Types of Spiritual Experience

The Hierophant (V) is the fifth card of the Major Arcana in the Tarot. It represents the face of institutionalised, conventional religion and dogma, rather than the private, magical experiences of the mystery religions. He is certainly not the prince of occult doctrine. He is rather the summa totius theologiae, [the sum of all theology]. So the Hierophant is not the male equivalent of the High Priestess. Is the Hierophant even needed? It is argued that if one is to follow a spiritual path, teachers and guidance are needed - but the problem is where to look? How do you know the institution is going to help you and not hold you back? This is the first card with hierarchy represented and the Hierophant is the head of this hierarchy shown above his disciples and even on a throne! Notice, however, that he blocks the view beyond the pillars completely, no one is allowed to "see" what is beyond. The Hierophant is thus performing an identical role, symbolically, to the Devil! He is preventing the "unentitled" from "passing the portal". He is acting as The Gatekeeper. The problem of course is that he judges entitlement. His theology is all from books , none is first hand direct experience [revelation] and the Hierophant makes the decision on whether people are fit to be told the secrets his religion claims to possess. Beneath the Hierophant there may be two acolytes and their presence symbolises how knowledge is transferred - essentially preaching - but he stands in front of a mundane temple, a church or mosque, ashram or synagogue and there is no view. As Lunaea Weatherstone says "can the soul ever be constrained from what it seeks? In order to actually cure illness, one must know the cause. If only the symptoms are addressed, there may be temporary relief or even the apparent disappearance of symptoms, because they have been suppressed, but there will never be a cure. If you have to use or take medicines on a continuous basis, then you have not been cured, and the cause - a pathogen of some sort or other environmental problem such as smog, smoke, toxins, lack of nutrients or even radiation will continue to cause the illness. There are some sensitives able to diagnose that someone is ill and pinpoint the problem. They can do it using the patient's 'aura', or by using a ‘bridge’ - hair, an article of clothing, - something the patient has handled. Henri Michaux was a French speaking Belgian-born poet, artist, and writer. The Museum of Modern Art in Paris, Tate Modern and the Guggenheim Museum in New York all have examples of his paintings and drawings. He wrote travelogues, and Oriental culture became one of his biggest influences. The philosophy of Buddhism, and Oriental calligraphy, later became principal subjects of many of his poems and inspired many of his drawings. But he is perhaps best known for his drug experiments resulting in the book Miserable Miracle Mescaline. There is a tendency for drug users to assume that Michaux was a drug addict, but nothing could be further from the truth. He said: "Should we talk about pleasure? It was unpleasant ...". So why on earth did he do it? Henri treated the realms visited via drugs as a form of travel as his health declined so badly actual travel became impossible. He decided to travel via his mind instead of via his body. George Washington was the first President of the United States and the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. He was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States and presided over the convention that drafted the Constitution. During the dark days of the American revolution, George Washington had a spiritual experience of extraordinary potency. It was a vision and prophecy delivered by an angelic figure who showed him pictorially and symbolically what the future would be. The symbolism was quite obscure, as most symbolic prophecies are and shook Washington very visibly. Washington never saw this prophecy roll out to its end. There is a difference between the type of bliss that comes from soaking in a warm bath after a hard day’s gardening, and the bliss and peace experienced via spiritual experience. Although the heading says bliss and peace, the level of ‘release’ and emotion generated can result in tears. If you let go, all that is left, is a sense of massive release, where you can be you. Bliss and peace often accompanies the experience of divine love – a love of all beings, every one of our fellow creatures from the tiniest snail to the largest elephant. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is considered the most important German literary figure of modern times. He was a poet, playwright, theatre director, novelist, scientist, critic, artist and statesman. Automatic writing or psychography is writing produced whilst in a trance or semi-hypnotised condition. Automatic drawings are drawings done the same way. The person does not control the writing implement or its movement across the paper - because they are not conscious or are only semi-conscious. Abu Hamid bin Abu Bakr Ibrahim is better known by his pen-names Farid ud-Din and ‘Attar ("the perfumer"). Attar was from Nishapur in what is now Iran. He was a mystic, a poet, and a master of narrative who travelled widely to Baghdad, Basra, Kufa, Mecca, Medina, Damascus, Khwarizm, Turkistan, and India, meeting with Sufi Shaykhs - and returned promoting Sufi ideas. Attar reached an age of over 70, but died a violent death in the massacre which the Mongols inflicted on Nishapur in April 1221. Reinhold Messner is a mountaineer, adventurer, explorer and writer from Brixen (Bressanone) in Italy’s South Tyrol region. He is renowned for making the first solo ascent of Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen and for being the first climber to ascend all fourteen "eight-thousanders" - peaks over 8,000 metres (26,000 ft) above sea level - without oxygen. Perhaps less well known is that he crossed Antarctica on skis, and completed a 2,000-kilometre (1,200 mi) expedition through the Gobi desert. His first major Himalayan climb in 1970 was the unclimbed Rupal face of Nanga Parbat, Both he and his brother Günther Messner reached the summit, but Günther died two days later on the descent of the Diamir face. Reinhold not only lost his brother, but also lost six toes from frostbite. Firewalking is the act of walking barefoot over a bed of hot embers , stones or even lava. It has symbolic meaning for those on the 'three degrees' of the Spiritual Path. - The first degree is Judgement to prepare and select those who will proceed - The second degree is Purgatory and thus Rebirth. - The third degree is Purification for those who survive rebirth When an initiate on the Spiritual Path was due to experience Rebirth - they were tested to see whether they had learnt what was needed to go through with it. Pete Townshend is an English rock musician, composer, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, songwriter, author and the guitarist for the rock group The Who. Townshend is and was the primary songwriter for The Who, having written well over 100 songs for the band's 12 studio albums. Although known primarily as a guitarist, he also plays keyboards, banjo, accordion, harmonica, ukulele, mandolin, violin, synthesiser, bass guitar and drums. He is self-taught on all of these instruments. Townshend was one of the first major rock stars to turn against the use of drugs and wrote about it in 1970. He became a very devoted follower of Meher Baba, and it was Meher Baba’s influence that helped him turn away from drugs. His 2012 autobiography is called Who I Am. Albert de Rochas d'Aiglun was a leading French historian, and well respected researcher, who was made a Chevalier (Knight) in the Legion d'Honneur in 1875 and an officer in 1889. Rochas is now best known for his extensive parapsychological research and in this video we provide his case history of Françoise Fontaine, who appeared to be being pursued by an 'evil spirit' wishing to possess her. So uncontrollable were its attacks she had asked for help, and the case history is an account of her exorcism by the priests of Louvier church. More than 1,000 to 1,200 people, both Catholic and Huguenot were witnesses. Despite using holy water, confession, prayers, Mass, and candles they almost lost Francoise three times as she shot up in a trance. "And it needed the help of five to six people, to grasp her ", and hold her down. She almost lost her battle, at one point she was even turned upside down. Perceptions act like a log of everything that happens to us. It is a little like a cine film, but with the addition of all our sensations - smell, taste, sights, sounds, touch and emotions. People who have near death experiences sometimes go through this log, and it is then called a "past life review". They feel as though they have lived their current life again. But there are some people - principally young children - who seem to be able to relive a life that wasn't theirs. Children are able to have these experiences up until the age of four or five. The past lives they remember are often those where the end of life has been unexpected, possibly violent and accompanied by trauma. This type of spiritual experience is rarely described, and rarely mentioned. Occasionally it creeps into Near Death Experiences. And yet it is a profound Mystic experience of great import. In many experiences generated by extreme emotion, the emotion generating the experience is negative. But it is also possible to provoke a spiritual experience via intense and overwhelming happiness and euphoria. The spiritual experience usually comes at the time the happiness was felt – at the time the event that caused all this happiness occurred. A near death experience or NDE is what people experience when they almost die, or they die and are resuscitated. The experience has been used for millenia as an indicator of what happens on death. Pope Gregory the Great, in the sixth century, collected descriptions of these experiences. Whether someone has a NDE when they are close to death, seems to depend on how close to death they were. A person might suffer a cardiac arrest or other life threatening event but not, in reality, be at risk from dying – those who have a NDE have been. Some people have even had their death warrant signed.
