My previous 12v power setup in the Jeep XJ was a Banner 12v 115ah AGM Deep Cycle Battery with a number of ports mounted into the Jeeps Trim. It served us pretty well for about five years but lacked in power output, fast charging and it was also permanently installed and heavy. This is probably the last episode for a while with me working on the Jeep. There are a few more things to do like an SYE kit, Gullwing Window Storage, Swaybar Disconnects and a Synthetic Winch Line. BUT this will come later down the line and in my spare time. Now its time to load up some camp gear and actually use this thing before the next winter comes around. Now that the rear is done and driving well its time to regear the High Pinion Dana 30 on the front of the XJ. I didn't get so lucky on the pinion depth on this one so it was a good job I had a full set of setup bearings. It took up to 20 configurations to get things how they needed. I'm no expert and a novice when it comes to changing gears so this video is pretty long and it shows my successes and regrets to achieve the results of getting 4.88 running in the Chrysler 8.25 29 Spline. I chose Elite Gear 4.88 with the Timken bearings rebuild kit. This kit retails for about $570 on eBay. Elite gears are machined from 8620 alloy steel, they also claim to have a very high heat treat standard along with a lapping process to ensure a quiet mesh. Time to work on rear storage. Back in 2018 on our Europe trip we had a basic drawer system but when we weren't using it, it took up a lot of space. We use the Jeep for a range of adventures so versatility has always been priority with internal space. This time round we agreed on a simple pull out platform that will allow us to pull out the content of the rear for easy access but also not take up too much space when camping wasn't on the menu. I used heavy duty 100kg draw runners to make the platforms as strong as possible although its obviously an overkill. We will be using a DOMETIC Tropicool TCX-14, my home made MSR stove system, a basic Storage Box and an Ecoflow River Pro battery system a log with a wash basin and some other smaller storage organisers on this platform. It been about seven years of hard work building up the Jeep Cherokee XJ and I thought I would make a video recapping most of it. There have been many variations of lift, mods prior to this stage but many failed or just got replaced over time with something better. I've invested a great deal of time and money into the project and at this stage I would like to think that most of the costly, time consuming jobs are done. I have taken mine as far as it can go with the hardware it has and after this video I will roll the jeep back to a lower lift height and restore some drivability into it. There is still much I want to do, Gears, 3 Link Longarm Kit, bigger Disk Brakes and Lockers, but Its been a long winter of working on it and now I want to USE it. The gears and lowering the lift I will do next just to restore drivability for the coming trips. I was asked a while ago from subscriber about the spout I have on the Rotopax Water Container. Now that the Jeep is up and running again I have begun working on some of gear that's going in and onto the Jeep and I thought I would touch on the spouts while I'm replacing them. The spouts I use are just generic water container spouts from the local fuel station and they can be found almost all over Europe in the same style but with a different cap. All you need to do is boil some water and heat them up, pull them apart and pop the tap inside the original Rotopax Lid. Then add an O-ring and that's basically it. They are really cheap, readily available (for me) and you can carry a couple spare just in case they brake one day on a trip and you need to replace them. I have provided some links below to sites that sell them but bear in mind that you find these general taps for much cheaper on eBay and in general stores. I couldnt find any in the USA that looked like the ones that I use but the official Rotopax Spigot isnt that expensive, its just a big longer. Thanks for watching. After the failed test drive with the GT2871R clone I decided to choose a more suitable turbo charger for my 425OHV Engine, a genuine Garrett GT2052. The GT2871R is a duel ball bearing turbo with a very fast spool up but due to the size of the compressor wheels it takes a lot of exhaust gas to get that them moving. The best I could get out of it was it coming in at 3000rpm which is extremely late on the rpm range for this engine and basically useless low end where the power is needed. The GT2052 is comparable in size to the old VA180069 stock turbo originally in the MK1 425OHV although it can push more boost and spool up very fast. The modification seems to have paid off although finer tuning could be done with regards to fuel and boost to get a safe but more powerful setup. This is something I have little knowledge in doing and thus begins another chapter. While waiting for the Turbo I've moved onto the interior to keep the progress going on the build. I haven't run carpets or headliner now for about seven years and despite the practicality with corrosion control and water the drone of the Jeep is getting a bit much. Obviously the tires play a big part of the noise in the cab but ultimately my plan is to take out the vibration of the sheet metal with Salento Coat. I considered many alternatives but went with silent coat as it will help thermally with its reflective coating, but also there was a 40% off deal. Its easy to use but its best to deal with any corrosion or body work before installing. Also consider the weight your adding to the Jeep which in my case is 28kg of material. A same side intercooler with 2 inch piping is going in. This should reduce some lag with narrower and shorter piping as well as tidy up the front end a bit. First though I need to remove the radiator and move it back 3-4cm to allow the new intercooler to fit. This should be the last piece of the puzzle and after this install it will be the first real test drive since July 2021. I know, another engine video, but due to the electrical problems I have has since building this engine I thought this would be a big step in the right direction. I was going to put off this fuel pump swap until next winter, but given all the advice and comments I received from others who have done the job, I thought why not. Swapping out the electronically controlled Bosch fuel pump with a Bosch mechanical VE pump has its advantages for a setup like mine. Tunability should be much simpler and the engine no longer needs a MAF, Number 1 Injector, Crank Position Sensor, Foot Pedal Sensor, Emissions Control Unit and most of the under the bonnet ECU. Most of this stuff us expensive and not really necessary for what I'm doing with my Jeep. Winter wheeling in deep snow has previously been a bit sketchy on standard rims with 5psi pressures to maintain flotation. As the winter moves forward the snow gets deeper so staying up high on the snow is the only way to move forward, unless your on 52s with portal axles or tank tracks.... I'm keen to get out and do some exploring and camping on the back side of winter, and its the back side that's the tough side...... ;) Hopefully now I can lower tire pressures to 5psi and keep the tire on the rim. This pressure has always served me well when in deep snow but at least with a one sided beadlock I might have a better chance of getting home without too many issues. After many weeks the sponsored turbo I was waiting on never arrived, so I decided to purchase one based upon the specs I was looking for. Its a clone GT2871R Duel Ceramic Ball Bearing Turbo and it seems like a very good quality one from the initial inspections and data supplied with it. I have dismantled it to rotate the cartridge and while doing that I checked the quality of the internals which look very good. It has no shaft play a bullit compressor wheel and an internal oil restrictor. Hopefully it lives up to its good looks and functions as intended but I just need to wait on the oil lines so I can get it plumbed in. This video is just an update and more of a show and tell of the whole setup with the manifold, mainly to show the concept I was aiming for. In the next video I will check the waste gate pressure, change the oil, coolant, fire up the engine as see what kind of boost and temps I have. Now that I have the Chrysler Voyager Exhaust Manifold and the Ford Scorpio Inlet Manifold for the VM, I want to try and relocate the turbo and make a T25 manifold adapter. This should allow me to run a broader range of turbos that use T2 flanges. It should also make dealing with any maintenance issues much easier as the turbo will be located next to the engine. It could all be a waste of time but I quite enjoy tinkering around and I can always default back to the original setup if need be. All I need now is to select a turbo charger and install it in episode 2. In this video I remove my rear side windows on the XJ and build some Gullwing Windows that can hold the Rotopax container and also later be used with an internal storage system. I previously deleted the rear windows about two years ago and replaced them with an aluminium panel that I mounted back in using the original window seal. Since rebuilding the drip rails and painting I decided to go with a gullwing window and later build a inner storage box with a shelf. The cam locks still have not arrived but in the next episode I will build the inner box and mount the locks. I used internal 170 degree cabinet hinges for the gullwings which required a simple bracket construction on the inside at the top. You can also mount them on the bottom if you would preferer an additional surface. Its not a mod for everyone as it can make breaking into the jeep easier but if you wheel or travel it could be a good option for side access recovery gear, a camp kitchen, trail tools or whatever you can think of. Before I get stuck into pulling parts off of the engine I thought I would cover some of the changes I have been running with over the last few years with the 2.5 VM Diesel Engine. This engine obviously comes as standard with the European Export XJ but its reputation is poor based upon some its issues with the older head design, gaskets and cooling system. All of that coupled together made head cracking a common problem. I've made a number of changes to my engine over the years to improve reliability and performance. AMC Cylinder Heads, Front Mounted Intercooler, EGR Delete, Oil Catch Can, Turbo Charger, Snorkel and Exhaust. ALl really to help the engine breath a bit better and drop those EGT temps. Spraying Raptor Liner is really easy and its a forgiving tactile paint that's perfect for rugged look on all 4x4s. I've used it on parts of the Jeep XJ for the last few years and its help up very well as a durable coating. Its chip resistance isnt great so its not advised to use it as a stone guard, but on sliders, armour, fenders and bumpers its ideal for its abrasion resistance. Now that the new drip rails are welded in, its time to prime and paint all the prepared surfaces and do a little detailing to make the Jeep XJ pretty again. I love the colour of my XJ so I wont be spraying the whole thing, but coating the bottom of the doors inside and out, door jams, box rockers, sliders, fenders, armour, bumpers and tire carrier. As well as the roof. Its a lot of painting and because I have already used Raptor on my roof and other parts I shouldn't need more than 5L to complete the job. In this video I cover some equipment, materials and products used across this whole project as well and demonstrate spraying the paint, along side some reassembly tips to prevent further corrosion. I've been using Upol Raptor Liner now for the past three years on the XJ. Mostly on key areas that see wear and impact from forest roads or offroad abuse. Its a durable bedliner paint that offers tough protection and it works well on DIY fabrications for 4wds to give a professional finish and long lasting protection. Do the claims really stack up to the reality though with this paint and how does it deal with repeated impacts and abrasion. I personally love Raptor paint but it has to be said that it has its weaknesses and should not be seen as a blanket solution for all areas of a vehicle. This video was meant to go up yesterday but there were some technical difficulties with YouTube. My 1999 Jeep Cherokee XJ was one of the Factory 2.5vm Turbo Diesels that was exported to the UK in RHD. In this video i do a brief overview of the engine, mainly the top end, looking at its pros and cons and also some of the slight changes I have made to my engine to gain more power and reliability. The engine came in a range of different vehicles and had a relatively poor reputation due to a few issues with its original cylinder heads. Sadly bad reputations are hard to shift but over all I think the engine has some strong positives and it has served me very well over many long and short trips around Europe in a range of extreme temperatures. In this video I go over a lot of details and its probably one for the enthusiasts. I am preparing for some drastic modifications to the engine bay which may involve manifold fabrication and custom intercooler piping. Its been about four years since I last did any major work on the Drip Rail on the Jeep Cherokee XJ. My last attempt was made with a lack of better knowledge and the use of the wrong materials which has resulted in a revisited job. My drip rail has had an issue with corrosion in-between the seam for the entitle time i've owned the vehicle. This is normally the frist place for rust to start on older cars and its also the last place that can find it because its not visible until its too late. Four years back I stripped the roof back, wire wheeled any corrosion, welded in some new metal and U-channel and patted myself on the back. Well the rust has continued to grown in the seam because I couldn't get to it, so this time I'm cutting out the entire side of the roof, separating the drip rail seam and making a new seamless one from 2mm box section that's been cut to form a moulding. Its a hell of a job and I would consider it major surgery but its got to be done if I intend on carrying a roof rack and gear on it. I get asked a lot of questions over Instagram PM and Facebook about Things to Consider Before Buying and Building a Jeep Cherokee XJ. Also what are some of the things to consider before you buy one with regards to the work that's involved in restoring and making it look smart and rust free. I've spent almost 7 years working on mine almost weekly and spent over £25,000 on materials like paint, primer, grinding wheels, tools and parts for the Jeep. I do all the work myself from engine work to body work so if you bought one and had to take it to a garage for all of this work it would cost you an ridiculous amount of money. Remember though that this is just how I want to do things. I get a huge kick out of self achieving and I have a perfectionist edge so I can be quite obsessive about the work I do. You might not be like this at all and your experiences with be totally different to mine. Its also my hobby and kind of a passion of mine. I enjoy building, restoring and using my Jeep, seeing what brakes and improving it. This may sound like a massive waste of money to some people and the definition of insanity but that's what I like to do and I work for it. I'm no expert and i've made a lot of mistakes which has cost me more down the line. This video is just my experience and honesty from my own perspective of owning, restoring and building this old XJ, and don't read me wrong, I really enjoy the work and I would probably do it again with my son if he wanted too. In Episode 01 we spent a few days making our wat to Jokkmokk. We have been in Jokkmokk for three days now checking out the local area, seeing friends and staying with Arctic Circle Kennel who put us up for a few nights in his Airbnb. Its been an great trip so far and in this episode we leave Jokkmokk and travel North to a Lancaster Bomber crash site, abandoned copper mining settlement followed by some wilderness camping and campsites. In this Episode, Megan, Max and I load up the Jeep XJ and start driving North towards Jokkmokk to spend two weeks 4wd camping and exploring the North of Sweden. Our last trip in 2020 was when Max was very young so it will be interesting to see how this trip goes now hes 18 months. The Jeep is fully loaded with a lot more gear than I expected given all three of us are on board and its quite a contrast from my minimal solo trips. Its reminding me that I need to regear this thing and install an SYE kit before next summer so that hill climbs and heavy loads are not an issue. In the last video I failed to fix my rear leaf springs and two weeks after the video they actually started to bed the other way. I decided to accept that they were dead and bought a pair of Rubicon Express 5.5" lifted leaf springs. Knowing that these would probably amount to 7.5" with the Shackle Relocation Brackets I needed to make a decision on lifting the front or fabricating new shackles for the back. This video is a bit of a mish mash of installing a lift kit and some custom DIY budget trouble shooting resulting in a 'just getting away with it' but definitely needing an SYE and Long Arms in the near future!
