VX-4 Toys & Becoming a Test Pilot 1976-78
In Part 2 of my discussions with former Lockheed-Martin Chief Test Pilot Tom Morgenfeld, we wrap-up the “MIG’s at Groom Lake” tales and discuss some of the other famous VX-4 Toys such as flying the “Black Bunny” (‘VANDY 1’) and “Spirit of 76” (‘VANDY 76’) F-4 phantoms. We also learn how Duck and Tom both made their way out of the US Navy and into the Test Pilot world in the private aerospace industry.
I’m joined on this episode by Duck’s VX-4 camping buddy and former Lockheed Martin Chief Test Pilot Capt. Tom ‘Trees’ Morgenfeld, US Navy (Ret). Tom spent 3 years at Pt. Magu in the late 70’s with Duck exploiting Russian aircraft at the Nellis & Groom Lake ranges north of Las Vegas. All this paved Tom’s way into the Black World of the famed Lockheed Martin “Skunk Works” as a Test Pilot on the F-117 & YF-22, and Chief Test Pilot of the X-35.
We discuss both their desires to work in the flight test community, how they exited the Navy in late Seventies, and both went to work as Aeronautical Engineers & Test Pilots in the civilian world. Along the way, Tom shares some great stories & some special insights about my dad. I was so fortunate to be able to capture these moments between us - thank you Tom!

VX-4 Cockpit audio Navy F-4 vs Mig 17 & 21 at Groom Lake 1974-75
There are 5 Mad-Duck cockpit audio recordings spanning 11-Dec 1974 – July 1975 and document “Duck against the MIGS!” according to several of the MIG pilots from VX-4 that were participating with him in the now declassified program.
As the Vietnam War was winding down in 1973, the US Government had secretly acquired a MIG 17, 21 and 23 as part of Project HAVE DRILL. The aircraft were kept “north of Las Vegas, in the desert at a highly confidential site”, and regularly flown by select Navy and Air Force pilots to exploit their capabilities. The initial program was expanded in the mid-70’s as Projects HAVE IDEA and HAVE PAD, as select VX-4 pilots were trained in the MIG's and used as an ”Aggressor” squadron against F-4’s piloted by select pilots from the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN) and VX-4. This eventually led to the formation of the Air Force’s 4477th “Red Eagles” Test & Evaluation Squadron, which acquired & flew additional Russian aircraft throughout the 1980’s training US Navy, Air Force and Marine Pilots.
I’m joined on this episode by Duck’s VX-4 camping buddy and former Lockheed Martin Chief Test Pilot Capt. Tom Morgenfeld, US Navy (Ret). Tom spent 3 years at Pt. Magu in the late 70’s with Duck exploiting Russian aircraft at the Nellis & Groom Lake ranges north of Las Vegas. All this paved Tom’s way into the Black World of the famed Lockheed Martin “Skunk Works” as a Test Pilot on the F-117 & YF-22, and Chief Test Pilot of the X-35 (details coming in Part 2!)
We discuss VX-4; its purpose, projects & ‘toys’. Along the way, Tom shares some great stories & some special insights about my dad. I was so fortunate to be able to capture these moments between us - thank you Tom!

TOP GUN ALPHA Feb 1973 | 8mm & cockpit voice F-4J (VF-114) Graduation Flight
“TOP GUN ALPHA” is the 1st cockpit voice audio we have chronologically and a 1st hand account of TOP GUN graduation flight in 1973 known as “TOP GUN ALPHA”, as depicted in the original 1986 Top Gun movie starring Tom Cruise. #talktomegoose
No trophies, plagues “I graduated top of my class” Hollywood BS. Instead the program broke down ego’s & built-up teamwork, learning to fight as a squadron on a full strike mission - “I’m NOT leaving my Wingman”! Your job as a graduate was to then take that knowledge back to your squadron and share it so more guys could stay alive.
I’m joined on this episode by former TOP GUN Instructor CDR Steve “Cobra “Queen USN (Ret.). Cobra spent 4 years at Miramar in the mid-70’s shaping what would be made famous in the 1986 film “Top Gun” starring Tom Cruise. He was also MAD-DUCK’s friend and one of his Instructors along with Randy Duke Cunningham! Come listen to them do battle over the deserts of southern CA with about 24 aircraft in the skies at once!
We discuss the REAL TOP GUN; it’s purpose, mission, tactics, & curriculum. Along the way, Steve shares some great stories & some special insights about my dad. I was so fortunate to be able to capture these moments between us - thank you Steve!
The raw audio tape is 45 mins in length, and has been heavily edited & compressed for time proposes.

Combat! Navy Cruise 1972 | 8mm cockpit view F-4J VF-114 deployment USS Kitty Hawk
“Navy Cruise 1972” is the 4th and largest 8mm reel containing footage from ~1-Feb 1972 – 30-Sept 1972 during his 1st combat tour aboard the USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) flying F-4J’s as a member of VF-114 “Aardvark’s”. A large part of it was shot from the flight deck during flight ops and onboard with him during combat missions. Unfortunately there is no voice to go with it.
I’m joined on this episode by former Blue Angel #1 RADM Denny “Rattler” Wisely USN (Ret.). This was Denny’s 3rd combat cruise with VF-114 and Mad Duck’s wingman a whole lot of times. Denny sat down for a conversation and talks about the realities of combat – the stress, the grind, the fact that you are getting shot at and how you “blow off” steam in the down times just to stay sane.
We review the last ~13 minutes of the 8mm reel as he explains the typical mission profile and tactics we are seeing - actual footage of bombing & TARCAP missions over North Vietnam in the spring & summer of 1972. Along the way he shares some great stories & some special insights about my dad. I was so fortunate to be able to capture these moments between us - thank you Denny! The 8mm is uncut by me, this is how he spliced it and it came off the reel.

1st Flight in a Navy F-4J | 8mm Cockpit view RAG Training Miramar 1971
EP-3 “RAG – 1st Flight in a F-4J Phantom” – This is the 3rd 8mm reel and contains footage from about Aug 1970-Dec 1971 during his time in VF-121 “Pacemakers” as judged from the logbooks. This documents Replacement Air Group (RAG) training and unfortunately there is no voice to go with it. A large part of it was shot from the back seat during his first hop in an F-4J on Dec 15, 1970 according to the logbooks,. We also learn the origins of the “Mad Duck” call sign from a very special guest.
After a chance encounter & brief discussion at Oshkosh 2023, Cdr. Bill ‘Willy’ Driscoll USN (Ret.) agreed to help me with this one since he went through the RAG with my dad. Bill sat down for a conversation and explains the purpose and tactics of the RAG and the Instructors. We discuss the various types of training you get, the intense competition between the students, and he shares some great stories about team work, resilience, & some special insights about my dad. I was so fortunate to be able to capture these moments between us separated by ~52 yrs. Thank you Bill.

“CarQuals – 1970” | 8mm Cockpit Views Navy TF-9 Carrier Qualifications USS Lexington
EP-2 “Carquals – 1970 | F-9 x-Country to ELP” is the 2nd 8mm reel and contains footage from about May-June 1970 as judged from the log books. There is no voice to go with it. A large part of it was shot between May 18- 26, 1970 during FCL qualifications presumably at Kingsville, and at sea on the USS Lexington (CVT-16) likely somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico. There are 10 flights logged on those dates totaling 29 FCLs (May 18-25), 6 traps & cat shots, 2 T&G and 1 “Bolter” (May 26). The 8mm you see is completely uncut by me, this is how it came off the reel as edited by my father - “Mad Duck”
Cobra explains the land-based practice “Field Carrier Landing” system (FCL) that we see first, and then all the carrier operations we see in the second half. He has some great reactions, “feedback” for some of the pilots , and a great story about landing an experimental plane on a carrier when he was at the Navy Test Pilot School in Pax River.

“F-9 Cross Country Nov 1970” | 8mm Cockpit Views Navy TF-9 Training in the Southwest US
EP-1 “F-9 Cross Country is how we got here”
"F-9 Cross Country" is the earliest 8mm reel dated Nov 1970 but it contains footage from about 1969 - mid 1970 as judged from the log books. There is no voice to go with it. A large part of it is shot in the southwest likely during many cross country flights in a TF-9 over western Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. The 8mm footage you see is largely uncut by me, this is how it came off the reel as edited by my father - “Mad Duck”
We meet Cobra and get the back story of how they met, joined the Navy, and both ended up as jet pilots in the Vietnam War, then later at Top Gun. Steve does great job narrating, explaining a lot of what & why we are seeing what we see as we flip through the log books keeping pace with the mp4. We get a few surprises along the way!

The Mad-Duck Chronicles FullTrailer4k
People ask me… why do you do it? What makes you want to fly & share it with the world? If I answer them honestly…I would say….. “I don’t know”.
It’s just something you are born with; it’s always been a part of me and something I’ve felt compelled to do since I can remember. The son of a Naval Aviator, my childhood is filled memories on Navy bases… the sound, the smell, and feel of afterburners on take-off, sitting in F-4, A-4 & F-14 cockpits. I always knew I wanted to be a pilot but missed out having that relationship with him.
But what you were given that chance? What if you were handed a gift of 8mm & voice recordings from his cockpit. A first-hand account of a 5 year journey as an Officer | Naval Aviator|Combat Veteran|Top-Gun Graduate|Test Pilot & Engineer|OG YouTuber.
I knew I had to put this puzzle together, and knew exactly who could help me do it. Cmdr Steve “Cobra” Queen, US Navy (Ret) - Naval Aviator|Top-Gun Instructor|Navy Test Pilot School Alum... and the guy that talked my old man into signing up.
Come along on this multi-part series as we dive into Mad-Duck's archives, and try to tell the stories the wannabe YouTuber never got to. Welcome to the Mad-Duck Chronicles.

Re-build Rescue Pt 2 | Annual From Hell UPDATE

Repair, Re-build, or Replace? | THE Piper Cherokee Six Annual From Hell
This was not a fun video to make. There is no flying, no beautiful destination, witty banter or cool views. Just some cold hard facts of life and some tough and very expensive conversations. Most times you win Annual Inspection Lottery, but sometimes you lose…this is one of those days.
This vlog shares my recent not so fun experiences with aircraft ownership. I share our decision making process so that hopefully others can learn something from this experience. I meet with our A&P to have a sit down conversation in the shop to review the engine situation and discuss our options. We talk through the pros & cons of a quick repair vs. overhaul, vs. re-built vs new engine. What does an engine overhaul truly mean and what are you getting? Why is there such variation in quotes from shop to shop? How can Lycoming declare a re-built engine a 0 “Time Since New” engine? How are current supply chain challenges impacting the time & cost to keep a single engine GA plane flying safely?

Southwest Was Grounded, We’re Not | Cherokee Six Rescues Family Christmas Ski Vacation
What do you do when Christmas with family and your ski vacation is threatened by a once in a lifetime blizzard, paralyzing the Midwest, shuttering air travel, cancelling flights for days? You go private. But there’s just one catch… you have to fly the plane! Climb inside the cockpit with us for the ride and see how we did it.
We got out ahead of the Blizzard of 2022 and made it to KSUS as our “base of operations” for the week. It gave us the best odds of success to complete the entire planned trip of 10 days, and guaranteed we’d at least celebrate Christmas with family in St Louis. With the plane safely tucked away in a hangar out of the snow, 75 mph wind and bitterly cold temperatures, we rode out the storm. Once the weather cleared, we found our window of opportunity headed for Denver and Copper Mountain!
Along the way, we cover about 30 years of history in our Cherokee time machine as we pass over most of the places we have called home the past 30 years; where I went to school, met my wife, had our first jobs, 2nd jobs, got married, and got my private pilot’s license.
I have a new wing(wo)man and she gets a crash course in the radios and navigation while soaking up the gorgeous views Mother Nature’s handy work had created the previous few days. A quick pit stop in Rooks County, KS for the cheapest fuel around before we are airborne again for a sunset arrival to KAPA and the Rockies. We hop in the waiting rental car and are off to Copper Mountain! We made it! Hopefully we can get back home.

EPICTREK 2021 | Yellowstone
Another early start but a short flight this time to Yellowstone National Park! A perfect VFR morning for flying at 10.5k to avoid terrain, but also requires us to check pulse ox levels and start up the O2 system for the first time on this trip. A picturesque flight down the Ennis Valley before turning east, entering Yellowstone Park from above – check it out!
We fly over most of the geyser basins, head towards the northeast caldera rim, circle back over the Central Plateau for a close up of Grand Prismatic Spring before heading northwest out of the park via the Madison River Valley to land at KWYS. We hop in the waiting rental car and head back into the park to explore all the same areas +many more by ground for the rest of the day.
This was the highlight of our trip (so far…) and exactly the vision when I first got this crazy idea for a family vacation. This is probably the most ambitious video I’ve ever attempted, from the flying to the filmmaking so I hope you enjoy, Like, Share.

EPICTREK 2021 | Home
Welcome back - Day 10 EpicTrek 2021. 1 simple objective today - make it home.
We got grounded yesterday by the remnants of a hurricane. Overnight it’s weakened and turned east, so we slept in this morning to buy us some more time.
No cool take-off views or major sightseeing, just a brief view of the Great Salt Plains in north-central OK before picking up our IFR clearance in the air. Then in & out of clouds +dodging convective activity all day.
We fly through the remnants of the L West of KSTL, sort of a getting an idea what flying through “the eye” would be like as a “Hurricane Hunter”. Closer to home things get more serious…
We’ll definitely be shooting an INST APP into KASW - RNAV 9 KASW via direct JIDNA
down to personal minimums & swirly winds. Should be a fun day doing that pilot scchhhtttuuufff… Come on along!

EPICTREK 2021 | Meteor Crater
We finally start the long trek back home from Grand Canyon but at least it should be a pretty easy flight today. We are treated to a picturesque sunrise takeoff from KGCN as we head southeast to Winslow to check out Meteor Crater. We follow route 66 into New Mexico, all while watching the crazy Martian-like landscape change before our eyes. We start to see some familiar signs of home as we dropped back into the plains across the Texas panhandle and into Oklahoma for our fuel stop.
The family wanted to continue on to home but Mother Nature had other ideas. We decided not to mess with building convective activity from the remnants of Hurricane Elsa impacting Missouri eastward and called it a day in lovely Alva. Thanks to the guys at Alva Regional Airport for tucking us in a hangar for the night keeping us safe from the storms!

EPICTREK 2021 | Grand Canyon
Another pre-dawn wake up, another challenging flight, big planes, max gross weight, density altitude, terrain avoidance departure procedure, MOA’s, TOPGUN, Area 51…. Just another typical morning departure on Epic Trek 2021. But it was all worth it once we got our own, personal bird’s eye tour of Grand Canyon before touchdown.
Despite all the challenges getting there, we saw some cool stuff along the way; beautiful desert scenery, huge solar farms, Lake Mead, Colorado river, and of course the Canyon. We are cleared to fly the Dragon & Zuni corridors over Grand Canyon before landing - absolutely stunning, a must see. At sweet landing to cap it off while dodging all the helicopters and tourists @KGCN.
We hop in the Jeep for a tour of Grand Canyon National Park’s South Rim. Check out the wildlife we saw and the epic sunset views we captured hiking & hanging out in the Canyon! Hope you enjoy, Like, and Share, thanks for watchin’.

EPICTREK 2021 | Reno or Bust
Another early start and another challenging flight this time to reach the half way point in Reno. We are at max gross weight, rising density altitude, a terrain avoidance departure procedure, lots of time over a very lonely and empty dessert avoiding tons of MOA’s and Restricted areas, convective weather and a challenging decent into the “Reno Bowl” while battling mountain waves and the big boys. Do we make it? - check it out!
Despite the many challenges, we got in some great views along the way; a picturesque departure out of Yellowstone, Grand Teton, beautiful desert scenery, huge open pit mines and solar farms, the Tesla Gigafactory, and Fallon NAS (“Topgun”) as we approach Reno. We are cleared to descend into “the Bowl” and join the downwind at KRNO, but the mountain waves & convective activity had other ideas. After some help from ATC shuffling all the big boys out of the way, we finally touch down, completely drained – mentally & physically.
We hop in the waiting rental car and head straight for the hotel to start 4 days of well-earned R & R. Stick around for the ending to see what we packed in – downtown Reno, exploring Lake Tahoe, and whitewater rafting on the Truckee! Hope you enjoy, Like, and Share, thanks for watchin’.

EPICTREK 2021 | Mt. Rushmore
We skedaddle out of Mitchell SD on Leg 2 in a race against the rising density altitude & convective activity to reach our goal of Laurel MT for the night. Along the way we check out Mt. Rushmore, my wingman gets schooled in basic aircraft & cockpit systems, we pay homage in the “Matt Guthmiller Snack Break”, and up close flyby of Mt. Rushmore & Crazy Horse – check it out! The last hour is filled with wonder at the rising, rocky terrain and first glimpse of the Tetons. All we wanted after our 9 hours of flying was a bed, ‘cause we have a date with Yellowstone tomorrow!

EpicTrek 2021 | Corn Palace SD
After years of talking, I finally did it - planned the ultimate family “road-trip”. Along the way we explore some of America’s most iconic destinations!
EP 1 - We head out early to take advantage of the cool, smooth morning air and get a jump on our 12 hr day. 1st leg is 5 hrs KASW – KMHE with the simple goal of putting as much “flatland” behind us, reaching the mountainous northwest by sunset. We go IFR due to some low clouds near Chicago & some forecasted weather in Iowa. On the ground in Mitchell, SD we grab the keys to the crew car & head downtown for some lunch while the O2 & fuel tanks get filled. Since we came all this way, of course we had to see the one & only Corn Palace – check it out!
