. 1 is a desire to rig the rules of American elections permanently, permanently in Democrats' favor.” It's unlikely to get the 10 Republican votes it needs to move forward.
Debates around the border crisis continue. Over 50 House Republicans are calling on Biden to replace Harris as 'Border Czar.' 56 House Republicans noted Harris hasn’t yet visited the border amid a surge in illegal immigration. They also cited recent CBP data that shows that 180,000 people were apprehended last month after crossing the border illegally.
The Biden Admin reverses more Trump-era border policies. They just reversed two attorney general decisions made under Trump. They're known as LEA-2, and AB-1, AB-2. it changes how migrants can get asylum. Attorney General Merrick Garland issued a new directive to immigration judges to stop following the two rules. This means it is now easier for migrants to secure asylum if they claim they face domestic violence or gang violence.
And Nebraska is sending troops to the U.S.-Mexico Border to help law enforcement there. The governors of Arizona and Texas asked 48 states for help at the U.S.-Mexico Border. Soon after, Florida answered their calls. And now so is Nebraska. On June 19, Governor Pete Ricketts announced Nebraska will send around 25 State Patrol troopers to Del Rio, Texas later in June.

Texas Becomes Second Amendment Sanctuary State; Mark McClowskey: 'Not Backing Down' on Gun Rights
President Biden is meeting with Afghanistan's president this week, as U.S. forces leave the country. Afghanistan’s former president, Hamid Karzai, said he thinks the country will be better off without the U.S. and NATO's military presence. While the Afghan side is friendly, not so with Iran. Iran's president-elect turns down a Biden meeting, instead demanding the U.S. lift sanctions.
On the topic of guns, Colorado and Texas are taking two different approaches. Both states signed a slew of bills into law. Colorado's aim at gun control. One law allows cities to set their own gun regulations. The NRA meanwhile says this will create a confusing patchwork of laws that are difficult to follow. And Texas becomes a second amendment sanctuary state. Texas governor Greg Abbott said while people say their second amendment rights are being infringed upon, "Texas will not let that happen."
And as for the issue of healthcare: the Supreme Court has rejected some Republican states' legal challenge to Obamacare. They say it didn't meet a procedural standard. Biden called it a win for Americans. But not everyone agrees. Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), said in a statement “The failed Obamacare system will stagger on as a result of this decision,” He added: “Every American’s health care has been harmed by Obamacare.”

'Human Guinea Pigs’: 117 Hospital Employees Argue Against Vaccine Mandate; Judge Dismisses Lawsuit
The producer price index just surged a record amount, stoking inflation fears. Put together with the previous eleven months... It amounts to a 6.6% rise since last May. That's the largest twelve-month increase on record since 2010. This comes as a billionaire hedge fund manager says he's keeping a close eye on what the Fed is going to say.
A hospital in Texas is at the center of the debate around vaccine mandates. Over a hundred employees filed a lawsuit, but the district judge dismissed it. Now they're appealing the dismissal. The plaintiffs argue that through the vaccine mandate, the hospital was forcing employees “to be human ‘guinea pigs’ as a condition for continued employment.” The hospital system, meanwhile, thinks the employees are endangering their patients by not getting the shot.
And a rural Nevada county passed a resolution declaring that it will defend citizens against unconstitutional acts by federal or state authorities. The declaration springs from a movement to protect American’s constitutional freedoms. G7 nations pledge democratic alternative to China's Belt and Road initiative; Fifth Ocean Announced
G7 leaders covered a slew of topics at the summit over the weekend. G7 leaders have pledged to provide a democratic alternative to China's Belt and Road initiative. The summit also called for a transparent investigation into the origins of the pandemic. And they’re demanding that Beijing provide access to its labs. President Biden called on Beijing to abide by international rules. He said, “China needs to start to act more responsibly in terms of international norms and human rights and transparency." He's rallying U.S. allies to confront the Chinese Communist Party, or CCP’s economic abuses and human rights violations.
What brought China onto the world stage as a global power and how has that shifted in the wake of the pandemic? We sat down with Clyde Prestowitz, President and Founder of the Economic Strategy Institute and author of "the World Turned Upside Down: America, China, and the Struggle for Global Leadership" to find out more.
And there's now a fifth ocean. The National Geographic Society says the Southern Ocean will now join the Arctic, Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans to claim its place. The Southern Ocean is different in that it touches three other oceans instead of land. National Geographic Society Geographer Alex Tait explained to NPR that the other four oceans are “defined primarily by land masses,” while the Southern Ocean is different. He added “because it's so unique and because we want to bring attention to all areas of the ocean" it's become the fifth ocean.

Manchin met with civil rights groups on tuesday. he told reporters afterwards his stance remains unchanged. Manchin is the only Senate Democrat not to have co-sponsored the bill.

Press Secretary Jen Psaki said Capito's offer didn't "meet the essential needs of our country." Capito said she was "extremely disappointed" after their call, but said she doesn't think Republicans "played their hand poorly" in the talks. Biden is now talking to a different group with senators Sinema, Manchin, and Cassidy.

United Buys 15 Supersonic Jets That Can Slash Travel Time in Half; Biden Lowers Tax Hike to 15%
President Biden proposes creating a minimum corporate tax rate of 15% as a way to pay for an infrastructure bill. That's down from the initial 28% proposed. He also floats a plan to increase funding for the IRS to tighten tax enforcement. Initially set at 28%, the new rate is 15%. The Treasury department also discussed the global corporate minimum tax rate during a recent meeting with G-20 leaders, saying 15% should be the minimum.
The Justice Department will elevate ransomware investigations to a similar level of priority as terrorism. That's in an effort to defeat cyber-criminals threatening the nation. This comes after several recent cyberattacks targeted key infrastructure and industries in the United States. Ransomware hackers recently disrupted operations at the world’s largest meat supplier, JBS. And the attack on the colonial pipeline added to fears of gas prices rising.
And supersonic flights are on their way back to the commercial air travel market. United Airlines has agreed to buy 15 supersonic jets from Boom technology. Supersonic means faster than the speed of sound. It can slash travel time in half. This comes as supersonic startups focus on net-zero emissions and noise-muffling tech.

NY Gov. Cuomo's investigations fall on taxpayers; 25 states to end unemployment benefits early
Half of the U.S. states announced that they would end "federal pandemic unemployment benefits" soon. These governors are concerned that jobless benefits are keeping millions of American workers from getting back to work. This comes as a fed report released Wednesday, found that despite companies increasing salaries, there's still a shortage of workers.
The senate filibuster is currently the only thing stopping Democrats from dramatically and unilaterally reshaping the nation's laws. Is it set to change? Arizona’s Democratic Senator Kyrsten Sinema says the filibuster "protects the democracy of our nation" and supports keeping it. With Democrats controlling both houses of Congress and the White House, the filibuster is the only tool Republicans have to influence or block legislation. And it's the only thing stopping Democrats from passing their entire agenda without any Republican votes. The Filibuster requires 60 votes to end debate in the Senate, so at least 10 Republicans senators have to join with all of the Democrats to pass most bills.
And taxpayers are footing the bill to pay for New York governor Andrew Cuomo's defense. That's as he faces a slew of scandals. Taxpayers are set to foot the bill for a $2.5M contract for lawyers representing Governor Andrew Cuomo's office. That's for the ongoing federal investigations over the way they handled virus data in nursing homes.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken is marking his first trip to central America by saying the U.S. wants a shared commitment with those countries on migration. Blinken says the U.S. is preparing a $4B aid package to help countries in the region meet the challenges of "irregular migration."
Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a disaster declaration, in response to the humanitarian crisis. It comes the same day the Biden administration formally ends the Trump-era “Remain in Mexico” policy. Abbott said “President Biden’s open-border policies have paved the way for dangerous gangs and cartels, human traffickers, and deadly drugs like fentanyl to pour into our communities.”
And according to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, or EEOC, businesses can require that their employees get the COVID-19 vaccine without violating federal laws. This comes as West Virginia is the latest state joining in the push for vaccinations. Governor Jim justice announcing those who get the vaccine will be entered into a sweepstakes to win custom guns or $1 million dollars.

MLB Sued for Moving All-Star Game Out of Georgia; Lawsuit Accuses Google of Tracking W/O Permission
Major League Baseball is facing a lawsuit for moving the All Star game out of the peach state earlier this year. A small business lobbying group, The Job Creators Network filed the suit. It's asking MLB and the union to compensate Georgia businesses that won’t see revenue from the game. County officials estimated the move would cost the local economy some $100M.
Questions around privacy. New documents submitted by Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich raise questions about the way Google handles users’ location data. They point to Google tracking users' location even when location tracking has been disabled on smartphones.
And Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg says the clock is ticking on the infrastructure package. He said on Sunday, if the two sides don't reach consensus soon, the Democrats might go it alone again. That's how the $1.9 trillion Covid relief package was passed.
