Gigantic Wave: Andrey Karr @ Nazaré, Portugal - 2018.12.14
“This was by far, the Biggest Wave ever surfed by a Russian"
Russian Big Wave Surfer Andrey Karr, 31 years old, rode a giant monster wave in Portugal's Nazaré during the recent giant swell of December 14th, as footage continues to emerge. Locals described this wave as one of the biggest “bombs” of the day along with Tom Butler’s wave in what is by now the biggest swell of the season.
English press is already calling for a new world record on a wave ridden that same day by British Surfer Tom Butler, something that is always very speculative at this point as the record is unlikely to be confirmed until WSL Big Wave Awards, which take place in April 2019.
Pedro Miranda, the Filmaker who captured footage of both waves said on a statement to the press: “This was by far, the biggest wave ever surfed by a Russian, no doubt about it” (...) “I Don’t like to go into this world record claims and premature measuring contests, size will be officially measured in April 2019 after proper analysed by the WSL with all the angles” (…) “one thing I’m sure is that this was the biggest day of the season (so far), and the biggest waves of the day were Tom Butler’s and Andrey Karr’s, I can’t put a measure on each one, but at it’s peak both waves are not that different in size” (...) “Andrey is one of the most radical guys I know, he’s been coming to Nazaré for 3 consecutive Winters and the guy has a very committed attitude, he’s hardcore! I’m really happy for him getting a proper monster bomb here at Nazaré, he totally deserves and I’m sure he’ll shake things up in Russia as they are now well represented in the Big Wave War Race”.
Andrey Karr was teaming up with American Big Wave surfer Toby Cunningham who towed him into this monster wave, Toby was contacted by Miranda, the filmmaker who shot this footage and had the following statement "I saw that wave a long way out and saw it dredging off the ledge and made sure I gave Andrey the speed he needed to get down the face. While chasing him on the shoulder I got to see it barrel so large that I could see the lighthouse for a split second through the Barrel. I picked him up the second he kicked out of the wave.”
Andrey Karr, 31 years old from Moscow, Russia, is a Professional Big Wave Surfer that first came to Nazaré in the pursuit of big waves 3 years ago, Karr is also an experienced charger in many radical sports such Base Jumping, Wingsuit flying, High Lining, Speedflying, commonly described as a Poly Extreme Athlete.
Praia do Norte beach, near the fishing village of Nazaré, has become famous worldwide for huge waves in 2011, when Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara set a world-record for the largest wave ever surfed at 78-foot at the time, in 2017 that record was broken by Brazilian surfer Rodrigo Koxa, setting the bar at 80-foot.

Gigantic Wave: Tom Butler @ Nazaré, Portugal - 2018.12.14
British Big Wave Surfer Tom Butler, 29 years old, rode a spectacular monster wave in Portugal's Nazaré during the recent giant swell of December 14th, as footage continues to emerge. Locals described this wave as the biggest “bomb” of the day in what was the biggest swell of the season.
English press is calling this the new world record, onlookers and some surfing experts have said he had beaten the previous record of 80ft - set in November 2017 by Brazilian Rodrigo Koxa. The record is unlikely to be confirmed until WSL Big Wave Awards, which take place in April 2019.
Pedro Miranda, the Filmaker who captured this footage said on a statement to the press: “this is tricky, Tommy is a very tall guy, measuring 6ft 2inch any wave ridden by him will always look way smaller than it really is, not calling this a world record because I don’t like to go into speculation, but whatever measure you think it is, the wave will be way bigger after analysed by the WSL experts” (…) “just put there any other (smaller) guy, with a few inches of diference the wave would look way bigger” (…) “This wave will most likely win the WSL Big Wave Awards this season, still a lot of Winter ahead but the bar has been set high by Tommy, really glad for him since he is one of the most experienced Big Wave riders I know and he totally deserves it!”
Tom Butler was teaming up with German Big Wave Surfer Sebastian Steudtner who towed him into this monster wave, also on his team was Brazilian Record Holder Maya Gabeira that just rode the Biggest Wave ever ridden by a Women during last season.

Wipeout . Thiago Jacaré . Raw Footage @ Nazaré, Portugal - 2018.12.14
This raw footage shows Brazilian Big Wave Surfer, Thiago Jacaré (35 ys old), charging into the first wave of a big set in Nazaré during yesterday’s monster swell. Thiago manages to ride the wave until a bump makes him fall of his board and he gets immediately swallowed by a wall of white water, suffering an extensive hold down before resurfacing just in time to catch a quick breath, just before the next wave impact. His team mate, Big Wave Surfer David Langer, first attempts to rescue him with his jetski, but there’s no window of opportunity during the next waves of the set.
Thiago ends up taking with a total of 5 waves on the head (including the first wave) before he gets rescued by German Big Wave Surfer Sebastian Steudtner, in a moment where all teams in the water were requested to help with this rescue.
Thiago was safely taken to the beach, where a paramedic team was already expecting him with full support. Thiago managed to survive this incident without a scratch, although he was completely exhausted when he got to the beach, and he was immobilised and taken in by an ambulance, as safety measure.
Later on that same day, Thiago gave the following statement to the filmmaker who captured this footage: “This was by far the worst wipeout of my life, I barely got the chance to breath between waves, when I got to the sand I was completely exhausted, to the point I couldn’t even move” (…) “I want to thank Sebastian Steudtner for the rescue and David Langer for the tow, I won't ever forget this day!”.
Thiago Jacaré is an experienced Big Wave Surfer from Brazil, he worked many years as a professional lifeguard and has several rescue courses, Thiago is also involved in the organisation of Big Wave competitions in Brazil, when he is not chasing giant swells around the world.
