President Ronald Reagan once said "The defense policy of the United States is based on a simple premise: The United States does not start fights. We will never be an aggressor. We maintain our strength in order to deter and defend against aggression -- to preserve freedom and peace." Unfortunately, in the decades since 9/11 the United States defense policy has become the antithesis of those words. We have started fights, as Ukraine so blindingly exposed, we have been the aggressor, as the second Iraq war highlighted, and now we have let deterrence fail without taking the appropriate policy actions to reverse course and stand at the precipice of a world war involving two nuclear powers and a rising third. America needs new leaders that will reform defense policy back to one of peace through strength. I can’t say it enough, the Roman’s led with military force and destroyed their civilization by ignoring the consequences of such policies. We have an opportunity every two years to elect new leaders into our Congress that can affect the needed changes and this year Cameron Hamilton of Virginia’s 7th District is one of those new leaders. President Reagan’s words are on his website at cameronhamilton.com. Cameron is a former Navy SEAL, and has worked at the state department and on border security at the Department of Homeland defense.
