Great Lakes Weather

Friday is a lower severe chance, but Sunday's setup needs to be watched carefully. A severe weather event will likely unfold somewhere in the Great Lakes Region on Sunday. Current questions remain on timing and location. After a system brings us a chance for some severe weather in the form of damaging winds and hail, a powerful low pressure system will move into an environment of high instability and high shear for Sunday afternoon. Recent ECMWF and NAM models depict a northward shift in the favorable shear, with NAM being quite bullish on instability. Expectation is that the threat will likely shift a little further south, however the Great Lakes Region should be on careful watch for this event upcoming on Sunday afternoon.

A gradual warming trend will continue through the weekend bringing our temperatures into the mid-80s, with some in the Great Lakes feeling close to 90 degrees. Tuesday appears hot and humid prior to the arrival of a low pressure system. Current model outputs predict potential for damaging wind over hail and tornadoes. The active weather that occurs Tuesday will have a role in impacting weather to come on Wednesday, that might produce additional severe weather potential across the Great Lakes Region as well.

A severe weather episode may unfold across the Great Lakes Region on Tuesday and Wednesday as an upper level trough brings a burst of energy into the Great Lakes Region as early as Tuesday afternoon. Some model differences exist on timing and location, but signals for an impressive severe weather environment have continued for several past runs. Hence, this video and future videos will cover this setup up until the point the event occurs.

A severe weather outbreak currently ongoing to our west will be key to watch for potential for the same ingredients associated with it to move into the Great Lakes Region on Saturday. Currently, some questions exist regarding the strength of a capping inversion that may inhibit thunderstorm development along a frontal boundary moving across Northern Illinois, Southern Wisconsin, and Northern Lower Michigan, but storms that end up initiating in the area will have potential for all severe hazards, including tornadoes if models continue to trend in the same manner. Following a low potential for severe thunderstorms in Ohio tomorrow, An upper-level low off the coast of California today is expected to bring severe weather to portions of the Central Plains on Monday. This same piece of energy will then lift its way towards the Great Lakes. The evolution of the low's strength and track between now and Tuesday will have heavy determination on the scope of the severe weather threat during Tuesday in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana and even possibly Wednesday in Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio.

An active stretch of weather is ahead for the Great Lakes Region over the next 10 days. Tomorrow, the threat for severe weather presents itself mainly across eastern Ohio with tornado potential. Models indicate a favorable environment particularly along the Ohio/West Virginia border Thursday afternoon. After a quiet weekend, eyes turn to a pattern in which the upper-level jet settles over the Great Lakes Region, bringing multiple days of potential for showers and thunderstorms, as well as some possible severe weather next week.
