Free Market Road Show 2022 - Welcome and Introduction
In an era of war in Ukraine and the terrible toll in lives lost and injured, there are serious economic impacts that will result: reduced wheat harvest, delay in fertilizer exports, sanctions against Russia including the removal from SWIFT, concerns of food shortages, food and fuel inflation and more, a distinguished gathering will address the challenges of our time and examine what solutions can be offered to meet them.
Among others, the following topics will be discussed at the 2022 Budapest turn of the Free Market Road Show, a joint event of the Danube Institute and Austrian Economic Centre:
• Europe’s Energy Crisis: Impact, Outlook and Possible Solutions and the Geopolitical and Macroeconomic Implications for EU relations with the rest of the world.
• Is the V4 Still Europe’s ‘New Economic Heart’? The V4 countries were fast becoming the key second engine. With the energy crisis further complicated by the differing political responses to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, what is needed to get the V4 “economic engine” back on track?
• From Globally Synchronized Growth to Globally Synced Inflation or Deflation? The trend towards de-globalization that started when COVID showed the world’s dependency on China for personal protective equipment (PPE) has increased dramatically as energy prices spiked with the sanctions on Russia. Europe is more vulnerable than the U.S. and while both are suffering from globally synchronized inflation the U.S. Federal Reserve is about to tighten interest rates and possibly put its economy into recession. Speakers will discuss the implications of this divergence and the outlook for EU and US monetary and fiscal policy.
• China’s support of Russia has been cautious so far. How do the experts see its role in the post-Ukraine/post-Covid world and how will it impact EU relations?

The Role of Education in the Age of Social Media
We live in increasingly polarised societies. Whatever the issue, both ’sides’ tend to see the other as the disease, and themselves as the cure. In this talk, Dr Calum TM Nicholson, Fellow at Danube Institute argues that this polarisation is itself merely symptomatic of the pathological business model which underpins social media. He then proposes that the real ‘cure’ lies not in our politics, or in technology per se, but in how we educate in the 21st century.

An Evening with Rod Dreher - A conversation with the Author of "Live Not by Lies"
In 2020, author and Visiting Fellow Rod Dreher set the conservative world on fire with the publication of his book, “Live Not By Lies” outlining how modern Christians (and others) could use the experiences of those who had survived Communist totalitarianism to stand firm in the present era, in a society that, through the advance of cancel culture and related forms of "wokeness," is becoming increasingly oppressive.
Since its publication, the book has sold over 160,000 copies in the US, and has become an international best seller translated into ten languages. As the power of progressivism reveals itself to be increasingly totalitarian, "Live Not By Lies" has become an indispensable guide to creating islands of integrity and resilience amid an ideological flood that threatens to drown truth and meaning.
István Kiss, Executive director of the Danube Institute engaged Mr. Dreher in a wide ranging conversation on his past works, his current projects, and the role of conservatism and Christianity in the globalised world.

30 YEARS OF THE V4 - Conference and Book Launch - Panel 3
The future of the V4 – The future
2022 Április 22-én a Danube Institute a Batthyány Lajos Alapítvánnyal együttműködve rendezte meg a korábban megjelentetett “30 years of the V4” című könyv bemutató konferenciáját. A könyv ötlete a Visegrádi együttműködés tavaly februárban ünnepelt 30 éves évfordulójából származik, ekkor kezdték el a Danube Institute kutatói megtervezni a könyvet.
On 12 April 2022 Danube Institute in cooperation with the Batthyány Lajos Foundation hosted a book launch event on the occasion of the recently published volume entitled “30 years of the V4”. The idea of this book came from the fact, that the Visegrád Cooperation celebrated its 30th anniversary in February 2021, and that is when research fellows of the Danube Institute started brainstorming about this project. Taking advantage of the publication of the book, a conference was also organised, where distinguished experts from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia could discuss their views regarding the future of the Visegrád Cooperation, but they could also assess the past challenges and achievements of the coalition of Central European countries. Evaluating the past and projecting scenarios of the future are especially important at a time, when the V4 experiences one of the greatest trials of its existence as a result of its members very different national approaches to the war in Ukraine. Nevertheless, it appears obvious that standing a united front is essential in facing the difficulties of the future, be them economic risks, security problems or energy issues.

Attacks on Christian Communities and Institutions Preliminary Conference - Welcome, Keynote Speakers
Attacks on Christian Communities and institutions - Keynote Speeches
The 'Attacks on Christian Communities and institutions' themed conference organized by the Danube Institute on March 28 was designed as a preliminary conference and served as a step toward a more extensive international conference series throughout the year.
At our conference, the first keynote speech was offered by David Curry, the President and CEO of Open Doors USA. The Open Doors has monitored Christian persecution since 1992. Mr. Curry gave insight into the current trends of Christian persecution worldwide. He named three trends in the persecution of Christians: tribal extremism, centralized government control, and the strengthening of African jihadist groups.
The second keynote speaker was Janine di Giovanni, Multi-Award-Winning Journalist and Author, a Senior Fellow and Professor at Yale University's Jackson Institute for Global Affairs.
She shared her fieldwork experiences and emphasized that the emergence of the Islamic State has accelerated the already existing Christian exodus in the Middle East.

A Danube Institute március 28-i konferenciája a keresztény közösségek üldöztetésének kérdéseit vizsgálta.
