Russia’s Integrated Air Defense Network
Russia’s Integrated Air-Defense Network.
The Russians are expected to network the S-500s with their S-400, S-300VM4 and S-350 and other weapons as part of an overall integrated air-defense network. As one U.S. industry official noted, while the Russian military industrial sector suffered greatly in the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union, somehow Moscow managed to continue developing advanced air defense system without much degradation in capability. Indeed, some of these new weapons—like the S-500—are so capable that many U.S. defense official worry that even stealth warplanes like the F-22, F-35 and the B-2 might have problems overcoming them.
The Russian military expects to receive the first examples of the new Almaz Antey S-500 air and missile defense systems in the near future. Meanwhile, tests are continuing on the advanced S-350 Vityaz system, which will eventually replace the existing S-300PS air defense batteries.
The new weapon—which will form the upper tier of Russia’s layered integrated air defense system—is expected to be able to engage targets at altitudes of about 125 miles—or 660,000 feet. That means that S-500 will be able to engage targets such as incoming ballistic missiles in space at ranges as great as 400 miles. The first regiment of S-500 will be deployed to protect Moscow and central Russia.

Russia Tests S 500 Defence System Designed Shoot Down Western Nuclear Missiles and Satellites
Odo Puiu Events invites you to watch a ….
Russia Tests S-500 Prometheus System Designed Shoot Down Western Nuclear Missiles and Satellites. S-500 In Action.
S500Prmetey, #RussianMissile, #AirDefense
Amid ongoing tensions and major U.S. investments in the modernisation of its nuclear arsenal, the Russian military has successfully tested a new anti-ballistic missile system meant to shoot down Western nuclear tipped strategic missiles.
The defence system was tested at the Sary-Shagan range in Kazakhstan, a facility which was established under the Soviet Union and has been leased by Russia frequently since, and hit the simulated target.
The test notably came just days after the U.S. Navy successfully tested its own missile defence system from a destroyer warship at sea, with further tests by both countries expected over the coming year.
The new missile defence system, the designation of which was not revealed, was designed to guard the country against both air and space attacks.
At the Sary-Shagan testing range (Republic of Kazakhstan), a combat crew of the air and missile defence troops of the Aerospace Forces successfully carried out a regular test launch of a new missile of the Russian missile defence system.
Russia’s most prominent defence systems with such capabilities currently under development are the S-500 and A-235, the former which was designed primarily to neutralise ballistic missiles, satellites and high value aircraft such as American E-3 AWACS jets.
The latter was designed exclusively for defence against targets in space such as ballistic missiles, and has the longest range of any surface to air missile system in the world at over 1,500km.
Russia's armed forces have reportedly tested a new anti ballistic missile system in the form of a long range surface to air missile, which comes as part of the service's efforts to strengthen its capability to intercept intercontinental range ballistic missiles from the United States and its Western allies.
It has been widely speculated to have been a test of the S-500 Prometheus long range surface to air missile system which entered early production earlier in the year 2020.
The S-500 saw a prolific and more public test in May 2018, which U.S. intelligence reported set a world record for interception range at 481km.
The S-500 has been developed primarily as an anti ballistic missile system, and unlike the S-300 and S-400 is not intended to engage enemy fighter sized aircraft - though it may retain this capability.
The missile system reportedly retains an engagement range of 600km, and is the only system in the world in production today which is capable of intercepting hypersonic targets.
As Russia’s air defence forces prepare to induct their first units of S-500 air defence systems, a hypersonic surface to air missile system which sets new records for precision, speed, altitude and range of engagement, new details have emerged regarding the platform’s specifications.
The new missile system was designed with the capability of working outside the atmosphere where aerodynamic control is impossible. The platform would field a variety of munitions designed to neutralise “ballistic missiles of all types,” and would also retain secondary anti aircraft and anti satellite capabilities.
With a 600km engagement range, the S-500’s induction will mark a significant improvement in the reach of the Russian Air Defence Forces over its predecessor the S-400 - which when deploying hypersonic missiles could strike targets up to 400km away.
The platform will thus considerably expand the aerial anti access area denial zone particularly targeting high value heavy support aircraft from the Western Bloc such as KC-135 tankers, E-3 Sentry AWACS platforms and E-8 Joint STARS command and control and surveillance aircraft.

How The Russian S 300PMU 2 Missile Defense System Works
Armed Machines invites you to watch a ….
How The Russian S-300PMU-2 Missile Defence System Works
How the Russian S-300PMU-2 missile defence system works
1. The long-range surveillance radar tracks objects over a range of 300km (185 miles) and relays information to the command vehicle, which assesses potential targets
2. A target is identified and the command vehicle orders the engagement radar to launch missiles
3. Launch data is sent to the best placed of the battalion's six launch vehicles and it releases two surface-to-air missiles
4. The engagement radar helps guide the missiles towards the target. It can guide up to 12 missiles simultaneously, engaging up to six targets at once The vehicle used as a launcher is currently manufactured at the Minsk Wheel Tractor Plant (MZKT) in Belarus, although Russia is now shifting the production to its western city of Bryansk. Russian S-300PMU system specification
Specification: Each launcher vehicle carries four missile containers (two missiles per target). A full battalion includes six launcher vehicles with a total of 24 missiles, plus command-and-control and long-range radar detection vehicles
Special feature: Fires two missiles vertically within 3 seconds, making it versatile and accurate
Capability: Russian 48N6E are the standard missiles fired from S-300PMU launchers. They have a range of 5-150km (3-93 miles) at a maximum altitude of 27-30km (17-19 miles).
Response time: Vehicle stopping to missile firing is five minutes For the Russians, solving the problem of targeting a low observable aircraft is something that they continue to work on—but it is doubtful the Moscow has resolved the issue. Russia's strong investment in layers of air defenses tells us that the Kremlin believes the primary threat to its ground forces comes from U.S. airpower. As such, defeating stealth technology is one of Moscow’s top priorities, Kofman notes, and the Kremlin has dedicated a lot of resources to that end.
Russia has tried a number of different techniques to defeat stealth technology.
Among those is trying to develop a tight integrated air defense network with multiple radars trying to look at the same aircraft from different directions—but how effective those efforts have been is an open question. “It's great being able to see an aircraft, or parts of it, but getting accuracy such that you can confidently get a missile near the target is the primary challenge,” Kofman said.
The S-300 is a series of highly capable, long-range surface-to-air missile complexes first deployed in the USSR in 1979 and later modified by the Russian armed forces. As well as targeting aircraft, the fully mobile units have the capacity to engage ballistic missiles.
Experts believe that Russia is most likely delivering the S-300PMU-2 systems - also known by the Nato codename SA-20 - which were first introduced in 1997 and are comparable to the US Patriot Air and Missile Defense System.
The Russian batteries are made by a state-run company, Almaz-Antei, which last year announced it was stopping the production of the S-300s and switching resources to the more advanced S-400s.
