The Third Kira Arc is in full swing now. Light and Misa have lost their memories and are helping L and company to try to catch this new Kira. This turns out to be relatively easy, because the third Kira is too proud not to tell the world (or at least pretty girls) about it. This arc plays out pretty similar to its anime counterpart, give or take some characterization differences. There's one major change, though: Near is already part of the game and plays a key role in this arc. This sets up the pieces very differently for everything to come.
Before that, I have to once again commend this adaptation for distilling Death Note down to its essentials. The Yotsuba Arc had a lot of great aspects, particularly in the character department. Seeing Light, L, and Misa act as comrades helped the audience understand their relationships with one another under more normal circumstances. However, I thought the raw plot was needlessly complicated for how simple the ultimate reveal was: the new Kira was a greedy doofus being played as a complete puppet of the shinigami (and ultimately Light), while believing that he had all the power. The myriad ploys to discover his identity were the few moments the original version dragged, so I'm glad that this version of Death Note condensed that.
Instead, the story added some new elements, like the mysterious "Babel" who's communicating with the Yotsuba Group. At first, it seemed like this person might also be the Third Kira, somehow taking on an L-like identity to throw them off. I also wondered if this character was this story's version of "B" from the Death Note canon: the hilariously-named Beyond Birthday, a Wammy's House boy gone bad who drives the light novel Another Note. Instead, it's Near, who's basically manipulating the Third Kira, Higuchi, in the same way that L did to Light in the beginning of the story. He (we know Near is a "he" now, despite being played by a girl) isn't sure that Higuchi is Kira, but he has a good idea. He's a much clearer target than Light ever was to L, because Higuchi makes the game so easy.
Of course, Light is an easier match than he ever was in the anime and manga, because he's not the same character, and this arc really drives that home. While Amnesia Light in the anime/manga was just as coldly calculating as L, this story takes pains to distinguish him from his rival's way of thinking. While L is cruelly unconcerned with who anyone he has to hurt that might get in his way, Light can't bear to hurt the innocent. I thought it was telling that he joined the Kira fight because of how Kira had upset his dad—the same motivation that drove Light to become Kira in the first place. Meanwhile, Light finds himself concerned with how easy he finds it to condemn others to death. He's a different enough person that it's no wonder his transformation at episode's end (upon rediscovering the Death Note) is so disturbing and drastic. Anime Light was just smirky and self-satisfied when he realized he'd "won" and his plan had gone off without a hitch. This Light completely loses it, to the point of not realizing that he's more or less revealed his identity to L and his father thanks to his haste in killing Higuchi. (He doesn't leave behind any concrete evidence, but there's no disguising the change in his behavior.)
Back on the subject of Near, he provides another example of how this version of Death Note improves in adaptation by fleshing out more neglected characters, even if it had to sacrifice L's character to accomplish that. Near's multiple-personalities shtick might seem like a silly cliché, but it's already made him more compelling than he ever was in the original work, where he was just a perfect and emotionless detective. This also owes a lot to Mio Yūki's acting, as she nails the transition between Near's delight at helping L catch Kira, to his despair as Mello "resurfaces." Mello is also more interesting as Near's "Mr. HYDE" than the pretty bad boy he was in the anime. I always thought Mello and Near's rivalry could have been way more interesting than it was by making them both into more complex characters. This Death Note sets up that rivalry, but also adds an additional dimension to make it more fascinating. They're not just vying to be the one who gets Kira, but vying for control of a single body. Whoever "wins" will define everyone's fate—including Light's.
Still, I was mostly wrong about Misa's potential in this version. I could also be wrong about how well this show does with Near and Mello. Just the fact that they're doing something different is refreshing, and their mere existence forces the show to stay on a divergent path. If the next episode of Death Note pulls the famous twist from the original show—which, based on the preview, looks pretty likely—Light's prior awareness of Near's existence will completely change what happens going forward. Originally, he was able to grow in confidence and build his worldwide cult—and sabotage the Kira investigation—precisely because he thought he'd defeated his last opponent. Now he already knows that there's another. Additionally, his very different reaction to recovering his memories means that instead of going into the next arc with a clean slate, he's made everyone that much more suspicious of him.
This episode makes for a permanent shake-up in the Death Note story. After a string of episodes bogged down in familiarity, that's exactly what this show needs.

The Kira Task Force finally see L in person. As the team show their police I.Ds to him, he pulls a finger gun on them, saying "if I were Kira, you'd be dead." They sit down together, and L advises them to turn off their cellphones. Matsuda thinks he's trying to be careful, but L insists that it's because he doesn't want his meeting be interrupted with a cellphone call. Before they start, L insists on being called "Ryuzaki" from this point on.
L discusses what they've learned about Kira's motives and methods, and uses the recent patterns of deaths to deduce that Kira is someone who was being investigated by the FBI between the dates of December 14th and 19th. He proposes sending out a message that 1500 investigators will be sent to Japan in response to the FBI deaths, to intimidate Kira and cause him to take some form of drastic action that might expose him.
At the Yagami household, Light's mother has a change of clothes for Chief Soichiro and Light volunteers to bring them to the police station. At the reception desk he encounters Raye Penber's fiancée and hears that she has information relating to the Kira case. Discussing the case with her, she reveals her relation to Penber and her suspicion that Kira can use methods other than heart attacks to kill people. She also relates that Penber told her that he had shown his ID to someone on the bus. Light muses on his luck in encountering her before she had the chance to meet with the police.

Light Yagami explains to Ryuk that he is trying to create an ideal world where no criminals are left unpunished, and "as the god of such a world," he cannot sacrifice half his life for the Shinigami Eyes, as that would limit his reign. He decides to experiment with the Death Note using incarcerated criminals. Chief Yagami and L are soon puzzled by reports they receive of prisoners dying in odd circumstances. Hacking into the notes for the ongoing investigation, Light discovers that L suspects they were tests and doesn't want this information reported to the media.
Later, Light creates a plan to discover the identity of the man following him without arousing his suspicion. He plans a date to Spaceworld with a classmate, Yuri. His tracker, though becoming less suspicious of him, follows Light onto the bus to Spaceworld, sitting directly behind the "couple." During the ride, a drug dealer and murderer named Kiichiro Osoreda who was recently in the news boards the bus and points a gun at the driver. Light hands a note to Yuri, saying that he will use a move his father taught him to knock out Osoreda. The man behind him notices and tries to talk Light out of it, but when Light accuses him of being in league with the hijacker, he eventually resorts to using his FBI ID to prove his innocence. Light drops the paper in the aisle and reaches for it, and Osoreda notices and picks up a note that contains plans for the date. However, the plans were written from a page in the Death Note, and after touching the page, Osoreda can see Ryuk. Intrigued, Ryuk walks toward him, and Osoreda panics and wastes his bullets trying to shoot him. Osoreda orders the bus to a stop and attempts to flee but is immediately struck and killed by a white sedan. As the police question witnesses and Raye
Penber leaves, Light resumes the date, planning the FBI investigator's death.

Synopsis
The episode starts off in Light's high school English class, where Light translates a sentence into Japanese. After school, someone asks if Light wants to hang out, but he claims he is busy. At home, Light begins entering more criminals' names into the Death Note as the news broadcasts their names and faces. He tells Ryuk he has to work hard because the time he gets to write in the notebook is limited due to his studies and concern for his health.
Light's sister, Sayu, knocks on his door to get help with her homework. Light immediately stashes the notebook in his drawer and lets his sister in. Ryuk warns Light that if she were to touch the Death Note, she would be able to see him. Light curses the fact that Ryuk waited until now to reveal such an important rule to him, but keeps a calm face as he helps his younger sister with her math homework.
Meanwhile, the International Criminal Police Organization begins its meeting, addressing the 52 known cases of criminals dying of heart attacks. One member questions why this is even a problem, since all the people who died were sentenced either to life in prison or death row, but another member stresses that even though such is the case, some unknown entity is killing criminals through some form of mass murder. The bickering escalates until the apparent head of the meeting silences everyone, saying that Interpol has no choice but to bring in 'L' again. The statement causes the entire room to begin whispering again. One man questions his chief about what the man means by 'L.' The chief tells the young man that 'L' is the name taken on by a mysterious person whose real name and identity are unknown. L has been able to solve every case given to him by the ICPO, who view him as their trump card. The room’s silence is broken by a member who questions how they will even be able to contact L in the first place, especially since he is known to only take on cases that interest him. This question is immediately answered by a tall man in a trench coat, whose face is hidden by his hat. The man, who the chief briefly explains is Watari, the ICPO's only contact to L, states that L has already been investigating the case. He opens a laptop to display an enormous letter 'L.' A voice-scrambled voice begins speaking from the laptop, introducing himself as L. L informs Interpol that he will need the cooperation of every organization being represented in the ICPO, especially the Japanese Task Force, since he has suspicions that the mass murderer resides in Japan.
Meanwhile, Light has devised a trap to prevent anyone from ever touching the notebook. He opens a drawer in his desk to reveal an ordinary diary, which would interest anyone snooping around enough to stop there. Underneath the diary, however, is a false bottom hiding the Death Note that, if pried open incorrectly, will set fire to the notebook and Light's desk. Light calmly tells Ryuk that he would much prefer risking a house fire over the notebook's discovery and a death sentence.
As more criminals die of heart attacks, the public dubs the entity behind it all as "Kira." While news reports ignore the fact that "Kira" has emerged from the killings, the appearance of many fan websites is enough proof to know that most people, especially in online anonymity, are welcoming Kira with open arms.
A special broadcast airing worldwide from the ICPO interrupts the television program. A man in a suit introduces himself as Lind L. Tailor, alias L. The Japanese Task Force watch the live broadcast in surprise that L is revealing his face for the first time. Tailor berates Kira for his crimes and claims he will face justice. Only when he states that what Kira is doing is evil does Light react angrily, writing Tailor's name in the notebook. 40 seconds later, Tailor collapses and is dragged off-camera, and the screen switches to L's insignia.
L's voice-scrambled voice sounds awestruck by the proof that Kira has the ability to kill without having to be there in person. Light curses L for being one step ahead of him as L taunts and challenges him. In turn for the proof of his abilities, L reveals to Kira that the worldwide airing was only being aired in the Kanto region of Japan and he has narrowed down Kira's location and identified Kira's first victim. The police are amazed and motivated by the turn of events. Light collects himself and he and L swear to hunt each other down, as they both believe themselves to be justice.
