A story of domestic family life upended and fractured by inconceivable events which seem, even now, both far away and close at hand. The story begins in the spring of 1992 in the city of Sarajevo, as political tensions are mounting and barricades begin to appear in the streets. Fifty-five year old Zora is married to Franjo, who is fifteen years older than her. Her daughter lives in Wiltshire, England. Zora’s vocation is her work as an artist, notably a painter of landscapes and the bridges that span the river of her beloved Sarajevo. She teaches art students, but in the afternoons retreats to her studio high in the eaves of the city’s magnificent public library to work on her canvases. When violence finally spills over, Zora sends her husband and elderly mother to safety in England to stay with her daughter. Reluctant to believe that hostilities will last more than a few weeks, she stays behind to paint and teach while the city falls under siege. War does not come suddenly: it creeps. Familiar daily life collapses slowly by degrees - first the phone is cut off, then the electricity and finally the water. As the assault deepens and everything they love is laid to waste, black ashes floating over the rooftops, Zora and her friends are forced to rebuild themselves, over and over. Stephen Hawking once warned us that our species could soon be wiped out by plagues, asteroids and our tendency to destroy ourselves. The solution, he suggested, was for us to colonise other planets. But Chris Larner and David Gilbert's sci-fi comedy drama sees the truth as being a little more complicated. Set in the year 2150, Arnold and Gregor work as planetary decontaminators via their own firm, AAA Ace Eco-Friendly Interplanetary Decontamination. Their job is to clean up polluted planets to make them habitable for humans. One such place is Planet Party, where several space tourists have died when landing there. With a big cash award given to anyone who can clean it up, it looks like Arnold and Gregor might do the deadly job. However, they soon get side-tracked by an alien music box they buy cheap from Joe the Interstellar Junkman which discharges a strangle liquid that dissolves anything it touches. It’s not long before the 87th floor of a skyscraper in Streatham starts to melt, followed by London, and ultimately the entire Earth. Paul Dombey is the owner of Dombey and Son, a successful shipping company. The wealthy business owner dreams of having a son to take over the family business one day. He neglects his first child, a girl, because she is not the boy for whom he had hoped. Dombey’s wife dies shortly after giving birth to his namesake son. This leaves both his newborn son and his six-year-old daughter, Florence, motherless. Dombey hires Mrs. Richards, whose nickname is Toodle, to serve as a wet nurse to Little Paul. Little Paul Dombey grows into a frail child who is often sick. For his health, his father sends him to the seaside city of Brighton, which does him good. The Charge of the Light Brigade John Osborne’s unperformed screenplay of the famous Charge of the Light Brigade at the battle of Balaclava in the Crimean War encapsulates all the grandeur and folly of war. Nothing in British military history has ever equalled the tragic farce that was the charge of the Light Brigade. John Osborne’s screenplay captures the spirit of this military disaster in which the fatal mismanagement of the events rested with the Earls of Cardigan (Charles Dance) and Lucan (Sir Donald Sinden), brothers-in-law and sworn enemies for more than thirty years. The fatal message for the troop to charge was carried by Captain Nolan (Joseph Fiennes) and the whole scene was witnesses by the Commander in Chief, Lord Raglan (Alec McCowen) and General Airey (Geoffrey Palmer) from the heights above the battlefield. The radio version opens in London with Osborne (Michael Feast) himself writing the screenplay and setting the scene (taken from Osborne’s own directions) in which the characters and situation emerge whereby this giant folly occurred. Anthony Berkeley was a journalist, novelist, and founding member of the Detection Club - whose members included Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Harold Pinter was born in London in 1930. His career as a playwright began with a production of The Room in 1957. His second play, The Birthday Party, closed after eight performances but was enthusiastically reviewed by critics. His early works were described by critics as "comedies of menace". Later plays such as No Man's Land (1975) and Betrayal (1978) became known as "memory plays". His writing career spanned over 50 years and he produced 29 original stage plays, 27 screenplays, many dramatic sketches, radio and TV plays, poetry, one novel, short fiction, essays, speeches, and letters. He appeared as an actor in productions of his own work on radio and film, and directed nearly 50 productions for stage, theatre and screen. Despite frail health after being diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in December 2001, Pinter continued to act on stage and screen. In 2005 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature and, in the same year, the Wilfred Owen Award for Poetry and the Franz Kafka Award (Prague). Pinter’s last performance was in October 2006, in the title role of Samuel Beckett's one-act monologue Krapp's Last Tape, for the 50th anniversary season of the Royal Court Theatre. In 2006 he was awarded the Europe Theatre Prize and, in 2007, the highest French honour, the Légion d'Honneur. He died in December 2008.
