Welcome to the Science Of Mindfulness - The Adventure Of A Lifetime How changing your brain, changes your life. Originating within the world wisdom traditions. And now as you'll hear verified through modern science, mindfulness refers to paying attention to whatever arises in our experience, in the present moment, whether in response to thoughts, feelings, emotions, or bodily sensations, when we are present to our experience, in an open accepting and non-judgmental way, we are practicing mindfulness. This introductory program on the Science Of Mindfulness, is designed to provide you with a taste of what science has discovered about mindfulness, and its scientifically demonstrated potential, to help us live in a way that is more open joyful, and compassionate. We begin our program with Jon Kabat-Zinn, author of Mindfulness For Beginners, with an introduction to the many benefits of mindfulness in our daily lives. 01:30 So let's begin at the beginning. What is mindfulness? My working definition of mindfulness, is that it's paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, as if your life depended on it, non-judgmentally. Actually mindfulness is what comes out of paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally, and as if your life depended on it. And that is nothing else, than awareness. 06:23 For close to 30 years now, my colleagues and I, at the University Of Massachusetts medical center's stress reduction clinic, have been using mindfulness within mainstream medicine, as a profound resource, for people facing stress, pain, illness and disease, who find that they don't receive full satisfaction, from their health care and medical care, who you could say, fall through the cracks of the healthcare system, and actually a lot of people fall through the cracks of the healthcare system, and don't get full satisfaction. So the idea of the stress reduction clinic, is to challenge people to see if there's not something that they can do, for themselves, as a compliment to whatever their doctors, and surgeons, and the health care system as a whole can do for them, to move towards greater levels of health, and well-being. And when I say health and well-being, I mean on the deepest and broadest of levels, so that ultimately has to do, not just with the health of the body, or with getting people back to some kind of socially acceptable normal state, but what the true extent of being human, actually is, and coming to know the mind intimately, and to be able to use it in ways that actually cultivate the wisdom, and deep qualities of compassion, and goodness that lie within us. This work, which has spread to clinics and medical centers and hospitals, around the world in the past 10 plus years, is known as "mindfulness-based stress reduction", or MBSR. But again, that doesn't mean that they're just for people who are experiencing disease or chronic pain. These practices are universal, and really are applicable for anybody who is alive. We do not have actually a great track record with the dead, but as long as you're breathing, from our perspective, there's more right with you, than wrong with you, no matter what's wrong with you. Hi I'm Darren, and I'm here with Nisreen, and I'm gonna ask her a couple questions about her online business. Nasreen when did you start your online business, and what did you do before? What do you do now? If you're still working? Hi Darren, I started my online business in March of 2017, so it's been just over three years. And before I started, I was a server for many years, about 23 years, so mostly restaurants. And ten of those years I was in the hotel industry as well. And also an actor, and that's the one part of my life that I still do now, and that's part of the reason, like those two reasons combined, were the reason why I started this in the first place, was to get out of hospitality for good. Because it was quite doing a number on me physically, and I was just tired of it, and also to have more flexibility for my growing, acting career. And what would you say is your favorite thing about this online business, and how has your life changed as a result? It's really hard to pick one favorite thing, because there's so many perks to it obviously, but I would say obviously, you know just having something to call my own, and in every kind of spectrum what that really means. And you know the concept initially going in, like owning my time, I didn't really know what it actually felt like day-to-day, and that has just been the biggest blessing. Like just being you know, in control of you know my schedule, my timing with everything, just the satisfaction of, this is mine, and I get to have that empowerment, in tackling my goals and my achievements, and whatnot. Sorry my cat is chiming in. And I would say all of that, equaling to the the no stress that I have, like being able to lay my head down at night, knowing that you know, financially and timewise, and all that stuff is just, those things are not an issue. You know for me, it means so much to be able to make sure that my agent can count on me to attend every single audition I get, and nothing will ever get in the way of that. Oh how has my life changed? Just more of that I guess, it's, it's been very empowering. My confidence has definitely gone way way up. Obviously to have that, just that time flexibility and all of that the breathing space, you know, that financially all of that is just more than I ever could have imagined. And I would say also just the people. I didn't imagine that I would be able to just, be in contact with so many people, all over the world. And what they've taught me, including you guys. Well my two-year anniversary is coming up in July, so July 2018 is when I started in this business. And before that. I was a licensed realtor. And what is your favorite thing about this business, and how has your life changed since you're almost two years in the business now? Oh I hope you have some time, so many things, oh my gosh, I bought my my dream vehicle, which is a Jeep, a brand new Jeep. I bought a brand new condo, in one of the more expensive cities in Canada, in the Central Okanagan, in a high-rise building. So you can see my backdrop there is gorgeous. Paying for braces for my son coming up, private tutoring for my son, I've been able to help my daughter out, and all because of this business, which is of course, as we all know, taxable income. So it's just it's been so amazing. And so is that your favorite thing, that you're able to help out your kids, and do some? Well, yeah helping out my kids, and then also just having independence right? Like having my own place, and having my own vehicle. You know, I used to stay up at night, you know staring at the ceiling, worrying about retirement, and financial security, and it's just not an issue anymore. I just don't have to think or overly budget, and I'm not a huge spender, but before it was like just making sure that everything worked by you know, having a budget in place right? And now, I just I don't have to budget anymore. Which is amazing. I started the business April, 2019, so that was exactly one year ago exactly this month. And what was your background before getting into this? I was an electronics engineer, by profession, so I've been working for several multinational companies for over 20 years, the last 20 years. Oh wow, are you still working now? Not anymore. You're just doing this? Yes, I'm doing this full-time now. Great, and what would you say is your favorite thing about this business? Yeah my favorite thing is the flexibility that I have, because I have been wanting to quit my job for a long time now. And doing this business for nine months, I was I was able to do that, so I am flexible my with my time. I'm just working around my family commitment, which is the most priority at the moment. So yeah having that time freedom, is the favorite thing doing this business. And other than quitting your job, which is amazing congrats, but how would you say your life has changed because of this business? Oh it has yeah, aside from quitting my job, which the biggest change, I was also able to give back more to the community. I have more time now right, so I can give back more of my time to the community and also share my blessing to others, helping families that's in need as well. And also the personal growth that I have doing this business, it's the most important thing for me as well. I have yeah a basically different person in good terms right? So yeah the change that I have is very very, important. It's an important point, and you know people always forget to mention that, because I talk to a lot of people, but you know Mike and I see people transform, literally it's like caterpillar to a butterfly in this business. Hi I'm Darren, and I'm one half of Darren and Mike, and I've got Paul and Helena here with me and I'm gonna ask them a couple questions about their online business. So when did you guys start your online business? It was September 5th, was it, of 2016. 2016 so it's like what, almost four years? Four years yeah. And what did you guys do before? I was a owner of a trucking company for since 2004. I've trucked my whole life, but I bought my own company back in 2004, until I retired in 2018, of March. I was opposite world. I was working in like you know, an accounting office. I had my own clients later on, when I decided to take my business and do a different, you know more self-employed type of style. So yeah, always worked in finances. And I used to be a postie as well. And so both, neither of you do those jobs now, now you only work with your business. Nope! So I sold my truck in February of 2019, so all gone. Right, and what is your favorite thing about this business. And how has it changed your life since? Oh, I want to get that one first. So, since Paul no longer has that trucking business, my life has completely changed. We used to spend like months apart at a time. And we would travel like you know, we would be in totally different circles right cuz you know, what's the accounting got to do with trucking right? And I never understood anything he said and stuff like that, but anyway so I have him home now. That is probably, probably my favorite thing. You're home. You're not gone for months at a time. No actually it was, it's pretty hard in a marriage, being gone all the time. But my favorite thing about this business is the overhead costs. Being in trucking, I've had some months you spent 10 grand, some you spend 30 grand. This business has next to nothing for overhead costs. So my margin went from this down to this. So that's the best thing that I can say about this, is the overhead cost is, there's nothing. There's a lot less stress For you. A lot less stress, you have nothing to worry about. You just worry about yourselves, you know. Well thank you guys for that and for being here with me today, I really appreciate it. So when did you guys start your business? In March of 2018 actually, so we've been doing this now for just over two years. And what did you guys do before? Or are you still working? Well with the time and the freedom that we get from working online, like I said we have four young kids, and so just being able to travel, we went on twelve trips last year. We went to Mexico, all six of us went to Disneyland. So just being able to travel, and do whatever we want, whenever we want. And just be able to take our business with us, it just runs in the background. And how would you say, what's the biggest change in your life, like how would you say your life's changed since you started two years ago? I'll answer that because, I think it's affected from what I can see just being, having Chrystal at home with with us as a family, has been night and day. She's changed, she's so much happier than she used to be, and just the time that we have together as a family I think. I started my business in October of 2018. And what I did before, I was the regional sales manager. I had a corporate job, and I traveled all over Western Canada in the insurance industry. So I had targets and pressure, and I was away every single, not every single week, like every other week, I was away Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, BC, it was a lot. I take it you're not doing that anymore? No, that's actually you know one of my favorite parts of the business is, that I was able to quit my full-time job, last year. Because I was just gonna ask you, what's your favorite thing, and I was going to ask you also, how has your life changed so far since doing this business? So many ways, I mean it's been you and, you and Mike have been so patient with me. I had zero online experience when I started, and like all of the techie stuff, like it really is just, you know, you just follow along. And you had so much patience, and gave me the time to explain things to me. And that I'm helping other people. And of course the money. And I paid off debt, I've been on multiple vacations, I took my dad on a dream vacation to New York City, I've helped my brother, like there's just been so much. And also the learning, the ongoing learning, and that we do it together. You're never alone. And, and then we've also met up. I've been able to hang out with you guys a lot more face-to-face, even like Mexico, San Diego, Texas, like it's been great. Oh that's awesome, thank you for giving me two minutes of your time today. So Rawan, tell us how long have you been in the like, have you had your online business, and what did you do before? Hi everybody! My name is Rawan. I'm a stay-at-home mom. I'm originally from LEBANON, and I moved to CANADA almost 10 years ago. Before this Online Business, I used to change diapers pretty much. Before I had kids I used to work in the restaurant, for two years. That was the regular 9:00 to 5:00. I didn't see a future in it. So when I got pregnant, I decided to stay home with my kids and raise them. And of course, just like any parent out there, I wanted to have the time and financial freedom to be able to raise them, and at the same time earn an income. But my problem was that I didn't finish University. And in our community you know how it is - that you must finish University! The biggest thing is that you won't have a decent job that will actually allow you to have that financial freedom. So with everything that's happening online, I was like there has to be something that I can find and learn from scratch. And this is where I came across this amazing community. So you've been doing this how long now? It's been two years. What would you say is your favorite thing about this business, and how has your life changed because of this business? The favorite thing about this business is, literally right now with everything that's happening with the whole pandemic, I'm with my kids, in our brand-new house, in the city. And this is the best thing is that I'm able to be with them, buy the things that we want, which is this house that I'm in right now, and at the same time not worry about bills and not worrying about the things that I always used to worry about before this business. As an immigrant here in Canada, we take care of our parents, we take care of our loved ones. And that was my biggest thing. I didn't want to worry about that part. And right now I am so happy and excited because I'm able to be with my kids in the house that we always wanted. Like I've never Darren, in a million years thought I would be able to afford this kind of house. But we made it happen, with of course consistency, with patience, with lots of perseverance. I was able to get to get to where I want to be. And best, best, best thing ever is that I've been living here by myself for ten years with my husband, and raising my family by myself. Right now, I'm actually sponsoring my parents. I already did, to come to CANADA, my mom, my dad, and my brother. And I didn't have to worry about the expenses getting them here or finishing the paperwork. I don't know if you know about that, but it does cost a lot to get your parents or anyone sponsored over here. Right now I'm not worried. After this whole pandemic is done, they're actually coming to Canada, and they can actually self isolate in this house. I'm going to be in the other house that I have in town. So I don't even have to worry about those tiny details. It's awesome I love what you said about patience and perseverance because so many people are always looking for a get-rich-quick! This is not a get-rich-quick! But a brand-new house in two years is pretty amazing! Thank you for sharing that with us Rawan!
