Colorado Children's Extensive Support (CES) Waiver for Developmental Disabilities
Whether you're a parent, teacher, clinician, or medical provider, this episode is for you –especially if you know of or work with children who have (or might have) a developmental disability.
Sabrina Bussard (Respite Essentials, LLC) talks about Colorado's Child Extensive Support (CES) waiver, criteria for eligibility, how to apply, the eligibility determination process, and what specific supports and services are available through the waiver. As you’re about to hear, the application process is long and rather complex. But a key takeaway is that Respite Essentials helps Western Colorado families with navigating the application process.
Respite Essentials, LLC, is a small, family-owned company in Grand Junction, Colorado, that provides support services for caregivers of children who are on the CES, including homemaker services and respite care for parents, as well as community-based experiences for children. You can reach her at (970) 822-9693 or visit the Respite Essentials website (https://respiteessentials.my.canva.site/) for more information and resources.

My child is struggling in school... Now what? (Kim Maurin, Academic Language Therapist, Vector LLC)
An academic language therapist/executive function coach discusses the first steps you should take if you suspect your child has a learning struggle. What to do when contacted by your child’s school, what mindset you need to adopt, who’s in charge of this process, how to work with the school’s educational team, basic options available to you and your student, as well as their associated pros and cons, costs, and much more.
Kim focuses on four primary options available to parents:
1) Do nothing (non-intervention).
2) Request a school evaluation.
3) Seek a dyslexia/learning assessment (private sector).
4) Seek a comprehensive neurodevelopmental evaluation (private sector).
Importantly, Kim makes the point that you (as the parent) "drive the bus" of your child's learning and development.
Timestamps:
2:09 Emotions that you may feel.
3:53 These struggles run in families.
5:28 At first, the school may want you (parent) to do more at home.

9:48 Bring support.
11:38 This process may bring up old trauma for parents.

Sensory & Behavior: The Vestibular System (Kathy Den, Individual Matters)
Kathy Den, occupational therapist, explains how behavior, learning, and development is affected by a sensory component called "vestibular processing."
What is vestibular processing, and why does it matter?
What are the symptoms of vestibular delays in children?
When should parents be concerned?
How are vestibular problems assessed and treated?
What can parents and teachers do today to support vestibular sensory development in their children?
The vestibular system shapes our identities in subtle but definable ways. While children generally won’t outgrow a sensory processing problem, the good news is that these problems generally respond very well to therapy. A thorough sensory evaluation can help parents and physicians and teacher pick out which struggles are based on sensory issues (and which might be due to something else) and develop targeted therapy solutions that improve functioning and development.
Kathy Den, OTR/L, is a graduate of Boston University Sargent College of Allied Health Professions and has over 30 years’ experience as an occupational therapist. She has worked in a variety of settings including home health with newborns, outpatient pediatric services, and schools, and she joined Individual Matters in 2019. Kathy specializes in sensory processing, learning disabilities, developmental delays, and ADHD. She is certified in Ayres Sensory Integration intervention and is a certified Clinical Specialist in Autism Spectrum Disorder.
