Workshop To Wilderness

In this video I talk about my timing issues Tuning the Bosch VE Pump on my Jeep Cherokee XJ. I also install a new fuel pin for more power! One year ago I swapped the electronic Bosch diesel pump out of my 1999 Jeep Cherokee XJ 2.5td and swapped in an earlier 0460404078 Mechanical VE Pump. The end result was a less sensor dependant engine with better tuning for boost and more power. Its about a year later and after running and testing the Jeep across the summer and winter the pump needed some adjustments. I had the pump setup too retarded and the advance timing plunger was on constantly advancing the timing, but not quite enough in the piston stroke. After disabling the plunger and manually advancing the timing by rotating the pump, its eliminated rough starts, exhaust smoke and most of all very high EGT's. The end result is a very noticeable power gain top end in high load situations but with drastically lower EGT's by as much as 200c. This video is in response to the messages and emails I am getting for people doing the mechanical pump swap. Hopefully this helps you get to the desired outcome faster than I did. In the last video I started on the Jeep XJ WJ Knuckle and Brake Swap on the Dana 30 HP. I ran into some issues with the pre 99 unit bearings and clearance between the calipers and 15" wheels. In this video I Install the WJ Knuckles and Brakes on my Jeep Cherokee XJ while setting up OTK high steer and a wheel alignment. I have wanted to do a WJ steering knuckle and brake swap for the last two years and I finally have all the parts to do the build. My Jeep is a RHD so It took some time to locate part 5012517AB which I found in Russia and was kindly sent over. In this video I do the knuckle and brake swap, set up a one ton high steer setup, a wheel alignment and build some high steer sway bar brackets. Its a complete install from start and almost to finish. I'm waiting on some inner axle sleeves, outer seals and inner seals to complete the build and that will be in the next video. Me and the Jeep XJ head out Overland Solo Camping into an area I haven't visited in several years. Its a place that looks very different in the winter and i'm fortunate because its been partly ploughed for logging, allowing me access from the main road. Konditions have ranged from -32c to +1c over the last four days and the snow is changing rapidly. Its becoming dense, heavy and hard to push. Me and the Jeep XJ head out Solo Winter Camping in deep snow. Snow Chains, winching and digging will be the letter of the day. I got back from the UK a couple of weeks ago and saw that we have had a huge amount of snow fall while away. Despite that I wanted to get out for a few days and two nights to explore some wilderness roads and a nature reserver about an hour from my home to decompress from the busy Christmas brake. The temperatures are dropping to -19c in the evening and the snow conditions are powdered snow on packed snow. These are good conditions for snow wheeling and chains as the snow can be pushed easily and the packed base provides good traction for the chains to grip to. Extreme Cold -25c Solo Wilderness Jeep Camp. Temperatures are extremely low at the moment and daylight hours are at there lowest. I venture out to one of my favourite spots to spend a couple of nights camping in my Jeep Cherokee XJ. Temperatures started at around -13c and dropped steadily to -25c in the early hours of the morning. These kind of temperatures are extreme for camping and my setup is obviously taken to its limits, including my camera gear. Water freezes, gas bottles don't gasify well, batteries read 0 percent even though they are fully charged. My setup was never designed for such temperatures but for me personally I enjoy experiencing these difficult conditions to see where the cracks are. Unfortunately one of the main areas I need to improve on is the insulation under my sleep mat which I underestimated due to my previous camping experiences with the 8.1 R value on the EXPED MegaMat Duo 10. Despite trying to insulate under the mat with the what I had with me I couldn't fend of the cold for longer than a couple of hours. Insulation is needed under the mat and I have since solved this issue with a thick thermal layer which can be removed and stored in the summer. Thanks for watching. In this video I am Configuring my Jeep XJ Shock Travel and Bump Stops for 35's. Since my last wilderness trip I've had some big jobs to do on the Jeep XJ to ensure its reliability and performance. I've been ignoring this work for a while but after a failed front shock, badly installed rear shocks and poorly setup bump stops its time to get this thing sorted before I go out again. In this video my aim is to move my rear shocks to the front and build an adapter to make the rears fit the front. I will also need to fit new shocks to the rear and adjust the shock angle so that the function correctly. After the travel is all set up I will get the bump stops dialed in for upward and downward travel. Thanks for watching. In this video I build a DIY Boost Leak Tester for the Jeep XJ Diesel to check for boost leaks. I thought I would make a video since I need to do this myself. Its a pretty simple job to check for boost leaks but fixing them can be a lot of work depending on where the leak is located. I use a hockey puck and a valve to make an adapter to fit the XJ and then charge the system with air. Make sure you use a load of soap in the water so that the bubbles are more visible. In my case I had two leaks on my engine, one at the turbo housing and unfortunately another at the manifold gasket. Back into the wilderness again in the Jeep Cherokee XJ. This time i'm in a remote part of the North on a network of logging roads. Its November and the temps are beginning to drop despite it being a very mild winter so far. I'm about 500 meters up on the top of a large hill and the temps at night drop just below -7. The diesel heater is going strong and its surprisingly toasty in the roof tent although the sound is like sleeping on an airplane so I shut it off before bed. In this video I go over my Jeep Cherokee XJ Camp Kitchen which includes a cooking platform with removable stove and a dedicated water boiler. I cook everything on one cast iron hit plate called a Murrikka here in Sweden, or a Skottle Grill in the USA. My setup is semi DIY as I have welded some pegs to the bottom of the 48cm Murrikka to allow the MSR stove to clip on. This allows for use with liquid gas or it can be taken off and used on an open fire. The stove can also be taken in a backpack for hiking. The white gas that I run with the MSR stove operates across summer and winter very efficiently and its much cheaper than bottles. I've been MIA for a couple of weeks visiting family in the UK but i'm back in Sweden preparing the XJ for the dark winter ahead. Auxbeam kindly offered me some headlights to make the jeep shine like an oncoming meteorite in the darkness and they seem to be working well. I had some teething issues on setup because I didn't buy the kit with the relays which would have helped immensely. But now that I have installed the relays along with a new headlight switch i'm seeing 12v at the lights instead of 10v and the headlight switch isnt melting anymore. In this video I check out a new location that I have wanted to visit on the map. A remote wilderness location by a lake at the top of a small mountain. This location is quite high up and it can get windy, but its a quiet and beautiful place with the opportunity to see bear and elk if your lucky. I head back out again for a couple of nights into the Wilderness for some remote camping in a relaxing location by a lake. Its Autumn and its wet at the moment so its going to be a damp couple of days. I'm trying out my diesel heater in this video also in preparation for the deep winter freeze. Hopefully It keeps down the condensation and gives me the opportunity to camp through the winter. The Rig is pretty much complete by the stage in terms of camping gear and on board amenities so I can enjoy using it in comfort while maintaining really good offroad capability. A really cool Sway Bar Disconnect made by a guy called RJ in a fabrication shop in the USA. He makes some really nice things for his XJ and hes kindly sent this sway bar locking hub prototype over for me to install and test on my Jeep XJ. Its a pretty awesome bit of kit that disconnects with an Aisin Hub so it takes just a few seconds to do. This should be a big upgrade for my XJ given that I transition between main roads, forest roads and dirt tracks on most trips. Thanks again RJ! In this video I show a simple hack to increase the fuel capacity of a standard 97+ XJ tank. A chap from Instagram called John kindly told me about the hack and I thought I would give it a try. Previously I was able to pump in 72 litres of delvis into the tank and after the hack I could get in 90 litres. I could squeeze in a bit more by inserting a copper tube bent upwards inside the breather but given the lack of headroom in the tank I thought it best to leave it at breather level. About one year ago I built a portable diesel heater for winter camping trips, heating the ARB awning room and Roof Tent along with my small workshop. despite some initial teething issues Its worked flawlessly for over a year and has probabaly run for over a 1000 hours of operation easily. In this video its getting rehomed in a smaller box and I am tapping the fuel tank so that the heater can pull diesel from the Jeeps main tank. This means no more refueling the heater, no spilling diesel or carrying extra fuel to top the heater up. It also lightens up the rear tire carrier so I don't have a large unit on top of it. I've had a number of messages about the mods i've made to the Jeep Cherokee XJ and its 2.5 VM Motori 425 OHV Diesel Engine to get more power from the engine. First off I am no expert at all but I the pursuit of turd polishing and getting more out of something from its original state. The 2.5 VM has a terrible reputation amongst some and its loved by others. Its cylinder heads were a nice idea but in practice a one piece head would have been better, but better heads are on the market and the engine can be reliable and perform very well with modifications. I decided to keep my VM and not swap it out to see what I could do to make it more of the engine I wanted it to be. In this video I discuss the avenues you can take to get more power from your VM without compromising the mechanical functionality of the engine. We set off a couple of weeks ago on a little vacation to the High Coast where we spent a couple of weeks touring some popular sights and sounds on the east coast of Sweden. Its not too far from where we live but its our first time there and also our first time with all three of us in the roof tent. I bought a Wildland Normandy Auto about four weeks ago and although we have tested it on some smaller camps this will be our first real trial run of sleeping in it for multiple nights. I'm in between trips and the aluminium storage boxes for the gullwing windows have come in. I haven't got stuts for the system yet but the boxes should allow me to store my recovery gear and whatever else I choose in the back window compartment, saving more space inside. I made the boxes by taking out the original window, tracing the shape of them, the adding four 100mm deep sides to each side much like a cardboard box. The local fabricators cut and bent them and that was basically it. If your going to do something like this it would probabaly be easier to get these boxes made in 3mm aluminium and bolting the hinges directly to the inside of the box rather then having them as sperate pieces. Its been ten months since I last camped in the Jeep and the build has come a long way since then. My first Summer outing of 2022 takes me to a place called Ekopark Käringberget which is located in Västerbotten Sweden. Its a beautiful place and an amazing time of year to get out and be in nature. On this camp I'm sleeping in the ARB Awning room for three nights while trying out my drawer system, stove, battery and fridge system to see how it all works in the real world. The aim of the build was always to have a comfortable basecamp in wilderness locations while having the ability to hike, wild camp, fish and return to camp making extended trips and traveling long distances more comfortable. In the last video I had to pull the transmission, replace the clutch and rear main seal to get the Jeep up and running again. It fortunately a success and 700 miles later the clutch is broken in and its running better than I can remember. Now the final touches with a 30" front drive shaft have been added and I have vibrationless Jeep with no oil leaks for the first time in my ownership. In this video I show you the main camp gear on the drawer system like the battery, fridge, food storage, stoves, recovery gear and general house keeping. I have skipped on tents and sleep gear but you can see that when i'm out camping. After some insane vibrations on the Jeep I had no choice but to pull the drive train for inspection. The transmission and t-case have done over 20 years of service with pretty low mileage but large tires and a high suspension lift. My first thoughts were the clutch but sadly the transmission itself had some excessive wear that would require a rebuild if used again. I was lucky that my spare engine came with a low mileage AX15 and Np231J that have seen no offroad uses and were largely unused for many years. The condition of both were much better and with the new clutch and refaced flywheel have made a huge difference! The Jeep Cherokee XJ 2.5td gets a new rear double cardan driveshaft today and I wanted to say a big thanks to the guys who helped out on Pateron. Time for some final tuning before this thing is safe to drive. Intercooler Upgrade, some Turbo Wastegate Adjustments, Pressure Testing, Welding the Dana 30HP Axle Tubes, Fabricating a better Trackbar End and Changing the AX15 Transmission Oil. I probabaly could have made this into five videos but time is short and the weather is only getting better. The jeep is finally operational and running great. There are a few small jobs to do like the SYE Driveshaft in the rear and a small repair to the front drive shaft but that's basically it. The fridge has arrived, i've built the stove and begin loading camp gear ready for our first bit of exploring and camping. Thanks for watching!
