Rigging a Secondary Lead: 3 Options
Simple concept for rigging when on a secondary lead. To finish it off you can either:
1) Swing the top back to the main
2) Redirect and rig off the secondary
3) Span rig off the secondary
Hope this makes sense and gets you thinking about options. I show it here with an omni-block but this can also be done with an x-ring.

Port-a-wrap - Adding a Top Strap
The port-a-wrap is the jack of all trades in rigging, but the one thing that it doesn't do very well, in my opinion, is negative rigging. Let's look at adding a top strap to try and fight the floppiness of the device when using it as a lowering device.

Trucker's Hitch - Old School Method
I have shown this method many times over the years, but I normally show it with a carabiner or pulley at the anchor. The method shown here is better when you have a solid anchor point that must be passed around, rather than a carabiner or piece of hardware that can open. Hope this makes sense and you can get some value out of it.

Basal Anchor Drop Test

Setting a Rigging Line Out of Reach, this is 1 way
This is 1 way of setting a rigging line when the piece is just out of reach. You can tie a throwing knot, throw it through the branch union and feed it all the way to the ground. Then you feed a bight of line on the other side of the union. Someone on the ground can then tie a running knot and run it up to the piece and then take all of the slack out. Hope this makes sense guys.

Rigging: Natural Crotch, X-Rings, or Blocks?
People often ask me: "what's your favorite rigging hardware?" Well, my best answer is, don't be ideological about it, instead be deliberate and thoughtful about your setups. When I was coming up I started with natural crotch rigging, it's what we used for almost everything. I still do a ton of natural crotch rigging. But I'm also obsessed with X-rings. And I use blocks and pulleys when it makes sense to. Every single situation is different. Sometimes you need very low friction. Other times friction can be your best friend. Rigging is like everything else, it's so easy to get into a rut and just do things the same way, over and over. So striving to keep an open mind about my setups and to be situationally dependent is so important. Use what makes sense for the situation. Strive to be an Educated Climber :)
