The Best of Leticia Bufoni 2020
The women's skateboard from Brazil has reached the stage of excellence that it has today, known as one of the powerhouses of the sport in the world, much because of Letícia Bufoni. She broke the boundaries of the sport for women, when they still said they could not skate. At the age of nine, seeing the street kids skateboarding where he lived, in the East Zone of São Paulo, he asked for one for his father, Jaime. At first, he was against it, because that "was not a girl's sport", as he said at the time. With persistence, Letícia managed to convince him otherwise. Two years later, when she won an amateur championship in São Paulo, Letícia found the boost she needed to start a successful career in international skateboarding. The borders were definitely opened in 2009, when she won her first competition abroad, the Maloof Money Cup, in Orange County (USA). That same year, she was elected “Personality of the Year” by Época Magazine. In 2010, he made his debut at the X Games in Los Angeles (USA), ending with the runner-up. On the other hand, she ended the season as a world champion in skate street with the World Cup of Skateboarding. By the way, in the following three seasons (until 2013), only Letícia Bufoni led the World Cup ranking. With her talent, the Brazilian has become a frequent figure on the podium of the main competitions in the last decade. In addition to joining the Guinness Book as the skater who won the most medals in X Games - there were 11 in total, between 2010 and 2019 - Letícia also holds another historic mark: the one with the most victories in the World Cup of skateboarding. It became so iconic that in 2015 he became a character in the cult game Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5. The chance to represent Brazil at the Tokyo Games will mean for Letícia another barrier to be overcome. “This would be one of the big dreams for my career, even because it was the skateboard debut at the Olympics. It will be something very special ”, he says. The Best Of Luan Oliveira 2020
Luan Oliveira is a skating survivor. Born in the favelas of Porto Alegre, Brazil, his parents gave him up just after birth, leaving him to be raised by his grandmother. He came of age in a cluster of shanty homes where violence was a way of life, and skateboarding was about as welcome as outsiders. “Where I grew up, there were very young kids that carried around guns,” he says. “If anyone tried to get into our neighborhood, these kids would stop them at gunpoint and make sure they belonged.” Still, at the age of nine, Oliveira received a small plastic board as a gift. It sat unused for months, until Oliveira caught a glimpse of someone shredding on a skateboard. Almost immediately, something clicked. Oliveira dusted off his board and spent each day practicing at a local concrete skate plaza. It didn’t take long before the young prodigy had amassed an arsenal of tricks, and began developing an extended family – of skateboarders. Full of passion but penniless, Oliveira convinced his local skate shop to pay for his bus ticket and entry fee to compete in a street contest. He took second place in the competition, then sold his product prizes in order to pay for more bus tickets, contest fees and food. Oliveira’s skate life continued like this for several years. After each competition, he and his friends would skate all night at bus stations until the first bus arrived to take them back to Porto Alegre. Then in 2005, tragedy struck twice. Oliveira’s grandmother and his father passed away in the same week. Skateboarding became his one true family... The Best Of Yuto Horigome 2020
In 2016, Japanese-born Yuto Horigome was the best kept secret in skateboarding. Then he came to America, and after two years of non-stop traveling and intense shredding, the secret is out. All it took was two hard-hitting video parts, a plethora of magazine coverage, and a victory at the 2018 Street League Pro Open in London. Now he is one of the most in-demand skaters around the world, after signing with Nike SB and turning pro for April Skateboards. If all goes according to plan, Yuto will be at the Olympics in 2020, debuting skateboarding in his hometown of Tokyo, where his father taught him how to skate when he was seven-years-old. The only question is, which event does he skate? He can make the finals in a pro street or park contest, so only time will tell. When Yuto isn’t skating, he enjoys video games, working on his English, and trying to figure out how to use his newfound fame in Japan to meet his celebrity crush, Tsubasa Honda.
