A Joint Event of Danube Institute & MCC: The Battle in Defense of Free Speech
Date:10 November 2022
In September, PayPal closed three accounts of Toby Young with no explanation: his personal account, the account of the Free Speech Union (an organization he set up in 2020 to defend free speech), and the Daily Sceptic (the account of his news publishing website). He fought to restore the account, and he succeeded, but he decided not to use PayPal until the service restores all the accounts of the individuals and organizations it has closed for political reasons. The lecture seeks answers to questions such as the limits of ideology in private digital services as well as the possibilities of defending free speech nowadays.
Speakers:
- Toby Young, General Secretary of the Free Speech Union
- John O’Sullivan, President of the Danube Institute
- Moderator: Boris Kalnoky, Head of Media School, MCC

Post-Election Analysis of the Israeli Election
Israeli voters returned to the ballot box on November first for the fifth time in four years. The current government of the 24th Knesset marked an end to the 15-year reign of Benjamin Netanyahu, but the seven-party coalition, headed by Prime Minister Neftali Bennet never managed to consolidate power and was dissolved earlier this year. After that, Benjamin Netanyahu could return to power by winning the elections on 1 November! But what will a ‘new’ Netanyahu-era look like? What policies will the previous coalition government pursue after it leaves power? Can weary Israeli voters hope for a more stable government?
Danube Institute has gathered a unique blend of voices to examine the election results.
Our speakers include:
- Hananya Naftali, leading Israeli Jewish influencer and human rights activist in the fight against antisemitism and terrorism against Israel.
- Dr. Ofir Haivry, Vice-President of the Herzl Institute of Jerusalem and a co-founder of the Edmund Burke foundation of Washington, DC.
- Dr. Balázs Gábor, Vice-rector, Jewish Theological Seminary - University of Jewish Studies

New challenges, modern answers - U.S. midterm elections forecast
Date: 03 November, 2022 4:00 p.m.
The United States midterm elections could influence US and global politics for the next two years and greatly determine what the Biden-administration will be able to do in their time left. The polls show a good chance for the Republicans to take back the House of Representatives and even perhaps the Senate. Is this really possible, can we still trust the polls, and what factors will ultimately determine the outcome of the midterm elections? On November 3rd we tried to find answers to these questions with American domestic and foreign policy experts.
Speakers:
- Balázs Mártonffy, the director of the Institute for American Studies
- Rod Dreher, the senior editor of The American Conservative, Director of Network Project - Danube Institute
- István Stumpf, former constitutional justice of the Constitutional Court of Hungary, senior researcher at the Institute for American Studies

New Conservatism for Old
What is the definition of conservatism? Where do our liberties come from? The conventional answer in America is that they come from John Locke, enshrined in our Revolution. Italy Elects Its First Woman Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni
A panel discussion on a historic election in Italy.
On September 22, speaking at Princeton University in the United States, EU commission president Ursula von der Leyen stated that Europe had “the tools” to deal with Italy if the results of the election went in a “difficult direction”.
Italian voters responded on September 25th with a victory for Meloni, co-founder of the Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy) in 2012.
Meanwhile, The New York Times reporter used the word “fascist” 28 times in the article to describe the first woman premier in Italian history.
She replaces Mario Draghi, who was appointed without standing for parliament or being elected. If she is appointed - as expected - by the president, as the leader of the largest single party she will be the first elected head of government in the last four elections.
Fratelli d’ Italia is a party which garnered only 4% of the vote in 2018. And yet Meloni experienced a meteoric rise to win Sunday’s election with a projected vote of over 25%.
Her conservative coalition of three parties Salvini’s Lega and Berlusconi’s Forza Italia
will enjoy a substantial parliamentary majority in both houses and will replace the appointed prime minister, Mario Draghi with the first leader who has actually stood for election since the past three Italian governments which each had an appointed, not an elected leader.
What does it mean for Italy? For Hungary? For centre-right parties in Europe? For Italian 10-year sovereign bonds and the markets in general?
Why does Meloni’s phrase “We defend God, country and family” strike terror in the hearts of the left?
Speakers:
- John O’Sullivan, President of the Danube Institute

Climate Policy: reflections on the place and role of science in society
Science is an invaluable tool, and essential for understanding the causes and nature of climate change. But to what extent can or should science guide us in understanding climate change’s societal impact?
In this talk, Dr Calum TM Nicholson, Visiting fellow at Danube Institute explores the limits of science, and the dangers of ‘Scientism’ - the assumption that science isn’t simply a tool in service of our values and culture, but a guide to what our values and culture should be. If we are to formulate rigorous and judicious climate policy, we must understand not just the science of climate change, but the place and role of that science in society.

After Christianity: Jan Patočka and the Future of Europe
“Christianity remains the greatest, unsurpassed, but also un-thought-through force which enabled humans to struggle against decadence.” These bold words by the Czech philosopher Jan Patočka can be found in his opus magnum, The Heretical Essays in the Philosophy of History (1975). Nowadays, we sense that Europe finds itself in the Post-Christian Era; secularization, detraditionalization, individualization are but a few hallmarks of the situation after Christianity. What to make of Patočka’s highly appreciative yet cautiously critical thoughts on Christianity? What does it mean to live after Christianity? Patočka’s life-long concern and rapprochement with Christianity, culminating in The Heretical Essays, does not offer apologetics. Rather, it helps us to rethink Christianity as less of a religion and more of an existential mode of being.

Exploring the Underground Writings of Jan Patočka: Philosophy and the Experience of History
This is the second lecture of the series. “History is not intelligible without free responsibility.” This is one of Patočka’s many “heretical” convictions. It is in stark contrast to materialist theories of history (notably, the Marxist) that he asserts “the primacy of freedom” in history. And what is freedom for? “Freedom,” we read in his second essay, “is freedom for truth.” This is a startling conclusion. Yet it is because of this conclusion that Patočka links the origins of “history” to the origins of European philosophy – by which he means, in the first place, the thought of Socrates and his protégé Plato. On Patočka’s telling, history and philosophy are both quests for truth.
