Naturally Occurring Substance in Pomegranates Can Improve Alzheimer’s Symptoms
A substance naturally occurring in i.e. pomegranates, strawberries, and walnuts can improve memory and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, a new study conducted at the University of Copenhagen concludes.
Forgetfulness, difficulty finding words, and confusion about time and place are all common symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.
Now researchers at the University of Copenhagen have discovered that an ordinary fruit can help.
“Our study on mouse models with AD shows that urolithin A, which is a naturally occurring substance in i.a. pomegranates, can alleviate memory problems and other consequences of dementia,” says Vilhelm Bohr, who is an Affiliate Professor at the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine at the University of Copenhagen and previously Department Chair at the US National Institute on Aging.

Harnessing the Sun: Innovative Thermal Trap Reaches Over 1000 °C Using Sunlight
In the future solar energy could be used to produce cement or steel, instead of burning coal or oil for this purpose. Researchers at ETH Zurich have developed a thermal trap that can absorb concentrated sunlight and deliver heat at over a thousand degrees Celsius.
A new thermal trap uses sunlight to reach a temperature of over a thousand degrees Celsius.
The new technology minimizes heat losses making it possible to generate this high temperature efficiently
The approach could help to provide industrial plants with high temperatures and thus make these industries carbon neutral.
Industrial Heat Processes
The production of cement, metals, and many chemical commodities requires extremely high temperatures of over a thousand degrees Celsius. At present, this heat is usually obtained by combusting fossil fuels: coal or natural gas, which emit large amounts of greenhouse gases. Heating with renewable electricity is not an alternative, as this would be inefficient at these high temperatures. Although much of our economy and society will need to become carbon neutral in the coming decades, these industrial processes are likely to continue to be powered by fossil fuels for the near future. They are considered difficult to decarbonize.

The Frequencies of Cognition: Exploring How Our Brains Differentiate Sounds
A study shows our brains use basic sound rates and patterns to distinguish music from speech, offering insights to enhance therapies for speech impairments like aphasia.
Music and speech are among the most frequent types of sounds we hear. But how do we identify what we think are differences between the two?
An international team of researchers mapped out this process through a series of experiments—yielding insights that offer a potential means to optimize therapeutic programs that use music to regain the ability to speak in addressing aphasia. This language disorder afflicts more than 1 in 300 Americans each year, including Wendy Williams and Bruce Willis.

Vanishing Without a Trace: Why Stars Mysteriously Disappear From the Night Sky
Astrophysicists at the University of Copenhagen help explain a mysterious phenomenon, whereby stars suddenly vanish from the night sky. Their study of an unusual binary star system has resulted in convincing evidence that massive stars can completely collapse and become black holes without a supernova explosion.
One day, the star at the center of our own solar system, the Sun, will begin to expand until it engulfs Earth. It will then become increasingly unstable until it eventually contracts into a small and dense object known as a white dwarf.
However, if the Sun were of a weight class roughly eight times greater or more, it would probably go out with a huge bang – as a supernova. Its collapse would culminate into an explosion, ejecting energy and mass into space with enormous force, prior to leaving behind a neutron star or a black hole in its wake.

Cutting-Edge Phage Research Promises New Solutions for Old Pathogens
New research details long-sought mechanisms and structures.
Bacterial infections present major hurdles in both agriculture and healthcare, particularly with the increasing prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Researchers at Texas A&M AgriLife Research are investigating how viruses that infect bacteria neutralize these harmful pathogens, opening the door to innovative treatment approaches.
In their recent study published in Science, Lanying Zeng, Ph.D., a professor, and Junjie Zhang, Ph.D., an associate professor, both in the Texas A&M College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, detailed a precise mechanism by which phages disable bacteria.

Johns Hopkins Scientists Solve 30-Year Biological Mystery of Night Blindness
Johns Hopkins scientists identified how the G90D mutation in the rhodopsin gene causes night blindness, offering potential therapeutic targets.
In what they believe is a solution to a 30-year biological mystery, neuroscientists at Johns Hopkins Medicine say they have used genetically engineered mice to address how one mutation in the gene for the light-sensing protein rhodopsin results in congenital stationary night blindness.
The condition, present from birth, causes poor vision in low-light settings.

Challenging Classical Physics: Surprising Properties of Elastic Turbulence Discovered
Revealing elastic turbulence shows more similarities to classical Newtonian turbulence than previously expected.
Blood, lymph fluid, and other biological fluids often exhibit unexpected and sometimes perplexing characteristics. Many of these biological substances are non-Newtonian fluids, defined by their nonlinear response to stress and strain. This means that non-Newtonian fluids do not always act in ways typical of liquids. For instance, these unique fluids might change shape under gentle pressure yet behave almost like solids under more intense force.

Scientists May Have Discovered an Achilles Heel for Hepatitis B
The hepatitis B virus (HBV) is tiny, dangerous, and highly contagious. It chronically infects approximately 296 million people and claims about 1 million lives annually. This elusive virus targets the liver, often remaining symptomless until it leads to cirrhosis or cancer.
Most treatments try to inhibit the virus’s polymerase (pol) protein. But those treatments are lifelong and not curative. Now researchers from the lab of Rockefeller’s Charles M. Rice have revealed never-before-seen mechanisms that may lead to new therapeutic approaches for HBV. They published the results in Cell.
“The current inhibitors can mitigate the infection but can’t eradicate it,” says Bill Schneider, a research assistant professor in Rice’s Laboratory of Virology and Infectious Disease, and senior author on the paper. “Basic science can provide new insights and lead to different strategies. That’s why we went back to the drawing board to learn more about this virus.”
