If there's one group of people that are over-represented in the Dad Starting Over world and our DSO Fraternity group, it's anxious men... or more specifically men who exhibit anxious attachment issues within their marriage. They tend to, unfortunately, match up with very avoidant women. The men are always chasing, and the women are always running away or putting up roadblocks between them. The man is in a constant state of worry about their relationship, and the wife couldn't seem to care less. Receiving a genuine compliment from someone is relatively rare and VERY appreciated by men. When we get those little doses of love and appreciation from our wife, it means the world to us. It's not uncommon for men to say that they just don't feel content without being in a serious relationship with somebody. They feel lost. In other words, they have been conditioned over time to become dependent upon a long-term relationship for their mental health. That is not good. As a man, you need a more diverse life of friends, hobbies, interesting, career, etc. Ironically, the more you don't NEED a relationship, the more likely you are to find one. The infamous American Time Use Survey showed that the happiest subgroup of people were... *drumroll*... single women without children. Is that a shock to anyone? Really? I talk to men on a daily basis who have wives who completely changed (in a negative way) after the birth of their children. Raising a kid is stressful! If you're anxiety-prone or suffer from depression, having a child is a good way to add fuel to the dysfunction fire. Yes, women tend to suffer more from anxiety and depression. How many of us men can say that we REALLY changed after marriage? The stress and domesticity of married life just extinguishes the spark that we used to have as a single man. We aren't energized.
