Description: In 2007, California passed and signed into law AB 1471, the first legislation of its kind to introduce any sort of requirement on the microstamping of firearms. Microstamping is a ballistics identification technology that has been met with a lot of controversy. Since 2007, other states such as Maryland, New York, and right now, New Jersey have been trying to push microstamping legislation to make it a requirement for semiautomatic firearms as well as handguns. There have been some recent developments in lawsuits challenging the Biden ATF’s reclassification of firearm parts as firearms, as well as the ATF’s crackdown on law-abiding pistol brace owners. These cases are currently going through the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, and for some, the Supreme Court has even gotten involved. The Second Amendment Foundation (or SAF) demonstrated painstaking diligence in fighting these issues and have had a strong hand in the progress being made.
