When Even Plan C Fails...
Spring has been SO busy on the homestead. As a result, I've had little time for backpacking. So, when I finally did get some free time, I decided to give this trip I was looking forward to a shot. Although parts would be challenging, I felt up to the task. But sometimes months of meticulous research and careful planning aren’t enough. Sometimes a back-up plan isn’t enough either...
Please check out the trail journal where I share even more pictures and stories from this misadventure as well as some takeaways from the experience: https://seagrasstosassafras.com/post/pisgah-loop-fail

Advice for Hiking the Art Loeb Trail
The terrain is rough, water is scarce, and sometimes it’s hard to tell which way to go. Despite all of that, the Art Loeb is an incredible journey! After two thru-hikes and several more section hikes, I've learned a lot about this trail. Today I'd like to share 5 pieces of advice for backpacking the Art Loeb. You'll find even more info and advice on the topic on my blog: https://seagrasstosassafras.com/post/artloebadvice
Please check out the guide I put together from this trip! It helps me to keep doing what I do. Detailed mileage & elevation profiles, a list of planning resources, shuttle and logistics recommendations, and three possible itinerary options all in one neatly organized PDF. (While it isn’t a substitute for doing your own research and preparation, hopefully it will take the guess work out of planning your own trip.)

Art Loeb Southbound | 30 Mile Solo Thru Hike
“You won, this time. But you are as big as you are ever going to get. And I’m still growing.” – Sir Edmund Hillary
On April 21st 2021, I fell face first into bed caked in mud, sweat, tears, and even blood. I had just spent the last 48 hours getting licked by the Art Loeb. It was one of the hardest things I’d ever done. Sometime later, I decided I would give it another try. I wanted a do-over. But before I could, I had to be the kind of person that would appreciate this trail for the arduous but incredibly worthwhile journey that it was. I needed to grow…

Answering Your Hiking and Backpacking Questions | 2023 Q&A
Happy New Year! I hope 2023 is off to a great start for everyone. Today I’ll be answering some of the questions that YOU submitted. Everything from satellite communicators to fears about wildlife. Thank you to everyone who submitted questions! I had SO MANY come in that, unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get to all of them. If you did submit multiple questions, I do apologize in advance that I was only able to answer one or two. There’s always next time! 😊 I also had to record parts of this video on three different days, so there will be changes in costume and scenery throughout the program. I hope you enjoy this Winter Q&A.

Winding Stair Gap to NOC | Backpacking in Nantahala National Forest
“The most important reason for going from one place to another is to see what’s in between, and they took great pleasure in doing just that.” -Norton Juster (The Phantom Tollbooth)
Barrett and I made some great memories here the year before while completing the Standing Indian loop. This year, we picked up just a few miles North of where we left off, and just in time to admire the full display of Fall colors! We took great pleasure in see what was in between Winding Stair Gap and the Nantahala Outdoor Center. And I hope you take great pleasure in watching our three-day trip through the Gold Tunnel play out. Hike + Message Series #6 Day Hike at Grandfather Mountain State Park
Hey Friends! Keeping up the tradition of an annual trip to Grandfather Mountain. This year is a little bit different from our past visits because of our four legged family members. Sorry Barrett and Nora no ladders and cables for you! We did a dog friendly day hike to Storyteller Rock overlook followed by a picnic at Julian Price Memorial Park. HEADS UP! The path to the overlook is right beside a campsite in the park. So, if you plan to take this hike yourself please be respectful of the folks who reserved the site. I've been in that situation before, and let me tell you it is not fun. For more info about the adventure opportunities at Grandfather Mountain, check out this post on my blog: seagrasstosassafras.com/post/grandfather-trip-report
On the way back to the trailhead, Jordan and I had a great conversation about worship. Which lead us to make this into a new episode of Hike + Message. If you came for the hike, I highly encourage you to stay for the message portion as well. As always, thank you for watching, and I hope you enjoy!

Roan Mountain | Backpacking on the AT
In August of 2022, I set out on another three day adventure with my trusty canine companion. Together we trekked a little over 20 miles across the Roan massif making stops at the many historic sites along the way like Cloudland Hotel and Yellow Mountain Gap (Overmountain shelter) I read so much about this unique part of Appalachia over the years, it was finally time to experience it for myself. If you're wondering what makes Roan such a special place, I think this quote from an old Cloudland brochure answers it perfectly: "No pen can picture the grandeur of the mountain view... Too great for description, too lovely to paint, it can only be realized by actual presence." For more stories from this adventure, read the trail journal on my blog: seagrasstosassafras.com/post/roanmountain.

Backpacking Food for Dogs
Hey Friends, Let’s talk about what I feed my dogs, Barrett and Nora, on backpacking trips. There are a lot of options out nowadays. These are just a few example of what my dogs enjoy and what works for them.

Jones Gap State Park Summer 2022
In the same way that I try to make a trip to Grandfather Mountain every year, I try to do the same thing with Jones Gap. The truth is I’m not a fan of Summer backpacking. Brutal heat, swarms of bugs, and rampant poison ivy… need I go on? BUT ever year around July or August, when I start to miss the trail, I make a trip out to Jones Gap and it holds me over until Fall. I hope you enjoy this video from our short but sweet overnight adventure.

Basecamp Trip in Panthertown Valley
Thanks so much for watching this highlight reel from our basecamping trip to Panthertown Valley. There’s no itinerary or trail journal for this outing. On our trip we checked out Schoolhouse Falls, Tranquility Point, and Sandbar Pool. I know y’all are probably going to ask for the location of our campsite, but I’m going to keep this card close to the vest 😉
We used both Burt Kornegay’s "A Guide's Guide to Panthertown" and Gaia GPS. In our personal experience the guide was worth investing in for planning purposes, but Gaia GPS was far more helpful when actually navigating the area. Again, that was just our experience. You can purchase the guide here: https://www.panthertownmap.com/order/guides-guide
Heads up: An order was signed into effect May of 2022 now requiring any food or refuse be contained in a bear-resistant container (approved by the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee). You can read the actual order here: fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd1025064.pdf You can also see the list of bear resistant containers approved by the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee here: igbconline.org/programs/bear-resistant-products/ *Ursak Major and Allmitey are on List A. If you don’t have an approved container you can utilize one of the three bear storage lockers in Panthertown. Supposedly there are plans to install more of them in the area. Read about that here: fs.usda.gov/detail/nfsnc/news-events/?cid=FSEPRD1025111 Hope this info helps!

Yonah Mountain - Overnight Backpacking Trip May 2022
Yonah Mountain boasts some incredible views! It's also known for being an incredibly crowded and highly trafficked destination, but Nora and I managed to find a window of peace and quiet up there. Despite the disadvantages that come with popularity, this trail is a great 5 mile out and back trip for beginner and experienced backpackers alike. My best advice is: try to go on a weekday. Be sure to check out the trail journal/trip report for more info and stories from this overnight adventure. You can read that HERE: seagrasstosassafras.com/post/yonah

Back on Black Balsam - Overnight Backpacking Trip April 2022
I’m sure you can say this about ALL mountains, but this one really has a way of being unpredictable. A forecast of mild temperatures and sunshine can turn to high speed winds and impenetrable fog in an instant. And for some reason I just keep coming back for more. What can I say? I just love Pisgah National Forest. In my opinion, it's one of the most beautiful places God ever made. Sorry friends, no itinerary or trail journal for this one.

How Backpacking Has Changed For Me
Hey Friends!
I wanted to take some time today to share how backpacking has changed for me over the years. And by that I don't mean gear upgrades or growing in experience necessarily. What I mean is the many roles it's played in my life from when I first started out to now. It's been an interesting journey so far, and I'm so excited to see how backpacking continues to change for me throughout my life going forward. At the end of each "chapter" of the video I included montages with footage and pictures from the trips I took during each of these times in my life. Hopefully you enjoy some of what's shared here today. What role has backpacking played in your own life? And how has it changed for you over time? I love hearing your stories, so be sure to let me know in the comments.

Overnight Camping Trip on Lake Jocassee - Devils Fork SP
Sometimes it's hard to find the time to take a full weekend long backpacking trip. So, what's the next best thing? An overnight getaway on the most beautiful Lake I know. I decided to pack a tennis ball in Nora's bag this time... As you'll see, that was the whole highlight of the experience for her 🤦♀️
I hope you enjoy our short camping adventure at Devils Fork State Park.

Uwharrie - Dutchmans Creek Loop February 2022
In the midst of a long snowy Winter, a window of perfect weather opened up. Mid 60s during the day, low 40s at night, and plenty of sunshine! So we packed up our bags and headed out to Uwharrie National Forest. I can't think of better way to spend the first backpacking trip of 2022 than a 19 mile trek with the folks I love most.

Hike + Message Series #5 Don't Let THESE Things Push You Away From God!
We're all in different places in life, and I know my experiences won't look exactly like yours. But if you've encountered a bad or negative situation in the church or with a group of believers I want to encourage you today. Whether it's hypocrisy, false teachings, abandonment, or even your own convictions PLEASE don't let it drive you away from the faith and seeking a meaningful relationship with God. I hope you enjoy this hike + message and I pray you will find hope and comfort in it today. (Skip ahead to the message at 2:35)

Hiking + Message Series #2 Santee Canal Park
Here's #2 in what I hope to make a regular series of videos: Come for the Hike. Stay for the Message. Where I combine the dayhikes I go on with what I'm learning in my walk with Jesus.
Today Barrett and I are hiking the trails at our favorite local park. Afterwards we talk about TRUTH and how the places we go to for truth impact daily life.
