THIS VIDEO CONTAINS INTENSE FLASHING OF LIGHTNING, NOT SUITABLE FOR LIGHT-SENSITIVE GROUPS An intense severe weather outbreak occurred on August 24, 2023 in Central Michigan, particularly in areas surrounding Grand Rapids and Lansing. These storms produced at least 7 tornadoes and wind gusts in excess of 80mph in some spots. This video documents what we witnessed in this outbreak. An explosive severe thunderstorm environment will be in place across Lower Michigan, and development will occur this evening provided that a capping inversion will likely weaken ahead of an incoming cold front. These storms will be capable of significant damage with wind gusts possibly exceeding 75mph. This cold front will essentially end the dreaded heat wave across our region. A record-breaking heat dome is surging across the Midwest and will push into the Great Lakes on Wednesday. Widespread heat alerts have been issued across the region with the expectation that they will expand through Thursday. The edge of this heat dome will settle over eastern Michigan on Wednesday, fueling all-hazards severe weather if the capping inversion does not inhibit convection. A prolific ridge will surge and strengthen across the Plains during next week, causing a stagnant air mass to bake over much of the CONUS, including the Great Lakes Region. In some places, heat index values will surge past 110, depending on humidity that comes along with the ridge. Heat will likely be strongest Tuesday-Thursday, especially in Indiana. This heat wave will be followed by potential for thunderstorms, which will be closely monitored due to model disagreements. A series of upper-level troughs may bring severe weather to the Great Lakes Region multiple times next week. Friday's potential appears to settle in during the late afternoon/evening hours, with eyes on further severe potential Monday across Ohio. Long range models hint at a ridge surging into the Great Lakes, bringing what may be some of the hotter-end temperatures for the region during this summer. CHASE MODE ACTIVATED- Models now point to a MCV continuing from Missouri to Indiana and arriving by early afternoon. This MCV will bring tornado potential to areas between the I-70 and I-74 corridor. A seasonably strong upper-level trough will move from the plains region into the Great Lakes on Sunday. There are still a few questions regarding the track of this low, but supportive wind shear will favor severe thunderstorms with tornado potential, damaging wind potential, and hail potential.
