"Curly Bill & Johnny Ringo's Headquarters: GALEYVILLE" (18Apr2024) Faces of the Forgotten
THIS STORY: Galeyville was named after John H. Galey, who was an oil man from Pennsylvania. The town had a very short life, it only lasted 2 years. The post office was established January 6, 1881 and discontinued May 31, 1882. When the town died, scavengers moved in quick and took everything. The smelter was moved to Benson and many of the buildings were relocated just to the south, to the town of Paradise. Galeyville once had 500 residents, but then in short order, was no more. The town today would be all but forgotten, if not for being known for the headquarters for the likes of some infamous outlaws. This was the headquarters for Curly Bill Brocious, Johnny Ringo (Ringgold), and many other badmen who are listed below. It was a perfect hideout for stolen cattle, so they lived among the miners and made this their retreat and hideout. "Natchez City Cemetery, Natchez, Mississippi - May 2020" (27July2020) Cities Of The Dead
After several years of saying I want to visit Natchez, Mississippi, I finally venture to the river city as Mississippi begins to open up. I was not prepared for the stunning beauty of this town, sitting atop a hill over looking the Mississippi River. Neighborhoods filled with Victorian Homes, and a downtown that is a time capsule for a bygone era of Southern America. I was left speechless as I entered Natchez City Cemetery. Perched upon a hill and surrounded by trees, the cemetery ground are enormous. Graves stretching as far as I could see; I was wholly unprepared for how much I needed to film in the short amount of time I had at my disposal.
The first footage I shot of the cemetery was on my new DJ OSMO II, and the stability and flexibility it provided clearly shows. But I soon found myself encircled by lawn maintenance, and relocated to the oldest part of Natchez City Cemetery. After getting situated, I could not get the OSMO to respond, and I had to resort back to using my regular stick. I can't wait to get the hang of this piece of technology, because in just that little bit of footage I shot, the difference in quality is tremendous.
Additionally, I was unaware of my mic issues until reviewing later. Obviously, it was much too close to my face, and I've yet to figure out a solution for wind. That's on my checklist. I realize it sounds like I am dying, and my breathing is certainly not flattering - but I wasn't feeling particularly winded until I reached the back of the cemetery. I am clearly out of shape, and there were a lot of inclines that day... it was also a hot, May day in The South. Regardless, I apologize for the loud breathing.
Part of the delay in uploading this video is primarily due to personal reasons; I'll expand on that later; but also because this was the last cemetery I filmed and I have nothing in the bag. As the viewer, you are caught up with me. So, the pressure is on for me to get out there and film. This cemetery is massive, so I will be breaking up the footage over three or four videos.
Thank you for being patient, and I hope despite the audio issues, you enjoy this visit to a remarkable Mississippi cemetery.
