Play Japanese Super Famicom Games On US Super Nintendo!! NEStoration™ Region Free Mod Kit
In this episode, I share with you the completion of a dream where I have designed from the ground up a region-free mod tray for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System Jr, which will allow you to play both North American Super Nintendo games and Japanese Super Famicom games on a North American Super Nintendo Entertainment System thanks to the NEStoration™ Region Free Mod Kit I designed and am manufacturing.
When I got into 3D printing in 2021, there were three things that I wanted to design and print. The first was a set of Mickey Mouse wall hangers for the ears my wife, daughters, and I have collected over the years. The second was a storage case for Famicom Disk System Disks in their cases, with Diskun on the sides. The third item I wanted to create was a region-free mod for the Super Nintendo and the Super Nintendo Jr which would allow me to play imported Japanese 16-bit Super Famicom games on a North American system. Thanks to SainSmart providing us with a SealLite handheld 3D scanner, and what I have learned over the last two and a half years regarding 3D modeling, I am proud to announce my NEStoration line of Gaming accessories and the first product under that brand, a region mod kit for the Super Nintendo. Let's show you how to install this kit.
Please note:
The NEStoration region-free mod tray will only allow you to play Japanese games on a United States system. It will not allow you to play PAL European Super Nintendo games on a US system as they operate at a different frequency. This does not convert PAL signals to NTSC, this simply alters the existing cartridge slot.
Tools needed :
NEStoration™ SNES Region Free mod tray
4.3 mm game bit or security bit
Number 0 Philips head screwdriver
Disassembly:
The underside of the SNES features 6 4.3mm Security Bits you need to remove. You can remove them in any order, but make sure to set them aside in a secure place as you'll need them later. Once the screws have been removed, you can separate the top and bottom half of the cases. Set the bottom half of the case aside as you will not need this at this time.
Flip the top of the shell over so you can see the inside of it. There are Phillips head screws that you will be able to see. You will need to remove each of these screws that retain the stock cartridge slot. Before removing the stock tray you will need to remove the reset mechanism spring. Use a needle nose pliers or a set of tweezers. Remove the cartridge locking lever mechanism from the tray, you won't need this on the conversion. Carefully lift the stock component from the system. Before we are done with this, we need to remove the reset plunger. It has 2 tabs on either side of the channel that locks it into place. Gently squeeze these tabs to release it, and it should pop right out. From here, you are done with the original tray & will not need it anymore.
Begin the reassembly process by installing the reset plunger into the new NEStoration tray. While I do my best to ensure free movement of this piece before proceeding. Once installed, you can install this tray in your system. From here, you need to prep the region-free tray by installing the 2 included standoffs. These key into the bottom of the tray to ensure they don't spin when you reinstall the screws. Before placing them into the tray, pre-thread the screw holes to make installation easier later. Once the standoffs are in-place, you can screw the tray to the lid of your system. Once completed, you're ready to reassemble your console.
I am super excited that I was able to design and produce this.Let me know if this is something you would be interested in. Have you ever collected Super Nintendo games? Let me know in the comments.

People Need to Stop Freaking Out About Whether Xbox Hardware is Going Away
In this episode, we discuss the rumors swelling around that Microsoft is looking to potentially and production of Xbox consoles, and why in the end it really doesn't matter. Let's take a look.
The sky is falling! The sky is falling! Microsoft is going to stop selling Xboxes! They are going third party?! Yes, these are the rumors swirling around and Microsoft is not directly addressing them to quell people's fears or confirm the rumors. But in the end, whether Microsoft is making hardware or simply focusing on software, it really doesn't matter and doesn't change their business model a whole lot. Here is why.
Since its inception, Microsoft has been a software and services company, and hardware has never been their thing. Think back to when Windows really became a dominant force and how the machines that ran the software were named. Windows compatible. It wasn't a Microsoft PC. And until recently, Microsoft did not produce laptops or tablets. But they, themselves, aren't even making that hardware, they're having components sourced and built for them and they are slapping their name on it.
When I say Microsoft is a services company, the reason for that is simple from a business term. They are all about that residual income at this point. They would rather have people spend $16.99 a month for a Game Pass subscription than purchase a $59.99 physical disc for a game. The game purchase is one and done. That $16.99 is a recurring monthly, quarterly, or yearly expense that they get to rake in. As such, one game pass subscriber is financially more valuable to them than someone who buys a game or two a year.
Microsoft has been all about making Xbox content available on various devices for an extremely long time. When they launched Xbox on PC, they doubled down on it. They've also tested the waters and limited terms by placing some of their content on other manufacturers' systems, specifically the Nintendo Switch. While games such as Halo aren't there, games such as Super Lucky's Tale, Cuphead, & a few more have already made their way out of the system. And while they bought Minecraft, that's on everything. It's even on the PlayStation!
Another interesting thing about Microsoft hardware is it has never really maintained any sort of resale value. Much of this is because so much of the library is available to the generation that follows. With the Xbox Series S and Series X, you can play much of the preceding library from all Xbox console generations, but an interesting thing now is that you can play that library not only on the newest generation hardware but for the most part also on the previous generation hardware!
Microsoft has not divided the library for Game Pass between console generations. As such, you can play the latest Halo game on the Xbox Series S or Series X just as you would on the Xbox One, One S, or One X. You do miss out on graphical fidelity on the Xbox One Series compared to the Xbox Series X, however, you will have a very similar graphical experience on the Xbox Series S to the Xbox One X. As such, if all you're looking to do is play the games, it could be argued that an Xbox One X is a better gaming option currently compared to the Xbox Series S.
In the end, whether Microsoft makes game consoles moving forward doesn't really matter. Xbox gaming studios are what will matter. Xbox game pass is what will matter. As long as those things are still alive and well and kicking, you'll still be able to play your favorite Xbox titles, you just might do it on a different piece of hardware. As long as people are playing games and having fun, that's all that really matters. If there's a way that you can do so and not spend as much money, that is a great win in my book.

We SCORED a GRAIL GAME At the 2023 Illinois GameCon!
In this episode, we visit the 2023 Illinois GameCon in Bloomington-Normal Illinois where we sold a lot of stuff, bought a couple of things, made some trades, gave some folks a few gifts, and we received an award. Let's take a look.
For the last several years, we have participated in the Bloomington-Normal GameCon. We went first as shoppers, and for the last 3 years, we've actually helped our local store, Live Action Games, run their booth and sold products ourselves. This year, we once again shared our booth with Live Action Games, but we also shared part of our booth with Robert from Gaming off the Grid. This year also marked a slight name change for the convention, as it is officially the largest gaming convention in the state of Illinois it is now officially the Illinois GameCon.
I have been so busy lately, as you probably have noticed by the inconsistent uploads to the channel. As such, I hadn't even thought of things that I was looking for or hunting for at the convention. Looking back to what I was hunting for at Midwest Gaming Classic in April 2023, I wanted to see if I could find any of the Rock Man games for the Game Boy, and that was really about it. If something caught my attention I was of course going to give it some consideration but that was the main thing I was on the hunt for. It wasn't until later that I thought that I should see if I could find any Jaguar games. Dummy.
The setup for the show started on Friday afternoon. My oldest daughter and her boyfriend were actually with me as she made a number of crocheted characters and figures that she wanted to sell at the show. They have both been with me at Midwest Gaming Classic, but this was the first time they would actually be vendors at a show.
After set up, we headed back home, about 45 minutes away. There we waited for Kris from Game Dad and Jay from Square Pegs to show up. We met up with them At a local pizzeria and then headed back to the house to decompress and just hang out. I don't get many people down into the game room, but with both these guys coming I knew I had some gifts to bestow upon them.
I often mock Kris that he does not have a JVC X'EYE, and recently I traded for a second one. The idea was to give it to Jay, and while he appreciated it, he wasn't really excited about it. What he was excited about was my Sega Nomad which I received as a gift from Vorenge several years ago. I didn't play it, and since it was such a generous gift to me I didn't feel right selling it, so it got gifted to Jay. Kris, unfortunately, well I gave him the X'Eye.
As Saturday morning rolled around we were out the door before 7:00 a.m. as there was a VIP early entry to the show at 8:00 I needed to be ready for. We made final tweaks to our displays and got ready for the guest to come out in. Before the flood of people, I did have a chance to visit one of my favorite vendors who always has amazing import titles on his table. His brother has been in Japan for a number of years, which is where he is able to get great titles and send them back over here. I ended up picking up three games from him, Rock Man 3 for the Game Boy, Bonk's Adventure for the Game Boy, and a Grail that I never thought that I would own. He had the Japanese version of DuckTales 2, and the US version goes for silly money. I was able to bundle a few things, traded one of my LED lights that I sell, and we walked away with great deals on all three. In fact, these were the only three games I picked up all day long.
Around 1:00 Adrian and I had to go to the main stage to receive our 2023 Superstars of gaming awards from Walter Day. It's a bit surreal to think that I am now a member of an exclusive club that includes some of my best friends. I've also been able to talk with Walter quite a bit in the past, and I've always enjoyed his company. To be able to receive this was quite the honor and I really appreciate it.
Our final trade of the day came with one of our favorite people. He had a number of wood art an gaming signs that I was really digging, especially the Super Mario Bros one. He had come to our booth to check out our wares and wanted one of our TurboGrafx 16 LED signs. We worked a trade where he got one of my signs and I got one of his, and we were both thrilled.
We talked to so many people throughout the day at our booth, and we had a great time. I think my oldest daughter learned quite a bit about what it's like to be a vendor at one of these shows, not just a shopper. But she's already talking about going to the next one, planning to tweak her designs and make new ones.
Thanks to everybody who put on this event, it was once again amazing and has me excited to go to a few more conventions later this year I hope.

A) Like our prior releases, this game is region-free so long as it is compatible with the console.
Q) Does this run at 50hz on PAL consoles?
A) The game is multi-regional and can run at 60Hz (NTSC for North America) or 50Hz (PAL Europe

We love seeing Retro-bit continue to work on releasing classic games from the past so current generation gamers can get their hands on them and play physical copies at a reasonable price. They also put so much care and attention into these sets to ensure that those who have the physical originals don't see the value of their games go down. These both look amazing and for me, I am really looking forward to testing these out!

MUST-HAVE Switch Accessory! Unitek 8-in-1 Cartridge Switcher
In this episode, we unbox, evaluate, and test out the Unitek 8-in-1 Cartridge Switcher designed for the Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED.
Order the Unitek Switch Game Card Reader, 8-in-1 Cartridge Switcher for Switch/Switch OLED by visiting https://amzn.to/3ILwvy6
Save 10% when you use code RoXolid10
One of the things that's really annoying about physical media is the fact that you physically have to swap cartridges or disks in and out if you are going ahead and playing different games on a video game system. It's one of the things that I have to say digital does have an advantage over physical gaming, but there's a way to circumvent that, at least on the Nintendo Switch & Switch OLED.
The UInitek Switch Game Card Reader allows you to go ahead and have four games that you can swap between on your Switch, plus storage for four additional games so that way you can easily swap them in and out. The reader features a USB-C port and includes a USB-A to USB-C cable to for power. It also has a fairly thick ribbon cable that goes from the switcher to your cartridge port. Instead of going up and over the switcher I would have preferred if the ribbon cable exited the side of the case closer to the cartridge port. It's not bad, just a bit unsightly. Finally, there's a push button on the left side of the switcher which changes the game and color when pressed. I would like it a bit more if the LED would flash the number of times to respond to the cartridge port in use to help identify the game in use. I think that would be more helpful than the color changes myself.
To attach the switcher to your dock, it just uses a pressure fit to stay in place. On both my original Switch Dock and my Switch OLED dock the fitment was perfect. It slid on and was held securely in place without being difficult to remove if so desired. One thing that would be nice is if there would be a way for the unit to stand on its own behind the Switch to make it more convenient if and when using a 3rd party dock. Perhaps having legs that could swing out and stand behind the dock would be a solution?
Connecting the switcher's cable to the Nintendo Switch's cartridge port was a snap. Simply open the Cartridge Slot, insert the adapter, and you're good to go. Some people may not be thrilled with the looks of having the cartridge flap open constantly, and I get that, but for this level of convenience, it's a necessity.
I grabbed several cartridges and loaded up the Unitek dock with multiple games. One of the things that I was listening to and feeling for was the quality of the pins and if there would be an audible "Crunch" when the cartridges were inserted. There was not, the pins and mechanism operated freely and didn't have a death grip on my cartridges. I was very happy about this. I also loaded up a few games in the storage side of the switcher and wasn't as thrilled with this. The storage cartridges stick out further than the carts in the switcher mechanism. I wish they'd just be flush with each other for a cleaner overall presentation.
Once I had things loaded up I was ready to test. One thing that is a bit of a downside, at least on the Switch OLED Dock, is that you lose a USB port for other accessories if and when you plug this in. I'd like to have another USB-A port on there for convenience. That being said, this thing is magnificent. When I powered my system on, the game in Slot 1 showed up, just as it should. Then with each additional press, the other games popped on and off my menu. Just to see what it would do, I did press the switch cartridge button without closing the game. It gave me an error, the same as if I would have just removed the cartridge from the system without exiting.
Why It RoX:
- Allows you to use 4 cartridges with 1 Switch Console
- Compact
- Storage for 4 additional games
- LED Indicator for which game is in use
- Reasonably priced
What could be improved:
- Better integration with 3rd party docks
- Uses a USB Port, needs a pass-thru USB-A for other accessories
- LED should flash the number of the cartridge port in addition to changing color
- Storage ports stick the cartridges out further
Should you buy one?
This is about as close to a must-have accessory as I have tested out. I put this up there with Fixture Gaming S1 and S2 for my favorite accessories for the Nintendo Switch. While it does have some warts and areas where it could be improved, this is still an amazing device that I absolutely love. It works well, it works with both my Switch and Switch OLED Dock, and saves me from waddling up and down stairs to swap games. I have sent my suggestions to Unitek for some improvements, which I pointed out above, and I am hoping they take them to heart as this is a good accessory which could become truly great.

Why Does The Eon Gaming XBHD Original Xbox HD LAN Adapter Exist?
What do you do if you want to connect your original Xbox to your TV via HDMI? And what if you wanted to have a LAN party with original Xbox hardware? Well, towards the end of May 2023, the team over at Eon Gaming announced a new addition to their product lineup. They are calling it the XBHD, and it has a number of interesting features, but it raises a lot of questions too. Let's take a closer look.
Preorder the Eon Gaming XBHD at https://castlemaniagames.com/products/eon-xbhd?ref=RoXolid
One of the challenges with the original Xbox is the fact that you can't tap right into it and get an HDMI output. You have your multi connector which can output composite, component, and S video. Well, it appears that Eon Gaming is tapping into this port and providing you with an HDMI output. According to their own specs, it will output anywhere from 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i resolutions. This tells me that there is no line multiplication going on here. Unlike something like a RetroTink 2x or RetroTink5x, what you see is kind of what you get.
It seems like, connecting to your television, The XBHD is more an adapter of convenience than any actual video improvement. Now, this does feature twin HDMI outputs, so you can connect one Xbox to two different TVs to be able to have multiplayer fighting games for example, and each player gets their own television. I don't see the appeal to that, but at the same time, I'm not the biggest Xbox fan either.
Another interesting feature of the XBHD is the integrated LAN adapter and ethernet ports. It appears to feature three different LAN connection ports so you can go ahead and get your LAN party started. Interesting in theory, but in 2023 are LAN parties with original Xbox hardware that common? I don't know the answer to that question. I would think that if you would want to have the equivalent of an Xbox LAN party you would use either an Xbox 360, Xbox One or Xbox Series S or X and connect over the internet. A LAN party requires you to be in the same room, and is anyone really lugging around an original Xbox anymore? I don't know.
One interesting addition is an integrated 3.5mm MiniTOSLINK connector for audio. This is a very generational appropriate connector, but audio and video are both handled by HDMI so I don't know that there's a specific need for this.
In the end, for $190 I am not sure what market needs this is serving. I applaud Eon Gaming for doing something different, and I'm glad to see more love going to more retro hardware. I just don't know where this fits into the landscape of things. When you have the Xbox2HDMI adapter from Shepherd Electronics and things like these Xedusa from the Behar Bros that will get you to an HDMI connector for a fraction of the cost, it prices itself out of the market. I don't think going to HDMI is going to be the big winning feature here, I honestly think this is something that people who are going to set up and host land parties will get the most benefit from.
Let me know what you think of this in the comments, we are working on acquiring a sample for review. They are open for pre-order right now through the Castlemania Games website.

We Got Games for Nintendo Famicom, Sega Master System & PlayStation!
In this episode, we unbox and evaluate our latest blind draw box from Video Games Monthly.
Sometimes happy little accents happen, and while I meant to cancel my Video Games Monthly subscription after March and April simply because I was going to be heading to more conventions, I forgot to do so. Hence, we have a box for May 2023! What is Video Games Monthly? It's a monthly subscription service or you can have three, four, five, or ten retro video games sent directly to your door for between $34.99 to $79.99 monthly. You can select from retro systems such as the Atari 2600, Nintendo Entertainment System, and even import systems like the Super Famicom and the Famicom. For this month, I changed things up and added the Sony PlayStation to my list, along with the Sega Master System and a few other systems.
What we got:
System: Sony PlayStation
Title: Spongebob Squarepants: Supersponge
Value: $9
System: Sony PlayStation
Title: Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation
Value: $8
System: Sega Master System
Title: Marksman Shooting & Trapshooting
Value: $11
System: Nintendo Famicom
Title: The Goonies
Value:$14
System: Nintendo Famicom
Title:Kaihuu Monogatari
Value: $7
Total box value: $53
What do I think?
Well, for the 4th month in a row, I have to say that this was nearly a complete bust for me on a couple of levels. Kaihuu Monogatari is a JRPG, completely in Japanese, so not only do I not want to play it, I can't play it due to language barriers. I've told them in the past not to send RPGs, and it seems like not only one slipped thru the cracks, but it was a JRPG. I have no interest in Spongebob or Tomb Raider, and I don't own a CRT so the Marksman game is worthless. The only game of value to me here was The Goonies, and I am excited to play it.
When it comes to the condition of games, the discs definitely need to be run through a disc cleaner, especially Tomb Raider. The Master System game is in decent shape and just needed a 1Up Cleaning Card, but the 2 Famicom games both required a lot more attention. Goonies needed 3 Brite Boy treatments to get playing.
To clean a cartridge, you generally just need isopropyl alcohol, the higher percentage the better, and some kind of a cleaning applicator. Lint-free swabs work well, I use 1Up Cleaning Cards myself, but in a pinch, you can use cotton swabs. If you're going to use cotton swabs make sure that you don't leave any lint or dander behind.
For games with extreme signs of dirt, wear, corrosion, or worse, I utilize a metal cleaner called Brite Boy. A good friend of the channel @JohnRiggs likes to say that cleaning the pins on your games with Brite Boy is like resurfacing a disc. You're removing the dirt and the scratches, you're also removing a very small layer of the metal to the pins. What I really appreciate about Brite Boy is the fact it is not an abrasive and it doesn't leave that white residue behind like a Brasso can.
What did you think of this month's box? Have you ever done a video game blind box subscription service? Let me know down in the comments.
