This is a video showing the heartaches of a repair job turning into a restoration. A 1970 Plymouth Duster was brought to me for damage caused by a tree falling on it. But one things lead to another and another, rust was showing up everywhere. Previous work in the past was done all wrong and I was the lucky guy to get to fix it all. The customer was happy with the car in the end but I really do not feel this was one of my better jobs.
Special thanks to the band Parcol for the music track in this video.

How to replace right motor mount 06 KIA Optima
https://rodsshop.org/get/auto-mechanic-pro/
This is a really quick video showing where and how to replace the right hand motor mount on a 2006 KIA Optima 2.4L 4 cylinder engine. In this video I show how to support the engine to get the weight off the motor mount so it can be removed with ease. There is a total of 3 bolts and a nut that has to be removed and the motor mount lifts straight out. The job can be easier if you remove the engine top cover and take the 3 nuts off the power steering reservoir and pull it to the side. The whole job should not take more than 10 to 15 minutes provided you do not run into any rusted and stuck bolts.
This motor mount runs anywhere from $180 to $240 from local suppliers, you can order it here for around $35 -

How To Pack A Wheel Bearing

This is a very quick video to show how to pack a wheel bearing with the palm of your hand. I prefer packing a bearing this way because you can ensure the grease is being pushed correctly and thorough through the bearing. However I do mention a grease packer that you can buy as well as a bearing race seal installer set. I will supply the links to those below. There are a couple of extras in this video like how to drive a bearing race in and how to install your grease seal.

How To Remove and Replace a Radiator Support

How To Remove and Replace a Radiator Support
See how to remove and replace a radiator support in general. A 1996 Honda Accord was mainly used to demonstrate how to perform this task. Most radiator supports are welded in and have to be cut out and welded back in. Most all car radiator supports are welded in and this often deters your Do-It-Yourselfers from tackling this type of job. Now granted, not everyone has a welder and that can be a big factor of not wanting to try it but most tool rental places rent MIG Welders and that is what you would need to do this job.
Replacing fenders and hoods are really not that hard as long as you have something that is straight and lined up to bolt them to. The hardest part about replacing a radiator support is cutting the welds. First you have to find and identify all the spot welds you will need to cut out. Then there is the physical work itself. Most radiator support have at least 20 welds that have to be cut out and this can get monotonous and tiring.
I will show you how to find spot welds in this video, once you learn how to find them, you have to determine if it is the weld that needs to be cut out. You will find many spot welds in the radiator support itself but many are from construction of the support and not the ones that weld the support to the inner fender apron panels. I show you in this video that the welds you are looking for are going to be on the right and left side of the support, you will rarely ever see any welding done in the middle. I am providing a link in this description where you can get a Free PDF that also shows with pictures How To Remove and Replace a Radiator Support. I am also providing links to the tools you would need to R&R a radiator support. Even if you bought all the tools you would need to do the job yourself, you would still end up spending less than paying a shop.

How To Fix Peeling Clear Coat Truth Revealed
https://rodsshop.org/auto-body-paint/
How To Fix Peeling Clear Coat Truth Revealed. People are looking for a quick fix to peeling clear coat but sadly there is no quick fix. This is a demo of many so called fixes out there, so you will see what doesn’t work and what does. This is the truth on how to fix peeling clear coat.
https://rodsshop.org/auto-body-paint/
In these examples I will show peeling clear on a VW Beetle rear bumper and show testing of some of the craziest fixes on an old hood. Understand, there is no quick way, no magic fix, no spraying WD-40 tricks or any non-sense like that to fix or repair clear coat peeling. The only way to fix peeling clear coat is to re-clear it. There are a few things and sort of tricks you can do before clearing it but if your peeling clear coat is excessive, then you have to sand and feather it back smooth to where you can't see or feel an edge. If you are looking for some magic quick fix, there isn't one. The best thing I could tell you to do if you just don't want it getting any worse or rusting is to shoot clear in the peeled and faded areas. However this is not the correct way to fix it and it will look like crap and not last long.
This video goes over some steps it takes to fix peeling clear coat, I am using a 2002 VW Beetle and an old hood with plenty of peeling clear as my demo. I will show you many of the methods that are just not going to work. This subject has brought forth many scam type or misleading products and way too much incorrect information.
If you would like to know how to tackle a paint job like this either as a one-time project or if you are considering making auto-body a serious hobby or even considering auto-body a profession. You can now learn this trade and all the secrets of getting an eye popping finish from your own home and not even at a fraction of what a school would run you. I am promoting two different courses. One is great for a simple project and can put you on your way of painting like a pro, the other is a very in-depth course and can teach this skill as a new trade. Check these out:
For materials used and guides, follow these links:
https://rodsshop.org/auto-body-paint/
https://rodsshop.org/automotive-resources/
I will first show you the typical and most common example of peeling clear coat on the 2002 VW Beetle rear bumper. I will get into the one method that is out on how you can scrap the old clear off with a razor blade. Scraping automotive paint with a razor blade is a complete wrong way method and shouldn’t even be considered. You can scrape paint on a house or shed but keep in mind those are wood structures and doesn’t have a high gloss finish that will show every scratch and imperfection in it. I then will show you on an old hood off of a collision repair job, some of these mad methods in action and show how they will not work and explain why. In conclusion I will talk about how going through the correct stages, you will get a factory looking and long lasting repair job.
The correct procedure to fixing peeling clear coat is as follows: Sand and feather back the peeling clear and sand it back a good distance from the peeling areas to ensure you are back to well bonded base coat clear coat. If at all possible, try not to sand too much through the base color if you intend to just sand, spray base color and clear it. The more color you leave, the better your base coat will cover using less coats. The best job you will get is to spray a urethane primer over the sanded areas and sand it to give you a really nice level and waveless finish. Then spray your base color, blend over the undamaged colored areas if you can to get a great color match. Then clear coat, usually with at least two coats of clear.

How To Replace Wheel Bearing Hub and Rotor 92 99 Suburban 2500 4WD
How To Replace Wheel Bearing Hub and Rotor 92-99 Suburban 2500 4WD
https://rodsshop.org/online-auto-repair-manuals/
Normal brake jobs can be aggravating but to do a front brake job on a 92 to 99 4WD Suburban or any ¾ ton GM’s in that year range can be a nightmare. See just what you have to go through just to remove the rotors…
If you found this video valuable, give it a like.
If you know someone who needs to see it, share it.
Leave a comment below with your thoughts.

Most vehicles have what is known as slip over rotors, even the heavier vehicles are going that route in more up to date times. If not slip over rotors, they have rotors that the hub assembly is made into them, these are the ones you normally pack the wheel bearings on.
For many of these ¾ ton vehicles, especially 4WD GM’s between 92 and 99, the rotors are pressed in with the hub assembly. In this case the studs are what press the rotor onto the hub assembly.
In order to remove the rotor you have to remove the rotor and hub assembly together by removing four bolts that run through from the back of the spindle. These bolts use a 15mm socket. You have to remove the 36mm CV Shaft nut from the center on the hub, then the four bolts mentioned above, then you can pull the whole unit away from the spindle.
This method can also be used if you were replacing the CV shaft as well. Caution, if you were to disconnect the lower control arm on this type of vehicle, you will need to carefully place a jack under the control arm as this setup uses a torsion bar and it is connected to the lower control arm. If not done properly, the arm could kick down well below a point you will not be able to jack it back in place.
It is recommended to change out the hub assemblies if the vehicle has over 100K miles on it. On the Suburban in this video, this was the case so replacing them made the most sense. If you do have to buy a hub assembly, try and get one that comes with new studs. I spent a lot of time cleaning the old ones up to ensure that the lug nuts threaded properly.
A job like this can be a whole lot easier with a good manual. However it isn’t always easy to find a good manual that is really detailed enough to make the job faster and smoother. Peeling Clearcoat on Bumper Repair Quick and Easy
https://rodsshop.org/auto-body-paint/
This is a short video showing the basics and the easy steps of sanding a bumper that had peeling clear coat and scratches. Then masked off and painted. This whole job took about 2 hours to do, there are videos saying you can do what you will see here in ten minutes. There may be a way to do it in ten minutes but good luck on the paint sticking..LOL
I will lay out the steps here. wash the vehicle or at least the bumpers and the surrounding area so that the masking tape will stick. Mask off any trim you don't want to scratch when sanding. Sand the scratches out and feather back the peeling clear is any by sanding. Sand with 400, possibly 320 for rougher areas but finish it off with 400. Re-mask your trim if damaged during sanding and then mask off the rest of the car.
Use a drop cloth over the entire car that isn't going to be painted. Be sure that there is no way the spray gun can blow up under the drop cloth, it will get overspray if you're not careful. Then use a midcoat adhesion, one even medium wet coat will suffice. Then spray your base color if you are using a base coat clear coat. I get asked how many coat of the base color, well the answer is as many as it takes to cover what you are spraying over and when you think it looks good, then apply one more coat. Worst case scenario would be 8 coats and that would be if the base has a lot of pearl or like spraying whit over red.
Then spray two to three coats of clear. Take your time, don't get in a hurry and get down at different angles to catch the light on each coat to see what your orange peel looks like. If you have achieved the same texture as what you are matching on the second coat, stop there. On this car, it turned out really nice so no buffing was required but if you do have to buff, wait till the next day before you do. Also remove all the masking about an hour, no more than two after painting. If you wait too long, the paint will become hard leaving hard jagged edges where the tape line was.

How to Replace Front Brake Pads and Rotors on a 2004 Mazda 6
https://rodsshop.org/get/auto-mechanic-pro/
This is a video to go over how to change out your front brake pads on a 04 Mazda 6. It will show some basic fundamentals on things you should do no matter what make or model car you are replacing the front brakes on.
Hanging a caliper by the brake hose:
I have had some comments on here on how you can’t hang a caliper by the brake hose, so I wanted to write a little on this. You will find about 90% of mechanics will hang a caliper by the brake hose but these are experienced and true mechanics. Only inexperience, done a few brake job type people are the ones that are going to freak out about it. Now let me tell you why you can and when you shouldn’t hand a caliper by the hose..
If the brake caliper is made of aluminum and it is small and provided that the brake hose isn’t in a twist or bind and can dangle straight and unobstructed, then you can hang it easy. You do not drop it, you don’t let it fall off if you have placed it up on top the spindle or on the control arm. If the caliper cannot be placed or hung in a place that is out of the way and will not be hit or pulled on, then you will want to tie it up with mechanics wire. Some people say use a bungee cord but that may not hold it tight in place and if it falls, it still could yank on the hose.
If the caliper is huge or made of cast iron like on trucks or older cars, then you must tie the caliper to something with mechanics wire. If the hose has a twist or already has a bend in the hose, then you CANNOT hang it. Best practice is to not use a bungee cord unless you wrap the caliper tight to something with it.
When I made this video, I didn’t think about that step because of doing brake jobs for over 40 years, this is just common sense to me. This is a step I know to take without thinking about it or freaking out about it. So for all you smart-alecs that just feel the need to tell me how to do brakes jobs, this not should save you the time and effort. These videos are for people that are just trying to learn or trying it for themselves for the first time. If you are a pro brake job guru, why are you watching these videos anyway? Just to throw some negative comments out there?

This is just an introduction to showing that RodsShop also ventures into other kind of painting. In this video you'll see the transformation of a scratched up and rusted 753 Bobcat turn into a decent looking little machine.
Using a DA sander with some 80 grit and 180 grit sandpapers, I feathered out the scratches and roughness and then treated all the rust with a rust converter. Using the rust converter served two purposes, one to get rid of the rust and two to serve as a primer. I also used primer over the bad areas. I used Nason Enamel with hardener, I had it matched to Bobcat colors which they already had the numbers for it. The black is a semi-gloss black I have my paint store mix up special for me but the look is really nice.

The body was in decent shape, there were a few minor dents and dings but nothing really bad. It was harder finding them with the original paint so flat. Most all of the clear had to be sanded off, the only clear that was left was towards the bottom. The clear at the bottom was still very thick and very tough to sand off.
The whole car was put in a urethane primer and block sanded twice, then sealed and painted. It took very little to color sand and buff, the paint job came out better than factory.

It is always important to look over any car you are thinking of purchasing regardless if it is new or not but when considering buying a used car, ignorance can cost you some big bucks. Not to say that people selling a used car is out to swindle you because often they do not know the signs an engine is bad.
The first thing you should do is start with the visual inspection of the engine and the engine compartment. Notice how dirty or clean it is, look for oil or fluid residues anywhere and everywhere. An engine that is heavy in oil film on top of the motor could mean a leaky valve cover gasket. Fluid residues on the firewall or the inner fenders could mean the engine has been spraying oil, coolant or some other fluid and that is not a good sign.
Pull the oil cap off and look to make sure it is cover with some oil and not dry, because a dry cap could mean the engine is run low on oil often or that it has coolant in the oil drying the oil up on the bottom of the cap. You also want to make sure the cap isn’t covered with looks like a chocolate milk shake. If there are signs of this, you are looking at most definitely an engine that has coolant mixed in the oil and this is a strong indication of a blown head gasket or a crack in the head or block.
Be sure to look under the car, more specifically at the bottom of the engine to see how oily it is and to see any signs of any type of fluid leaking. Smell the exhaust pipe for excessive odor of raw gas, burnt oil or coolant…
