LA bus drivers conduct unofficial strike after multiple drivers suffer brutal attacks

Los Angeles Metro bus drivers staged an unofficial strike to protest poor safety conditions on public transit as staff face violent assaults from unruly passengers. Weekday ridership in the system is only at 80% of pre-pandemic levels despite expansions in service coverage and frequency while car registrations remain steady, suggesting riders who have car access but replaced some car trips with transit before the pandemic are deciding to remain in their cars instead.
LA Metro’s budget has increased significantly, from $6.6 billion in 2019, to $9.1 billion in 2024. Once accounting for inflation, LA Metro’s budget has increased 12%, going towards expanding its rail and bus lines, and decreasing the time between trains and buses during peak transit hours. However, despite notable service coverage and efficiency improvements, ridership is failing to recover as safety concerns continue to plague the beleaguered system.
Because LA Metro bus drivers are covered by a collective bargaining agreement, the sick-in, or calling in sick to impact service, by drivers is not a union-sanctioned effort. The one-day sick-in came after LA Metro agreed in late April to install full-length safety doors to protect drivers from violent passengers. Just days after the safety door announcement, a transient who refused to pay a bus fare violently attacked a bus driver in a video that went viral, highlighting the challenges faced by public transit drivers in the increasingly lawless city.

California proposes to hire illegal immigrants for taxpayer state jobs At Univ. of Cali schools
Reform California Chairman Carl DeMaio is blasting an assembly bill that Democrats in the California State Legislature are proposing that will direct the University of California system to begin hiring illegal immigrants for taxpayer-funded state jobs.
"I have seen a lot of outrageous proposals from California Democrat politicians, bending over backwards to make it easier for illegal immigrants to get in and to get taxpayer benefits. But this one absolutely tops the list of insane ideas," DeMaio told Fox News Digital.
If passed, Assembly Bill 2586 would provide state government jobs at taxpayers’ expense for illegal immigrants. DeMaio said specifically, it mandates that illegal immigrants with no U.S. work authorization should be given access to apply for and take jobs provided through taxpayer-funded universities run by the state government.

Sparks fly between Supermayor Tiffany Henyard and Lori Lightfoots at chaotic Dolton Board meeting
It was all but a bench-clearing brawl inside Dolton Village Hall on Monday night.
Tempers had simmered for hours as village residents chided Mayor Tiffany Henyard for dodging questions about village business and spending.
"It doesn't matter how many questions we ask you. You don't ever answer," said Vivian, a meeting attendee.
Henyard repeatedly fired back. But it was the silent, lurking presence of Chicago's former mayor-turned paid private investigator Lori Lightfoot that severed any sense of order.
Four of Dolton's six trustees initially hired Lightfoot in April to dig into the Henyard's spending and village records. And Monday night, trustees moved to override a mayoral veto on paying Lightfoot to carry out that investigation.

Illinois Lawmakers Pass Bill To Reclassify 'Offenders' as 'Justice-Impacted Individuals'
llinois lawmakers this week passed a bill that would redesignate some "offenders" as "justice-impacted individuals" in state law, drawing criticism from Republicans.
The proposed law, House Bill 4409, would replace the term "offenders" with "justice-impacted individuals" in referring to men and women enrolled in the state's "Adult Redeploy Illinois" initiative, which aims to keep some offenders out of prison by sending them to rehabilitation programs. The bill's sponsor, state representative Kelly Cassidy (D.), said that the "offender" label "does not seem appropriate for a system in which we intend to return people to full participation in society," Chicago's WGN9 reported.
The change comes as agencies under the Biden administration have called for more "inclusive" language in referring to criminals. The Air Force Academy in 2022 barred cadets from using the word "terrorists," the Washington Free Beacon reported. Biden's Department of Homeland Security in 2021 asked officials to stop using terms such as "illegal alien" and instead opt for "undocumented individual" and "undocumented noncitizen," according to Fox News.

WGN is suing the Village of Dolton in Cook County Circuit Court for refusing to release spending records and other documents related to Mayor Tiffany Henyard’s perks and pay.
The lawsuit was filed Thursday by Nexstar Media Inc., the Irving, Texas-based owner of WGN-TV.
Last November, WGN Investigates sent Dolton a public records request, seeking copies of the agency’s credit card statements, as well as records relating to Henyard’s compensation and the cost of her taxpayer-funded vehicle.

Lightfoot never stopped her investigation into Supermayor Tiffany Henyard and Village of Dolton
Try Turkesterone with Tongkat Ali (Feminization Killer): (Buy Two Get One Free 48HR Promo) https://blackforestsupplements.com/reasonable
Lightfoot said Dolton Village Trustees are slated to take up a vote as early as Monday, June 3rd, to override Henyard’s veto of the village board’s initial move to hire Lightfoot to investigate.
She added that the veto has not stopped her from looking into Henyard’s conduct.
"We haven’t been quiet," Lightfoot told Fox 32 Chicago. "We’ve continued to do our work."
Lightfoot said she believes trustees have the votes to override Henyard, and that the investigation is warranted.
"It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen," Lightfoot said. "People of Dolton deserve a government that works for them, that’s transparent, that’s fiscally responsible."
Dolton is reportedly the target of an FBI criminal investigation and has been served multiple subpoenas by federal officials.
Lightfoot’s comment came during a taping of "Paris on Politics" which aired at 9:30 p.m. Friday.
The conversation touched on multiple topics, including her reaction to the Trump verdict, her expectations for Chicago’s hosting of the Democratic National Convention, and her thoughts on a new Bears stadium.

Deep in Golden Gate Park’s hidden brush, a small sect of San Francisco’s homeless population finds a scant resource: solitude.
Here, in hard-to-reach pockets of the park, homeless people say they’re able to escape the city’s infamous streetside encampments—and the glares of passersby.
“I can’t just sleep out in public. It’s a personal thing,” said Sean, 39, who’s lived on and off in the park for six years, and declined to give a last name. “I’m conscious of what I look like, what I’m doing.”
The number of tents in the park grew over the last year from eight to 28, according to city data analyzed by the San Francisco Chronicle. That’s the steepest increase of any city neighborhood.

A special meeting in the south suburbs got heated Friday as residents take on embattled Dolton Mayor Tiffany Henyard.
On their first vote, the board voted down a budget. With a deadline looming, they took a second vote and approved it.
Residents have accused Henyard of misusing their tax dollars.
It was a raucous atmosphere. The meeting room at the Thornton Township board was packed, which is unusual to say the least for a Friday afternoon meeting that was rescheduled from Tuesday.

Georgia police immediately enforce new squatter laws following local media investigations
Georgia’s new tougher penalties against squatters are now the law of the land.
The new law comes after a series of Channel 2 Action News investigations exposed the loophole squatters were taking advantage of.
Channel 2 consumer investigator Justin Gray has been reaching out to police departments, solicitor generals, and local magistrates to see if criminal citations are now being written to squatters.
Many of the departments tell us they are still figuring out how this is all going to work.
But the city of South Fulton has already created a special task force just to go after squatters armed with the authority of this new law.
The suspected squatters ran out the back door.
“I know everybody thinks you can go in the house and squat and sit there. That all changed the other day,” one of the responding officers said on body cam video.
“We’re basically putting these squatters on notice. The law changed,” said Lt. Jubal Rogers with the South Fulton Police Department.
It was a very different scene earlier this spring when police were called to Paul Callins DeKalb County home.
“They’ll break into your house and then use the law to stay there,” Callins said at the time.
Police body camera video was rolling as officers were handed what they suspected was a fake lease.

Supermayor Tiff Tiff cancels Township Budget Meeting to game the system
Over 50 residents came to Thornton Township headquarters Tuesday night to comment on, ask questions about, and witness the approval of the next Thornton Township budget. But after 53 minutes of waiting for the meeting to start, Supervisor Tiffany Henyard emerged and canceled the meeting due to “lack of quorum.”
According to the Illinois Open Meetings Act, for a five-member board like Thornton Township’s, a quorum of three members needs to be present to hold a meeting and vote on business. It’s unclear why it took 53 minutes to determine that a quorum wasn’t present. Additionally, a roll call was never conducted to confirm the lack of a quorum.
Trustee Chris Gonzalez was present, as was Supervisor Henyard. Absent were trustees Jerry Jones, Darlene Gray-Everett, and Carmen Carlisle. The meeting was held in the basement of township headquarters.

Financial turmoil continued to unfold in south suburban Dolton Thursday after a bank said the village failed to make a payment worth tens of thousands of dollars, which may result in police cruisers and other public works vehicles being repossessed.
According to a letter dated Feb. 14, 2024, representatives from KS StateBank are threatening to take possession of more than a dozen village vehicles, which includes six police cruisers, after the village failed to make a payment of more than $76,000 on the vehicles’ loan some nine months ago.
Lawyers for KS StateBank said in the letter, that the village and the bank entered into a Government Obligation Contract in May 2019, when the village financed 13 vehicles, for the principal amount of $332,761.50.

FBI probes Supermayor Tiffany Henyards cover up of Vegas Hotel Room Encounter
A former female employee, who was Mayor Henyard's assistant, alleges retaliation, sexual harassment and discrimination after she raised concerns about an apparent non-consensual sexual encounter between her and an unnamed village trustee. A Dolton police officer said in a separate complaint filed with the Department of Human Rights that he also faced retaliatory actions for coming forward with what he witnessed.
The incident allegedly occurred during an economic development trip to Las Vegas last May.
The trip was attended by Mayor Henyard and a handful of village representatives, including her former assistant – who filed a complaint with the Illinois Department of Human Rights and two village trustees. We are not naming the woman because NBC Chicago does not name people who possibly were a victim of an unwanted sexual encounter.

The source is a city hall employee, who requested anonymity because council member Tania Fernandes Anderson has created an "unhealthy" environment. The employee believes Fernandes Anderson is a "troubled person," who uses accusations of racism to get people to fall in line. The source discussed the challenges of having someone in the city's government who has been – in their view – hostile, verbally abusive and antisemitic.

Illegal Immigrants U-Visa scam: Fake robbery ring staged crimes to score special visa & citizenship
Federal prosecutors on Friday announced charges against five people in connection with a Chicago-based scheme that staged armed robberies so the purported victims could apply for U.S. immigration visas reserved for legitimate crime victims.
CWBChicago had been working behind the scenes on the story, but withheld publication until charges were announced at the request of our sources. Now, we can tell you the incredible details.
Officials believe hundreds of people, including some who traveled from out of town, posed as customers in dozens of businesses across Chicago and elsewhere, all hoping to win favorable immigration status by becoming “victims” of pre-arranged “armed robberies.”
During a staged hold-up in Bucktown last year, one of the “robbers” accidentally fired their gun, severely injuring a liquor store clerk, according to one source. During that caper alone, five “customers” were “robbed.”

Woke Portland just booted its pro-crime DA — and NYC should follow
Portland has ousted its soft-on-crime District Attorney, Mike Schmidt, in favor of Nathan Vasquez, a candidate backed by police unions and committed to restoring law and order. Schmidt, elected in 2020, became notorious for his leniency on crime, especially during the George Floyd protests, and his support for the decriminalization of drugs under Measure 110. The lack of prosecution and failure to address drug treatment led to an explosion of crime and a significant exodus of residents. Vasquez, a former Republican, promises to reverse these policies, focusing on public safety, rebuilding ties with law enforcement, and prosecuting crimes effectively. Portland's shift signals a broader rejection of progressive criminal justice reforms that have left the city struggling with high crime rates and public dissatisfaction.

Mayor Johnson, as well as Denver Police, responded by saying that Denver Police have better pay and they find the billboard completely ridiculous.

NYC shoplifting continues to skyrocket with 21,578 cases so far, Walgreens and Target closing
Don’t believe pro-crime progressives when they lie about public safety here in NYC: This year so far has seen 21,578 shoplifting complaints from Gotham’s retailers.
That’s a 5% increase over last year’s obscene 20,552; more than 41% of the 2024 crimes are concentrated in Manhattan.
And that’s part of an ugly, persistent trend.
Full-year numbers since 2021 have jumped from 43,892 to 59,137, an increase of almost 35% — and the real problem is surely far higher, as exhausted merchants don’t bother to report many incidents.

Gov. Newsom claims California is "National Model" for solving homelessness

Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA) was mocked after he claimed California was the “national model” for dealing with homelessness.
Announcing a $3.3 billion fund to combat homelessness in his state on Tuesday, Newson boasted, “The state of California saw a decline in veteran’s homelessness,” adding that “we have a national model.”
Although California has seen a 30% drop in veteran homeless since 2012, a 2023 federal report determined that 28% of the nation’s homeless live in California and people sleeping on the streets in the state accounted for roughly half of the entire nation’s total.
