The Biological Threat Research Laboratory (BTRL) at Texas Tech University was instrumental in identifying the first case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A (H5N1) being transmitted from a mammal (dairy cow) to a human. The case was made public in an article published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Steve Presley, the director of The Institute of Environmental and Human Health (TIEHH) and the BTRL, and Cynthia Reinoso Webb, the biological threat coordinator at TIEHH, were co-authors on the journal publication.

Researchers at the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience have taken a first step in exploring a rather complex question: what is happening inside the brain of somebody who may be considered ‘stuck’ between sleep and wakefulness? Many poeople imagine a sleepwalker as someone who is unconsciously walking around while their eyes are closed and their arms are stretched out in front of them. The composition of these sediments holds clues about the early environmental conditions, the processes that shaped the planet over time, and even potential signs of past life.

A new chip-scale device could provide sensitive detection of lead levels in drinking water, whose toxicity affects 240 million people worldwide. Engineers at MIT and collaborators have developed a compact, inexpensive technology to detect and measure lead in water. This new system uses a photonic chip and crown ethers to capture lead ions, providing accurate, near-instant results with just a droplet of water.

A new study indicates that high-potency cannabis use between the ages of 16 and 18 doubles the risk of psychotic experiences from 19-24, compared to lower-potency use in young adults. Young people consuming higher-potency cannabis, such as skunk, between the ages of 16 and 18, are twice as likely to have psychotic experiences from age 19 to 24 compared to those using lower-potency cannabis. That’s according to a new University of Bath study published in the scientific journal, Addiction on May 13.

Boronic acid has been utilized in organic chemistry for decades, despite not being found in any living organism. ‘It gives rise to different chemical reactions than those we find in nature,’ explains Gerard Roelfes, Professor of Biomolecular Chemistry & Catalysis at the University of Groningen. His group created an enzyme with boronic acid at its reactive center and then used directed evolution to make it more selective and to improve its catalytic power.

After losing weight, individuals who were overweight or obese exhibited increased levels of the protein Kallistatin in their subcutaneous white adipose tissue, according to a recent study by researchers at the DZD. Moreover, Kallistatin has been shown to enhance metabolism, potentially paving the way for new treatments for obesity and type 2 diabetes. The findings were recently published in the journal Molecular Metabolism.

NASA and SpaceX have successfully tested the docking system for the Artemis III mission, which will enable astronauts to transfer between the Orion spacecraft and the Starship HLS for lunar landings. This system, based on the Dragon 2 docking technology, will facilitate future crew transfers to the lunar surface and from lunar orbit to the Gateway space station. The University of California Irvine advised students to “leave” the area and buildings near where pro-Palestinian protesters were holding their protest. “Anyone currently in buildings in the vicinity of the protest are advised to exit buildings & leave area at this time,” the University of California wrote in a post on X. “Please disregard all previous orders to shelter in place. If able, please leave immediately & continue to avoid the protest area until further notice.” Prior to this statement, the university had issued a statement advising students and faculty to “shelter in place.”

A group of radical pro-Palestinian activists took over a building at the University of California Berkeley on Wednesday, just hours after administrators and protesters struck a deal to end a weeks-long “encampment.”
