After being spooked by Libra, the IMF is scrambling to help governments around the world fast track their Central Bank Digital Currency initiatives. The IMF envisions a vast network of interoperable blockchains which will host these CBDCs. ⚖The FED and CBDCs⚖ Although over 80% of the world’s central banks are planning to develop a CBDC, the United States Federal Reserve has repeatedly stated that it has no plans to develop a CBDC. This is odd given that the US dollar is the world’s most popular currency – it is the world’s reserve currency. It might be possible that one of the reasons why the FED has no plans for a USD CBDC is because something similar to one already exists. 👀USDC = CBDC?👀 USDC is one of the top stablecoins and is the fastest growing stablecoin. Circle, the company which created it, joined forces with Coinbase in 2019 to create the Centre Consortium which focuses around the development and adoption of USDC. The Centre Consortium has been explicit in its intentions to work with governments around the world to provide the technology required to build CBDCs. Both Circle and Coinbase have also worked closely with governmental authorities in the United States, suggesting that USDC may be a precursor to the USD CBDC which will eventually be rolled out by the FED. 🔗CBDC Blockchains🔗 Governments and central banks around the world have been looking for the best blockchains for their future CBDCs. They are considering both private and public blockchains, including cryptocurrency blockchains. Given that cryptocurrency blockchains are probably much more efficient due to the intense competition in the space, it seems possible that they will triumph over other private sector alternatives. The fact that Celo and Stellar were asked to speak as panelists with the IMF further supports this possibility. 💰CBDC on Stellar?💰 During the recent IMF panel, Stellar CEO Denelle Dixon stated that Stellar is looking to provide blockchain services for the purpose of building CBDCs, and noted that USDC is the “glue” required to build CBDCs. USDC will be launching on Stellar in January 2021. In addition to speaking at the MF panel, Stellar co-founder Jed McCaleb also once shared the stage with Michael Warner, a member of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. During this discussion, Michael turned to Jed and asked him how he would build a CBDC on Stellar. 🕵️‍♂‍CBDC Conspiracy🕵️‍♂‍ Taken together, these facts suggest that USD CBDC will be built on Stellar using the Centre Consortium’s USDC stablecoin technology. This is assuming the January 2021 launch goes well. In the meantime, the United States may be benefitting from the increasing dominance of stablecoin use in the cryptocurrency space. There are also stablecoins pegged to denominations of precious metals like gold. Stablecoins have been controversial. Many in the crypto community believe that stablecoins have been used to manipulate Bitcoin’s price. Both Tether and USDC work closely with law enforcement and have a history of freezing wallet addresses which were suspected of being involved in criminal activities. You’d also be hard pressed to find a single stablecoin which has maintained a perfect peg during times of high volatility. Despite these concerns, stablecoin share of the overall market cap of the crypto space has been growing exponentially over the past year. 🖨Recent Stablecoin Printing🖨 The market cap of the 8 largest stablecoins has grown from 5 billion to over 22 billion over the last 6 months. Most of this growth has come from Tether, which went from a market cap of 4.5 billion to nearly 17 billion during this period. There appear to be two distinct surges in stablecoin printing over the last 6 months. The first wave of stablecoin printing seems to have begun after that flash crash in March and continued until early July. 📉Stablecoin Volatility📈 When demand of stablecoins is high, clever traders can sometimes sell a stablecoin for slightly more than its peg. This is because people want stablecoins so badly that they are willing to pay a small premium to protect against further losses in the cryptocurrency they are desperately trying to sell. The opposite happens when demand for stablecoins falls. If everyone is trying to sell their stablecoins at the same time to buy into Bitcoin or another cryptocurrency, the sudden flood of supply can drive prices slightly below the 1 dollar peg they are supposed to hold. 😨Stablecoin Manipulation!?😨 There doesn’t appear to be any tangible evidence that stablecoins can be used to inflate the cryptocurrency market. This is all comes down to another factor which separates stablecoins from the fiat they are pegged to: redeemability. The two largest stablecoin issuers, Tether and USDC, actually allow you to redeem your tokens for real US dollars. If the price of USDC was to drop significantly due to a sudden spike in supply, this means that someone could buy up a bunch of USDC at a discount, go over to Circle’s website, and demand their 1-dollar peg. As such, the amount stablecoins you see in circulation are, in theory, necessary. Stablecoin supply is fundamentally an indicator of demand for cryptocurrencies as a whole and not an indicator of market manipulation. 👮‍♂‍Stablecoin Concerns👮‍♂‍ Stablecoins make US dollars readily accessible to anyone with an internet connection. This threatens the stability of foreign currencies because the moment they start to lose value, their citizens can easily accelerate that devaluation by selling their native currencies for US dollars. One of the most recent and largest of these was SAFT sales. The SEC asserted that this was an illegal token sale and they told Telegram to give back the 1.3 billion. They also had to pay a fine. The SEC also took issue with the Kik ICO where they sold KIN. Kik decided to fight the SEC all the way to court and the judge eventually ruled in favour of the SEC. This was one of the first times that a judge used the Howey rule against an ICO. You then also had the pretty big action that happened over at BitMEX where they were charged with breaching the bank secrecy act. This resulted in both the SEC and the CFTC bringing actions and arrest warrants being issued for the founders. There were also issues raised around potential sanctions violations. 🤔 Shutting Down Decentralised 🤔 Although you may think that it is decentralised, very few of these protocols and dApps are fully 100% decentralised. This basically means that there are centralised areas of control that the authorities could target should they want to bring it down. Firstly, there are "God Keys" that these developers could target. These are keys that are controlled by developers which will give them control over the protocol and which means that they could shut it down. Assuming that the developers are out of reach of the authorities then they could also shutdown the frontend of the site. These will have to be hosted on either a bulletproof hosting platform or on IPFS. This could make it a lot harder to shut these guys down. Even if the regulators cannot shut down a dex, they can make it hard for people to use them. This is because they can restrict exchanges from allowing any users to send funds to the exchange if they have used a DEX at any point. This is because it is quite easy to track incoming transactions. 🎯 Which Dex's Are a Target? 🎯 Uniswap could be a potential target. This is for a number of reasons. Firstly, they are the largest Dex on the market with the most trading volume. This means that Uniswap can and in fact has been used by some people to launder crypto funds. Then of course there is another aspect to Uniswap that could raise the ire of the SEC. That is of course that UNI token airdrop. There are many that were musing that this could fall a foul around the rules of regulated security issuance. Another dex protocol that could be a target is Synthetix. For those that don't know what it is, it's a defi protocol that allows user to trade tokenized synthetic representations of other assets (crypto, fiat, commodities and stocks). This was no doubt a major concern for the developers themselves and was one of the main reasons that they moved to dissolve their foundation last year. They began their steps to a full decentralisation operating on a DAO model. I don't think that any sort of regulatory action is likely on either of these protocols though. Essentially, they want to develop a distributed file storage protocol that is immutable, secure and transparent. This network will allow users to buy storage directly from those who are providing it and pay for it with Filecoin's native token. Conversely, it also wants to give storage providers the opportunity to earn additional income from unused storage space. ⚙️ Technology ⚙️ Filecoin is built on top of IPFS. IPFS is an open source Peer-to-Peer filesharing system that was initially released back in 2015. With the IPFS, instead of having all the data stored on a singular server, user-operators on the network will hold a portion of all the data. Distributed hash tables or DHTs will spread the data across this network of computers. The Filecoin blockchain takes IPFS and builds a storage marketplace on top of it. Here, you have users and you have miners. Those miners who provide more storage and are able to provide the content to clients the quickest, get more mining rewards - essentially an incentive mechanism to minimize latency and maximise bandwidth. When it comes to consensus, Filecoin uses a unique method called (QUOTE) Proof-of-Replication. This consensus method verifies that every copy of the file is stored independently. 💰️ Token 💰 Filecoin is the native cryptocurrency on the Filecoin network and it is used as a utility token for paying for storage, retrieval and transactions. There will be a maximum supply of 2 billion Filecoin. That will be released according to a similar schedule as Bitcoin Filecoin had a massive ICO in 2017 that saw them bring in a total of $205 million. This is even more impressive when you consider that they had taken in $52 million which was on top of $52 million they raised from accredited investors. These tokens were sold in a SAFT sale which is a Soft Agreement for Future Tokens. When the tokens are minted, 30% of this will be allocated to the Genesis block whereas the remaining 70% of it will be left as mining rewards. 👨‍💻️ Team, Partners & Development 👨‍💻 The company behind Filecoin are Protocol labs which is the same company that developed the IPFS. The founder of Protocol labs is Juan Bennet. He studied computer science at Stanford and founded Protocol labs back in 2014. The project has raised funding from the likes of Union Square Ventures and Andreesen Horowitz. For development, there has been a great deal of activity which can be verified in their GitHub repositories. The Testnet was just launched and they are looking to a mainnet launch in March of 2020. 📈 Trading & Wallets 📈 The token has not been minted yet so it is not trading. You can buy futures on the open market although these are at less reputable exchanges. Many of the headlines we see today are almost identical to the ones we saw back then, and most of the statistics cited by today’s and yesterday’s crypto climate critics all come from a single source. This source is an academic article published in 2018 to nature’s climate change journal. It argues that emissions from Bitcoin mining alone could increase the global temperature by 2 degrees. When you consider Bitcoin’s comparatively small energy consumption on the global scale, the numbers from this article don’t add up. ⚡Bitcoin Mining Energy Use⚡ Nobody is actually sure how much energy Bitcoin mining uses. The University of Cambridge estimates it could be anywhere between 40 and 440 terawatts per year. For context, the Netherlands uses 121 terawatts of energy per year, Argentina uses 300 terawatts, and the United States uses a whopping 4000 terawatts. Bitcoin is not a country, it is a financial system, and when you compare apples to apples, cryptocurrency offers the most energy efficient financial system in the world. ☀Green Energy Bitcoin Mining☀ Cryptocurrency mining has accelerated the growth of green energy. This is because miners go to where power is the cheapest, because cheaper power means more profits. As it so happens, renewable energy sources like wind, solar, geothermal, and hydroelectric cost half as much as coal and natural gas. While the University of Cambridge estimates 40% of all Bitcoin miners use renewable energy, recent statistics suggest this figure could be as high as 70 percent. 👀The Real Cause Of Climate Change?👀 In his book ‘The Price of Tomorrow’, Jeff Booth argues that the common denominator in the world’s environmental woes is actually inflation. Eventually, the Monero core team decided to fork the code and with it begin the Monero journey. ⚙️ Technology ⚙️ The two key components of Monero's tech are its Stealth addresses and ring signatures. With a stealth address, Monero allows a sender to create a one-time public address for every single transaction on behalf of the recipient. However, the recipient can still use a single address that receives all incoming payments. Monero has implemented these ring signatures into their transaction protocol. It will make use of your private key along with a ring of possible other signers on the network. Monero does not have opt-in privacy. Everyone is required to use the private transactions by default. Monero is a proof-of-work cryptocurrency and up till very recently, it used to used to use the Cryptonight hashing algorithm. However, on the 30th of November there was an upgrade that moved to the RandomX algorithm. Monero is a cryptocurrency that is tryign to keep up the fight against ASIC mining machines and has been adapting its code in order to render these devices moot. This is great news for GPU miners. RandomX was also optimised for CPU mining. 💰️ Token 💰 The native currency behind Monero is XMR. This coin was released without any ICO, pre-mine or founder's fund. It sits comfortably in the top 20 of market cap rankings and has the highest market cap of any other privacy coin. It currently has a circulating supply of just over 17 million. There is no max supply as there will be tail emmission of 0.6XMR indefinetely from May of 2022. 👨‍💻️ Team, Partners & Development 👨‍💻 Monero is a completely open source project with a wide array of developers working on it. There is a core team of developers working on Monero. One of the most well known of these is Riccardo Spagni a.k.a fluffypony. As an open source project, Monero has to rely on donations from the public in order to fund new initiatives. This is done through their Community Crowdfunding System or CCS. There has been quite a lot going on in Monero Repos over the past two years. On top of the forks that were done to stave off the ASICs, there were a number of improvements and optimisations. These include such updates such as bulletproofs as well as the work taking place on Kovri. This is a C++ implementation of the I2P network. 📈 Trading & Wallets 📈 Monero is a pretty popular cryptocurrency. It does well over 100 million dollars a day in daily trading volume. It is listed on a platforms such as Binance, Kraken, Huobi, Bittrex etc. It also does a whole host of volume on some lesser known offshore ones. All they have done is maintain their purchasing power, which is arguably what they’re designed to do Historically speaking, equities i.e. stocks have massively outperformed inflation and this is mainly because the gains from gold and BTC can’t be compounded year over year the way dividends can That said, Jurrien highlights the fact that Bitcoin has the potential to offer much higher returns than any other safe haven assets 🤑Altcoins Through A Fidelity Lens🤑 Tnstitutions seem to like cryptocurrencies that have a lot of demand and user growth, robust tokenomics (a maximum or deflationary supply), and the ability to generate some sort of cash flow, ideally a cash flow that can be compounded 💱How Bitcoin Could Replace Bonds💱 Jurrien is a big proponent of the 60/40 rule – 60% in equities, and 40% in safe haven assets including bonds, gold, and now Bitcoin. Back in Homna’s day, these candlesticks were drawn out by hand, and over time he noticed the same price patterns would pop up over and over. The price patterns he identified back then continue to be seen today, and this is because they fundamentally reflect patterns of human emotion, namely fear and greed. 👴The Wyckoff Method👴 When every trader is relying on the same patterns and indicator it makes it very profitable for someone to come in and disrupt the market by pushing the price above or below where people expect it to go. This is what Richard Wyckoff noticed over 100 years ago while working on Wall Street alongside financial titans like JP Morgan and Charles Dow. Like Honma Munehisa, Wyckoff saw that this institutional composite man would create the same four price patterns with his buying and selling behavior 📈Wykoff Accumulation Price Pattern📈 As the name suggests, the whole purpose of the accumulation phase is for institutions to buy as much of the asset within a price zone where the average investors and trader is paralyzed with fear. 📉Wyckoff Distribution Price Pattern📉 As the name again suggests, the distribution pattern is meant to make it possible for institutions to sell large amounts of crypto while keeping retail interest high through occasional price manipulation 🔎Wyckoff Patterns In Bitcoin’s Price🔎 As you might have guessed, the recent drop we saw with Bitcoin seems to be characteristic of Wyckoff’s distribution price pattern printed by institutions Another crypto YouTuber called uncomplication noticed this distribution pattern almost a month before the crash. To quote uncomplication, the primary goal of the distribution pattern is to exhaust demand 🕵️‍♂‍What Happens Next According To Wyckoff?🕵️‍♂‍ Unfortunately, there is no way of knowing for sure how long this accumulation phase will last, but if the previous bull market is anything to go by, we should be back on track in the next couple of weeks As I mentioned in this week’s crypto news update, you could potentially use Bitcoin dominance as a de facto measure of market greed If Bitcoin dominance is low like it is now, that means people are still greedy enough to be holding lots of altcoins This is a problem because it could send a signal to institutions that there’s more retail money left to be drained from the crypto market ~~~~~ 📜 Disclaimer 📜 The information contained herein is for informational purposes only.
