The Navy Lark Series 1 Episode 4 The Fairground Lights
Air Date:
19th April 1959
There's an old adage that you should be content with your lot. However, if you're the Admiralty and your lot is a right mob on an island off Portsmouth, the last thing you'll be is content. Anxious, terrified, panic stricken possibly but content? No! In fact, your only hope is to keep them occupied 25 hours a day with extra duties when things get desperate.

THE SECRET DIARY OF ADRIAN MOLE 13¾ by Sue Townsend / Ken Howard / Alan Blaikley
The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13¾ is the first book in the Adrian Mole series of comedic fiction, written by English author Sue Townsend. The book is written in a diary style, and focuses on the worries and regrets of a teenager who believes himself to be an intellectual.[1] The story is set in 1981 and 1982, and in the background it refers to some of the historic world events of the time, such as the Falklands War and the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana as well as the birth of Prince William.[2] Mole is a fierce critic of prime minister Margaret Thatcher, listing her as one of his worst enemies.
Apart from the humorous events described in the diary, a lot of the book's humour originates from the unreliable narration of Mole, who naïvely, yet confidently, misinterprets events around him.

The Navy Lark Series 1 Episode 3 Number One's Chair
Nowadays, ordinary daily shopping seems to get more and more expensive. Fortunately for a Naval Detachment on a small island off Portsmouth they never have to go shopping - they just indent from stores. And they claim, with some justification, that no other unit makes a bigger dent in the stores than they do. But that's only one of the complaints of the Inspecting Officer from Portsmouth.

A Day By The Sea By N.C. Hunter
A Day by the Sea
Written by N.C. Hunter
Adapted by Mollie Greenhaigh
The loves, hopes and fears of a Dorsetshire family are brought together and revealed over a few short hours in the course of a day by the sea.
With Wendy Hiller and Michael Hordem.
Laura Anson: Wendy Hiller
Dr Farley: Michael Hordern
Frances Farrar: Barbara Leigh Hunt
Julian Anson: Richard Pasco
David Anson: Alan Wheatley
Miss Malhieson: Elizabeth Kelly
William Gregson: Ronald Herdman
Humphrey Caldwell: Fraser Kerr
Elinor: Jane Whittenshaw

N. C. Hunter has been called ‘the English Chekhov’, and this delicate, poetic, autumnal play captures a Chekhovian sense of loss, shattered ambitions and personal isolation, but amongst a distinctly English group of characters. Set in Dorset after the Second World War, A Day by the Sea is both gently comic and profoundly tragic . . .

The Receiver of Wreck by Ben Cottam

The small town - part failed seaside resort, part former fishing port - has awoken to find a rusted old ship washed up on its silting estuary. Jen Green, The Receiver of Wreck, arrives to find rumors sweeping the town as to just what the boat might be. From pirate radio station to pirate ship, Russian spy vessel to a gunrunning shipment to the IRA - no theory is too maverick as to what the strange ship might have been…

A Decent British Murder by Ken Whitmore
A rather amusing yet thrilling BBC "locked room mystery" radio play.
It's Christmas time. Colonel Grace is hosting a dinner party at his country manor consisting of people experienced in breaking and entering ... and his servants aren't quite on the up-and-up either.
As part of the festivities, the Colonel decides to hold an unusual parlor game: offering a thousand pounds to the person who can get into his intruder-proof library. The catch? The room is protected by an a deafening alarm, heavy security locks and a guillotine device that will slice in half anyone entering or trying to enter unannounced. And on top of it all, there'll be one or two rather gruesome murders.
Happy Christmas, everyone and good luck...if you can stay alive, that is.

Originally born out of a bet that Shaw couldn't write a "seaside comedy" (a popular theatrical genre at that time). The result is perhaps the most surprising of Shaw's plays, complete with marital mayhem, tangled romance, and even doubtful dentistry. Despite the play's lighthearted tone, it's really another of Shaw's brilliantly observed social treatises, this time in the guise of a light comedy.

Season Greetings By Alan Ayckbourn
Season's Greetings
Christmas is a time when family and friends get together to celebrate the festive season. But the celebrations don't always go quite as planned. It's bad form, for instance, for a hostess to try and seduce her sister's boyfriend. And elderly uncles, who once worked for a security firm, should definitely be discouraged from going around with razor-sharp throwing knives under their trouser legs and loaded shotguns in their pockets. Who knows what might happen?

Expelled from Oxford for indecent behaviour, Paul Pennyfeather is oddly unsurprised to find himself qualifying for the position of schoolmaster at Llanabba Castle. His colleagues are an assortment of misfits, including Prendy (plagued by doubts) and captain Grimes, who is always in the soup (or just plain drunk). Then Sports Day arrives, and with it the delectable Margot Beste-Chetwynde, floating on a scented breeze. As the farce unfolds and the young run riot, no one is safe, least of all Paul. Taking its title from Edward Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Evelyn Waugh's first, funniest novel immediately caught the ear of the public with his account of an ingénu abroad in the decadent confusion of 1920s high society.
